4 Articles from the Dr. David Kenney Collection DAVID KENNEY REPRINTS #7 Reprinted from: THE LAST BOBWHITE, DAVE KENNEY S OUTDOORS IN FACT AND FICTION Miller s Desert Dust Gun Dog to National Champion in Five Months When Miller s Desert Dust was leashed and led off the field, at Crab Orchard one warm, dry day last November, there was nothing for owner Louie Miller and handler Dick Sweet to do but sweat it out for the next day and a half, until results of the national open championship stake were announced. Dusty had just delivered an outstanding race, bird hunting all the way, with good range and handling response and an impeccable performance on three covies of quail. But in contention were 21 filed champions in a strong entry of 56, and not until the last dog had been whistled in could the comparative quality of his heat be judged. As the stake wore along, however, the performance of this handsome white and orange son of my own Bill Saxton s Penny took on greater stature, and there was general agreement as he was crowned national champion for 1962, that a proper judgment had been made. In a potentially strong field he had been outstanding for desire and application, for speed and range and drive, for the ability to find and handle wild and flighty birds in short, for all the qualities that together make a bird dog great. Miller s Desert Dust was truly a Cinderella dog of the 1962 nationals. Louie Miller had left his three-year-old shooting dog with Dick Sweet in July for his first professional training, and proudly took him home a national champion less than five months later. Dusty had spent two seasons helping Louie to gun Missouri quail, and the rest of his time in the Miller s backyard as their chief pride and joy, until the time he went away to school. An entry or two in amateur stakes had convinced Louie that the dog had a future in field trials, and how right he proved to be! Louie Miller can also claim knowing how to pick a winner as a puppy. Only the very wise and the foolish (and there are considerable more of the latter than the former raising bird dogs) feel that they can consistently choose the best prospect of a litter. But that is just what Louie did with Dusty. Sent a puppy he did not altogether like, he was invited to return it and take his choice of the litter and that is how Dusty came to go home with the Millers. Dick Sweet found Dusty a willing pupil from the start. He gave him all age manners, built drive and purpose into his naturally extensive range, and placed him second at the Minnesota trial in September. This qualified the dog for the national championship and already it was apparent that he could be a strong contender. Dick brought the dog along carefully, with attention to temperament and particular characteristics, and by November it was ready. Skillful handling and Dusty s driving desire to find and stand game did the rest. Dick s confidence in the dog is illustrated by the fact that he told his friend Bob Yuill to go as high as he had to to get Dusty in the pre-stake Calcutta and Bob did. Many a good Brittany will go to the starting line in this year s (1963) national championship. When the last dog down has faced the hazards of Crab Orchard s deer, thickets, extensive fields, and a bountiful supply of quail, chances are the winner, whether it is Miller s Desert Dust again or some other equally deserving campaigner, will be a dog that learned to hunt its birds the hard way before the gun, in big rugged country, in search of native covies. The one-course dog, field trial wise, that has learned to trot the back course and then cash in on pen raised, chickensmelling chirpers in the bird field, may win big on other venues but in a onehour go at Crab Orchard s matchless courses another type will probably prevail. Nothing makes a true bird dog more quickly and completely, regardless of the length of its hair and tail, than long hours spent in natural surroundings in quest of native birds. Give those good young dogs one or two full seasons in the hunting field and watch a better bird dog appear. During the Crab Orchard days, the handlers were on foot and most horses in the gallery lived on the Crab Orchard grounds. Dick Sweet lived between the Crab Orchard Grounds and David s hometown of Carbondale, IL. Both Louie Miller and his wife passed away within the last few years. Marquart, Jane Hopper, Cindy Cropek, Judge Cliff Mesnard, Judge Ron Auten L-R Kneeling: Gil Hopper, Al Cropek, Dan Reidl, Jill Schaefer Arriving in Ionia on the evening of Saturday, October 30, all the conversation was about the high wind, challenging weather and tough scenting conditions that plagued the open championship. Fortunately for those competing in the amateur, that was NOT to be the case. A new weather pattern was ushered in on Saturday with clear skies, light breezes and cool temperatures which lasted the entire three days of the amateur championship. The clear sky allowed the temperature to dip into the 20 s at night so there were many cold fingers and toes in the gallery each morning. In the afternoon, as the sun reached its peak, we peeled off a layer and soaked up the warmth and watched some great dogs! The weather was ideal as was the entire event due to the efforts of Jim Carter and