8 President s Desk...? Bangalore is is once more making noises regarding management of stray dogs. The statutory body vested with the maintenance of stray animals in the city of Bangalore is being accused by the animal Welfare activists for their negligent attitude in not following the guidelines of the Animal Birth control rules, and the frequent deaths among dogs subjected to ABC. It is unfortunate that activists have gone to the extent of filing police complaints and FIR's have been framed and investigations are on. The honourable Supreme and High courts have made it very clear that stray dogs/animals have the right to live and nobody can prevent the NGO's, RWA's from giving care and feed and attending to the needs and well being of such animals.. If any prohibitory objections against such actions are noticed then they are liable for prosecution under various sections of the Indian penal code. Further the Animal Welfare Board of India has made it very clear that every state of the Indian union should follow/adhere to the laid down rules/ rulings. As regards Karuna, we have processed a centenary logo to go on our letterheads celebrating the centenary of our existence since Our shelter is well equipped and competent Vets are looking after the health and well being of the sheltered animals. On account of the enormous work involved with the inclusion of the new centenary block, the work force has been strengthened. However this again calls for proper financial management. Our humane education programmes are being conducted regularly, such as elocution, essay writing, on the spot painting and quiz competitions are being being conducted and a large number of youth are attracted to these events and to this extent we are able to rope in young people at a tender age to the field of animal welfare. Our shelter attracts visitors and also school children and they get to learn more about animal management, feeding etc. Our no kill policy has been lauded by the welfare groups. Care and treatment is given to needy animals still their natural end. The government seems to be lenient as regards the traditional cruel sports such as bullock cart races, kambala, ritual sacrifice of animals etc. However the Hon. Courts have given rulings banning such events. We continue to educate the people concerned to stop such cruel sports. Karuna is committed to control rabies in the state and take up mass vaccination all over the country to put an end to the deadly disease. The organization is thankful to the Vice chancellor Prof H. Narayanaswamy, Registrar Dr. Shivananda murthy, the Dean, Dr. Placid E D'souza and the faculty members of the KVAFSU. Our technical staff headed by Dr. M.K.Sayeed and Dr. R. Lokesh along with six veterinarians and a few staff comprising of care givers, who are rendering yeoman services. Our admin staff headed by Mrs. Pushpa and Rangalakshmi look after the routine administrative matters of the organization. They are ably assisted by the other staff members /vehicle maintenance staff etc. B.C. Ramakrishna President 4

33 Citation presented to Smt. Aradhana and Sri. Ramakrishna Punja, on the occasion of their being felicitated by KARUNA. The Punjas- a Compassionate Couple Mr. Ramakrishna N. Punja was born and brought up, studied and graduated from Mumbai. His father Mr. Narsu Shetty was a businessman and mother Mrs. Yamuna Shetty was a housewife. The Punjas have their own business and both come from an agricultural background and they have had pets since their childhood. Mrs. Aradhana R. Punja is born and bred Bangalorean with schooling from Vidhya Vardhaka School and graduation from Ammani's college. Her father Mr. K.R. Shetty was a central government employee and was also industrial advisor in the U.N. Her mother Mrs. Kasturi is a housewife. Together it gives them immense pleasure to be associated with animals where in their love and affection cannot be measured and their innocence is heartfelt. They have adopted many dogs and a few cats at their place in Bangalore. They adopted the dogs in unhealthy conditions and got them treated back to health. They have also adopted ten kittens after the mother was killed by street dogs and also adopted a few cats with leg injuries, which after surgical procedures are now able to walk normally. They have rescued a calf from people transporting it to slaughter house, which he is taking care of on his farm. They have also adopted many other animals which were abandoned near their farm in Bangalore. They feed street animals whenever and wherever they travel and also make sure that all the street dogs are fed from time to time in their presence or when they are traveling and treated if they are sick. All the animals of different species and breeds live together on their farm or home as one family. They have also rescued a few wild animals and birds and handed them over to concerned authorities for further treatment and care. They feel nature has given a lot of things, one among them are animals which are the best companions. Their interest is also into farming. They are thankful to KARUNA for taking care of their rescued dogs in their shelter when there was labour problems on their farm. They have supported Karuna to put up community kennels on the second floor of the centenary building and make it a point to support feeding of the sheltered dogs. They together want to do more for the welfare of animals in whichever way is possible. In appreciation of their contribution to looking after and adopting stray animals and the well-being of all of nature's creations, the Karuna Animal Welfare Association of Karnataka, Bangalore wishes them well in all their future endeavors and proudly felicitates them on this occasion. 29
