9 GDCC Annual Potluck & General Open Meeting Joe & Linda Tkach will be hosting this year s annual potluck & open meeting. It will be held on July 5, 2014 after Dane Judging at the Ventura Shows at Bob & Linda Tonnancour s RV. Here s a note from Joe and Linda below. We ve also added in the current sign-up sheet of who s bringing what. If you don t see your contribution noted, pick a category and let Linda and Joe know! Don t Be Shy! Hi Everybody, The Ventura show is only 2-weeks away and the 4th of July Picnic Pot Luck is almost here. We are still looking for volunteers to bring some items for the Picnic. If you or someone you know is going to attend the show and the picnic, please let Joe and Linda Tkach know if you can bring one of the following: 1. Soft Drinks (in cooler with Ice). 2. ( Tari ) received recognition at the Santa Maria Kennel Club s Annual Awards ceremony for earning his AKC Championship Title in Tari also was acknowledged for winning the Channel City Kennel Club s 2013 AKC Sanctioned B Match, out of the 6-9 Puppy class, and becoming the first Great Dane to have their name engraved and grace the CCKC Awards Plaque as the match winner!! Tari is owned, loved, and adored by Dana R. Litzinger. DANEKRAAFT S SPECIAL YAMRB ( Ziva ) got WB, BP, BOW & BOS then went on to win Group 1st in Puppy Groups at the Kern County KC Show. 15 Breed Responsibility You love your Great Dane he s the best dog you ve ever had. Why not take it a step further and be as educated about the breed as you can? Chances are you will be approached and asked questions about your Dane while on walks and at classes. To be fair to the breed, you want to answer those questions as correctly as possible. To do this, you might want to do a little homework first. You can obtain excellent information on the breed at these two websites: and Information that you might want to pass on would be: There are six recognized colors: fawn, brindle, black, blue, harlequin and mantle. These are the only colors that can be shown. Danes can come in other colors. Colors coming from the harlequin color family are whites (often deaf), merles, blacks, blacks with white. Occasionally dogs from mixed color breeding (see for more information) may be white with fawn or brindle patches. Termed mismarks, these dogs can make good pets, but should never be bred or considered rare colors. Any color of Dane can be registered with the AKC. Only recognized colors can be shown. Certain colors should not be bred. The Great Dane Club of America has a color code; please visit for more information. Danes have a short life span and can be prone to many health problems. Concerned breeders do health testing on all adult breeding stock to screen for these problems. Danes are not for all families as they are expensive to care for and require a high level of commitment. They need to be house pets and an important part of the family. They do not do well as outside dogs. Not all Danes get along with other animals. Some may be prone to chasing livestock or being dog aggressive. Anyone who is involved in breeding Danes should be fully aware of what is involved. New breeders should work with an established mentor. Any person considering breeding their Dane should volunteer at least 6 months to a rescue group so they know the scope of the unwanted Dane problem. 16 Big Dog Corner 10 Breeds Favored by Dog Thieves Found on Pet Dr.KarenBecker.com The AKC reported a 70% increase in dog thefts in Dog flippers are out in force, stealing and selling other people s beloved pets for top dollar. Lucky us we are NOT on this list!! While checking out www Greatdanereview.com I came across an article I found to be very informative and eye opening. Making Your Dane Adaptable Or How to Prevent Mommy-it is By Georgia Hymmen for the show or companion pup. The information in this article is in my opinion, valuable for all who come in contact with any dog from a handler to veterinarian and staff, as well as pet sitters and those in between. Noisy Tummy Is your dog plagued with a noisy tummy? I am not talking about the normal soft intestinal noises but rather the kind that requires you to turn up the television to drown them out or the kind that wakes you from a sound sleep. No, your dog is not possessed; however, it is a sign of a gassy tummy which no one wants in a large breed. These were common scenarios Huey and I were often dealing with, and of course when the tummy was noisy Huey was off his food which only made the situation worse. Huey was normally fed 6 to 8 cups of food daily divided into 2 equal meals. With a little experimenting I found that the same amount of food divided into 4 daily servings with the last serving given at bedtime and all servings given with one Gas-X has almost completely eliminated Huey s noisy tummy. Thank you Melanie!! It s great info. I tried it on Pickles and have seen improvement with her Noisy Yummy! As always use good judgment in the health and welfare of your big dog. Remember to consult your regular Veterinarian when you have questions and concerns! A special thought for all our spring puppies; Owning a Great Dane is life-changing! They make us better people.
