4 President s Report he show season is fast coming to an end. I T have only recently returned from the Canterbury shows and the DSC championship show. As per usual this was a much-enjoyed event with great hospitality. The weather was the usual for this time of year, very hot, then very windy, and then very wet. The Samoyeds were well represented in the group and in show lines ups with the brothers Ch Skrownek Sev Kazeel and Ch Skrownek Sev Kazan taking out several awards. Best In Show for the DSC Championship show was Ch Lealsam Artic Oceans. On the whole the Samoyed has continued to be well placed at breed shows this year with Magic getting the last Challenge Certificate required to make him Grand Ch Silvertips A Touch of Magic. Congratulations to this huge achievement to those connected with his breeding and in particular Lyn and Gary Carleton who love and care for Magic. Samoyeds have also been out and about in the obedience ring. I The Samoyeds have been competing in Novice with Ch Angara were well Taiza Tale, Sharon Kelly in Novice with Kelljass represented in Antique Chyna Doll and Sharon s daughter Ashleigh in Elementary with the group Kelljass Alaskan Snow Dream. It is certainly more challenging working a Samoyed in the ring than some breeds but definitely rewarding when you do well and are in the line up with all the Borders and Goldies. I am still hopeful that someone will take up agility or fly-ball with a Samoyed. I recently attended a tricks evening with Aust Ch Anaky Its Party Time and he really enjoyed the evening as did I. Not that I think I will get into dancing dogs but it was interesting to learn what is involved. Summer is nearly upon us and hopefully everyone has attended to their dogs flea and worm treatment and has a nice shady spot for them to lie in with plenty of water available. Please don t leave your Samoyed in a parked car it is just too hot for them and they could overheat and die. Please also take care when you are out walking with them as hard exercise in hot weather may be too much for them too, especially if they are getting on in years. There are currently warnings along the Hutt River due to a poisonous algae bloom so watch for polluted water and any other hazards. Until next year - Merry Xmas and all the best for 2006 with your family, friends and Samoyeds. - Lynne Page 4 Christmas 2005

5 Secretary's Report Hard to believe Xmas is just around the corner and this is our last Sleigh Courier for the year. Hope everyone has their Christmas shopping done or are you like me and leaving it to the last minute. After every Xmas I promise myself that I will start early the following year but never seem to. With all the hot weather coming up... hopefully ;-)... remember your Samoyeds, plenty of fresh water and keep them well groomed. They do tend to suffer in the heat, especially after last summer s heat weather we experienced in the Wellington region. Our fans were on day and night with human and dog alike fighting their way to sit in front of them. We also invested in a paddling pool for our dogs which they had to share with the children but I don't think they minded. It was great to see dogs and children enjoying themselves. By the time this issue goes to print, we would have held our inaugural Snow Dog Match in conjunction with the Sibe and Mal Clubs. This is always a fun day and it would be good if we had more support from our members. The only requirement at this show is that your dog is a Samoyed, a Siberian Husky or an Alaskan Malamute. We welcome pets... entire or desexed so if you weren't able to make this years, please support it next year. The prizes are fantastic. That's all from me so Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all. See you all in Anita Treasurer's Report Membership stands at 50. Membership subscriptions are due for renewal on 1 January We hope that you have found lots of value from your membership this year and will renew for the forthcoming year. A membership form for 2006 accompanies this copy of Sleigh Courier. A copy can also be downloaded from the club web site at -Simeon Page 5 Christmas 2005

