NEWSLETTER SPRING 2015 News from Grand Junction Spring is here again, finally! After a long cold winter and a weather delayed National Field Trial Championship, it is encouraging to experience warmer temperatures, sunny days, and spring flowers! In case you got snowed in and haven t heard the news, the winner of the 2015 National Championship is Miller s Dialing In, owned and handled by Gary Lester of Gracey, Kentucky. Miller s Dialing In, a four year old Pointer dog also known as Speck, located 8 coveys and gave an outstanding performance on February 28 th to garner the crown. We congratulate Gary and everyone involved with the development of this year s champion. The first quarter of this year has been particularly busy here at the Museum. The Hobart Ames Memorial Field Trial, the Hall of Fame Trials sponsored by the Volunteer English Springer Spaniel Club and ESSFTA, and the National Championship at Ames brought in visitors from across the country and beyond. The Museum played host to banquets, a fish fry, luncheons, and meetings during all of these events. We were especially honored to once again host the annual Hall of Fame Inductions on February 7 th. It is indeed an honor to be inducted into the Hall of Fame and we congratulate this year s inductees! It was great to see our old friends and meet so many new ones! The comradery, friendships, and devotion to the sporting dog breeds we see each year at the Hall of Fame Inductions is truly overwhelming. Thank you for making this year s event one of the best ever! CRAWFISH BOIL FUNDRAISER EVENT HELD The Museum hosted a Crawfish Boil fundraiser Saturday, April 25, The event was well attended and the food was fabulous! We appreciate our friends from Louisiana who made this superb supper possible! Richard and Mary Todd, Craig Pellerin, Marvin Pickering and Dall Parks cooked the crawfish, jambalaya and all the fixins for the nearly 100 hungry participants. Richard and Mary Todd donated the crawfish and jambalaya for the event. The people who attended renewed old friendships and new friends were made. The Museum is particularly grateful to our Cajun friends mentioned above that so generously donated their time and money to make this event successful-both culinarily and financially. If you missed this event, you missed a good time! Hopefully we will be able to have the 2nd Annual Crawfish Boil next year. Page 1 Above, Left-Right: Richard & Mary Todd shown with their cooking crew and BDF Executive Director, Tonya Brotherton (center).

From the Desk of the President Spring has finally sprung in West Tennessee. We had a very difficult winter, which was hard on our physical facilities, Don Driggers particularly our roof at the Field Trial Hall of Fame. We are going to have to replace all the roofs on the buildings that harbor our valuable assets, in order to insure that the beautiful paintings and other artifacts are available for the sporting dog world. The snow and ice were so bad that the Bird Dog Championship at the Ames Plantation was delayed over a week. As Dr. Rick Carlisle said, Our horses and dogs don t have ice skates and they could not run with all the ice, snow and frozen conditions at the Plantation. However, the championship was finally completed and the new winner, Miller s Dialing In, owned and handled by Gary Lester, was crowned. We had a great induction ceremony during the first weekend in February at the Hall of Fame. Many deserving people and dogs were inducted from all different breeds. We had the largest turnout that I have seen since I ve been on the Board for the various functions. Our volunteers and our staff did a great job in hosting the event and made everyone feel comfortable and warm in the setting of the Bird Dog Hall of Fame. We are moving forward with different projects in an effort to raise money to offset the cost of replacing the roof, which will cost approximately $280,000. A project that was initiated by Rick Smith, of the Brittany breed, will help raise money, with sale of raffle tickets for a painting of Shadow Oak Bo, who was the Setter who just won two championships in a row at the Ames Plantation. Bob Bertram provided the painting and there are several second tier prizes that will be awarded, when the drawing takes place in February of I urge everyone to support this project, since it will help offset expenses, particularly in relation to the roof replacement at the Bird Dog Hall of Fame. I want to thank all of the local volunteers, as well as our staff for all of their efforts this past year. The Hall of Fame and, particularly its museum, is a wonderful venue. It s a beautiful time of year in West Tennessee and I urge all folks, when they are in the area of Grand Junction, to come to the Hall of Fame and walk through the history of the working dog. It will do your heart good to see all of the famous dogs and people, who have been involved in the sporting world. Come see us. Our staff and volunteers will make you feel at home. ~ Don Driggers, President Page 2

Field Trial News The Fayette County Field Trial Amateur Shooting Dog Championship, Fayette County FTC Amateur Derby, and Fayette County FTC Amateur All Age Trials were held April 3, 4, & 5, 2015 at the West Tennessee Field Trial grounds on the Currie Farm near Dancyville, Tennessee. This event was hosted by Bill and Alan Currie and Blake Kukar. I was indeed honored to be a part of the event and to be invited to their Fish Fry on Friday night April 3, A great time was enjoyed by all who attended and the catfish and trimmings were delicious. Great job guys! Congratulations to the winners!!! To the right is a snapshot from the event. Upcoming Events The Museum will be hosting the Grand Junction High School Class Reunion once again this year on Saturday, June 6 th. This event is always well attended and the Museum is the perfect meeting place to renew old friendships and acquaintances. Please make plans to attend if you graduated from this illustrious center of education! ~ If you are a German Shorthair Pointer fan, you won t want to miss the special events planned at the Museum in June of this year. On Saturday, June 13, 2015 there will be events throughout the day culminating with the unveiling of a German Shorthair bronze on the front lawn of the Museum. The German Shorthair bronze will take its place of honor among many other important breeds already immortalized along the grand entry way into the Museum. More information will be provided on our website at in the coming weeks. Countdown to Topless Event in June The Museum will go topless, literally, in June immediately following the German Shorthair events this year. Portions of the roof of the Museum facility have experienced leaks over the past few years. The excessive rain and snow this winter has aggravated the problem. The Board of Directors of the Museum voted to approve the removal of the old roof and the installation of a new metal roof in the latter part of June. This will be a massive undertaking. Museum displays will by necessity have to be removed and stored until this project is completed. Please be patient with us until we can accomplish the task. We plan to make the best of this renovation by cleaning and restoring current displays and adding new features to the Museum. Give us a few weeks and we think you will be impressed by the changes we have in store! Page 3

