1 SLEIGH COURIER -SUMMER 04 The Samoyed Club Incorporated Issue 4 - CHRISTMAS SUMMER 2004 Help Your Pet to be COOL this Summer It's great to enjoy summer with your pet. But it's also the time when they have the greatest risk of injury and heat-related health problems. So here are some tips on keeping things cool this summer. Watch for signs of HEATSTROKE- Rapid panting, hot skin, twitching muscles, a dazed look. Wrap them in a towel soaked with cool, not cold, water. In severe cases, place them in the bathtub. Heatstroke can be fatal. See your vet as soon as possible. NEVER, EVER leave your pet in a PARKED CAR- Not even if you crack the windows or park in the shade. On a day 20º C, the car temperature can rise above 65º C in minutes. It's EXTREMELY dangerous. And the Number One cause of heatstroke. Keep Vaccinations upto-date- This is the time when most pets come in contact with other animals, at parks, campgrounds, etc. Always provide Plenty of Fresh Water- Dogs can only sweat through the pads of their feet and by panting. Evaporation from the wet surfaces of their mouth and nose helps lower body temperature. Stop External Parasites Before They Bite- Fleas, ticks and ear mites thrive in warm, humid environments. See your vet for a preventative program. Watch for Hot Pavement and Beaches- Sensitive paws burn easily. Find a COOL Spot- For indoor pets, keep the air circulating with a child-proof fan or air conditioner. Provide shade for outdoor pets. And a gentle sprinkle from a hose is always appreciated. The Streets Aren't Safe- Don't let your pet roam. Just in case-make sure your pet is licensed. Veterinarians see twice as many fight injuries and bite wounds in summer. And, of course, your pet is no match for a car. The Yard isn't always Safe, Either- Be cautious of pesticides and herbicides. Read the precautions for lawn chemicals carefully and keep pets away from newly treated lawns. If pets come in contact with chemicals, wash their feet, abdomen and chest thoroughly, then contact your vet. Brush your dog - Frequent brushing provides early warning of parasites and skin infections by lifting the coat, permitting a view of the skin below. It's Allergy Season- People sneeze. Pets scratch. Common pet allergies include pollen, grass and weeds. If your pet scratches excessively or chews its paws, take it to the vet for an exam. Watch the Exercise and Diet- Don't encourage exercise during the hottest part of the day. And let them eat less. Overeating can lead to overheating. Not Every Dog Paddles Well- Animals in the water for the first time should be eased in, never thrown or chased in. Don't let them drink from pools, streams or the ocean. And, if they swim, rinse them off. Salt and minerals can damage a dog's coat. Sunburn is No Day at the Beach- It hurts. Shorthaired pets and those with pink skin and white hair are especially susceptible. Limit their exposure. 3 Well it does not seem long since the Easter Bunny was here and now Santa and his Reindeer are nearly on their way. Hopefully you have all been good enough to get something nice from Santa. Samoyeds are known as the Christmas dogs as they have a smile on their face all year round so hopefully you will remember your Sam at Xmas time. My Sams each have a stocking put up for Santa to fill with goodies for them. They love Xmas day. The two latest Club events were successful and most enjoyable. The Open show at Taupo attracted a reasonable entry. It would have been nice to see a few more of the Upper North members with their Sams at this show especially all the new baby puppies. We especially hold the Open show at Taupo to cater for our Upper North members and as I personally don t get up to Auckland that often I look forward to seeing all these members and their Sams at this show. Maybe next year you will make it to our Champ Show and we can catch up then. I hope so. Special thanks goes to the Committee who as usual worked hard to get everything done in time for the show and to make it an enjoyable day. Please remember the Committee is made up of volunteers who have lives of their own and families to look after as well as their own dogs to prepare and show. Getting all the prizes up to Taupo is a major. Just as well Lorraine has a truck and is a conservative packer. Even left her tent pegs at home to make room for the prizes!!! The prizes were top rate. Lorraine had put a lot of effort and thought into getting prizes that you would be pleased to get and able to use. The red paper with the snowflakes and Sleigh Courier -Summer 04 President's Report stars made the prizes stand out nicely against the blue tablecloth made years ago by Paddy Watts. The Samoyed Club is well known for its excellent show prizes and Lorraine is doing a great job of maintaining that reputation. Thanks must go again to Kaye Hammer for helping with handing out the prizes. It is so nice to have people step forward to help. A big thanks must go to all those folks who sponsored classes. Given the Club has a lot of members who do not show their Sams and the membership basically covers the magazine expenses it is important for the shows to be self funding and for the members who do show to help contribute with more than just entries if they can. Anita A did a great job as Show Secretary and Simeon helped with preparing the catalogue. Jenny, our steward, quickly got the show on the road once we had realized no Sams had gone thru in Group. There were no excuses for missing your call even if it did get a bit confusing at one point as to what class we were up to!!! Jenny has offered to steward again next year as she enjoyed herself so much. Well done to the winners BIS Ch Zaminka Back To The Future (Helen Clark) and RBIS Ch Zaminka Still a Kid at Heart (Rob Barzey). A mystery auction, which proved to be most enjoyable, and a good fundraiser followed the show. Thanks to those folks who donated items for the auction and those who were generous in their bidding. There were some very good