12 Toxic algae bloom found in Hutt River 16 November 2005 Pollution tests undertaken by the Cawthron Institute for Greater Wellington, have confirmed the thick green-black slimy algae mat seen on rocks along the banks of the Hutt River is highly toxic and can be harmful to animals and humans. Vets have reported seeing several sick dogs during the week after they had been walking along the Hutt River. It is believed the dogs have eaten algae. One dog has since died. Symptoms include shaking and convulsions. The potentially toxic cyanobacteria Oscillatoria sp has been detected in high abundance and is thought to be the same species which was responsible for five dog deaths in the Waikanae River in the summer of 1998/99. Nic Conland, Pollution Control Officer for Greater Wellington says low rainfall in recent weeks has reduced river flows. He says that as nutrient levels become more concentrated they create near perfect conditions for algale blooms. Nic reminds us that algal blooms are a natural occurrence and not all algae are toxic. STAY AWAY FROM THE HUTT RIVER Hi all, Monday last week I was walking our Spinone along the river bank in Upper Hutt and was told by a WRC ranger not to let my dog go near the river. When I asked him why he said there was a Toxic algae bloom in the Hutt river, which is great as 45% of all tap water in the Wellington region comes from the Hutt River. So be aware. Though it is still safe to walk your dog along the paths next to the river. Gary The Hutt City Council is erecting signs to warn people of the potential hazard of walking dogs along the river banks. His advice is for dog owners to keep clear of the Hutt River until further testing confirms the absence of algae toxins. What is needed is a good downpour to remove algae growth. In the meantime if you see any algal blooms that may be suspicious contact your local council for advice. As ingestion of algae toxins may be harmful to humans, Regional Public Health Medical Officer of Health, Dr Margot McLean, advises that people should avoid contact with algae material on the banks of the Hutt River. In particular, parents or caregivers should supervise young children playing close to the river to ensure they do not touch or eat any Dear All, I almost lost Raven yesterday. While out for a walk at the Hutt River she started losing control of her legs. Within 5 minutes she was posturing and foaming at the mouth. After carrying her back to the car (Thank you Bronwen and Kevin for your help with this and for the support at the vets) she was rushed to the After Hours Vet. The vet thought it might be 1080 and promoted vomiting and put her on an IV. I left her there. Around 10:30pm I called yet again (they knew my voice by the end of the evening) and she was singing in the cage in the background and I was told I could come and get her. It was decided it wasn't 1080, but actually a form of cyanide poisoning from some algae that she had licked at the river. Another dog came in showing the same signs and its owners told the vet it had eaten some algae down at the river. I have to keep an eye on her for the next few days to watch for possible liver damage from the toxins. Please keep an eye on your dog if you decide to walk them around the rivers at the moment. Don't let them drink from stagnant ponds or eat plant material from the riverside. Evidently there was an outbreak two years ago in the Hutt Valley and several dogs were seriously ill. We caught Raven quite early. If we had waited she could have slipped into a coma and/ or died. If you have friends in the area with dogs you might want to warn them as well. Jo algal material. 13 WATERWAYS ALGAE THREAT DURING WEEKEND 21 November 2005 The Hutt City Council is warning Hutt Valley residents over the weekend that the toxic algae bloom in the Hutt River is not restricted to the Hutt River itself. The Greater Wellington Regional Council issued a warning on Wednesday of high toxin levels in Hutt River algae. It has now killed at least two dogs. The Hutt City Council says that the same algae is also in streams, ponds, drainage ditches. There is also a concern that the algae is polluting rural water supplies. Hutt City Environmental Health Officer Dean Bentley says with fine weather expected to continue over the weekend, many people will be outdoors and near watercourses. Even ditches are dangerous, especially for children and pets. It s best to make sure they stay well away from any waterways at the moment. The toxin has already killed at least two dogs in the Hutt Valley, and it s likely to be the same toxin which killed five dogs at Waikanae five years ago. The Council is also advising owners of rural land with their own water supplies that they should check to see if any algae is present. It is a thick black-green slimy mat. If they have any concerns about their water they should find an alternative source. Hutt City Council has erected 67 signs by waterways, and the Upper Hutt City Council a similar number, warning people of the