4 River Place Garden Club Coordinates Second Native Plant Garden Using a grant from a community supporter, The River Place Garden Club contracted John Rearick of Nature s Design to landscape the second native plant garden. The new garden surrounds the bench on Big View just past China Garden which was paid for and installed by the Homeowners Association. The previous garden club project was the park bench on River Place Blvd paid for and installed by the Muncipal Utility District. HOA and MUD installed the benches to take advantage of the beautiful views throughout the neighborhood and have been generous in their support of the garden club s on-going efforts to beautify these scenic areas. We are grateful to Becky Douglass, chairperson for the Community Service Committee for her vision and hard work to bring this project to completion. A special thank you to Art Jistel of MUD, and Millard McBurney of HOA for coordinating efforts and support with their organizations on this project. All native plants in both gardens are draught and deer resistant. We hope the residents and guests of River Place will enjoy the gardens and their beautiful views. Rumor has it that we recently had a marriage proposal at the River Place Blvd. bench and garden. T h e g a r d e n c l u b m e e t i n g s w i l l r e s u m e a g a i n i n September. 6 Summer is here and you deserve a place to enjoy it ~ Imagine being able to step out for a romantic evening without leaving your property! Outdoor spaces are becoming the latest greatest retreat to enjoy with family and friends. Decorating outdoor rooms is just as important as the inside rooms. Creating beautiful, useful spaces outdoors is a great way to extend your home s living space. First, it is important to determine the primary function of the space. Identify how you live. Do you spend time at the table or are you more of a lounger? How many people are typically together at one time in the outdoor area? Do you want to hear the peacefulness of nature, or do you want a tv mounted high to create the perfect place to sit back and watch a game? Now it is time to create a seating plan Furnishings Outdoor furniture has changed dramatically. It used to be very plain and functional. Now you can find a wide variety of furniture made of weather resistant materials. An organic look is very popular now. Bamboo, dark metal and wood paired with beautiful woven fibers are great options. Cushions soften your outdoor furniture, making it more inviting and comfortable. Many are fade resistant, stain resistant and waterproof Celebrity s Caribbean Outdoor Living Trends By Kirsten Hanna perfect for the outdoors. Color Citrus tones, bright yellow, green, orange and aqua are very popular this summer, especially in accent pieces like pillows or cushions. To make your outdoor seem like an extension of your home, I recommend using the same primary color scheme you ve used in the interior, varying the intensity of the colors by using brighter, more dominant shades. Lighting Very important!! Create different levels of lighting with candles, gas lanterns, chandeliers, and table lamps. You can find a variety of designs depending of your style and the ambiance you want to create. Torches and candles will create a warm and inviting casual mood whether they are lining a path or standing sentinel around a patio. Additionally, don t be afraid to pull out your Christmas lights in the middle of the summer! Wrapping that small iridescent string of white bulbs around tree trunks and branches will bring a romantic atmosphere to your backyard or courtyard, even in July. Accessorizing Define your seating area with an outdoor area rug. Because outdoor area rugs come in so many different colors and designs, you can use (Continued on Page 7) Providing timely and compassionate orthopaedic care River Review - July 2008 of Northwest Austin 9901 N. 7 Outdoor - (Continued from Page 6) it as your inspiration tool to help you select your accent colors. New materials and fibers are now being used to create colorful area rugs resistant to fading and mildew. Further, tone down the summer heat of your décor with some neutral outdoor drapes. Use them on terraces, covered patios, verandas or to create poolside cabana spaces with a luxury feel. Draperies can make your outdoor living area cozier and more private. Outdoor fountains also add a majestic soothing element to your patio. Add outdoor wall art, such as colorful metal panels, a sculpture, or an all weather art print. Plants are a must! Even if you do not have a green thumb, there are wonderful not real options that you can incorporate into your seating space that will give your outdoor living area a finished and completed look. Viola! Enjoy the Summer! Pet owners are often surprised to learn common household plants are toxic to pets, with perhaps the Sago Palm being the most prevalent toxic plant in this area. Sago Palm trees contain a very potent toxin called Cycasin. The toxin, found in all parts of the plant, has its greatest concentration in the seeds and root balls of the Sago. A pet ingesting as few as 1 or 2 seeds can experience acute liver failure and death; therefore, please plant Sagos where your pets do not have access to them. If your pet does ingest any part of a Sago Palm, seek veterinary attention immediately. Lilies are probably the second most prevalent plant toxicity in this area. Several types of Lilies are toxic, with the principal ones being Easter Lilies, Tiger Lilies, Stargazer Lilies, Peace Lilies and Day Lilies. Lilies are extremely toxic to cats. Generally, toxicosis occurs only in Summer Pet Health By Jim Amyx, DVM River Review cats. All parts of the Lilly contain toxins that can cause acute renal failure. As with Sago Palms, there is no specific antidote for the toxins, however expedient veterinary treatment and supportive care can improve your pet s prognosis for survival. Other common toxic plants are Oleanders, Azaleas, Rhododendron, Laurel, Castor Beans, Foxgloves, Cyclamens, and Yews. Common houseplants that can be toxic as well. Go to the ASPCA poison control website ( for additional information on toxic plants AND foods grapes, raisins, onions, and chocolate are all toxic to your pet too! I hope this Summer Pet Health series helps you and your pet enjoy the Great Outdoors this summer. Have a Great Summer! You are Invited... 