prizes and few of questionable value. All fund raising helps build up the Club s kitty. The hope is that one day we will have enough money to have judges for our Champ shows from outside Australasia. Just a reminder that donations in lieu of the photos sent to you of your Sams taken at the Champ Show are also a Club Fundraiser and your donations would be greatly appreciated. If you want extra copies please let me know and I will arrange for $5 each. The Committee is also asking for support from members who show their Sams to help tidy up the National show cups. There have been several requests previously to help with tidying up the cups. We need two new cups for the National show and have some that are full and need to be extended / repaired. Thanks to those people who have already offered to help. The Committee wants to have a full set of cups in good order before handing out any cups. The Committee however doesn t want to use Club funds to buy new cups. The Committee has also written to the two other Samoyed Clubs in New Zealand asking they would like to share the responsibility for handing out and maintaining these cups in the future. Now that the National show moves around the 3 main centers (Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch) it makes sense for the other Clubs to be involved with handing out cups for the Samoyed Breed at the National show. The next two events are very much just for fun. The annual snow dog match and the Sammy Walk / Picnic to be held. Hopefully our non showing members will make it to these events which are very casual and friendly and especially arranged for you. Merry Christmas and Happy New year for you and your Sams - Lynne Page 3

4 Well I can t speak for anyone else but wow, what a busy few months I have had. Two weeks in Australia in September for the Samoyed National, trips away for shows and with having children, summer sports. These last few months have flown by. Our Open Show in Taupo was a huge success. Big thanks must go to Lorraine, our Trophy Steward, for the fantastic prizes. A huge job but well done. Bosch was our product sponsor and as always were very generous. We were extremely lucky that the weather was sunny and didn t have to encounter the rain. I had a few exhibitors come up to me after to say thanks as they really enjoyed the show. Also that day we held our Mystery Auction. It was lots of fun with our auctioneer Jenny bringing in the money. Thanks to those of you who donated items to be auctioned. Our next event is the Snow Dog Match on 27 th November held with the Siberian Husky and Secretary s Report Alaskan Malamute clubs. We hold this event every year and it has been a lot of fun in the past. All are welcome and you don t need to be an experienced handler to enter. Entries are taken on the day. Most of our committee will be there so it is a great way to meet everyone and get advice on any issues to do with your Samoyeds. Anita Shugg is busy arranging the next Samoyed Walk and Picnic. We are hoping to hold this middle of January in the Otaki/Levin area. An advert is within this issue. With the hot weather hitting us, Our Open Show in Taupo was a huge success ensure you comb out your Samoyeds. They are a lot cooler and happier with all that dead hair groomed out. Keep an eye out for those pesky fleas. There are lots of products on the market to keep them away but I personally use Frontline or Advantage as it is easy and works. This will be the last issue of the year. Don t forget to renew your subscriptions for next year. Hope you all have a very Merry Xmas. See you all in the New Year. Anita A Wishing all Samoyeds and their Humans a very Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year Anita and The Samhain Sams Kael, Ali and Echo Wait until Santa sticks his butt down our chimney! 5 The Club continues to operate successfully and the membership has increased by 2 to a total of 62. The Open Show held in Taupo was a success and the income exceeded the outgoings by a small amount. Cadbury chocolate bars for sale at $2 each or $40 per box (20 bars) continue to prove popular. If you would like to help with selling a box or would like to buy a few bars or a box please contact Simonne Treasurer s Report MacMillan. Membership subscriptions are due for renewal on 1 January 2005 The Club has several Samoyed Badges for sale. The badges are 30mm by 30mm in size and have a clasp on the back They are $7 each. The Club also has an assortment of Samoyed themed greeting cards for sale. Inside the cards have a Christmas greeting or are blank. They are $7 for 10 or $1 each See pages 14,17 Editor s Report Membership subscriptions are due for renewal on 1 January We hope that you have found lots of value from your membership this year and will renew for the forthcoming year. A membership form for 2005 accompanies this copy of Sleigh Courier. A copy can also be downloaded from the club web site at -Simeon Well It s been a busy time doing this magazine, I can believe Christmas is nearly here. I had my Beautiful baby boy on the 23rd September, he was 8lbs 4oz. I did managed to keep my legs crossed and went on our latest Sam Walk which was only 4 days before I had Wyatt. As you can see from the photo s I was ready to pop. Hope to see you at our next Sam Walk. Thank you to everyone who has help me with the magazine this year. A special thanks to Lauren who checks the magazine for me and I might adds does a very good job and to Simeon who prints the magazine. Wyatt with Meecha The next magazine will be out after the AGM in March so please keep sending me photo s, articles etc for the next issue. Hope you all have a safe and happy holiday. 