Editor s Note: In this Bulletin, we publish the results of the recent LRKC Championship Field Trials, introduce our upcoming breed show judges, report back on our representation at the Groenvoer Country Market and consider the rare but awful effects of plant poisoning. We hope you find this Bulletin interesting and informative. The 45 th Annual Field Trials of the LRKC The LRKC annual Field Trial was, as always, held in Val (Standerton District) from April 2015, hosted on the wonderful farms of Croggie Armitage, Deon Horn and Nico Bierman (excellent supporters of the Club to whom we are truly indebted) and drawing a good number of entries. We give big thanks to our generous sponsors, MSD and AFGRI (Jock) - we could not have done it without your ongoing support! A fabulous time was had by all, despite the cold weather! Kobus le Roux writes, Dear LRKC Field Trial Committee, thank you for the fantastic time and experience at Val. Your Committee and Team of willing helpers ensured the weekend was yet again a resounding success!!! Thank you Kobus for these kind words. A very special word of thanks must also be made to Gerhard and Mercia van Tonder for housing our pigeons AND to Kevin Pott for all the hard work he has put in preparing the trophies and with the general Field Trial arrangements over the last year. Thank you so much for your effort and support. And a HUGE thank to Tony Wynne for stepping in when we had technical difficulties during prize giving. I close in thanking our entire Committee: Jane & Kevin Pott, Renier Jansen Van Vuuren, Gerhard and Mercia Van Tonder, Dwayne Malcolm, Genevieve Alberts, Alan Kloeck and Francois Van Rooyen for all their hard work, support and commitment through 2015; with a very special word of thanks to Marie and Tony Wynne for all their support and help when Mercia and Gerhard had to rush back home due to an emergency at home on the second day. All this extra effort all of you put in made our event a great success! A committee s job is relatively thankless, so I really appreciate the time and effort put in by the regulars helping our Club. Getting to Know our Judges Audrey Hauptfleisch will be judging our Second Open Show of the year being held on the 27 th of June at Goldfields Show Grounds. Not only is Audrey a Championship level judge in four groups but is also well known to us as a senior marketing executive at Royal Canin, a loyal sponsor of many of the LRKC events. Audrey was born and bred in Edinburgh, Scotland, married a South African and immigrated to South Africa in Soon after settling in South Africa, she became bitten by the dog bug and says she has never looked back. She currently serves on the Northern Province Judges Training Committee, which assists in training aspirant judges, is Vice Chairlady of the Beagle Association as well as Vice President of the following clubs Nördlicher Verein für Deutsche Hunde Rassen, Jakaranda All Breeds, Pretoria All Breeds, Great Dane and Sporting Dogs. For the past 25 years, Audrey has owned, exhibited and bred Beagles and Saint Bernards along with her daughter Kirsty, with great success, under the Affixes of Morninghunt and Hunterstryst. She also handles Skye Terriers, Italian Spinones, Whippets, Dachshunds, Basenji s, and of course Beagles and Saint Bernards. When Audrey is not representing Royal Canin at various dog events or handling her beloved Beagles, she likes to immerse herself in wildlife photography, spending many happy hours in the Kruger National Park. Richard Edwards of Lasgarn Kennels (UK) has kindly agreed to judge the 48 th Championship Show of the LRKC on the 19 th of September For most of our show community, Richard Edwards does not need any introduction. He has a long, successful history in breeding outstanding quality Labradors and has become well known across the globe for being a highly respected, Labrador specialist judge. This is Richard s story My parents owned and showed dogs before I was born, my Father bought my Mother an English Springer Spaniel in the 1930 s. I always liked the dogs as I was growing up. We had Cockers and some Terriers and then, in the early 1960 s my Father bought in a yellow Lab from Mrs Williams (Nokeener) and I was immediately hooked. She was not a show specimen but she had that brilliant Lab temperament, was easily trained and took to following me everywhere. I have loved Labs ever since, absolutely certain that they are the best breed of dog one could ever own. Page 6 of 14

