2 N e w f S c o o p s Dreamchaser s Bella Bear (Bella) our almost 4-year-old Rescue girl passed her Canine Good Citizen test today. Bella has been part of our family since Oct 2010, when we adopted her from an all breed rescue in Kentucky. She s our special pocket Newf, being very small in stature but huge in heart. We are extra proud of her today. She lives with her 11-year-old Newf sister, Ursa and her new, two year-old Newf Rescue brother, Takota. 4 I n M e m o r i a m General Lee The Stultz family was so blessed to welcome General Lee into our home. All our words cannot express the joy he brought to our family. We treasure in our hearts and souls the time we had with him. His death was so tragically sudden-- he was gone in an instant. He had a special place he laid in the house that is now empty. Potter and Booker miss him terribly. We would like to thank Cindy and John Flowers and Kathy Hamilton for their help with the General. We miss you, General Lee. Love always, Dan and Carol Stultz Sandy Stultz and Tony Haines 4

5 N C A S p e c i a l t y Having Fun as Time Goes By aka The Diaries of Lady Calza This year, the CNC hosted the Newfoundland Club of America (NCA) Nationals at the Lancaster Host Resort in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Calza and I attended because we wanted to be part of such an exciting event and the club needed us to take some candid pictures; Calza and I had a job to do! Because of a tire problem with the Newf Mobile, we didn t get a chance to attend events until Monday. As it started to rain, I decided it was not worth ruining my camera equipment, so Calza and I did some touring. Tuesday ended up being a rather busy day for us. We finished our photographic coverage of the SENC Draft Test. I also took pictures of the newest show class, the Four to Six Month Puppy Class. This event proved difficult to photograph. The sheer size of the breed ring caused me to try using a zoom, along with a flash. Only about 12 pictures out of 72 pictures taken were useable! I was able to make adjustments to enhance the results obtained at the Opening Ceremonies later in the afternoon. We were batting one thousand in the picture department by the Welcome Party in the evening. Wednesday, Calza and I headed out to take pictures of the Obedience trials. I ran into Karen Steinrock, who asked if I could take pictures at Top 20 in the afternoon. Fortunately, I was able to get a good seat and didn t have to use the zoom lens. The flash pictures turned out perfectly. On Friday, I took pictures of the Rescue Parade. Afterward, I went to get the pictures developed and had to turn back due to the traffic. This turned out to be a GOOD thing, as Calza and I were scheduled to participate in the Honors Parade. Calza has her Championship, so I thought that it would be nice to participate in this event. We got back late, but they got us into the ring right away. Calza got her medal and made Daddy look good at the same time. Time goes by too quickly when one is having fun! The week at National Specialty went faster than most weeks have gone by in my life-- the 2014 Specialty was an incredible experience. Brad Cole 5

15 R e s t o n P e t F i e s t a Fiesta Time is Here AKA The Diaries of Lady Calza Every year, Calza and I head to the Reston Pet Fiesta, held in Reston, Virginia; Reston is a suburb of Washington, DC. This year, the event was held on Saturday, May 3rd and was attended by several thousand people. The CNC and CNC Rescue regularly have a booth at this event because the huge draw is an excellent way to promote our Club and Newf Rescue. David Rothschild very capably chaired this year s event. Calza and I left Friday, which happened to be Calza s ninth birthday. I was hoping that attending the Pet Fiesta would be a good birthday present and help make Calza feel better. Calza came back from Nationals with an inner ear infection and a ruptured eardrum. Fortunately, we went to the veterinarian before leaving and Calza got an excellent report! She is going to continue on antibiotics for the next few weeks, but she is doing MUCH better. We arrived at the Pet Fiesta around 10:00 on Saturday. Some of our group was already there and David had the swimming pool filled with ice up and running. Our group seemed to be very popular and fielded many questions. All in all, it was a great event and we appreciated all of the CNC people and Newfs who helped out. --Brad Cole 15

19 C N C N e w f N e w s Jim and Betsy Wasson with Banjo (left) and Mason (right) GENTLE GIANTS! That s what Newfoundland s are known as, because of their laidback and gentle dispositions. The breed originated in the Canadian Province of Newfoundland and is the ancestor breed of the popular Labrador and Chesapeake Bay retrievers. Whenever people see our Newfy s for the first time, they always ask the same questions, so here are the answers: They are not St. Bernard s Mason (male) weighs about 135 lbs and Banjo (female) weighs about 90 lbs, but many Newfy s are as big as 150 lbs. Less than you think: 4 5 cups per dog, per day. Yes, they have webbed feet. All the time hair everywhere... slobber too! They live in the house and sleep wherever they want, except not on furniture or beds (although they sometimes test the rule) Black, black on white, brown and grey. 19

20 C N C N e w f N e w s Banjo (AKA Logan s Run Bluegrass Ceilidh, CD, RE, CGC, TDI) came to us as a puppy from a Newfy Breeder in PA. She will be 9 yrs old on April Fools Day, but in the time since she was a puppy she has earned obedience titles and has become a certified Therapy Dog, an ability she has demonstrated in care centers for the elderly. Mason (AKA CH Allegiance Carved N Stone Oldbay), now 7 ½, was given to us 4 years ago by a friend in Va who is a Newfy breeder and show dog handler, by which time Mason had earned his title as a Champion Show Dog. We refer to him as our Velcro dog because he always clings to us wherever we go. Together, we moved to Bulle Rock from Bel Air last October. Jim is a retired Army Colonel and Betsy still works part-time as a nurse at Brightview Assisted Living in Bel Air. -submitted by Jim Wasson Jim and Banjo --this article is reprinted with permission from Precious Pets, in the April 2014 issue of Life at the Rock, a monthly publication of the Bulle Rock Community Association, published by Neighborhood Networks Publishing, Inc. 20