present hazard of swimming and walking dogs along the river and stream banks. The Councils are also now advising that children should also be kept away from shallow water as the algae is also present in some streams, drainage ditches and ponds in both cities. The Greater Wellington Regional Council says the algae will continue to be a threat until a good downpour washes it away. For more information, please contact: Dean Bentley Hutt City Council Ph Cell ph Toxic algae bloom not only in Hutt River Toxic algae Toxic algal bloom not only in Hutt River The thick green-black slimy algae mat seen on rocks along the banks of the Hutt River is highly toxic and can be harmful to animals and humans. Update Thursday, 7 December Although recent rains have cleared the river in the lower reaches of much of the algal bloom, there is still an unknown factor of decaying material being carried from the upper reaches. Please adopt a cautionary approach to all waterways in the area that are connected to the Mangaroa and Hutt Rivers, including small streams and drainage ditches until monitoring and testing provides clear evidence that the waters are healthy and safe to use for recreational purposes. 14 DOGS FROM THE PAST CH SNOWRANGER SMYELCHAK The 1 ST Samoyed I saw was my brothers and sister inlaw s Kimo (later to become CH YURAK STRAKOV) His Sire was CH Kalina Silver Knight imported from Australia by Neilmar Fraser. Pet name Sailor. Sailor sired 19 Registered litters between 1973 and 1981, producing 11 Champions, one of these Champions was CH SNOWRANGER SMYELCHAK. Bred and owned by Tony and Gwen Zentveld, born in a litter of 6 males! Pet name Smylie. Smylie did well in the show ring with many Group and In Show awards, including 4 Best in Show All Breeds. As a young dog, he was a showman and loved the shows. Personally, I felt that his show career was cut short when he got attacked by another dog at a show (not a Samoyed). I am not sure of the facts, but he was never happy showing in Group lineup after that. The last time I saw him at an All Breeds show was 1979 or 1980 National Dog show. He won Best of Breed and was waiting to go in the ring for group. It was so sad to see a beautiful Dog with his taildown and not wanting to be there. Ch Snowranger Smyelchak, one of NZ s top studs Smylie had a lovely head, broad flat skull and a gentle nature, that you couldn t help but like him. That gentle nature is nice to live with, but they don t usually handle the shows when they get frightened there. Smylie did attend some of the Samoyed Club Champ shows in the 80 s. In 1985 was awarded Reserve Dog, just before his 10 th birthday, by Judge Mr M Stokes from Australia. Smylie sired 26 litters which produced 10 NZ and 6 Aust Champions. His last litter was born , 10 ½ years his junior. There was probably two main reasons that Smylie sired so many litters: 1. was his show results 2. that he was one of the few Samoyeds around at that time to have Certificate A Hip Score, which is 4 or less in the Hip scoring system today. H.D. was pretty bad in the 70 s and 80 s. Several breeders were trying hard to get rid of it. To find out more about some of the old dogs from the past. Go into the NZKC Site and look under pedigrees. It will give you a dog s pedigree, a list of any siblings and if it has produced litters. Unfortunately, a bit patchy in the 70 s! But still very interesting. - Anita Shugg Page 14 Christmas 2005

18 MONDAY, 07 NOVEMBER 2005 By ANNA WALLIS A dog owner says Saturday night's fireworks left her dog "screaming" in fear and wants an end to what she calls the misery of pets at Guy Fawkes. Gwen Zentveld's pet samoyed Zari had to be cut out of her kennel at about 11pm on Saturday night after becoming trapped trying to squeeze through the wire netting in her cage to escape the noise. "We heard her screaming. It wasn't barking or yelping... it was a high pitched scream. My husband had to go and get wire cutters to get her out. She had ripped at the wire with her teeth. "Fortunately she is alright but totally stressed out." Mrs Zentveld said she took the photo of their pet while her husband went to get the wire cutters. Ban Fireworks 'Screaming' dog had to be cut free from kennel "I wasn't being callous. I just want to show what happens with animals on Guy Fawkes. The couple had kept their pet inside until about 10pm before putting her outside in the kennel. "We're getting on a bit so we can't really stay up all night. We thought 10pm would be okay and it would start to quieten down." The Zentvelds live at Kimbolton, and Mrs Zentveld