In partnership with my Father, we started to show Labs under our prefix Lasgarn in about 1965 but it was a while before we got very far which was a good thing really because we were able to appreciate success when the big wins started to come along. In 1971, knowing that Mrs. Williams had mated a very wellbred bitch to Ch. Sandylands Mark, I asked if I could buy a male puppy from the litter but she had made up her mind to keep a dog herself and did not want to sell me a male. I went to see the litter anyway and there looking up at us was a superb yellow bitch quite stunning. I said to my wife she will never sell us that little yellow bitch because it was obvious even to a comparative novice that she was far and away the pick. Cis Williams let me have her for the princely sum of 21 guineas and by the time she was 10 months old she started to win nationally and we made her up very easily as Sh. Ch. Nokeener May Blossom of Lasgarn. Over the next twenty years we made up five UK champions and had other C.C. and R.C.C winners. Their breeding was mainly Sandylands-Nokeener. Cis Williams was really my mentor and Gwen Broadley (Sandylands) and Bridget Docking (Ballyduff) were also very kind when they realised I was seriously interested in the breed. I started judging in 1972 and first awarded C.C s in 1978 and I have since judged at championship show level for The Labrador Retriever Club (Britain), The Labrador Retriever Club of Wales, Northumberland and Durham Labrador Club, The Yellow Labrador Club, Kent Surrey and Sussex Lab Club, Midland Counties Labrador Retriever Club, National Gundog Association, Scottish Kennel Club and a number of general Championship shows. I judged Labs at Crufts in I have judged abroad regularly in the past, including Canada, USA, Australia, New Zealand, Holland, Denmark, Italy, Sweden, Germany, Switzerland, France, Finland, Hungary and Republic of Ireland. Although I have become less active in showing and judging of late, I have always been interested in the history of the breed. A group of us members of the committee of the Labrador Retriever Club were asked to compile a history of the breed and the club to celebrate its 75 th anniversary in It was well received. Later, I realised that I had a huge amount of information that I had to exclude from that book due to lack of space, so I wrote it up as The Show Labrador Retriever in Great Britain and Northern Ireland in two volumes. Later I wrote the history of the Sandylands Kennel and published it privately and Erica Jayes allowed me to use many of the private Sandylands photographs which had never been published before. I have also done a lot of research into the origins and the early days of the breed, a lot of it from original sources never before used, with the idea of publishing it in 2016 which will be the 100 year anniversary of the foundation of the (British) Labrador Retriever Club. I really hope to complete it as, in this way, I feel I am putting something back into a breed that has brought me so much pleasure. Richard Edwards Ed: Mr Edwards has agreed to give us a breed talk and presentation following the Championship Show. Details will follow closer to the time. 8 The LRKC was invited by Groenvoer Animal Feeds to show case our wonderful breed at their Mother s Day Country Market on the 2 nd of May. As a precursor to the event, Renier was interviewed on 93.8 Mix FM, specifically to talk about the Groenvoer event, the LRKC and Labradors in general. The market display was a great success and a lovely morning was had by all! The event commenced with a talk on Labradors by our Chairman, an obedience and canine good citizen exhibition kindly conducted by some of the Labradorowning handlers from the McKaynine Training Centre. The display included heel work, recalls, a sendaway and emergency stop demonstration, object retrievals and scent discrimination. This was followed by a field trial demonstration by Kevin and Jane Pott which included a blind retrieve, retrieval of a Woolworths chicken to demonstrate their soft mouths and discipline and the pièce de résistance retrieval of a live pigeon in a stocking that was returned completely