24 S p r i n g F u n D a y Springtime is Fun Time! aka The Diaries of Lady Calza The CNC held its annual Spring Fun Day on Saturday, May 17, 2014 at Lake Accotink Park in Springfield, Virginia. For those who have never been, it is a VERY fun event attended by LOADS of people. David Rothschild did an outstanding job of hosting the event and bringing everything together. Calza and I left Williamsburg the day before the event and stayed at our usual dogfriendly hotel in Manassas. There was a dog show being held in the area as well as our event. This local dog show ended up causing an unusual turn of events for me later in the weekend. Spring Fun Day was extremely well attended; there were boat rides, games, and plenty of food. David Rothschild had rented a U-Haul to carry the carting supplies used for the afternoon carting demo. Ironically, he didn t notice until he got home that the advertisement picture on the side of the trailer for NEWFOUNDLAND! Mark McKeel, a long time CNC member, hosted the carting seminar in the afternoon. I hadn t seen Mark in a few years and this was the first time he had met Calza. His carting seminar was very informative. After we got back to the motel in Manassas, I fed Calza and took her for a walk. As we got on the elevator, I recognized a lady with a Greater Swiss Mountain Dog. We immediately recognized each other; the lady was an old family friend I hadn t seen in 15 years. She s now a well-known breeder of Swissies and was attending the dog show in Manassas. Unfortunately, her female Swissie and Calza growled at each other from opposite ends of the elevator for the entire ride; we ll need to get reacquainted later! -Brad Cole 24

25 Editor s Finds I still have the leads and collars, the feeding bowls of all my Newfies these together with four cigar boxes with their ashes in are all I have to remind me of twenty wonderful years during which they were my constant companions. There are also the few photos on the dining room wall and if you look at my Twitter page you will see them in situ as I enjoy them. It was after I had already written five fictional books that I felt ready for book based closely on these years, I altered very little by way of the story or the action of the dogs it would have been wrong to alter anything about their individual characters. In my book Life with my Newfoundlands I have tried to show my approach to living with them and the huge return I received from them. Sybil Powell available from Amazon as a Kindle Edition ($5) and as a paperback ($10.50) Bark styles itself as The magazine about modern dog culture. NCA Representative Chuck Basham Will send to Bear Fare to place an announcement for NCA Nomination Committee. Publicity Alice Harwell Posted in the following Face book pages regarding our Cheryl Dondino-Water Training Seminar. All posts have either the flyer or direct link included. Newfoundlands - Upcoming Water and Draft Tests, SENC, Inc. - Southeastern Newfoundland Club, Inc.,New Pen Del Newfoundland Club, Bear Mountain Newfoundland Club and Penn-Ohio NC CNC has event on web page and Face book. Rescue Donna McConn This month no new rescues were brought in. Updates on fosters/adoptions: Abby and Mindy are in their new home in Richmond, VA. Barefoot/Bearfoot, is now being fostered by the Dodd s in Leesburg. He is still being bathed once per week because of his skin issues. Margaret Marcus has volunteered to pick him up and take him to the grooming place for his bath...he has been on the diabetes meds with no improvement. He seems happy and is getting around good considering his age of 9 years and physical impairments. He will be going for a checkup next week and to discuss alternative diabetic treatment. Sassie is still at Barb Fellers (foster) who has been working with her on training needs. Three private adoptions were done this month. CNC assist in these private adoptions, but does not take the Newf into the fold of the club. In most of these cases the Newf is readily able to move into a new home, avoiding the stress of foster care and beneficial for the Newf in the long run. A new CNC Rescue banner was ordered to be used specifically for Rescue functions to promote our club. The banner was $ and was approved prior to our meeting due to getting it done and mailed prior to Reston Pet Fiesta. o Ratification of the approval by BOD, (KP/CB). Resident Agent Jim Wasson. Reston is set with insurance. No reports of incidents from National Specialty; KP requires another rider. Reston Pet Fiesta Dave Rothschild Need more volunteers to man the booth. DMC will send to membership. Working on a coin donation box.(dmc) Spring Fun Day Dave Rothschild Working on activities for event. Confirmed May 17, 2014 as the day of the event. Ways and Means Needs New Chairperson. KP will head up the search. Website Chuck Basham Up to date. Williamsburg Annual Membership Luncheon and Parade Dotty Hudson. 20 rooms have been blocked at La Quinta Inn in Williamsburg on Capital Landing Rd. Working on catering, need assistance. Working Dog Julia Sharkey Set for Water Workshop at Codorus Park for June 14 th and 15 th with Cheryl Dondino. o Need approval for expenditures for Cheryl Dondino once confirmed. (plan, rental car, hotel) Registration is currently open and limited to 25 dogs. Alice Harwell is working on publicity. 31
