NEWF TAILS The Newsletter of the RIVER KING NEWFOUNDLAND CLUB July-August 2016 President s Message River King put on another successful water test this past weekend, I want to thank everyone that took time to come out and support the club. The committee consisting of Mark Iken, Tom Brant and Sue Zientara deserve a huge pat on the back. It is always a pleasure to hear all the nice things entrants, judges and spectators have to say about River King events. If you haven't attended an event recently you really should try to and see what an amazing job our club members do. Mark your calendar for next year's test, August 19 and 20, Now that we have put the water test in the books, we can look forward to a fall full of River King events. Starting with our next General Meeting on September 11 at Rowens Kennels in Brighton, Illinois, potluck at 1:00. The Board will be looking for volunteers to fill next year's committees, if you are interested contact a board member. Next up will be our Obedience and Rally Trial the weekend of October 8 and 9 at Westinn Kennels in Wentzville, MO. Stewards are always needed, please contact Pat Owens at rowensk@sbcglobal.com if you can lend a hand. Our Regional has moved back to Springfield on October 22 and 23. While we won't have our own building, the show committee has been more willing to work with us regarding our concerns regarding grooming space and Janice and the committee has been busy working out all the details. It looks to be an exciting event. Rounding out the year will be our Holiday party on November 20, more information on this event to follow and the Thanksgiving Day Parade on November 24. Take care and hope to see you at one of our upcoming events. Cassie Iken RKNC President 1

Water Test Chairman Well River King held another great water test last weekend! Our judges were Pam Saunders from Oregon and Laura Gallagher from California. If you were there you know how great it was! We all had a special time visiting with old friends and making new ones. Congratulations to all Newfs that passed and so close for those that didn't. A special thanks to everyone that helped out in one-way or Another! You are all the best! It would be nice to have more club members come and help out! Remember this is a club function and you don't have to have a Newf entered to be there to help. There are a few great people that had to multitask and some out of town club members to pitch in so we could even have a test. Please remember why you became a member? Where would we be if we did not have events? The money we raise from events help our club function and also helps out our rescue. I know we all have busy lives as I do too! Please make every effort to come out and help whether you have a Newf entered or not. There's only 4 big events a year. Oh by the way, we unveiled a cool Newfoundland rescue shirt that Was exclusive to the water test!! Sorry if you missed it! Monies collected will go to help Rescue. Fellowship was excellent and of course so was the food. The attending members had the opportunity to vote for the Top Three Most Memorable Newfoundland Moments for 2015 a list was given to make the selection from. The List of Nominees were: 1. Faith in the Barn Hunt: Darlene Rattner and Faith 2. The Training Team: Jean McAdams, Sue Zientara and Tom Brandt 3. It s Hot and it is only a Hat: Nitro and Dave Klezdik (Water Test 2015) 4. Mom, You Jumped In: Charlie and Dona Baker-Austin (Water Test 2015) 5. You Threw the Paddle Mom: Charlie and Dona Baker-Austin (Water Test 2015) 6. When Communication Fails: Java and Carol Giffhorn (Water Test 2015) 7. Dad, I love You: Tuco and Vince Molinarolo (Water Test 2015) 8. Honorable Mention: Catch Me if you can, Beau and Connie Meech (Thanksgiving Parade 2015) [No picture available] 5
The Top Three Most Memorable Newfoundland Moments (MMNM) for 2015 were: #1 Nominee's Name: Darlene Rattner Possible Title for Their Award: A NEWF IN THE BARN HUNT Tell us their story: Darlene and Faith were participating in a Barn Hunt, and watching a MOV file, Faith Holds True with Newfs; if in the way move it. Watch and Laugh I know you asked for pictures of our favorite or funniest moment so I am sending you this short video (just over 1 min) of Faith doing Barn Hunt. This was taken at her first Trial in July. If you can use it great if not I understand. In Barn Hunt in addition to finding the prescribe number of rats the dogs must also complete a climb and a tunnel with in a certain amount of time. This is not an easy feat for a Newf as the hay bales are narrow and the tunnel is only 22 inches high by 18 inches wide. Faith was at the novice level so she only need to find one rat which she did with out a problem it is what follows that always makes me laugh and smile. Watch and you will see. Faith was very successful in Barn Hunt in 2015, earning both her novice (RATN) and open ((RATO) titles in The AKC recognizes the titles I just have to send in the paper work to register them. We are also competing in two trials in April where she will be going after her senior title that is 4 rats, a climb and tunnel all with in 3 1/2 mins. As you can see she has a ton of fun doing this. Watch the movie at the following hyperlink: Barn Hunt: 6
#2 Most Memorable Newfoundland Moment for 2015: River King Newfoundland Club MMNM Awards (Most Memorable Newfoundland Moments Awards) Nominee's Name: Dave Klezdik (the Bumble Bee) Possible Title for Their Award: It s only a Hat! And he is Hot after that long swim. Tell us their story: Nitro finished taking line to shore with Dave calling, after taking line from Nitro, Dave thought Nitro needed to cooled off, so he shared his hat by putting it on nitro while judge was Judge was watching. Really can t we do this it is hot outside? Dave and Nitro with the Hat on after bringing line to shore during 2015 Water Test. Judge is writing and looking at them, but it did not count against Nitro. Dave was thinking of Nitro. 7
#3 Most Memorable Newfoundland Moment for 2015 River King Newfoundland Club MMNM Awards (Most Memorable Newfoundland Moments Awards) Nominee s Name: Dona Baker-Austin. Possible Title for Their Award: Charlie I am leaving for Wisconsin and you are Walking. Tell us their story: Charlie s Handler Jumped off boat waiting for Charlie to Rescue Her. Charlie looked at her as if to say you jumped in, you must be OK and I do not want to get wet now. He road the boat back to shore while his owner had to swim, she called him for help all the way to shore. Once on shore, Charlie decided that he would exit the boat to join his mother. Slide show shows just how funny this was. Thanks to all of the winners, I am sure there are times when these events are not so funny, but realize this is all in fun and when these events happened some where there was someone who has had these experiences and this made them laugh, not at anyone particular but to realize all of us are never alone when these events go down each of us has had something like this happen to us. Thanks to our attendees at the banquet for helping us select these lucky individuals 8