unharmed and surprisingly relaxed! Thank you to the team from McKaynine Training Centre and to Kevin and Jane Pott for giving the audience a glimpse of just how versatile and trainable our dogs are. A special thank you to our Members who supported the event along with their Labs and to Groenvoer for inviting us. As a result, we had a super collection of dogs on display for the market visitors who were able to gain much insight into the breed, it was a lovely opportunity to boost the Club s profile and all in all, the event was a great success! (Vanessa Muller, White River) Page 8 of 14 ~ In Loving Memory of Ailsacraig Pearly Pebbles (10 September March 2015) ~ Pebbles was fine and full of life on the Saturday morning playing with the hosepipe, jumping in and out of the pool, rolling in the grass and doing all the things she loved best. On Saturday afternoon she started limping on her right hind leg. We thought she had strained something from all the activity. I gave her Petcam the limp worsened on Sunday and our vet, Dr Harman, thought it was a cruciate ligament problem and prescribed Onsior for her. At this stage she was still eating all her food. The pain improved with the painkillers and on

Monday evening she still ate all her food. However, by 11pm she started vomiting and experiencing diarrhoea and didn t stop. She was admitted to the veterinary hospital on Tuesday morning and immediately put on a drip and treated for what looked like a stomach irritation caused by too many painkillers. She stayed on the drip and was stable on Wednesday morning but then deteriorated rapidly thereafter. She was x-rayed on Thursday morning and from the radiographs it looked like she was riddled with cancer from her liver and kidneys into her lungs. Dr Harman called us to say that there was nothing they could do and that we would have to let her go. We dropped everything and rushed to Casterbridge but it was too late when they picked her up off the x-ray table, she haemorrhaged from everywhere and died. Dr Harman asked if they could do an autopsy as none of the Casterbridge vets ever seen anything like it. They even tested for Anthrax which was negative! The autopsy showed no sign of cancer, it just looked like cancer because her lungs were full of blood. She died of multiple organ failure and internal bleeding. The autopsy revealed definite neurotoxic and haemotoxic poisoning and the symptoms were highly consistent with cycad poisoning. I do not have cycads in my garden and I can only assume she picked up a cycad seed on one of our many walks together and ate it as they are apparently quite palatable. My poor little girl died a horrible death and I didn t even get to say goodbye to her. I hope that by sharing our story I can save just one dog Ed: Certain endangered cycads are protected in South Africa and it is illegal to destroy these. However, you can ask your local municipality to remove them from your property should you so wish. Dr Harman of Casterbridge Animal Hospital in White River has kindly shared some information on cycads and their toxicity with us in the article below. Cycad Poisoning in Dogs Cycad Poisoning as a whole is a rare and unusual occurrence in common small animal practice. Due to its rare occurrence the public in general is inadequately educated about the very severe nature of such poisonings. During the last year of practice here in White River at the Casterbridge Animal Hospital, we have come across two cases of Cycad poisoning over the last few months (March-May 2015). This has caused growing concern amongst us vets as well as amongst members of the public that have been affected by the devastating loss of their animals. It is due to this fact that we would like to circulate some commonly known facts about Cycad Poisoning to the wider public. Page 9 of 14