8 Mobile Billboards to be Phased Out Over the Next Two Years in Austin Submitted by John Anderson On June 5, 2008 Austin s City Council voted 5-1 on a new sign resolution that affected both traditional and mobile billboard advertising in Austin. While the vote effectively banned or prohibits mobile billboard advertising in Austin City s full-purpose jurisdiction, it is important to note that only a particular form of mobile advertising will be banned in Austin and existing mobile billboard companies will have two full years to phase out their operations and/or modify their services to be in compliance of the new resolution. The City's Definition of a mobile billboard is: "A sign installed or displayed on a vehicle operating in the public right-of-way for the purpose of advertising a business or entity that is unrelated to the owner of the vehicle's primary business. The term does not include a sign that is displayed or installed on: a) a non-motorized vehicle, including but not limited to pedi-cabs; b) a bus that is used primarily for the purpose of transporting multiple passengers; c) a taxicab, if the sign complies with the requirements of the City Code Section ; or d) a vehicle operated in the normal course of the vehicle's owner's business, if the sign contains advertising or identifying information directly related to the business and is not used merely, mainly or primarily to display advertising that is unrelated to the business. The adopted resolution as it relates to mobile billboard restriction/ ban reads: Prohibit A mobile billboard within the City s full-purpose jurisdiction, except that a mobile billboard operator with an office located within the boundaries of the Capitol Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO) on the effective date of Ordinance is NOT subject to the prohibition until two years after the effective date of the ordinance. Further it was made clear by both the Planning Commission and City Council that AFTER those two years the two recognized mobile billboard operators in Austin could modify their business model to include, say delivery or other services that would keep them COMPLIANT under the new ordinance. There are some remaining questions as to the fairness and possibly legality of this type of ban that are being further explored. For more information regarding the new sign ordinance contact John Anderson at Invest in your home, Invest in your landscape. A Clemson University study found landscaping can result in more than a 100% return on investment The return on investment is contingent upon the quality of the landscape installation It s important that you find the right landscape designer/ contractor for your project and use only high quality materials. 10 Pet Corner The Heart Rescue in Bee Cave has Rescued Pets for Adoption! Submitted by Heather Pennington Rescued dogs and puppies on weekends 11am-4pm. Rescued cats and kittens seven days a week in the cattery. We hope to see you this summer! There is a loving pet waiting for you and your family. Call for directions. Thunderstorms, Firecrackers, and Other Loud Sounds Submitted by Luis Escobar, Dog Behavioral Therapist & Master Trainer Does your dog jump at the clap of thunder? Does he bark at the bang of fireworks? Or is he calm with seemingly no reaction to the loud crashes? Dogs have varying reactions to loud noises. Some may tear up the house, others may try to hide or run from the scary sounds, while others seem just fine. If your dog appears fearful of clamoring sounds, check with your vet. Some dog s ears are so sensitive that the noisy clapping of thunder may actually hurt their ears. If a dog is somewhat deaf, these sounds may also cause adverse reactions. Your vet also can help if your pup needs a sedative to calm him during a noisy storm or explosive celebrations of the 4th of July. Also check with your vet about using Bach Rescue Remedy if a sedative is not appropriate. Since you are not always home when storms hit, you will want to set up an area for your dog in which he feels safe. Crate training your dog offers him that safe haven. He should be able to access the designated refuge whenever you are not at home. Some dogs react to an approaching storm long before it even reaches the area. It is as though that the dog is reacting to the sound of thunder from the distanced storm. The dog, however, is actually reacting to the presence of static electricity in the atmosphere (as happens with the drop of barometric pressure prior to a storm). These dogs need to the grounded. An anti-static mat can be placed in or under the dog s kennel. The kennel should be situated in a way that the dog thinks it has entered the house. The kennel should be soundproofed with rubber-backed carpet with an extra piece of carpet across the opening to create a flap that closes after the dog enters. If