This year has been a busy one for our club with 2015 looking even better. There are still many committees left to be filled for this next year. Hunt Test, Meet the Breed, Education Committee and still positions on the Specialty for 2015 and I am sorry that our Monroe booth fund raiser did not work out. The Whidbey Island club would not allow us to have a booth, as they already had two photography vendors and they thought it would be a conflict. So, if anyone can think of another idea for a fund raiser, please let me know. I am trying to contact the Coeur d Alene (Idaho) show and see if they would let me do a Therapy Dog, CGC, and Community Canine Good Citizen tests there. We support the Spokane Show two days before and would possibly have enough club members present to help me with this. I cannot charge more for the Therapy Dog Test, but can charge for the CGC and CGCA tests. So, that is a thought. We will also be having the Hunt test this spring. Melissa Newman is chairperson and I will be hunt test secretary. Lisa Nielsen has offered to do hospitality. We will need many workers there, so even if you do not do this activity, please come out and help out. This brings me to my next subject. To be a viable club we need to grow and do new things. This takes all the membership to help on these projects. It is hard for our club, since we are spread out over two states; but we can do it. If everyone just helped out on one or two committees it would wonderful. Too often, it is just a couple of people doing everything. Remember, if you sign up for a committee, carry through with it. I know things happen in life and sometimes we have to bow out of a promise, and that is understandable. But, we really need to pull together and make this everyone s job not just a few. We all want to show our dogs and take part in the activities. If you are not currently active in an event, what a great time to come and help and let the people who are active relax and enjoy it. I have also found that a number of people who do come and watch what is going on, soon become interested in maybe trying their hand and having another avenue to compete with their dogs. We are very lucky to now have so many different events to work in. When I started out in dogs in the 70 s we only had obedience, conformation and field trials. Think about what you can do and come out and have some fun. Louise

5 Hospice and Therapy Dogs by Louise Day Therapy dogs play in role with hospice in much the same way that they do in visiting a care center. Some of the differences are that I as a trainer and handler/owner of a hospice dog must go through the background check and the training that a regular hospice volunteer must go through. That involves 20 hours of training and a health screening as well as the background and reference checks. The visits of a hospice dog are done on a one on one basis with the hospice patient. It can be just the normal petting and talking to the dog and patient. At no time do you allow the patient to hold the lead or walk alone with the dog but you can stroll either outside or in the halls of the care center or hospital. In this setting the hospice patient forms a special bond with the dog and looks forward to your visits. When doing hospice with your dog you are committed until the patient dies or are released from hospice. The family can also form a special bond with the hospice dog. On one visit the hospice patient fell asleep and Topaz released herself from her duties with the patient and went over to the daughter and laid her head in the daughters lap. The daughter asked why Topaz did that and I explained that Topaz felt she needed some special attention that day. After a few minutes of petting and talking to Topaz the daughter broke down and hugged and cried into Topaz s for about 20 minutes. Topaz stood and nuzzled the daughter as if telling her it was okay and to cry. After that visit the daughter always spent special time with the daughter until her dad passed away a month later. The world is a small place and we connect to each other in many ways. Topaz had taken a basic obedience class with the daughter and her dog. On my last visit to the Dad when I walked into the room the patient had another visitor it was a former co-worker that I had worked with for about 5 years. It is a small world. Topaz has also shown the ability to know when a patient is dying. She has on 4 different occasions taken me into a room with a hospice patient not assigned to her. The nurses at the Center are amazed at this instinct she has. Topaz also visits the hospice center and spends time with the RN s and social workers to help