the great group that he assembled for the task. Stakes manager Jeff Currier, trial secretary Darlene Dow, head bird planter Bob Burchett, course marshal Tommy Thomas, Chuck & Theda Langstaff on the dog wagon, Diana Kubitz hospitality chairman, the entire field trial committee, and all those that planted birds and acted as gallery marshals helped to make this a first class championship and enjoyable three days. We were also delighted to have back our super wrangler Will Langley and his great horses and tack. All of the judges rode Will s horses and, as we all know, it is important to have a good mount if you are going to spend three days in the saddle. Thanks Will..we sure missed you last year! Purina continues to be a sponsor of our national championships making both a monetary donation and providing dog food to the winners. We sincerely appreciate your support. Many thanks as well to Tritronics, Garmin and Carter Brittany Kennels who donated prizes for the winner. The judges for this championship were Ron Auten from Michigan, Cliff Mesnard from Ohio and RJ Marquart from Washington. From the beginning of the event to the end they gave each dog their undivided attention. Being aware that this was an amateur event, they were kind to the handlers, relaxed and positive. The told me they were looking for a power dog one that hit hard and finished with the same speed and strength as it started. The Winners Power was what the judges said they were looking for and the performance of FC/AFC Jazz s Sweetest Little Secret, Karo, was positively powerful! She broke away on the derby course in the field before the creek crossing and by the time we reached the other side of the creek we knew that she had something going. She sped along the line above the swamp and cast out onto the gun dog course. She dug deep into the course along the pond and then streaked across the treeline in front of us as we headed into the orchard. She worked the orchard thoroughly and then disappeared to the front. Karo next appeared taking the line of oaks and then made a huge cast right through the big field and toward the large oak at the top of the hill. We all held our breath as Cindy Cropek galloped up to make sure she didn t find the opening in the fence! Cindy successfully guarded the road and Karo took to the top of the hill heading toward the dike. Gill took his charge across the dike and she was off again casting toward the road to course three and along the ridge just missing an encounter with Nitro on point at 36 minutes. Now she really turned it on, zipping up the small hill and then hugging the left edge in a spectacular cast which rewarded her with a find down in the valley at 46 minutes. A bright white statue with high head and tail can be seen from across the field and she stood tall as Gil made the long walk to her and flushed a small covey. Following her find, Karo made short work of getting to the front and Gil had to work hard to join her. She finished the hour just after we crossed the road two fields before the boy scout bridge looking like she could easily run another hour. 4

Running on course 1 she swept the field at the top of the hill on the left, crossed in front and disappeared to the right. Point was called by her scout at 8 and we rode to find her standing on the far right edge where Al flushed a bird over the staunch dog. As we made our way back to the front Zoey stopped at 13 on a pile of feathers then again a couple hundred yards ahead where a couple birds were flushed. Zoey then continued to sweep the fields as she made her way quickly to the front and, just as we broke into Hires field, she hit along the right edge at 20 and the flush was made with all in order. At 29 she was spotted on point with her bracemate as we came through the cut and there was another divided find at 36 in the trees. As we are descending the hill Zoey is sighted standing in the middle of the field half way down the hill on the left, Alvin came in to back and a large covey was flushed.a picture perfect moment. Her last find was at 46 minutes at the bottom of the hill where Al flushed a single. She continued to run hard and finished the hour reaching for forward as we came onto the derby course. One of the reasons that Al & Cindy Cropek decided to retire Zoey was to make way for her kids, particularly the one nipping at her heels High Hopes Little Ann. Also running on course 1, Annie started in much the same way as her dam. She was found on point by her scout at 11 on the far right. She was a beautiful picture on this and all her finds. She was sighted ahead again at 15 standing and a bird was flushed cleanly. At 18 Annie was locked up in the brush area just past Hires and her bracemate came in and pressured her, she stood tall but took a couple steps at the flush. In the big fields before we went down the hill Annie really showed her speed, running fast and forward along the edges. At 33 both dogs were standing ahead in the trees on the right with Annie buried inside. Annie slowed a bit as we went through the shoot and onto the derby course but turned it on again and shot ahead with plenty of steam when time was called. A proud grandma wiped tears from her eyes watching this amazing three year old put on a show. FC/AFC Covey