Cycasin, the main toxin contained within the cycad seed, is highly hepatotoxic (toxic to the liver) as well as toxic to other parts of the gastrointestinal system. Due to the very aggressive nature of the toxins contained in cycad seeds we as vets usually have a very bad outcome to treatment, no matter how aggressively or early we start with treatment. Below is an outline of the plants and the causes of the toxicity. At the end of the article I have attached a list of other plants that cause toxicity in dogs and cats. The Cycad family encompasses a large variety of plants. Often referred to as sago palms, cycads are hardy evergreen yard plants that grow in warm climates, and are also used as ornamental houseplants. Cycad toxicosis has been described in people and many animals, including dogs, sheep, and cattle. In this article, I focus on the clinical signs, diagnosis, and treatment of cycad toxicosis in dogs. Toxicity and Mechanism of Action Cycad palms produce three toxins: cycasin, beta-methylamino-l-alanine, and an unidentified toxin.3-6 Cycasin, which is converted to its aglycone, methylazoxymethanol, may cause centrilobular and midzonal coagulative hepatic necrosis and gastrointestinal irritation. In addition, cycasin is carcinogenic, mutagenic, and teratogenic. Beta-methylamino-L-alanine, a neurotoxic amino acid, causes ataxia in rats and is implicated in Guam disease in people. Guam disease is characterized by symptoms similar to those of Alzheimers, Parkinsons, and Lou Gehrig (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) diseases. The unidentified toxin, a high-molecular-weight compound, may cause hind limb paralysis in cattle because of axonal degeneration in the central nervous system. All parts of the plant are toxic, but the seeds contain higher amounts of cycasin than do other parts of the plant. Dogs usually ingest the seeds. Although toxic, the young leaves are palatable. Clinical Signs In one study, the most common signs in dogs ingesting cycad plants were gastrointestinal, hepatic, and neurologic. In cases reported to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) Animal Poison Control Center and recorded in the AnTox database between 1988 and 1998, the most common signs of cycad toxicosis in dogs were vomiting (with or without blood), depression, diarrhoea (with or without blood), and anorexia. Gastrointestinal signs may develop within 24 hours, but bilirubin concentrations and serum alanine aminotransferase and alkaline phosphatase activities may not become elevated for 24 to 48 hours. Signs may last from 24 hours to nine days. Owners need to be cautioned that at the slightest suspicion of cycad consumption a veterinarian should be consulted and vomition needs to be introduced to get rid of the ingested seed. This could potentially be the only way of stopping the onset of clinical signs. Once some of the seed has been ingested however or clinical signs have commenced the effect of treatment can be very limited. Pathology Gastrointestinal abnormalities in dogs with cycad poisoning include haemorrhage and mucosal necrosis. Histological abnormalities in the livers of these dogs include cirrhosis with marked focal centrilobular and midzonal coagulation necrosis. Even with very aggressive treatment in studies around the world it was found that there will be a mortality of 50%-80% in dogs. General information on Plant Toxicoses Plant poisoning occurs less commonly in dogs and cats than in herbivorous livestock, but numerous cases have been documented worldwide, most of them caused by common and internationally widely cultivated ornamental garden and house plants. Few cases of poisoning of cats and dogs have been reported in Southern Africa, but many of the plants that have caused poisoning in these species elsewhere are widely available in the sub-region. The list includes Melia azedarach (Syringa), Brunfelsia spp. ( Yesterday-Todayand-Tomorrow ), Datura stramonium (Jimsonweed/ Stinkblaar), a wide variety of lilies and lily-like plants, cycads, plants that contain soluble oxalates, plants containing cardiac glycosides and other cardiotoxins and euphorbias (Euphorbia pulcherrima, E. tirucalli). Poisoning by plant products such as macadamia nuts, onions and garlic, grapes and raisins, cannabis (marijuana, dagga) or hashish and castor oil seed or Page 10 of 14