them when they lose a patient. It is amazing to watch the inter action between dog and people in the grief process. With all of this, I need to take care of Topaz and give her time to get over losing a hospice patient. She lost two special men in one week and could not understand why I was not taking her to those rooms. I have since realized that she needs time also between losing a patient and getting a new one assigned. After several weeks she has started to search out other hospice patients. We visit both care centers and hospices with Topaz. In the care center she will see around 50 patients in an hour, so many days the time is brief or if the patient is asleep they do not see Topaz that week. Topaz has learned which patients need more time on our visits and will not let me leave until she is sure they are feeling better. The ones who are feeling well she will say hi and let them pet her and hug her and then she tells me it is time to move on. We were so fortunate during the weekend of the PSESC Specialty that Louise held Therapy Dog and Canine Good Citizen set of tests. 8 dogs passed their Therapy Dog Testing, and 10 passed the CGC and CGCA testing. 6 Member News and Brags From Kathy Rodriguez: What a great year Melissa Newman and I have been having with our puppy "Latte" (Wind Dancer's Barista of Set'r Ridge). Latte is a Hadji granddaughter out of Pantera Ch Set'r Ridge's Solid Gold Dream by Ezekiel Ch Set'r Ridge's Royal Heir. From Latte's first step on the show grounds, she was in love with dog shows. Running around in circles and getting to eat and being given toys to kill, well what could be better? Latte's first show at Gold Country she was Best Puppy and got a Group 3 in the Puppy Group. And more important lots of nice compliments from fellow breeders on how much they liked this little fire cracker with the hot red ears. So, next up was Willamette Valley ESF where she was Reserve Winners Bitch. Then at our specialty Latte was Best in Sweeps under the esteemed Irish Setter judge, the handsome Craig Cooper. Then we went to the National, where Latte won third in her Futurity class and then she and Melissa geared up and Latte went Winners Bitch and on to Best of Winners! It was one of those things you dream about. From Lisa Neilsen: I would like to mention that we had a great time at the PSESC supported entry in Spokane over Memorial Day weekend. We had a great turnout for the show. Majors in dogs both days, and a fun gathering at the ENGLISH SETTER BREWING COMPANY. Please join us in 2015 for 4 days of shows. 7 From Melissa Newman: In addition to the great news about Latte, during the testing held over the weekend of the Specialty, Zarda passed her Therapy Dog Title as well as her CGC. Chloe, Ch Set r Ridge s Believe in Dreams finished her Championship in August, and got her health clearances. She is an OFA Good, Elbows Clear & BAER Clear. Maverick, Ch Set r Ridge s National Legacy finished his Championship with all majors. He also got his health clearances, and is OFA Excellent, Elbows Clear & Baer Clear. Zarda Chloe Maverick From Louise Day: What a year for Set-Point Setters! In April, Carter, Ch Set-Point Dream Catch JH finished his Championship, as did Hailley, Ch Set-Point A Dream Come True CGC. Carter Hailley Topaz, GCh Setr Ridge Highlight THDA completed her requirements for her THDA (Therapy Dog Advanced) from AKC. Please see the article on her work with Louise. What an amazing girl! Hayden, Set-Point Dreaming in Chocolate won his major at Spokane, a supported entry show. Owen, Ch Set-Point Once Upon A Dream JH CGC finished his JH in May, plus added extra passes to his accomplishments. Topaz Hayden Owen

8 From Sherri Doratti: A whirlwind summer and fall for us at Desert ES! Nick, MBIS/BISS Br Am GCh/Can GCh Legends What Women Want, retired after being shown for a couple of years at the Winnipeg Shows, on the weekend of the ESCC National. He came back to BC with Lace Can Ch Desert s Xtra Valentines Gift CGCA CGN following those shows, and we started working him in the field. I am so happy to say that he earned his first JH pass in California! Lace, at the PSESC weekend of shows, won a BW major and followed it up with a Best Bred By in Show, as well as passed her CGCA and Therapy Dog Test. At the hunt test in California, she also earned her second JH pass. I absolutely love working these dogs in the field, even with my limited experience and not great handling skills, it is truly a joy to see their face and watch them work. Shortly Lace will be certified for Pet Visitation through St John s Ambulance in Canada, and we are looking forward to starting her over the winter.