the kennel is a safe place, the dog should be allowed to come and go as it wishes. Some dogs become so fearful that they may hurt themselves if the kennel is closed and they cannot escape. If the kennel is soundproofed, the bang of thunder and fireworks may be diminished and the dog may remain calm. If crating your dog is not a possibility or you do not have a crate, find a place where the sound is less intense. In a thunderstorm, the dog should be in a closed-in area that does not let in the flash of light. The best solution, however, for dogs that are fearful of noises is desensitization. This is the process of helping your dog work through his fear of storms and other loud noises. It can be a slow process, and you must take time every day to work with your dog. Do not console your dog when he is fearful. Instead, distract him with something like play. He will be so busy playing that he may not even hear the thunder. You may also want to use a soundtrack of storm noises, firecrackers, car backfiring or other sharp sounds. Play the tape at a low level and simultaneously distract him by keeping him focused on play, on you or on another activity. Over time, increase the volume of the recording. Repeat this process until your dog has become accustomed to the noises. Case Study: Rex, a Rottweiler, would begin acting anxious when a storm approached. The owner could not settle the dog, and he would hurt himself when the storm arrived. Rex would run through the house or the backyard crashing into things. One time he had escaped trying to run from the storm and was not found until after the weather calmed. The solution of using a crate with antic-static pads helped to calm Rex. The soundproofed crate diminished the sound of the thunder and the carpet prevented the flash of light inside. Rex is now calmer during a storm and much happier. The owner now has a calm dog and no longer needs to search for Rex after a storm. 10 River Review - July 2008 Copyright 2008 Peel, Inc.

Submitted by Victor Thompson Mom, where are the car keys? Your teen can t wait to start driving. But I know how worried you must be about your child getting behind the wheel of a car. Although the number of auto-accident injuries and fatalities among drivers between ages 15 and 20 is falling, accidents are still the leading cause of death for that age group. The good news: You can take steps to help keep your young driver safer: Limit night driving. Most fatal accidents involving young drivers occur between 9 p.m. and midnight. Night driving requires more skill than driving in daylight, and young drivers may be more prone to distraction, carelessness or fatigue when driving after dark. Let your teen get plenty of daytime-driving experience before you allow nighttime driving. Restrict the number of passengers. Nearly two-thirds of teen passenger deaths occur when the driver is also a teen. Teen friends in the car may distract a novice driver. And sometimes peer passengers encourage recklessness in a normally safe young driver. Limit the number of passengers your teen may have in the car. Choose safer wheels. That flashy red sports car or cool SUV may be your teen s dream machine, but think safety when shopping for a vehicle, and look for one with protective features. For example, midsize cars typically withstand crashes better than small ones, and many newer models hold up better in crashes than older ones. Newer cars also offer improved safety features such as airbags and antilock brakes. 13 Sunday, June 8 was the official Ice cream kickoff for the 1st annual Locks of Love campaign, the brainchild of Sandra Bennett. Locks of Love is a not-for-profit organization that provides free hairpieces to children 18 years and younger in the US and Canada suffering from any type of medical hair loss. The exceptionally well attended event was hosted by Rick and Kristi Nordin, at Cups and Cones in Steiner Ranch, Chandi Wagner, an executive with the Girl Scouts of America and other business sponsors. The 69 girls, women and Moms who recently signed up to shed their locks for this worthy cause were treated to fancy nails & toes administered by local Girl Scouts, ice cream cones, fun games and more. Each participant was provided a beautiful headband to embellish and wear to all the coming events. Jewels, puffy paints and glue were supplied at the craft table. Most participants were photographed by Liz Humphrey. The girls will be treated to a Back to School Measurement Party in October. On December 7, 2008, the girls will be photographed again with their sleek new look. Girls ranging in age from 3 years old to Moms have signed up to donate their luxurious locks to kids who cannot grow their own hair. Moms and daughters have joined together to support this great cause. Girls from all over Austin, including Georgetown, Round Rock, South Austin, Steiner Ranch, Grand View Hills, River Place and Leander are participating. Many local Girl Scout Troops (including one entire Troop) and their leaders are also among the participants. Each contributing Girl Scout will earn a Merit Badge. It s not too late to donate your long tresses to this most deserving group of kids. Hair must be ten inches long at time of cut and can be colored, but not highlighted or permed. The next event created for these great girls is a fabulous Girls Night Out. There will be more fun activities in store for the donors over the next 6 months. Mom and Daughter teams are encouraged to join in on the merriment...all in the name of fun, fun fun! Local businesses have come together to support and help implement Sandra s idea.
