1 THUNDERWORD Volume 7 Issue 8 August 2018 The Nazareth Day Car Show was a great success. Everyone was so busy, we did not get time to take pictures of the field, but we had some great cars there, so here is a small sample of the variety: okay, we did sponsor it! 2 President s Message Club Officers Vince Luppino President Luppinov@verizon.net Tom Hollenbach Vice-President spokes5662@gmail.com Barbara Melnyk Secretary Walter Fries Jr. Treasurer wfriesjr@aol.com Happy August LVTC Members! The Car Show season is almost over and it has certainly been a wet one. Our own Nazareth Day Car Show was almost rained out and the drops did make the attendees anxious enough that the show cleared the field by 3:00 pm. It was a great team effort this year with some last minutes changes, but the show went well and I will let Walt Fries crunch the numbers and report it to the members at the upcoming meeting. Due to some work related issues, I needed to postpone the President s Picnic.I will announce a date at a later time. In the fall, we normally start accepting nominations for club officers and Board Members. After six years as Club President, I will be stepping out of the position at the end of this term, so the Club will need someone to take over. We have a good team and a active Board of Directors, so do not hesitate to step into the position. Also, due to a significant change in work, I will be resigning as a co-editor of the THUNDERWORD. This is a good move as you will most likely receive your newsletter in a more timely manner! Recently I had the opportunity to attend the VTCI International Convention in Tulsa, Oklahoma. While the weather was very hot, the event was very good and well attended. The VTCI has some great people running it and the members were very welcoming. Only Troy Miller and Myself attended from our club, but you would have though we were old acquaintances with the hospitality we experienced. In the near future, we need to reach out to the surrounding VTCI members and invite them to visit our club. Well, enough from me, I hope everyone is doing well and I hope to see you soon at an upcoming Car Show or Event! Best Regards, Vince Newsletter Editors Tom Hollenbach spokes5662@gmail.com Vince Luppino Luppinov@verizon.net Board of Director s Message The Board would like to thank the following Club members who volunteered their time to help with the Nazareth Day Car Show: Walt & Sandi, Tom & Claudia, Jerry & Ruth, Mike and Barb, Dan & Anna, Bill, Bruce & Catharine, Stephen, Lynne & Harry, Alan, Troy, Mick & Danielle, Liz, Dwight & Marsha, Tom & Sue, Katie and Vince. The show was a success and could not have been done without your help! You are all Hired for next year, so you ll Come back now, you hear! 6 How to Make Trail Mix The best part is you can assemble it with pretty much any ingredients you like! I load mine with superfood, protein-packed, heart-and brain-healthy nuts. I also add a bit of dried fruit, chocolate, and typically one more goodie to add flavor and texture and keep things interesting. I think that the proportions are important (more of the healthy stuff, less of the goodies), but again, you can tweak any ratios to your liking. Ingredients in Healthy Trail Mix WALNUTS & PECANS ~ Walnuts and pecans are nutrient-dense nuts that promote both brain health and heart health. They re high in omega fatty acids, other healthy fats, protein, vitamins, and minerals, and they re also a good source of antioxidants and fiber. They re a great addition to trail mix either raw or lightly toasted in the oven. ALMONDS ~ I like adding dry-roasted, lightly salted almonds to my trail mix as well. The purists will tell you to use raw almonds instead, and you certainly can and should if that s your preference! But (call me bad) I like just a little bit of saltiness in my trail mix. Using salted almonds provides the perfect amount without going overboard. CASHEWS ~ Another healthy nut with great flavor and texture, I prefer using roasted, unsalted cashews in my trail mix. Just make sure any roasted nuts you use cashews or almonds are dry-roasted rather than roasted in oil. DRIED FRUIT ~ For the healthiest option, try to stick with unsweetened, unsulphured dried fruit. If using dried cranberries (which clearly need to be sweetened), you can sometimes find them sweetened with apple juice instead of sugar. Raisins are always a classic, or dried mango or pineapple will give your trail mix a tropical twist, and banana chips are even fun. My family loves dried tart cherries in our trail mix. CHOCOLATE ~ Chocolate as an ingredient in a Healthy Trail Mix? Of course! Haven t you heard that dark chocolate actually has healthy benefits? And just a little bit goes a long way in adding sweetness and creaminess to each bite of trail mix. I recommend using good quality semi-sweet chocolate chips. (Of course, if you re feeling a bit naughty, you can add mini peanut butter cups or M&Ms instead of dark chocolate. EXTRA GOODIES ~ Here s where you get to have some fun with yummy add-ins! Certain addins, such as seeds (pumpkin seeds or sunflower seeds), contribute extra nutrition. Other addins, such as popcorn or pretzels or cereal, simply contribute varied texture and flavor. I chose unsweetened coconut flakes as an add-in for this batch of trail mix. And that s it! The recipe is as simple as measuring into everything into a bowl, giving it a good stir to combine, and then storing in an airtight container (such as a big tub, a big jar, or small individual bags for portable snacks). Trail mix will keep for at least a month, but I doubt it lasts that long! Hopefully this Healthy Trail Mix will give y all a new snack idea for your arsenal while saving you from the temptations of chips and leftover jellybeans. Enjoy!
7 TOP CAR SEAT SAFETY TIPS Making sure to buckle up on every car ride, whether it s a short trip to the store or a long distance trip, it is the most important thing a family can do to stay safe. Below are a few tips to make buckling up a part of life. Teach children the importance of car seats and using seat belts, whether they re riding with you or not. If you can instill this important habit at an early age, they will be more likely to buckle up when they are older and every time they are in a car. Lead by example! When you wear your seat-belt, your kids will wear their seat-belt. Kids want to be like adults, so be a good example and buckle up for every car ride. Inch Test. Once you have installed your car seat, give it a good tug at the base where the seat belt goes through the base. A properly installed car seat should not move more than an inch side-to-side or front-toback. Make sure to check your car seat manual for additional information. Pinch Test. Once you have safely secured your child in their car seat, making sure the harness is tightly buckled and coming through the correct slots of the seat. With the chest clip placed at armpit level of your child, pinch the strap at your child s shoulder. You should not be able to pinch any excess webbing, if you can you will need to tighten the strap! For both rear-facing and forward-facing car seats, make sure to use the car s seat belt or LATCH system to lock the car seat in place. Don t use both at the same time. Vehicles built after 2002 will have a LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) System. For instructions and help on installing a car seat with seat belts in vehicles built before 2002 click here.