The President s Council Last year, the Museum implemented a new fundraiser known at the President s Council. For an on-going annual contribution of $1,000 or more, members can financially support special projects at the Museum. Members of the President s Council are honored each year at the annual Hall of Fame ceremonies and receive other Museum benefits. In 2014, the Museum received a total of $21,000 from twenty-one supporters. As of the date of this newsletter, the Museum has received two renewals and one new member. The two renewal members of the Council are: Capt. Gary Lockee Mrs. Sally Lockee We welcome our newest member: Mrs. Suzanne Steed. With these new contributions, the President s Council fund balance as of March 11, 2015 is $24,026.82, including interest earned on the account. We appreciate everyone who so graciously contributed to this special fundraiser. Again, we thank these members for their support! You too can become a member! If you are interested in pledging your support, please call Executive Director, Tonya Brotherton at for more information. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Focus on President s Council Members Ms. Violet Alexander of Albuquerque, NM is a member of our President s Council. Her husband, Frank D. Alexander, ( ) was inducted this past February into the German Shorthaired Pointer Hall of Fame. Frank loved handling his own dogs in field trials according to Violet. We are grateful and pleased to have Ms. Violet among our Council Members. "There is no footprint so small that it does not leave an imprint on someone's heart or this world." Page 4 Feb. 7, 2015: Ms. Violet Alexander at the Field Trial Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony accepting on behalf of her husband.

SPECIAL VISITORS We have many special visitors here at the Museum, but pictured here is a very special one! Mr. Emsley Laney, from South Carolina, was surprised on Christmas morning of last year to find a card from his wife and son. The card contained a free ticket to the Bird Dog Museum a place he has always wanted to visit. Mr. Laney didn t waste any time in taking advantage of his gift his tour of the Museum was realized on January 7, We appreciate Mrs. Laney and her son for making his dream come true! Pictured here is Mr. and Mrs. Laney with their son, Emsley Laney, Jr. Mr. Laney also enjoyed a well-deserved rest in our rocker after the tour! Right: A recent visit from some of Count Noble s descendants; O Hagan s Royal Bondhu Pippa on the right and Lynnhill s Southern Grace on left was a delightful surprise this month. Both dogs are pictured with their owners Ty Melowicz & Pam O Hagan who are breeders of Llewellin Setters of Chesapeake, Virginia. These dogs are some beautiful ladies! Grace is an expectant mother. Youngest Member of the Bird Dog Foundation We are very proud of our youngest member: Maximus (Mac Mac) Saxton he is 2 years old! Mac Mac took my hand on a recent visit and we went on a personal tour of the Museum. He enjoyed himself tremendously and we made a new friend! He is the great grandson of the late Mr. Henry Berol ( ) who has been inducted into the Hall of Fame twice. Mr. Berol was inducted into the Pointer/Setter Hall of Fame in 1976 and this year, 2015, into the Cocker Spaniel Hall of Fame. Mac Mac lives in Texas just a few states away from his grandfather s old Di-Lane Plantation in Waynesboro, Georgia. Today, Mr. Henry Berol s plantation is a public wildlife area and on it is a cemetery where over 70 of Mr. Berol s beloved dogs were laid to rest. Mac Mac, along with all of us here at the museum, would like to encourage anyone who is interested in preserving our sporting dog heritage to become a member of the Bird Dog Foundation. New members like Mac Mac are essential to carry our legacy forward to the future! Page 5 Mac Mac Saxton

Education Spotlight ABOVE: Judge s Special Award Winner, Brody Herndon & his Art Teacher, Ms. Patricia Ayers. The Museum s Annual Student Art Contest There are many talented young artists from the different schools in our local region. The Art Contest judges had a difficult time again this year selecting the winners out of the 365 art entries. The contest culminated on Saturday, March 21 st with an Awards Ceremony attended by Marshall County, MS winning students approximately one hundred people. Refreshments for the event were sponsored by Mayor Ricky Ayers of Hickory Valley, TN and were provided by Mrs. Cissye Pierce of Saulsbury. We appreciate Mayor Ayers for his sponsorship and Mrs. Pierce for the preparation of the delicious treats! We would also like to extend a word of thanks to all the participants, teachers, and supportive families of this event. The Judges Special Award this year went to 9 th Grader Brody Herndon of Rose Hill Middle School in Jackson, Tennessee. Congratulations to Brody and all the individual winners and artists! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ College Scholarship Essay Contest On the heels of the Student Art Contest, the annual Bird Dog Foundation College Scholarship Essay Contest deadline has just occurred. We have received 16 essay submissions from students graduating from high schools from across TN, AR & MS. The contest judges are now in the process of reviewing the essays. Every year, students are encouraged to submit essays written on suggested topics ranging from Agroforestry to Wildlife Habitat and Propagation to Zoology. The first place winner will receive a $1,500 tuition scholarship sent to an accredited college or university of their choice, and the second place prize amount is $1, paid towards tuition as well. Any eligible college-bound high school senior is encouraged to enter this contest! The contest rules can be downloaded from the Art & Essay Contests section of the Bird Dog Foundation s official website at. The deadline for entries is always April 15 th of each year. The Michael R. Tuxon Educational Fund is named in honor of one of our deceased, former charter board member from Reno, Nevada and all awarded scholarships come from this special education fund. Page 6
