1 Irish Setter Club of Michigan News and Views August/September 2014 From our Editor GREETINGS FELLOW MEMBERS! As I write this the rain is falling softly and soaking all of the plants that have enjoyed the luxury of having plentiful water this summer. Remember last year when it was "beastly hot" and the hose was out on a regular basis? Hope the summer is going well for all of you. Seems every year summer slips by faster and I think one reason is because we are outside and have the luxury to take off with or without dogs and take in all the wonders of the world that are readily available to us. There are a number of dog shows to attend in August and September. In addition the Club's annual Specialty show will be taking place on September 20 & 21 at the Wayne County Fairgrounds. With or without dogs, this event draws a number of people so it is a good chance to catch up with friends. Kudos to the members of the ISCM who worked tirelessly to make everything perfect at the National Specialty in Ohio at the Sawmill Creek Resort. There were compliments galore. Some were bold in their remark to say it was the best National ever!! For me, one of the special attractions was a number of breeders who no longer are breeding but came to enjoy all the fun and renew friendships of years past & offer their opinions about the dogs being exhibited today. Even the Aussies & New Zealanders came in droves!! Congratulations to all the "worker bees" who put on a really fine show!!! Dues are due!!! Dues must be paid at or before the annual meeting on 9/11/14. Please fill out the attached form and send to Membership Chairperson, Vickie Castiglione. REMEMBER: The deadline to submit annual dues is Wednesday, September 11th. Member Mike Solan is a real estate agent in the Birmingham/Bloomfield area. Part of every sales he makes goes to animal rescue. Since he had an Irish Setter, McDuff, it was a natural fit to make a donation to the Irish Setter club of Michigan rescue. He recently purchased a mixed breed rescue but I haven't given up on him getting another Irish. Mike was born in Ireland, so it's a given he have an another Irish. Thanks Mike for your generous donations! Viewpoints from Members In past editions of the New and Views club members have voiced their opinions and made great suggestions which we highlighted in the newsletter. Please continue to keep this line of communication open. All ideas are welcome! RESCUE NEWS Dan Graham reported that they now have 2 boys in rescue. Buddy is approx. 3 yrs old and came in as a stray from northern Mich. He is neutered, has all shots and is heartworm negative.

Not a lot of coat right now (he was underfed and had hook worms when he came in) but it is getting dark and shiny and should come in a lot nicer.

He was adopted from there and lasted 2 weeks in his next home (with 2 other dogs and 3 very young children).

Rusty is 7 years old and we just got him a couple days ago he came from the Grand Rapids area and ended up in the shelter in Kent Co. when his owner died.

Browning is 4 years old and just arrived a few days ago he was purchased off the internet and kept for a week by someone who then took him to the shelter at Huron Valley. He was adopted from there and lasted 2 weeks in his next home (with 2 other dogs and 3 very young children). I have no idea what these people were looking for in an Irish Setter but as far as I can tell, Browning is a very good dog. He was taken from the shelter by a local rescue who kept him until they needed to downsize. He is neutered but his shots are all due and will be given in the next few days. His left eye was either injured or diseased and was removed while he was in the former rescue other than that he is a very nice boy who needs a home and a little stability. Note: Browning and Rusty have found their forever homes and left with their new families! Photos below. We just got a new boy a few days ago---he s 4 years old and seems like a real nice guy but we need get him neutered and shots updated (name is Barney). Photos coming soon! !! HIGH IN TRIAL, the top award in Obedience, was won by Greenwwood First Impression, CD, JH, HANDLED BY DAN GRAHAM! His score was 194.5. CONGRATULATIONS DAN!

7 Dave Schafer B IG NEWS FROM THE 2014 NATIONAL. BEST OF BREED was won by GCH Darnelle s Pennies From Heaven, SHOWN BY SUSAN SCHAFER! There were 96 other Champions entered in the contest, and she beat em all! CONGRATULATIONS SUSAN!!! HIGH IN TRIAL, the top award in Obedience, was won by Greenwwood First Impression, CD, JH, HANDLED BY DAN GRAHAM! His score was CONGRATULATIONS DAN! Barb Riegle Regalaire Southern Crown, placed third in a very competitive Am Bred class at the ISCA National Specialty. He was piloted to this win by Trevor Jones, from Australia, who is the owner of sire, AM CH Gwyndara Southern Cross, ROM. Giles & Trevor had never met but they looked fabulous together! Cindy Kullik Congratulations to Cindy Kullik & Maureen Beagle & AM CAN CH Milesian Special Occasion, aka, "Emma". Emma was piloted to all her wins by Maureen. She won BOS in veteran sweeps, won her regular veterans class and went on to garner an AOM! August/September News and Views 7

