2 GAPFA s mission GAPFA s mission is to support the health and wellbeing of pets and to promote the benefits of living with them, through the development of consensus based guidance for the global pet food industry, thereby enhancing its sustainability and credibility 2

3 GAPFA objectives To harness the collective knowledge and experience of the global pet food industry in order to provide reference points for global standards and positions To promote adherence to food safety and nutritional standards enabling manufacturers to deliver wholesome, healthy and nutritious prepared pet foods To promote the feeding of prepared pet food to support the health and wellbeing of pets To develop and disseminate educational resources, that highlight and enhance the benefits of human pet interaction 3

7 GAPFA Food Safety & Trade Facilitation WS The Food Safety and Trade Facilitation Workstream focuses on product safety and works towards a consensus on how industry can address barriers to the international trade of pet food products Key projects set by the Food Safety & Trade Facilitation WS: OIE Chapter for Pet Food GAPFA Global Pet Food Safety Guidance 7

8 Developing guidelines for the production of nutritionally balanced pet food 8

9 GAPFA Nutrition WS The Nutrition Workstream focuses on the development of guidelines to industry and governments for the production of nutritionally balanced pet food for maintaining the health of cats and dogs Key projects set by the Nutrition WS: Development of globally aligned, scientifically-based nutritional standards for dogs and cats, to address the differences between AAFCO 1 & FEDIAF guidelines Engagement with NASEM 2 and NRC 3 to provide nutrient recommendations based on scientific reviews Collaboration with AAFCO and FEDIAF to enable continuous improvement in the global production of safe and nutritious pet food AAFCO - Association of American Feed Control Officials NASEM - National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine NRC - National Research Council 9

11 GAPFA Communications WS The Communications WS focuses on communication and education of external stakeholders, and information-sharing with members, regarding the global pet food industry, pet food safety, dog and cat nutrition and responsible pet ownership Key projects set by the Communications WS in 2017: Development of fact sheets with aligned key messages about pet food Flagging any major alerts affecting the global pet food industry 11