said the problem is just as bad in the country as the city, maybe worse. "Noise travels further in the country. And I think because it's the country, kids are out and about a bit more." Mrs Zentveld said Zari had a ripped mouth, a bare patch on her "knee" and was walking with a limp. "She'll be fine. But we've had enough. It's misery for pets. "The fireworks go on for days and it's all hours. I love the public displays... I guess this is a another plug for public displays of fireworks only." However, unlike other regions, fire brigades in the area reported a quiet Guy Fawkes night with few problems. Palmerston North Fire Brigade attended six callouts which all may have been caused by fireworks. "Actually it was a pretty usual number of callouts for a Saturday night," said senior station officer Ian King. "Nothing out of the ordinary. But they were things like fences, letterboxes and trees alight which are likely to have been caused by fireworks." Levin also had a quiet night with no callouts, said fire officer Carl Biesel of the Horowhenua Volunteer Fire Brigade. Palmerston North police said there were a number of public disorder incidents associated with fireworks parties at the weekend but no major trouble. The SPCA and some fire brigades have called for an end to the sale of fireworks and for Guy Fawkes celebrations limited to official displays only. Page 18 Christmas 2005

19 The attached photo is of our Samoyed Zari, fortunately she is alright but totally stressed out due to Guy Fawkes. It wouldn't be so bad if it was only one night a year and preferably a public display, but it can go on for days even weeks in the country area's anyway. Sometimes the weather plays a helping hand in delaying it but there will be someone letting off a few bangs most nights, not only that just when you think it's safe to put them down in the kennel's and you actually go to bed someone else will start letting them off hence the photo. Lets hope the powers that be will finally do something about it, it's not only animals that are suffering, there are many problems that we are all very well aware of. Sincerely, Gwen & Tony Zentveld Sleigh courier Page 19

20 Diabetes Mellitus This is a condition that can affect the Samoyed. Diabetes Mellitus occurs when the body has an insufficient supply of insulin. This is a hormone which is produced in the beta islet cells in the pancreas, which is responsible for regulating the concentration of glucose sugar in the blood and also allowing the body s cells to use the glucose. Glucose is a necessary source of energy for the body s metabolism. The glucose is unable to get into the cells to be utilised if there is insufficient insulin available and consequently there will be a rise in the blood sugar levels. This is known as hyperglycemia. When the glucose level rises so high that the sugar goes into the urine it is known as glucosuria. One of the presenting signs of this disease is finding sugar in the urine. Types of Diabetes Mellitus Insulin Dependant Diabetes Mellitus (IDDM) Type I This is when there are low to non-detectable levels of insulin. This is the most common type found in dogs. Insulin injections given on a rigid schedule will be required. There are a number of possible causes: Genetic susceptibility Infectious diseases (viral) Immune mediated pancreatic beta cell destruction Predisposing diseases, e.g. Cushing s Disease Drugs like steroids and progesterone Risk factors Obesity can lead to type II Pregnancy Early Signs and Symptoms Increased water consumption (known as polydipsia) Increased urination (polyuria) Increased hunger (polyphagia) Weight loss Late Signs and Symptoms Loss of appetite (anorexia) Lethargy Depression Vomiting Enlarged liver (hepatomegaly) Recent weight loss after obesity Bilateral cateracts. Non-Insulin-Dependant Diabetes Mellitus (NIDDM) Type I I This is when the insulin is present but there is insufficient available or there is a delayed secretion of the insulin. Strict dietary management will be required, the timing of meals and insulin is important. Regular consistent exercise is also important. Causes Page 20 Christmas 2005