Rise s Rambo JR had us all standing up in our saddles as he broke away on the derby course and worked his way deep into the course on the left. After we crossed the creek he powered along the swamp edge then shot forward into the gun dog course. Chuck had a little difficulty getting JR to come with him in the orchard then point was called by the scout at 21 just before the orchard. Following his find, JR sped to the front and executed a perfect back, when he encountered Fancy on point. Chuck made a valiant effort to gain the front with his dog (rumor has it that he was attempting to jog) and arrived just in time to see an antsy bird lift as both dogs stayed in place. Then JR shared a find with Fancy at the end of the orchard. Another was added at 35 before the dike. After crossing the dike JR disappeared forward and when we came through the cut he was standing tall in the far corner of the left hand edge. He took a couple steps forward as Chuck made the lengthy walk but was staunch as a covey was flushed. He tallied another find at 55 and finished the hour with plenty left in his tank. The Running Final Performances 2010 may be the beginning of a new decade but for the ABC National Amateur Gun Dog Championship it was the end of an era. Each day I was told of another top contender competing in 2010 for the last time. I would like to pay tribute to these fine dogs by reporting their performances first. The final performance of NAGDC/FC/AFC High Hopes Fly By Nite owned by Al & Cindy Cropek and handled by Al was described above. This was the third time that Zoey was runner-up at the NAGDC and she was awarded the championship in Running in the very first brace, DC/AFC Wrigley s Chip s Makin His Mark, handled by his owner Mike Poehler, showed us why he has been a contender. He was away quickly and scored finds at 8, 12 and then again at 16 where his bracemate came in honored the point to paint a classic picture on the treeline with the sun rising behind the gallery. Chip then returned the favor and backed at 20 where a covey was flushed. He was stopped again, along with Twinkie, at 28 and once more at 33 with Twinkie honoring. Unfortunately Chip began to fade and was leashed by Mike at 40. The last brace of Sunday evening was to be the final running of 2X NAGDC/DC/AFC Clyde s Double Trouble owned and handled by Kevin Remmers. As Kevin sang WOO DOG to Dubb for the last time at Ionia, he proceeded to show everybody how to execute course 1 reaching out to the edges and finishing his casts around the big fields. Dubb didn t have the speed of the young dogs but he certainly had the application. 5

8 First brace of the National Amateur Gun Dog Championship- Wrigley Chip s Makin His Marc - Mike Poehler & Mr. P s Twinkie - John Poland. Chip is backing and Twinkie is pointing at the island exiting Hires Field, just before the Horsemans Campground. He had solid finds at 26 and 28 on the top and took off again working the lines. As we came down the hill Dubb was standing on the right at 39 where his bracemate came in to back but unfortunately Kevin was not able to produce a bird. Descending cardiac hill, Dubb hugged the right line and finished another fine cast as time was about to be called. There was no quit in the old boy! Running in the second brace on Tuesday with Karo, the 2008 NAGDC/ DC/AFC Triumphant s Too Hot To Handle owned by Jeff & Gina Currier and handled by Jeff, put down a solid performance. He was always forward and made some strong casts and was a stunning picture on his finds at 36 and 48 minutes. At 51 he was standing again, but not with his usual style so Jeff tapped him on. Upon relocation Nitro put the bird to flight and was picked up. DC/AFC Sweetwater Billy Tucker, owned by Larry & Sue Bates and handled by Larry, made his last bid ( maybe per Larry) to claim the iron dog at Ionia in the third brace on Tuesday morning. Tucker was last year s runner up and took third in 2005 and We broke away in the field before the boy scout bridge and Tucker got his feet under him and started to roll. At 10 he was standing along the brushy edge, in the second field after crossing the bridge, but Larry wasn t able produce a bird. Now Tucker was on a mission and, like Dubb, he started showing us all how it s done making some good casts and working forward. When we got back onto course 1 he was looking good but at 44 minutes Larry got out the leash when he saw that Tucker was no longer up to the task. Thanks for the memories old boy! I will miss seeing all these fine dogs as I know their owners will miss running them. I must imagine that they are like me when they come to Ionia each year. As you ride along all those wonderful memories come back like his find along those trees and that big cast along the far edge here. That alone justifies the trip.. The Running It was cold as the first brace of the 2010 National Amateur Gun Dog Championship took off at about 8:30 on Halloween but it was a beautiful morning with barely a cloud in the sky. DC/AFC Wrigley Chip s Makin His Mark Mike Poehler Mr. P s Twinkie John Poland If anyone was sleepy as they rode out this morning this pair quickly woke them up with plenty of action to start the morning. Twinkie was standing at 1 along the trees at the top of the hill ahead then