I hope everyone had a great weekend. I know I sure did but it was super busy. I thought it might slow down when Monday hit but instead it has gotten even busier. The new school year is right around the corner. Larry says he is ready to start. He will be in middle school this year so he is very excited me on the other hand a bit nervous. 4 Fun Facts about July The birthstone for July is the Ruby, which symbolizes contentment. The Zodiac signs for July are Cancer (June 21 July 22) and Leo (July 23 August 22). The birth flower for July is the water lily. The month of July was named after Julius Caesar. This was a decision made by the Roman Senate in 44 BC as July was the month of his birth. The 38 th President of the United States, Gerald R. Ford, was born on July 14, The first atomic bomb was set off by scientists in Alamogordo, New Mexico on July 16, On July 5, 1971, Amendment 26 was proclaimed which set the voting age at 18 in the United States. Until the 18 th century, the word July in English had the stress on the first syllable and rhymed with truly. July 27 th is National Day of the Cowboy. Hip and Knee Pain The More You Know Written by VaLenia Meeks Milling If you missed the dinner and talk at the Summer Palace in Sylvester on July 14 th, you missed a wonderful meal and an informative presentation. The event was sponsored by Tift Regional Joint Replacement and Spine Center and featured Dr. David Banks, Orthopedic Surgeon with Georgia Sports Medicine in Tifton, as guest speaker. He spoke mainly about hip and knee problems. According to Dr. Banks, knee problems outweigh hip problems 4:1. Signs and symptoms of hip and/or knee problems are swelling, pain, immobility, stiffness and the site being warm to touch. He pointed out that while weight is not usually the cause of hip/knee problems, it can add to the severity of the symptoms. Weight places extra stress on the joints. There is 3 pounds of pressure for every 1 pound of body weight. If a person weighs 150 pounds, there are 450 pounds of pressure being placed on the hips and knees. A topic I found interesting from the presentation was arthritis. There are more than 100 types of arthritis with the most common type being osteoarthritis. Dr. Banks emphasized the importance of using caution when alternating ice and heat for hip/knee pain due to the danger of blistering the area. He also talked about the Joint Replacement and Spine Care Center in Tifton, Georgia. It is a comprehensive approach that brings together a team of experienced and skilled surgeons with specially-trained nurses, therapists and technicians. The goal is to provide seamless, coordinated care, and get patients back to their favorite activities as soon as possible. The Joint Replacement and Spine Care Center believes that the key to better outcomes is a commitment to provide patients with a thorough understanding and knowledge of what to expect during their surgical experience. Knowing what to expect each step of the way goes a long way toward reducing stress and anxiety and preparing patients for as smooth a recovery as possible. Prior to surgery, patients receive an informative pre-op class for themselves as well as their family, a Patient Guidebook, and educational displays answering the most frequently asked questions. The Joint Replacement and Spine Care Center is committed to excellence. They are continuously evaluating and measuring their performance to help ensure they provide the highest quality program possible. 7 Public Health and CDC Join Forces with Tobacco Prevention Campaign Smoking remains the leading cause of preventable death and disease in the United States, killing more than 480,000 Americans each year, says Worth County Health Department Nurse Manager Gina Connell. The only proven strategy to protect yourself and the others around you from harm caused by smoking is to never smoke, she said, and if you do smoke or use tobacco products, to quit. Because of the impact tobacco use has on health, in 2012 the National Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) launched the first-ever paid national tobacco education campaign, Tips From Former Smokers. The Tips campaign, which is now running in Southwest Health District, features compelling stories of former smokers living with smoking-related diseases and disabilities and the toll smoking-related illnesses have taken on them. The campaign also features nonsmokers who have experienced life-threatening episodes as a result of exposure to secondhand smoke, Connell said. Tips ads focus on health issues caused by smoking or exposure to secondhand smoke including: Cancer (lung, throat, head and neck, colorectal) Stroke Asthma Diabetes COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) Preterm birth Vision loss Buerger s disease Gum disease Smoking and HIV Dual use (use of both cigarettes and at least one other type of tobacco product) Connell emphasized that it is important to recognize that smoking causes immediate damage to the smoker s body. Further, the damage can lead to long-term effects, she said. A second point is that for every smoking-related death, at least 30 Americans live with a smoking-related illness, Connell said. Finally, now is the time to quit smoking. If you want help, free assistance is available. For assistance, contact QUIT- NOW or The deaths, disabilities, lost productivity and suffering caused by tobacco use is preventable, Connell said. A Quit Guide is available with information about coping with cravings, learning about medications that can help, telling you what to do if you slip, and more. Make this the day you free yourself from tobacco. Be sure and like Southwest Georgia Public Health District on Facebook for more great information just like this! 8 Celebrating National Blueberry Month In 2003, July was proclaimed as National Blueberry Month by the United States Department of Agriculture. Blueberries are native to North America and are grown in 35 of the 50 states. They are related to cranberries and bilberries. Blueberries are packed with nutritional benefits. Experts often include blueberries in their Top 10 Lists of the healthiest foods. Like many fruits, blueberries are rich in fiber, low in calories and boast Vitamin C and other important antioxidants. They get their deep purpleblue color from anthocyanin pigments that have long been thought to have health benefits. Blueberries can be used to make many dishes such as pancakes, pies, coffee cakes and muffins. They can also be used as a topping for hot or cold breakfast cereal. Not only do they produce a tasty fruit, blueberry bushes are an attractive addition to any yard or garden. They produce beautiful white flowers in the spring, and their leaves turn a bright shade of red in the fall. For more information on the uses for and benefits of blueberries, visit Written by VaLenia Meeks Milling A+ Home Oxygen and Medical Equipment held its ribbon Cutting and Grand Opening on Thursday. 11 A Day at the Beach A trip to the beach can be a fun, relaxing way to spend your summer vacation. Included are some tips to keep your beach trip safe. Obey the signs. Warning flags come in different colors and have different meanings depending on which state you are in. Green flags usually indicate ideal swimming conditions while red flags usually indicate strong current and rough surf. If swimming is permitted during red flag conditions, it is best to swim near a lifeguard station for additional safety. Be prepared for ocean swimming. Ocean swimming is much different than swimming in a pool. There are strong waves, marine life, an uneven ocean floor, and possible sharp shells or rocks. Rip currents often form near piers and therefore swimming near them is not recommended. If you find yourself stuck in a rip current, it is important to swim parallel to the shoreline. Once you are out of the current, turn and swim towards the beach. It is best not to swim alone. If you are just beginning to swim, a life jacket should be worn for added safety. Pack the necessities. The beach gets hot in the summer. It is important to stay hydrated and cool. Some beach necessities include water, a beach umbrella or hat, sandals, sunglasses, sunscreen, a towel and a chair. Heat stroke or exhaustion can occur from too much sun exposure. If you have nausea, dizziness, headache, fatigue, or feel uncomfortable in any way, seek shade and drink water to cool down your body temperature. If symptoms persist, see a medical professional as soon as possible. Be aware of the weather. Check the weather before planning a day at the beach and pay attention to the weather while you are at the beach. Storms can roll in quickly. Thunderstorms with lightening do not mix well with open beach spaces and ocean water. If you are at the beach when a storm comes in, exit the water immediately and seek shelter until the storm passes. Share your day at the beach with your pets. Some beaches allow pets on the beach during certain seasons and some allow them all year long. If pets are allowed on the beach you are visiting, follow the rules allowed by the beach and be sure to clean up afterwards. Bring water to keep your pet hydrated and safe. Following these tips will help to ensure that you have a fun and safe day at the beach!