Rescue Report August 2016 by: Debbie Fitton Because 'it always works out'! River King had the pleasure of adopting two foster dogs to their forever homes in the past few weeks. On July 23, Guinness was adopted by Sandy Ely. Guinness had been fostered since February by Kim and Jim DeSutter. Poor Guinness had suffered greatly throughout his life until his owner surrendered him to the Humane Society and he ultimately ended up in River King Rescue. The DeSutters took care of him and prepared him for life with a loving home. In steps Sandy who had recently lost three of her own pets. Sandy sent me an asking me if we had any special needs dogs up for adoption. Sandy had adopted from River King twice before and is a very special, wonderful home. Sandy says Mr. G (as he is now called) is doing so well and is adapting to life with a Jack Russell Terrier, an Aussie and a bird. 18
19 Misha had been fostered by Rita and Dave Jacobs and was a bit of a challenge. She came to River King heartworm positive, very thin and with painful hips. The Jacobs cared physically for her and most importantly acted as her advocate to teach Misha how to show her pain to humans in an appropriate manner. Rita used social media to show the world who Misha is and the PERFECT home was found for her. Carol and Hans Serazio drove all of the way from up-state New York and Misha found her forever home on August 20! Carol says Misha is a comedian who, for some reason, seems to like to get into the bathtub even though it's not bath time!
On a sad note. Our dog, Lucky died on August 8 at the age of 13 years old. Lucky was a curly haired mix breed that I bought for $10 in 2003 from one of my clients because they would not care for him. Lucky was very unique in that DNA testing could not prove heritage. The reason I mention Lucky in my report is that Lucky was a big part of helping me do Newfoundland rescue. Lucky was an extremely intelligent and loving dog who was a 'little on the edge'. Every foster dog had to pass the 'Lucky Test' in order to live life peacefully in our home. Lucky saw many foster dogs come and go in our home and he always rose to the challenge. We will miss you forever, little guy. I want to recognize the passing of Leo. Leo came into rescue in September 2008 and was fostered by Ed and I until June During Leo's stay with us, he had surgery for cruciate and for a luxating patella. Leo was such a trooper throughout his recovery and was adopted June 13, 2009 by Andrew Gardner and Billy Dishuk where he lived until his death on July 14. Leo lived in downtown Chicago and was a favorite of the local shops. No dog ever had it so good. I want to recognize several Friends of Newfoundlands who financially support River King Newfoundland Rescue. Your gifts are crucial to this program and are very appreciated. Special thanks to: Dick and Joan Blevins, who regularly donate; Carl R. Pigott in memory of Bill Huheey; Jan and Kenneth Amsinger in memory of Bill Huheey; Debbie Kotva-daughter of Bill Huheey who requested rescue donations in her father's memory; Leonard Perlmutter who donated two times. One in memory of Leo and one in memory of my dog, Lucky; Andrew Gardner and Billie Dishuk in memory of Leo, Snuffles (Leonard Perlmutter's Newf), Tigger (Ed and I's Newf) and Lucky - Leo's rescue brothers and friends. 20

Help Make Your Newsletter Valuable This newsletter is all about RKNC, of course, and RKNC is nothing if not its members, so please help make this newsletter all it can be by sending in your news, updates, brags, notices, photos, and everything else Newf- related (short of classified ads.) If you have a lot of photos from a recent RKNC event, please consider creating a slideshow on a free photo- sharing site (such as PhotoBucket). The newsletter will publish a photo or two from your collection along with a link to the entire set of images; this way, the size of the newsletter can be kept manageable for ing. (Photos, even web-resolution JPGS, consume a lot of file space and computer memory, and compressing the newsletter PDF file compromises the quality of the entire document.) The newsletter is currently published bi-monthly, and as a helpful reminder here are the current schedule and submission deadlines: Issue Estimated Publication Submission Deadline Jan-Feb Feb 28 Feb 18 Mar-Apr Apr 30 Apr 20 May-Jun Jun 30 Jun 20 Jul-Aug Aug 30 Aug 20 Sep-Oct Oct 30 Oct 20 Nov-Dec Dec 30 Dec 20 This schedule will make the newsletter summary in nature, being published at the end of each two-month period; this will allow us to include draft test results in the March- April issue, water test results in the July-August issue, specialty results in the Sept- October issue, and obedience trial results in the January-February issue. But that can happen only if results and reports are submitted in a timely manner. And if you re writing something for this newsletter, please keep in mind the relationship between what you re writing about and when the newsletter will be published. THANK YOU for your support of the RKNC newsletter! 23