Treasurer s Report David Schafer Dave said he did not have a written report for this meeting. He did report that the field trial made about $1045 and the hunt test made about $105. Rescue Committee Report Ann Graham Ann Graham reported that they currently have two dogs in rescue. Two boys one approximately seven years old and one just under three. Membership Report - Vickie Castiglione Vickie reported that we have two memberships to approve: Marta Pienke sponsored by Bob Hallett and Ken Watson sponsored by Dan and Ann Graham. Motion by Martina Friedberg Second by Mary Grill to share any potential profits for the National Hunt Test with the Ohio Irish Setter Club. Motion Passed National - Debbie Davis Debbie discussed the events for the National Friday Night Party- Rock and Roll. a. Decorations ordered and have arrived b. DJ hired who is also bringing a photo booth and giving us a rate of $600 from 7 pm 11 pm. This is a great rate since most DJ were charging without booth. c. Janet has decorations I think done. d. Need lots of help setting up on Friday night. e. Remember dress as your favorite rocker. Debbie asked Dan if he was all set for the rescue parade. She mentioned that logo pins have arrived to sell at the national. We still have raffle tickets and Basket hangers for sale as fundraisers. Doing well so far. Raffle tickets $1 each or 25 for $20. Need workers to man raffle and sell tickets at National ISCM Specialty Judges Seminar is June 21st and 22nd. Will need dogs and help Michigan Sporting Dog Specialty We will be having a specialty at the 2015 July Sporting Dog shows. We will work with Sporting Dog on judges ISCM Specialty Saturday will be a ISCA Regional Specialty and Sunday will be the ISCM Specialty Dave Schafer moved and Ken Davis seconded to adjourn meeting at 4:35 p.m. No Board meeting - Nothing to report. REPORTS Secretary Report Jackie Shelest Minutes distributed. Motion Dan Graham, Second Vickie Castiglione to approve minutes as presented. A big Thank You to Jake & John Szarnecki and Greg Galieti for all their hard work at our National! Treasurer s Report Dave Schafer Dave distributed the treasurers report. Obedience/Rally Report Dan Graham High in Trial at the National -Greenwood First Impression, CD, JH, handled by Dan Graham! His score was Cards and Flowers Toni Whipple No report. Rescue Committee Report Ann Graham Ann Graham reported that they currently have one male Buddy who is approximately three years old in rescue. Field Report Deb Davis for Janet Parker Debbie reported for Janet that the National hunt test made $705 in entry fees and had expenses of $ Reminder that October 4 & 5, Field Trial at the Highland Silo Course. We will not be doing a hunt test this year, but another field trial. Come out and help, watch enjoy! Membership Report Vicki Castiglione No report. Special Events Report - Debbie Davis Debbie reported that the National was a huge success! The raffle baskets, silent auction, shirt sales, and the garden stakes/hangers were a hit and we made good sales from all of these items Specialty Debbie stated that the premium will be mailed out soon (and ed out too). The trophies are all set. Seeking a raffle chairperson to handle raffle baskets and ticket sales and promotion during our specialty. Members - please don't forget to put together a raffle basket and either contact someone from the club to bring it to the specialty or drop it off early on Saturday. We may do the leprechaun toss again this year and thinking about a 50/50 raffle too. Ribbons - discussion on making ribbons a bit fancier with longer streamers. Discussion with someone from the Springer club inviting them to be a part of our specialty dates/location Sporting Dog Seminar is the same date as DKC shows so ISCM probably will not participate in Sporting Dog in Debbie had conversation with organizer to let them know of date conflict. ISCM will support DKC again in 2015 on Saturday and Sunday. Debbie checking to see if we can have a sweepstake. Barb Popyk said she may do the RDO at Sportsman's for a cost of $25. New Business Dan Graham showed a beautiful painting that he and Ann were thinking about having note cards made from (perhaps also small prints) to sell as fundraiser. Members approved.