24 Hints on how to find a responsible breeder Responsible breeders usually spend time in answering buyers' questions, willingly give advice about diet, training, exercise, grooming etc. They breed these dogs because they genuinely admire the breed and want to contribute to its betterment. They allow bitches to recover sufficiently in between litters and do not breed season after season. They usually consider themselves responsible for the whole life of that puppy, keeping in touch with puppy's owner and want to be the first person to know and help if the dog can no longer be kept by the owner. They help prospective owners work out whether a Samoyed would be the best choice for them. They interview the buyer usually asking some or all of the following; Have you owned a dog before? If so, what type? How long did you own it? Are there children in the family? If so, how many and what ages? Are you planning on having more children? Do you own your own home? If not does the landlord allow dogs? Are you planning to stay there? If not are you prepared BEWARE OF BUYING FROM PET SHOPS for extra hassles to find a rental that does allow dogs? Do you have other pets? Do you have a fenced secure area and be willing for the breeder to inspect that this area is suitable? Are you prepared to spend time training this dog so that it will not become a menace? Do you have time to spare to groom this dog? Do you have time to give this dog appropriate exercise? Will the dog have day time human company which this breed just craves? Do you realise the costs involved in owning a dog, i.e. vet care, cost of quality food, boarding, annual registration etc? And also do you realise that you will be taking on the commitment of a living creature that will be dependant on you for rest of it's life? How to locate a responsible breeder. The New Zealand Kennel Club is a good starting point to look for a responsible breeder, either in the magazine publication, website or contact them directly. Area breed clubs are also a good point of contact for information about local breeders. Vet's, groomers, and boarding kennels can also be a source of information. Beware of newspaper classified ad's and internet ad's offering 'fluffy bundles of joy for Xmas' etc. These type of people are only interested in the colour of your money! Questions the owner should be asking the breeder, if the breeder has not discussed these already; Is the breeder's dog a housedog? If not, ask how they provide the human interaction that Samoyeds crave. Ask how they socialise the puppies. Are they able to refer you to other owners of their breeding? Are they able to show you both dam and sire? If not, are they able to provide photos, video etc of the sire. Usually the dam will be able to be seen. Will the puppies be New Zealand Kennel Club registered? Will there be any endorsements registered with the NZKC, i.e. Not to be bred from etc. (The NZKC website lists all endorsements that can be put in place). Ask to view the pedigrees of the dam and sire. Page 24 Christmas 2005

25 Are the breeding stock x- rayed for hip dysphasia? Are they certified free of eye disease? Are they gonioscopy tested? What are the terms if the puppy develops any genetic problem? Do they require 'pet' puppies to be spayed/ neutered? ('Pet' quality puppies should not be deficient, they just probably do not meet breed standard for coat type, head type, pigment, bone structure, eye type etc ands should not be bred from). Ask about their vaccination regime. Also ask what age the puppy will be homed? (Prior to eight weeks is not recommended). BEWARE OF BUYING FROM PET SHOPS AND UN- KNOWLEDGEABLE BREED- ERS AS THEY DO NOT AND WILL NOT OFFER THE FOL- LOW UP SUPPORT THAT IS USUALLY REQUIRED IF A FIRST TIME SAMOYED OWNER AND ESPECIALLY IF A FIRST TIME DOG OWNER. Ask if they are members of a breed club. Ask if they actively show their dogs. Responsible breeders should willingly give the above information and would want all the above discussed before you view any puppy. They will also be happy for you to inspect their property. They will be happy to offer advice and support you and your puppy as you head through a joyous life together! Sleigh courier Page 25

35 Feed Santa's Reindeer Santa's reindeer will be hungry when they get to your house. While Santa's inside eating the cookie and milk you left him, the reindeer will be waiting outside. How about leaving them some reindeer food? Recipe for Reindeer Food 1. 1 cup sugar 2. 1 cup instant oatmeal 3. 1 cup glitter 4. Mix everything together and scatter around outside. (Santa's reindeer are magical, and they love magical reindeer food.) Note: If you live in an area where lots of non-magical creatures like pets or wild animals might get to the reindeer food and eat it, leave out the glitter. Glitter might hurt real animal stomachs and Santa's reindeer will still enjoy the feast without glitter. A good substitute for the glitter would be sprinkles used to decorate cakes and cupcakes.
