1 2018 Newsletter Hello everyone! I feel it has been a long time since I last brought everyone up to date with what has been going on here at the National Bird Dog Museum. This newsletter will let me rectify that, catching you up on museum news and events of the past few months since our last newsletter. Spring heralds the return of the sun s warmth, the renewal of life, and the reappearance of green leaves and colorful flowers across west Tennessee. Right now everything in the area is mud-lucious and puddle-wonderful, as it has been since the National Championship Field Trials in February. I believe that this, so far, has been one of the wettest years that I remember. This extremely wet weather made the Nationals very challenging for all involved the staff, the gallery, the judges, and the handlers. I hope that by this time, you have all read and enjoyed our special Hall of Fame newsletter detailing the inductees during the 2018 Hall of Fame inductions in February. We have been busy around here since our last newsletter, so please sit back, relax, and enjoy. Tonya Brotherton, Executive Director 1

2 FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT Hello, and welcome, from West Tennessee. Spring has finally arrived after a long and unusually cold winter. The National Championship Field Trial at the Ames Plantation was successfully defended by Lester s Sunny Hill Jo. Jo is owned by David Thompson and Gary Lester, handled by Gary Lester and scouted by Mark Haynes. Congratulations to all the qualifiers and the National Champion! The 2018 Hall of Fame induction ceremony was once again held at the National Bird Dog Museum on the second weekend in February. Our staff and volunteers did a great job hosting the event and made everyone feel welcomed. On behalf of the board of directors, I would like to thank Tonya, the staff, volunteers, sponsors, and our supporters for their efforts and resources during the recent events. There are so many hours involved in making the museum the very best it can be! Please review our fundraisers on the website, and call the staff with any questions. As you know, most of our expenses are covered by annual fundraisers. We NEED your support! I would also like to thank our board of directors for their commitment of time, money, and passion for this outstanding institution. We are making tremendous progress for all the breeds that we love so much. A special thanks to our outgoing President, Don Driggers, for his devotion and tireless work for the museum and HOF. Lastly, thanks to Gary Lockee, for being the best tour guide in the country! Until next time, Mark Medford President 2

You are a very special group of people whose support we greatly appreciate. President s Council members support the National Bird Dog Museum and Field Trial Hall of Fame with an annual gift of $ or more. These funds are placed in a special account and are used at the discretion of the Board of Directors for projects supporting the Bird Dog Foundation. In each newsletter, we cast the spotlight on a member of this prestigious group. Col. Nathan & Patte Titus Thomas & Iris Vail McCall Wilson 3

4 The President s Council Fred Kampo Fred was born and raised in Wisconsin, where he began his field trial career over 47 years ago. He has owned 10 titled dogs and co-owned the 1988 National Champion, NFC-AFC PP s Lucky s Super Toby. His dogs have accumulated over 600 championship points, qualified for 16 National Opens and 30 National Amateurs, and have been finalists in both. In addition, he has worked at numerous judges clinics. At National Field Trials, he has been on the Marshal s Committee, Field Trial Committee, Special Committee, and Gunners Committee. Fred is on many boards, including that of the National Bird Dog Foundation. He is also the President of the Labrador Retriever Club and the AKC Parent Club of Labrador Retriever. The history of the Retriever Field Trials are very important to Fred and in 2006, he co-authored a book titled The History of Retriever Field Trials The Early Years He is devoted to his dogs and to the future and integrity of the Retriever Field Trials. Fred now resides in OshKosh, Wisconsin with his dogs and the retrieve of his life, his wife Susan. 4

15 ANOTHER WAY TO SUPPORT 2018 is an excellent year to contribute to The Bird Dog Foundation. It is such a worthy cause. All of us that are interested in bird hunting need to support it. Also, with the stock market near an all time high, there is a very easy and quite painless way to contribute. You give appreciated shares of stock directly to the museum. The museum s stock broker immediately sells the share and pays the proceeds directly to the museum. The donor has no capital gains tax liability yet the donor can claim a contribution donation expense on his or her taxes, as long as they file a return with deductions and do not take the standard deductions. This is particularly painless if you donate shares with a low cost basis. The important element of such a gift is that you give the share directly to the museum -- you do not have to sell the share yourself. If you want to make such a donation ask your stock broker to send the share to the museum s stock Broker: Milton Smylie with Stifel Nicolaus, 773 N. Parkway, Jackson, Tennessee phone number RECIPE REQUEST The National Bird Dog Museum and Field Trial Hall of Fame is proud to announce that we will be producing a cookbook. We would like for the recipes in this book to be accompanied by a related story or glimpse into field trial history. We are asking for some of your favorite recipes and accompanying stories to be included in the cookbook. If your recipe came from a book or magazine please specify that and include the title. Feel free to add why you like this recipe or what it goes well with. This book will go on sale in our gift shop upon completion.
