10 3.5.2 SLAUGHTERING PROCESS The slaughtering process shall take into account animal welfare in accordance to syariah law Animals slaughtered shall be healthy and approved for slaughter by competent authority Slaughtering knife or blade shall be sharp and free from blood and other impurities Visually separated from one another Stunning is not recommended but can be allowed with conditions

13 GUIDELINES FOR SLAUGHTER OF CATTLE FOR RELIGIOUS PURPOSES This guideline(oct ) covers various aspects involving religious slaughter, slaughter premises and animal welfare. Religious authority, local authority & DVS involved in developing it. Emphasis on: proper restraint of cattle, proper slaughter techniques, handling the carcass (food safety) and proper disposal of waste.

14 AWARENESS & TRAINING ON THE GUIDELINE The guideline was distributed to mosque officials & community leaders A hands-on training program was conducted by DVS officials The training were held in most of the parliamentary constituency. It involved the participation of at least 2000 people. This will be an annual event

17 USE ANIMALS IN RESEARCH AND TEACHING The Animal Act, 1953 and Wildlife Conservation Act, 2010 has provision for such control. The Malaysian Code Of Practice For The Care And Use Of Animals For Scientific Purposes under the supervision of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) is being used currently. The Code emphasises the duty of care that demands a genuine commitment to the welfare of the animals, a respect for the contribution the animals make to research and teaching and a desire to promote the animals wellbeing. Encapsulated in the Code is the need in scientific and teaching activities to consider: the Replacement of animals with other methods; the Reduction in the number of animals used; and the Refinement of techniques used to reduce the adverse impact on animals.

34 AWARENESS: ANIMAL WELFARE DAY Department of Veterinary Services Malaysia (DVS) launched the Animal Welfare Day on 9 th June 2014 Objective: Create awareness on animal welfare to farmers and suppliers of livestock on how to manage and handle livestock properly 500 participants comprising farmers, farmers associations, suppliers of livestock, mosque officials, private companies, NGOs and individuals from related industries were involved Demonstrate how to handle livestock while loading, unloading, restraint and branding. Talk on Animal Welfare in Livestock Handling (ruminants)on the management and handling of animals prior to slaughter.
