5 C N C P a n c a k e B r e a k f a s t Of Pancakes and Walking Newfs AKA The Diaries of Lady Calza Every March, a hearty group of CNC ers heads to Cockeysville, Maryland for a Pancake Breakfast held at Oregon Ridge Lodge. Oregon Ridge Lodge is part of Oregon Ridge State Park and is quite a nice place. The park personnel tap the maple trees that grow there and turn the sap into Maple Syrup, which is served during the Pancake Breakfast. This year, the Pancake Breakfast was scheduled for Saturday, March 1st and Sunday, March 2nd. Our group of Newf fanciers planned attending on Saturday, with Sunday as the rain/snow date. Fortunately, Saturday was beautiful, so we met up with our Newfs as planned. We had a beautiful, sunny sky and cool temperatures. Snow was still on the ground from an earlier storm. As usual, Trish Fornadley s careful planning and organizing showed; we had a record turnout for the event! Our CNC group enjoyed the pancake breakfast, then went for a two mile walk around the park in order to burn off calories. The group seemed to really enjoy the snow covered hills and other features of the park. It was the first time Calza and I had experienced this event with snow on the ground! Calza and I would like to thank Trish for arranging this occasion and we also thank all of the people and their Newfs who participated. It is certainly one of my favorite events on the CNC calendar! -Brad Cole CNCBearFareIssue106EarlySpring2014 5

9 V e r y C o o l N e w s! Pet Oxygen Masks Donated to Cocalico Area Fire Crew DONNA WETHERHOLD Correspondent Pets can be innocent victims, even in a minor house fire. When they are rescued by firefighters, pets often succumb to effects of smoke inhalation. Dr. John ONeill, veterinarian and co-owner of Adamstown Veterinary Hospital, recently read a magazine article about a number of puppies in Sharon, Conn., that were rescued from a fire and survived, thanks to canine oxygen masks used by fire fighters. After determining that no local fire company had oxygen masks for pets, ONeill and Dr. Erin K. Murphy, co-owner of the veterinary practice, purchased three of the units and donated them to the Adamstown, Reamstown and Smokestown fire departments. The kits cost about $100 each and consist of air tubing to be connected to an oxygen tank and masks in three sizes, each with a flexible gasket to fit various facial shapes of dogs, cats and other small animals. Jill Renfrew, office administrator of the Adamstown facility, said smoke inhalation causes the same lung problems in pets as it does in humans. After being revived by oxygen at the scene of a fire, an animal can be transported to a veterinary hospital for treatment and have a good chance for survival. Regina Haldeman and Ryan Krimes, EMTs from Reamstown Fire Department and Donny Stover, deputy fire chief of Smokestown Fire Department, recently received instructions on using the animal oxygen masks. ONeill had a willing volunteer for the rescuers to practice on-- his 110-pound Newfoundland, Bronte. The 18-month-old gentle giant sat patiently as the responders took turns fitting the mask over her muzzle. They also had a chance to work with Brighton who, at 15 weeks, tips the scales at 45 pounds. Stover said animals typically either "are the first ones out the door" in case of a fire, or they try to hide and are overcome by smoke or fire. He does not recall a recent incident when an animal could have been saved by the masks, but now he is prepared for future use. To alert a first responder to the presence of a pet in the home, residents may obtain window stickers from their local fire departments. Bronte displays that perfect Newfie aplomb while helping an EMT become familiar with the Canine Oxygen Mask. Brighton helps Dr. O Neill demonstrate that the Canine Oxygen Mask can work with smaller dogs! CNCBearFareIssue106EarlySpring2014 9
10 H e a l t h N e w s Obesity: Leading Cause of Poor Pet Health reprinted with permission from the column Pet Wise by Iris Katz for the The Advocate of Westminster/Finksburg MD Veterinarians estimate that 60% of the animals in their practices are obese or overweight. As with humans, excessive weight causes many of the same health problems in our pets: diabetes, heart and lung diseases, cancers and orthopedic disorders (like arthritis and joint problems.) In addition, obese pets are at increased risk during surgery because their internal organs are surrounded by fat, which displaces them from their correct position and interferes with normal functioning. All of these factors shorten the life expectancy of our companion animals. According to the VCA Animal Hospital website, obesity is defined as weighing 30% more than the idea weight for a given pet. The website clarifies the cause of