2 VOLUME 30, ISSUE 7 PAGE 5 DAWG TALK, BY GUNNAR Well, Fun Day has come and gone. And although I had a blast, I can t believe of all people to beat me at my favorite contest, none other than my big brother Radar and little sister Star. Who knew that I d done such a great job of training them while they have been chasing me. I ll have to remember that for the future. Sometimes fun is fun until I don t finish at the front. I do have to brag about my Hot Dog relay team who CRUSHED the competition. It was great having my sister Maude there to strengthen the team. Fun Day brought out some new people, new dogs and a great day. Everyone should be sure to mark their calendars for Fun Day 2009, my buddy Adam Hoffman ran everything superbly and should be very proud of what he did. He of course was too busy to run me, but I still had a fabulous time. Before we know it, the autumn will be upon us and we all know that means BIRDS. That and food are my two favorite words in the English language. Who ever came up with those is a genius. I hope all my fellow red dogs out there will have a wonderful fall and enjoy the time they are given to point and retrieve those wonderful upland game birds. So for a month, I ve been temporarily relocated to my mom s room. There are 9 new critters growing up in what was my room. I don t mind sharing my space, but they are also keeping my play buddy busy. I hope these little ones are able to play soon, I m ready to start training the next group of 50-yard dash runners. I don t know if any one else has been hearing the grumble, but this time of year sounds like Nationals time. Deadlines are quickly approaching for ads, entries and finalizing plans. This year they are being held in Tucson, AZ. I m not sure where that is, but it sounds like it is a ways from home. Be sure to check out the VCA web site on any details and specific information you may be looking for regarding the Nationals. This is always a nice opportunity to see old friends from around the country, meet new ones and of course see a lot of nice dogs! The field trial is before the agility, obedience and show in November. I hope you are all enjoying your summers as it comes to an end. Be sure to take time to enjoy the small thing in life because before we know it they are gone. If any of you are getting out in the field soon, think of me and point, that would make me very happy. For now, I am going to take a nap, until next time, Gunnar. The average dog is nicer than the average person. Andrew A. Rooney

Watch for the wonderful photos that will grace the 2009 calendar, represent the Twin Cities Vizsla Club and this wonderful breed. Thank you to everyone who submitted photos and also to everyone who took the time to vote during Fun Day. We continue to have a terrific turnout with photos that get better and better every year. 6 VIZSLA VOICE PAGE 9 He called me Bee An Autobiography I was fast and flashy right out of the box. I loved to run and I loved birds. I was 4 months old when the first bird, a woodcock, fell in front of me. I tried my best to swallow it, and almost did before he got it out of my mouth. Loved the taste and smell of that bird! No matter what the cover; I tore through it in search of birds- big and small. I was always thin. It made me faster. He said I had style and grace; almost like I danced through the woods. Nothing could stop me. Later in life, we took NAVHDA Tests. The boss was happy and said I did very well in them. I just had fun. The water parts weren t my favorite, but I decided to be as cooperative as I could be. After all, he gave me all the care and attention I could have wanted. We did everything together. Chasing squirrels, cats and possums up a tree and then barking treed was a specialty of mine. I was the only one of the girls that did that I was different. It was about the only time I found it necessary to bark. I especially liked facing off with raccoons. At 38 pounds; sometimes they were bigger than me! Porcupines were easy to catch and tasted great. The boss didn t like pulling the quills neither did I. At home, I liked to curl up on the couch in just a little spot, but I d just as soon sit in the lap of anyone who sat near me. A good swing in the log chair outside, was always fun. Eating food was a chore but I loved sweet corn right on the plant! He said I ate up the profits! All I could think was: Hey, I m just a normal Vizsla! Wind River Bee-Line-to-Birds (Bee) is sadly missed by Senna, Haley and Chris Petro June 14, 2002 September14, 2007

10 VIZSLA VOICE PAGE 14 XYLITOL DANGER Xylitol is a sugar alcohol used in candy and chewing gum. It is also found in some pharmaceuticals and oral health products such as chewable vitamins and throat lozenges. It can also be used in home baking. While Xylitol is safe for humans, it can be harmful to dogs. The compound doesn t affect glucose levels in people, but when ingested by dogs it can cause a dangerous surge of insulin. (In as little as 15 minutes, the blood sugar of a dog that has eaten gum containing Xylitol may register a marked drop in blood sugar.) At higher doses, Xylitol is believed toxic to the canine liver. Just three grams of Xylitol can kill a 65-pound dog. Because the amount of sweetener used in sugar-free chewing gums varies by manufacturer and product, the number of sticks of gum that would prove fatal to a pooch of that size can t be stated with precision. As a general rule of thumb, between eight and ten pieces of gum might be deadly to a 65-pound canine, but a smaller dog could easily die after ingesting far less (perhaps as few as two sticks of gum). A dog that has eaten an item containing Xylitol can be rapidly nit by a dangerous drop in blood sugar that causes weakness, lethargy, loss of coordination, collapse, and seizures. Those symptoms can develop within 30 minutes, and a dog so afflicted will need immediate veterinary treatment to survive. Without help, irreversible brain trauma occurs and the patient dies. Xylitol also appears to cause severe liver damage in dogs within 24 hours. According to a study published in the October 1, 2006 Journal of America Veterinary Medical Association, of eight dogs who had ingested Xylitol, five died of liver failure, and ad additional three canine deaths that occurred after the study was completed were also determined to stem from that cause. While more research needs to be done to categorically prove that Xylitol actually causes canine liver failure, at this time indications point that way. If you think your dog has consumed sugarless gum or any other product containing Xylitol, call your veterinarian immediately. Most likely you will be instructed to bring your pet in to have vomiting induced and IV fluids started, but if you live more than an hour away from a vet, you may have to induce vomiting at home. Veterinary treatment generally involves 24-hour hospitalization and infusion with intravenous fluids containing glucose. Your dog s blood sugar will be monitored every few hours and the dose of flucose being fed to him by IV adjusted as needed. If liver values are normal after 24 hours, your dog will be sent home. As to how to prevent such poisonings, recognize that dogs are long on sweet tooth and short on judgment and act accordingly. Do not leave testy items lying around. Put sugar-free gums and candies where dogs can t get at them. Keep chewable vitamins out of the way too. If you bake with Xylitol, store the resultant goodies well out of your pets reach and do not hand-feed them bits of Xylitol-laced muffins as a treat no matter how much they beg. Never rely on the presumption that what is safe for a human to ingest is equally safe for your pets. (Raisins and grapes, for instance, can prove deadly to your pooch.) Thank you to George Noren and Beth Nash for submitting this important information on Xylitol.

13 Twin Cities Vizsla Club th Street West Lakeville, MN WE RE ON THE WEB! For the Dog Days of Summer - Keep your Dog Cool and get them used to water in your backyard. Fill a plastic kiddie pool with water (start out shallow) gradually adding more water each day. Your dog will stay cool and also entertained. For added entertainment you can add toys that float and sink OR add a scoop of crappie minnows. You can also use feeder goldfish (they don t seem to be as hardy and get caught quite easily). Your dog will be entertained for hours and learn to like the water when they are chasing minnows around. Have not observed any ill effects from eating a few minnows. If your dog likes to dig and you don t want to use water, fill the kiddie pool up with sand and some of their toys. It becomes a great game where they can dig their hearts content. From your friends - Bella the Vizsla, Gimli the GSP and Luna the Jack Russell Terrier in the Felicetta household
