1 Editor s Note In this Bulletin, we catch up on the main results of LRKC events in 2014, hear about some of our club members news, our Chairman has something to chirp about, get some valuable veterinary advice, and.. we get to meet our Championship Show judge! Also take note of the advert for the book written by Dr Kurt de Cramer. Here she is Mrs Siv Sandø from Norway, our international judge for the LRKC Championship Show on 20 September 2014, and she writes: My name is Siv Sandø, I was born in 1960, mother of two boys and soon grandmother of two girls. I have been owned by Labradors since 1975, and have never been without them after that. My first dogs were just pets, but of good breeding and brought me into the active doglife forever. My first showdog was a male born in 1979, Ch Narjanas Adam (Ch Licithas Blizzard/Ch Hrovans Hannah), after him came a couple of bitches, first and foremost my wonderful Charway Lacemaker (Ch Lindall Mastercraft/Charway Sally Brown). Everything I have today I owe her. Not only was she a beautiful Labrador, she was a good brood with the most lovely temperament. Most important, she was the reason for my friendship with her breeder, Janice Prithchard. I can not express how I cherish the contact with her and the Charway dogs. I got some dogs from her through the years, the last one just a few weeks before her untimely death. I have breed Labradors since 1985, on a limited basis under the prefix Eyecatching together with my husband. I show regularly at dog shows, and also work my dogs. I find the working side of our breed so very important and rewarding. Up to now I have breed 10 champions, and owned 7 champions not born here. Besides the active life with my dogs, I organize dog shows, handling classes and do club work. I am the President of the Norwegian Kennel Club with its members- so no worries to what to do in my free time. I work full time as well. Besides the Labradors we have had Sussex Spaniels, Pointers, French Bulldogs and Pugs. I have judged since 2000, and have had the opportunity to see Labradors in many parts of the world. The highlight must have been when I judged Potomac in USA, the world s biggest speciality all breeds. I am now authorized judge for FCI groups 7 and 8, and the Norwegian national breeds. I am very happy to have been invited to South Africa, and to see your dogs, and experience the people and country. I look so much forward to meet you all! Although people give generously to this cause, the coffers do have a limitation as some people are not in a financial position to assist with the true costs of this operation and in times such as these, we have to rely on donations from members and general public. We therefore make a plea to all those members to dig deep into their pockets no matter how big or small to assist this worthy cause. 2 Chairman s Chirp It may be an old chirp, but now more important than ever promotion of our breed, our club and all Labrador Retriever activities. At a recent meeting of the Districts of Gauteng and Surrounds Provincial Council (DOGSPC), councillors were all in agreement that we cannot depend on KUSA to promote all breeds and their associated activities, the specialist dog clubs will have to do this themselves. With significantly declining numbers in dogdom as we know it, the members of the LRKC, as custodians of Labrador Retrievers in South Africa, will have to take action to turn the tide in favour of our own breed. We need a strong and active specialist breed club for our dogs and breeders to be noticed not only in our own country, but also in the international Labrador Retriever community. Our club has a lot of potential to grow. If one simply considers the number of Labrador Retriever puppies registered annually with KUSA, there must be a lot of Labrador enthusiasts out there who are not part of our club. As the LRKC we must ask ourselves why this is so we should be one of the largest and most active specialist clubs in the country, yet we are not. In addition to considering the size of our club, activities in our breed are also not nearly as visible as those seen for many other (less popular) breeds. One often observes large numbers of German Shepherds, Rottweilers or Dobermanns while driving past a sports field, not to mention the numbers in some of the terrier breeds. One could argue that these breeds need much more training than Labradors (I say that tongue in cheek!) and that our events happen out there in the field, however, what those specialist breed clubs also achieved over the years here in South Africa is better public awareness, better understanding of temperament, better focus on health issues in their breeds and very knowledgable breeders. They managed to raise better awareness and understanding of breed trade marks and type amongst those all-rounder judges(sic) who mostly judge our dogs. Moreover, South African breeders of most of these dog breeds have an excellent standing in the international community if one considers the numbers of dogs exported to countries all over the world. I believe with our breed we have the potential to be at the top of the leader board in every respect. To this end, I would like to urge our club members to get more involved in our club activities, respond to issues via the website and make suggestions to the Committee we value your input. Entries for our Field Trials were much higher in 2014 than recent years which is already a very positive sign, but entries for our Open Shows were down this year. With this in mind, I want to set a target for our members: ENTER ONE HUNDRED LABRADOR RETRIEVERS FOR OUR CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW ON 20 SEP 2014! In addition, to boost membership and make the LRKC more visible, the Committee plans to host a LABRADOR RETRIEVER DAY ON 22 NOVEMBER More details will follow, but please diarise this date as well. We no longer only want to see those stunning dogs on Facebook living elsewhere in the world we want them here too. We should be part of the Labrador Retriever Universe, not just some distant little club at the tip of Africa. We need a large genetic pool to ensure our breed stays healthy and above all, true to breed type and temperament. We want breeders all over the world to care about what they