6 Page Pet-Related Legislations One of our legislative watchdogs, Jerry Heap, reviewed the pet-related legislature that would go into effect at the beginning of Below is a summary of those new laws. If you have any questions regarding this information or upcoming legislation, please feel free to contact Jerry at heap@barsnakes.com This new year brings some new pet related legislation from the California Senate. Excerpts from these bills indicate to me that there is little that dog fanciers have to worry about. The first one, SB1806, prohibits leaving an animal in a hot car unattended. The language allows that dogs can still be left in cars, but must be cared for. So carefully attended animals in cars at dog shows would be ok. "This bill would state findings and declarations regarding the consequences of leaving companion animals unattended inside closed vehicles in the heat. This bill would provide that leaving or confining an animal in any unattended motor vehicle under conditions that endanger the health or well-being of an animal due to heat, cold, lack of adequate ventilation, or lack of food or water, or other circumstances that could reasonably be expected to cause suffering, disability, or death to the animal is a crime." This bill, SB1578, makes it a crime to leave a dog tethered to a fixed object for an unreasonable amount of time. It makes no mention of crates or exercise pens. The wording is "prohibit a person from tethering, fastening, chaining, tying, or restraining a dog to a dog house, tree, fence, or other stationary object." " Reasonable period means a period of time not to exceed three hours in a 24-hour period, or a time that is otherwise approved by animal control." The last, SB1349, was enacted to strengthen the laws regarding cockfighting. Language is in the bill that prohibits the use of dogs for baiting or fighting. "for amusement or gain, causes any bull, bear, or other animal, not including any dog, to fight with like kind of animal or creature, or causes any animal, including any dog, to fight with a different kind of animal or creature, or with any human being;, or who, for amusement or gain, worries or injures any bull, bear, dog, or other animal, or causes any bull, bear, or other animal, not including any dog, to worry or injure each other". Please any questions regarding these new laws, or any other concerns you may have to me and will do what I can to find the answers.
7 Page 1 A Happy Holiday Rescue Recently, two of our club members, Cindy Hurley & Mary Shoaf, have assumed positions a s our Re scue Referral Chairpersons. Here is a story by Cindy about a happy-ending for a mantle Great Dane. Here is a story of Christmas Cheer for Marmaduke a one-year-old male Mantle Great Dane. The local SPCA in Bakersfield contacted me. They had taken in a Great Dane that they named Marmaduke. He was very thin and was found wandering the streets in Delano, California. I went to see Marmaduke in late September and knew I had to get some good food to the boy. He had a beautiful face and head but a very thin body. The SPCA was willing to keep him at their facility until I could find a good family to adopt him. Tracy at the SPCA would take care of doing the adoption through the SPCA. I began taking food to Marmaduke and visiting with him when I could. Mary and I had some people on our list who were interested, but after talking to them they were not right for Marmaduke. In November I had a conversation with one of my college students. Nathaniel is a teacher working on his clear credential in Special Education. He is married and has recently moved into a new home with a big back yard. We have had many conversations about dogs and he is a real animal lover. He wanted a dog for his new home and has always been very interested in my Danes. I mentioned to him about the Dane that was at the SPCA. That weekend he went out to the shelter and worked with Marmaduke for two hours. The workers at the SPCA were very impressed with Nathaniel and his wife and they decided that Marmaduke had a new home. After Thanksgiving I went to visit Marmaduke in his new home. It was clear to me that it was a great match. Marmaduke was rested and gaining weight. He appeared to love both Nathaniel and his wife. He responded well to me and played with the new toys that I took him. Below is a picture of Marmaduke in his new home. For Dane referrals, please contact: Mary Shoaf at (661) or Cindy Hurley at (661) or churley@bak.rr.com