worked his 6 way to the front and honored Chip s point at 16 from well away in the open field. At 20 the dogs traded places and Chip backed Twinkie s find where a covey was flushed and Twinkie took a hop toward the flight. He went on gaining speed with each field he covered. He executed another back at 33 in the field as Chip was pointing in the trees. He remained strong and forward and was rewarded with his last find at 50 at the bottom of the hill. He finished the hour well. FC/AFC Covey Rise s Rambo JR Chuck Schafer(see above) High Hopes Fly n Fancy Free Al Cropek These two took off from the edge of the derby course. Fancy was down to business quickly with a find at 5 in the clumps before the creek crossing. She retained her superb style through the flush. Fancy crossed the creek and took to the swamp edge with JR and headed to the orchard where she hit point at 24. JR came in and honored her point and we waited for Chuck to arrive which happened just as the antsy bird took flight. At the end of the orchard the dogs shared a find and Chuck flushed with all in order. At 31 Fancy was standing as we approached the big oaks. Thinking she didn t have the bird, Al tapped her forward and she pushed up a bird and took a leap to end her time. FC/AFC Coos Rylee Roger McPherson DC/AFC Sciroco Del Prado Les Casselberry Rylee shot forward and, just as I was looking up from starting my watch, was standing on the path ahead. Rico took the left edge and came around just as the bird lifted in front of Rylee and didn t stop. Rico s bid ended at 2 a victim of the continuous course. Rylee scored again at 6 and then at 17 in the brushy area to the left of the path. At 33 Rylee was missing in the area around cardiac hill and soon after Roger was forced to ask for his tracker. Cardiac hill seemed to swallow up dogs and would take out a few more before the event was over. As we rode in after the first morning I was reminded why I look forward to coming to Ionia, Michigan each fall. After riding through sun drenched fields, over hills, across the bridges and watching beautiful Brittanys zip along edges and execute stunning points and backs I wonder why anyone would want to do anything else on a gorgeous October day? 9 The first brace on Sunday afternoon had plenty of excitement! Buddy had his first find at 14 in the flat and spun to mark a covey as it took flight. Buddy hit again at 21 with Jammer backing but no bird was produced. This was repeated at 23 but this time a bird took to flight with all in order. Buddy scored another at 26 and the bird flushed as Gordon walked to his dog. The pace picked up some now with Buddy working wider and Jammer and Phil struggling a bit to keep abreast. The brace made the opening of the derby course at about 50 minutes and at 55 Phil elected to pick up Jammer. At 57 Buddy ducked into the swamp on the right and came out behind deer but gave up the chase quickly. He finished with a solid find at 59 in the clumps before the creek crossing still maintaining his vigorous pace. DC/AFC Ginjac s Heating It Up Jeff Currier FC/AFC Little Rock It Man Shan Wessles The second brace of the afternoon left from the gun dog breakaway with a light breeze chilling the air. Cajun and Rock It worked the course thoroughly with Rock It swinging wider and scoring a find at 15 exhibiting classic style. Cajun hit point as well in the orchard but wasn t rewarded for his efforts. The dogs handled kindly and scoured the grounds and at 47 we spotted Cajun ahead and Rock It spun and honored the point. Jeff and Cajun tried but failed to locate a bird and Jeff brought out a leash for Cajun. Just before turning to honor Cajun s point Rock It had pushed up a bird just off the path and was taken to the wagon as well. Suemac s Sky King Roger McPherson DC/AFC Jeter III Mike Blondin The clouds rolled in for the third brace of the afternoon which took off from the field after the road. Jeter stood tall on a find in the trees at 4 but no bird was flushed. When he was released Jeter quickly sped through the large field and reached for the front. At this point Roger and Sky got ahead and this reporter never saw them again. Sky did make the hour with a forward pattern and a find at 13 in the fields after the Boy Scout bridge. Jeter disappeared after we crossed the creek and we didn t see him again until he was found ahead on the edge of the course pointing hard with style at 25. Mike flushed a small covey and sent Jeter down the line where he hit again at 26 and a couple birds lifted over the staunch dog. Jeter rimmed the field ahead and raced forward through the shoot to cardiac hill. Mike climbed the hill and his scout worked as Mike called but the dog never showed and at 45 minutes they went in search of Jeter, another dog claimed by cardiac hill. All were disappointed as Jeter was putting down a first class performance. Mr. P s Devil Dog of Coos John Poland 2X NAGDC/DC/AFC Clyde s Double Trouble Kevin Remmers (see above) There was a definite chill in the air as the 4th brace of the afternoon left from the top of the hill on course1. Just as things were getting rolling, a beautiful buck popped out of the cover in the flats and fortunately neither dog chased. Devil showed that he is a bird dog with finds at 13 and a stop