seedcake are also occasionally documented. Many of the poisonings are not usually fatal, but others frequently result in death unless rapid action is taken by the owner and the veterinarian, underlining the importance of awareness of the poisonous potential of a number of familiar plants. Member News It is with sadness that we announce the passing of two great doyennes of the Western Cape Field Trial community - Sarah Fraser and Pat Griffiths. Sarah sadly passed in a tragic car accident on the 27 th of March, just shy of her 74 th Birthday and Pat died on the 8 th of June from collapsed lungs after battling for some time with ill health. Both Ladies ran Labradors in trials, were respected FT Judges, served on the Cape Field Trial Club Committee for many years and contributed greatly to the sport. Our condolences go to their families, their close friend Dale Fabian (longstanding LRKC Member and Chairlady of the Cape Field Trial Club), Jorisna Bonthuys and all our Western Cape field trialling and obedience members. Dale Fabian writes: Pat came onto the field trial scene when she bought a yellow girl bred by me with Bardale Beat About The Bush FTA MHR as sire. Before she knew it, we had roped her on to the Committee as Secretary. She later imported Sabre, a lovely big black working dog and bred on with her two yellow girls, Gypsy and Tosca under the kennel name Cilgerran, the name in honour of her Welsh roots. The last dog Pat kept was Cida, a fox red boy from Zimbabwe. Pat became Chairlady of the CFTC two years ago and poured her heart and soul into the role, working hard to grow membership and interest in Field Trials. Now she and Sarah can be together again. Both Ladies will be greatly missed. Pat Griffiths and Cida (photo courtesy of Dale Fabian) We are delighted to welcome the following little immigrants who already have stamps from exotic locations in their passports: Molika (photo courtesy of Marietjie Nicholson) Play_Full_Team Mon Milu Molika of Berrakaw, imported by Pierre and Marietjie Nicholson of Berrakaw Labradors. Molika (or Precious Pine - named after a pine tree endemic to Macedonia) is Berrakaw Kennel's first black Labbie. She was born on the 22 nd of November 2014 in Skopje, Macedonia and her new Mum says she will appear in the show ring as soon as her documentation for registration with KUSA has been processed. Welcome Molika! Keeping it in the family Sandy Borralho (Mirain Labradors) and Annemarie van Heerden (Amadeuze Labradors) are the proud owners of the gorgeous brother and sister pair of Seabirds Nothing Compares (Baloo) and Seabirds Nobody s Business (Amber). The pups, at just 9 weeks of age, were escorted all the way from Sweden by Sandy and her husband Carlos. We hope your babies settle in well and bring you much joy! Saying goodbye Renier Jansen van Vuuren (Adamasdor Labradors) sadly said goodbye to an old friend and one of the greatest Labradors he has owned, Ch Tapeatom Goliath of Cellan (Markus) who passed away at nearly 12 years of age. Markus was a true Labrador in every way and was also very successful in Page 11 of 14

the show ring, being one of just a select handful of Labradors in South Africa to ever win an All Breeds Best in Show title at the Western Gauteng Kennel Club All Breeds Championship Show in In the same year, Markus won Best in Show at the LRKC Championship Show and went on to win the LRKC Victor Ludorum trophy. Markus will be sorely missed but his legacy will live on through his many offspring who have made their mark in the show ring since. A special congratulations to Kevin and Jane Pott (Craignair Labradors) and to owner Dwayne Malcolm on Craignair Switch Blade (Blade) being awarded KUSA National Labrador Retriever and KUSA National Reserve Gundog 2015 at the recent KUSA Breed Nationals under Judges Mr E. Sangkunakup (Thailand) and Ms E. Caminade-Lavault (Zambia). Well done Blade! Seen at the KUSA Classic show weekend - Evidently waffles and large dollops of cream are the solution to every problem Ed: We do not have permission from Pierre and Marietjie Nicholson to publish this photo but did so anyway! But to ensure that dog owners and breeders don t suffer as a result of the new policy, KUSA put together a task force to liaise with major airlines on behalf of members. Subsequently, BidAir has announced that it is now offering a flat rate if you are flying with your dog(s). New flat rate if you are on the same flight: Crate Number Weight (Max) Crate size (Max) All Destinations excluding 14% VAT Nr ½ 5 kg 30 x 30 x 30 R Nr 1 8 kg 45 x 30 x 35 Nr 2 13 kg 55 x 35 x 40 Nr 3 16 kg 60 x 35 x 45 Nr 4 22 kg 65 x 40 x 50 Nr 5 37 kg 75 x 45 x 65 R Nr 6 42 kg 85 x 45 x 65 Nr 7 56 kg 95 x 50 x 70 R Nr 8 70 kg 105 x 50 x 80 Nr 9 88 kg 110 x 60 x 80 Nr kg 120 x 65 x 85 Page 13 of 14