6 I have not done any re-housing but have helped with a couple of Samoyeds. The 1st person ed, she felt that she did not have enough time for the 5 year old Samoyed. She had Water Ice blocks are good to put in water bowls or to give your dog outside (a new toy) already asked the SPCA to take him (I think it was a male) She told me that the SPCA said 'they would put him down because he was on medication'!she said that he has 'Dry eye' and has to have drops put in his eyes. I know a Saluki that has 'Dry Eye, the owners have No problem putting the odd drops in her eyes! I ed back with several questions and also asked if she had got back to the breeder? (most Breeders like to know where there dogs are and can help re-house) I didn't hear back from this lady, so hopefully the breeder did manage to sort something out. Sam Care Report up by the Dog Ranger in Levin, nicely groomed, no tags, but when the owner hadn't come for her 24 hours later, a friend telephoned me, to see if I knew anybody in Levin with Samoyeds. I telephoned several people, who in turn telephoned other people they knew had a Samoyed. With the help of others, we managed to find out that the owner was on holiday overseas and who was suppose to be looking after her. So for any lost Samoyeds please telephone or . The grape vine works very well in putting dog and owner back together. With the warmer weather coming, please remember your dog - cool water to drink and cool place to sleep. Water Ice blocks are good to put in water bowls or to give your dog outside (a new toy!) A well groomed coat is a cool coat - clipping the coat will not make the dog cooler but you will need to cut or tease out any mats. Do not leave your Samoyed in a car over Summer unless you can leave several windows down and park in the Shade. You will need to check the temperature in the car after 5 or 10 minutes. The car can heat up very fast!!! There have been several dead dogs and babies to prove this point, we don't need to learn of any more! Regards Anita Shugg The next Samoyed was picked On behalf of the committee, I would like to thank all the members that have sent me the Science Diet Bar codes. I am getting close to the 40 Bar codes that we need to get the sponsorship like last year (where we were able to give every exhibitor something ) Please do send me more Bar Codes. I will carry on collecting them (even when I have the 40) for the following year. Thank You Anita Shugg Sleigh Courier -Summer 04 Page 6

14 Deceased dog "Are you sure?" the distraught woman asked. "He was a great family pet. Isn't there anything else you can do?" The vet paused for a moment and said, "There is one more thing we can do." He left the room for a moment and came back carrying a large cage with a cat in it. The vet opened the cage door and the cat walked over to the dog. The cat sniffed the dog from head to toe and walked back to the cage. "Well, that confirms it," the vet announced, "your dog is dead." Satisfied that the vet had done everything he possibly could, the woman sighed, "How much do I owe you?" "That will be $330," the vet replied. "I don't believe it!", screamed the woman. "What did you do that cost $330?" "Well," the vet replied, "it's $30 for the office visit and $300 for the cat scan." Christmas Get your Samoyed Christmas cards now! 15 Delightful Dog Card Make a great dog card for Xmas Supplies needed: Card stock or construction paper Scissors Markers or crayons Googly eyes and glue (optional) To start making a square, fold the corner of a piece of paper over. To finish making the square, cut off the small rectangle, forming a square (which is already folded into a triangle). Fold over two triangles (to make the dog's ears). Put a face on your dog. Gluing on googly eyes gives the dog a cute look. You can write messages under the ears and on the inside of your new card. Sleigh Courier -Summer 04 Page 15

16 This is what my dog Knows When food is left on the table or counter it is really meant for you, if it wasn't they would have buried it in the backyard. Mice are little monsters that must be destroyed at all cost if you can catch them! Why do you need to drink out of a bowl when you have fresh cold water in the toilet? When getting ready to go for a ride and your human forgets something back in the house, it is fun to jump on the door handle and lock the doors. The look on their face is priceless! - Don't you wish you could read human's minds, poor pitiful things. Fun Dog Dictionary Understanding the Language of our pups! LEASH: A strap which attaches to your collar, enabling you to lead your human where you want him/ her to go. DOG BED: Any soft, clean surface, such as the white bedspread in the guest room or the newly upholstered couch in the living room. DROOL: is what you do when any human has food and you don't. To do this properly you must sit as close as you can and look sad. Let the drool fall to the floor, or better yet, on their laps! SNIFF: A social custom to use when you greet other dogs. Place your nose as close as you can to the other dog's rear end and inhale deeply, repeat several times, or until your human makes you stop. LOVE: is a feeling of intense affection, given freely and without restriction. The best way you can show your love is to wag your tail. If you're lucky, a human will love you in return. 17 Things We Can Learn from a Dog Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joy ride. Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure ecstasy. When loved ones come home, always run to greet them. When it's in your best interest, always practise obedience. Let others know when they've invaded your territory. Take naps and always stretch before rising. Run, romp, and play daily. Eat with gusto and enthusiasm. Be loyal. Never pretend to be something you're not. If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it. When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by and nuzzle them gently. Delight in the simple joy of a long walk. Thrive on attention and let people touch you. Avoid biting when a simple growl will do. On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree. When you are happy, dance around and wag your entire body. No matter how often you are criticized, don't buy into the guilt thing and pout. Run right back and make friends.