export to South Africa and we want our own breeders to be able to make the right choices for the right reasons when it comes to selection of dogs for breeding, showing and work. CHIRP CHIRP! Renier MEMBERSHIP We now have 200 club members (of which 27 are honorary life members). WELCOME TO THE FOLLOWING NEW MEMBERS WHO JOINED THE CLUB SINCE JANUARY 2014: NEW LRKC MEMBER Mr Tony Wynne Mrs Marie Wynne Mrs Carina Kriek Mrs Thania Rowan AREA OF RESIDENCE Pretoria Pretoria Tweeling, Free State Mooinooi, North West The best way to introduce yourself, meet fellow Labrador enthusiasts and become part of the Labrador Retriever Kennel, is to come to our events. The upcoming Championship Show on 20 September 2014 is an ideal opportunity. It is also a good idea to contact one of the committee members or make an appointment with one of the prominent breeders as listed on the LRKC website ( or drop us a note via the LRKC forum (see the website). We also plan a Labrador Retriever Day on 22 November 2014 which promises to be a lot of fun, Labrador activities, and a chance to meet fellow LRKC members. Page 2 of 8

7 MEDICAL FORUM Spirocerca lupi The silent killer WHAT IS SPIROCERCOSIS? Spirocerca lupi is a potentially lethal parasitic worm that lives in nodules within the oesophagus of dogs. The worms can survive in these nodules for up to 2 years, laying eggs through a small opening in the nodule which are swallowed and passed out in the faeces. Dung beetles ingest Spirocerca eggs present in the faeces and the immature larvae hatch inside the dung beetle. Dogs are infected when they eat the infected dung beetles. The dung beetles usually associated with Spirocerca infections are only approximately 6 mm in length and are not the large, conspicuous dung beetles we are familiar with. Once the beetle has been ingested by a dog, the larvae emerge in the stomach of the dog. The larvae burrow through the stomach wall, causing intense discomfort and enter blood vessels around the stomach. The larvae migrate upstream within the walls of the blood vessels until they reach the large artery which leaves the heart, known as the aorta. The larvae live within the wall of the aorta for a period of a few months, maturing into young adults and causing a weakening of the aortic wall, otherwise known as an aneurysm. The young adult worms then migrate directly to the oesophagus, which lies in close proximity to the aorta. The worms have also been known to migrate to other locations in the body, including the spinal cord. Once inside the oesophagus, the worms form nodules in the oesophageal wall, mating, laying eggs and starting the life cycle over again. HOW WILL I KNOW IF MY DOG HAS SPIROCERCOSIS? Symptoms of spirocercosis are non-specific and are caused by the migration of larvae through the body as well as the space-occupying nodules in the oesophagus. Symptoms include retching, vomiting, weight loss and difficulty in swallowing. The oesophageal nodules often become cancerous in the late stages of the disease. In rare instances, abnormal migration of Spirocerca lupi to the spinal cord can result in lameness or neurological disorders. Thickening of the forelimb bones has also been documented in the late, cancerous stages of the disease. Sudden deaths may occur and are associated with rupture of the aortic aneurysms caused by the young adult worms. Since the damage to the aortic wall is permanent, rupture of an aneurysm may still occur even after the worms have been eradicated from the body, although this is fairly rare. Research has shown that most aortic ruptures occur early on in the migratory phase of the infection.spirocerca lupi is often called the silent killer as sudden deaths may occur with no outward signs of ill health. HOW DO I PREVENT MY DOG FROM CONTRACTING SPIROCERCOSIS? Monthly Advocate treatments in dogs not affected by spirocercosis will prevent infection with this deadly parasite, as well as provide all the other benefits of Advocate, including the prevention and treatment of mange mites, ear mites, fleas, lice and various stages of intestinal roundworms. Daily removal and disposal of dog faeces from your garden is also important to limit potential exposure to Spirocerca. Ask your veterinarian about Advocate. Reference: Ettinger SJ, Feldman EC. Textbook of veterinary internal medicine. 6th ed. St. Louis (MO): Elsevier Saunders; p Linda Bowen from SAGA writes: We are once again appealing to you to support our fund raising events: We have been given a stand at the Bike, Boat and Outdoor Lifestyle Show to be held at the Nasrec Expo Centre, Friday 8 th Sunday 10 th August. The Spirocerca worm has a complex life cycle, involving definitive (final), intermediate and paratenic hosts. Paratenic hosts are hosts within which no further development of the parasite takes place. The Spirocerca worm has to infect a specific host in order to complete its life cycle. The definitive or final host is the dog and the intermediate host is the dung beetle (coprophagous beetles). Paratenic hosts, which may ingest infected dung beetles and in turn harbour the infective larvae, include frogs, lizards, birds and small mammals such as rats and mice. In order for the dog to be infected via this route, the entire paratenic host would have to be eaten and thoroughly digested to allow the release of the infective larvae. HOW DO YOU TREAT A DOG THAT HAS SPIROCERCOSIS? Treatment is often difficult and complex. Treatment is aimed at killing the migrating, immature phases of the parasite as well as the adult worms living inside the oesophageal nodules. Unfortunately there is no treatment for aortic aneurysms or cancerous nodules, which usually spread very quickly to the lungs. Up until recently, accepted treatment has involved a series of injections every 7 to 10 days until all nodules have resolved. Bayer has developed Advocate, an innovative spot-on formulation which is the only product registered for the prevention and treatment of spirocercosis in dogs. Treatment of confirmed cases of spirocercosis is a simple weekly application of Advocate to the back of the neck until complete resolution of the nodules in the oesophagus. Treatment of infected dogs should be closely monitored by the Veterinarian throughout the treatment period. Page 7 of 8