obesity as the accumulation of excess energy stored as fat. This occurs when pets receive more calories than they need or utilize. How do you know if your pet is overweight? When well-meaning friends, relatives, your pet s breeder, or especially your vet comments that your pet looks pudgy, take notice! You can also objectively check your cat or dog by using the following methods: Can you feel your pet s ribs without pressing? When viewing your standing pet from above, do you see a waistline between the back of the ribs and hips? When viewing your standing pet from the side, does your pet s belly tuck up from the bottom of the ribcage to inside the thighs? Your pet is likely to be overweight if he fails these tests. Anther source for determining the ideal weight for purebred dogs and cats is to study the breed standards that can be found on the American Kennel Club s and Cat Fancier s Association s websites. Most of the breed standards provide the weight ranges for males and females but note that some purebred pet specimens may be oversized or undersized. Owners should not attempt starting pets on crash or fad diets and strenuous exercise programs. Always begin with a thorough veterinary evaluation. The vet will need to determine if a pet s obesity is due to an underlying medical issue such as hypothyroidism. Also, the vet will need to examine the pet for any pre-existing conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, metabolic disorders and orthopedic problems. The evaluation may involve analysis of blood, urine and stool samples, x-rays and probably ultrasound. Test results will determine the appropriate program for weight reduction. This may include changing the pet s diet to a prescription or commercial brand, reduced calorie pet food, substituting low-calorie treats (like carrot sticks) for the junk high-calorie dog treats or people snacks. A metabolic prescription diet for dogs and dogs (developed by the Hills Company) is available at most veterinary hospitals and has been achieving successful results. Frozen string beans may be added to a dog s food to aid in weight reduction, but consult your vet first. The May 2002 Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association reported the results of a 14- CNCBearFareIssue106EarlySpring
11 H e a l t h N e w s cont d The May 2002 Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association reported the results of a 14-year, groundbreaking study which involved 48 Labrador Retrievers. This study revealed, dogs fed to an ideal body weight throughout their lives: lived almost two years longer, stayed healthier longer with delayed treatment for chronic conditions such as Osteoarthritis had lower blood sugar levels, blood pressures and heart rates were observed to have fewer visible signs with aging, such as graying muzzles and reduced activity at a later age. Our methods of feeding pets may also need to be altered. It can be misleading when reading the suggested amount to feed pets based on the instructions provided on pet food bags or cans, as people may interpret that to mean the pet s current weight. Keep the pet s ideal weight as the goal when measuring out meals. Feeding dogs and cats two small meals daily will help them feel more satisfied, rather than feeding them one large meal. Leaving food out all day for dogs and cats to free feed increases the odds for obesity. A local veterinarian pointed out that free choice feeding has resulted in a generation of cats prone to metabolic diseases in addition to the ones listed for dogs. Increasing a pet s activity level is another component to a successful weight reduction program. Brisk on-leash 30 minute walks around the block twice daily (starting gradually,) retrieving games on a safe surface or a romp in an enclosed area can provide a dog with exercise to lose weight, improve his overall well being and further bond with his owner. Cats can be provided with interactive and safe toys, cat furniture to climb and explore, and outdoor exploration (by wearing a harness with a leash attached) to perk up their metabolism and mood. For a weight reduction program for your pet to be successful, all the human members of your household must be on the same Page. This means that no one is allowed to sneak forbidden treats (especially table foods) to pets, which could sabotage the program! As the VCA website states, The great news is that weight reduction is about 60% diet and 40% exercise. Keeping our pets slender for life provides many bonuses. Owners save money by reducing pet food expenses and veterinary bills, and our beloved pets may become healthier and share their lives with us longer! --Many thanks to Karen Parry for submitting this article and obtaining permission to reprint it!