to flush at 15 but, while Dubb was working the edges, Devil got to the lines through the middle of the fields. He scored again at 25 and honored Dubb s point at 39 as we descended the hill. Devil continued to show his bird finding ability with a hit at 43 and was stopped again at 48 where John couldn t produce a bird. Of course all this bird work and flushing put Devil and John behind but John gained my respect when at 53 he was RUNNING to gain the front. Devil finished the hour. As the sun was starting to set, the first day came to a close.a VERY LONG DAY. Soon after we arrived back at our rig, the Halloween celebration began with trick-or-treaters at our door followed by the wonderful dinner and celebration for last year s champion. Jim and Drew Carter hosted a roasted pork dinner along with a mystery theater presentation with actors recruited from those attending. POSTED FC/AFC Covey Rise s Rambo Jr. FC/AFC Bulloch s First in Line Alvin John Bulloch NAGDC/FC/AFC High Hopes Fly By Nite Al Cropek (see above) On Monday morning a large gallery and full dog wagon showed up to watch as the former champion, Zoey, and Michigan dog and top contender, Alvin, were going out together in the first brace. I doubt that any were disappointed or felt the cold for long. Zoey s runner-up performance is described above. Alvin was off quickly and rimmed the field on the left at the top of the hill then pushed forward and stopped on the line just onto the flat, at 4 minutes, as a bird lifted in front of him. John took Alvin on and I went to see Zoey on point and the next I saw Alvin he was bright white statue standing on point WAY across the field beyond Hires as John walked to him to flush. The dogs got together at 7

10 the next line of trees and took off forward. Alvin carded another classy find at 26 and divided finds at 29 and 36 and honored Zoey s covey find at 44 and immediately after scored a single in the trees on the right as we went down the hill. Alvin ducked into the trees at the bottom of the hill and appeared to be working something and eventually stopped when a bird lifted at 49. The judges talked but he was taken on and finished the hour running hard down the left field line as we came onto the derby course. Chip s Tailgate Rendezvous Mike Poehler Clyde s-eleets Sassy Kate Steve McClure Just after the dogs broke, running along the big trees, both began to make game, KT and Gus stopped but Gus moved up again and pushed up birds and was taken to the dog wagon. Steve fired for KT and took her on to a find at 15 in the orchard. After Steve flushed for KT, peels of laughter erupted from the gallery as the bird landed on the head of Kevin Remmer s horse! But this bird wasn t done entertaining as it took off again and buzzed KT who, fortunately, was collared. KT was gone for a while as we crossed the shooting range but showed in the field with the big oaks and scored at 34, 48 and 52. KT finished the hour but did catch the judges eyes. DC/AFC Sgt s Smoky Mtn Moonshine Sandy Sargent FC/AFC Casco Bay Jasper Pete Mazzaglia Jack and Jasper took off two fields before Sessions Creek with Jasper running hard. At 10 Jack was on point inside the line on the left and Jasper sped by but couldn t see Jack in the cover. Jack was high and tight as Sandy flushed and now she had to hurry to catch the front. After crossing the creek, Jasper was sighted ahead standing but moved in and pushed up the bird to end his competition at about 20. Jack went on and, following a nice cast down the line of trees, hit point at 22. Sandy had difficulty finding the bird but, following relocation, a bird was flushed over the mannerly dog. Jack continued to work the objectives, always forward as we headed in below the quarry. We held our breath as he retrieved a petrified bird at 50. He was rewarded when he made a cast to the right down the line with his last find at 54 minutes. He finished the hour casting forward still looking strong. Coos Tiger Lily Ray Gorman CH Wrigley Revved Up Cub Barry Steinmetz We continue to revel in the gorgeous, dry, 50 degree, weather as we prepare to release the first brace on Monday afternoon at about 1:30. Turbo stopped on the right at 6 but Barry didn t find a bird. Lily and Turbo weren t taking advantage of the wide open course and at 15 Ray elected to pick up Lily. At 16 Turbo had a find on a dead bird and at 21 he was under a bird and we were ready for the Second brace of the afternoon. NGDC/NAGDC/FC/AFC Peter Gunn Jim Carter AFC Beeline OH Suzannah Steve McClure Pete and Suzy took to the course in the big fields at the top of the hill on course 1. Pete was rewarded quickly with a find at 3 along the edge across from the horse trailer parking area. Jim searched diligently and relocated Pete a couple times and was about to give up when Pete came around a corner and a covey lifted and he stopped quickly. Just after Pete was released from his find he came through the cut and encountered Suzy on point and backed stylishly. When Steve couldn t locate a bird Pete was taken on and later Suzy. Suzy was rewarded at 15 where she stood beautifully through the flush. Suzy scored again at 26 at the bottom of the hill but sadly was up about 35 minutes. She was looking good! At 30 Pete made a BIG cast along the right edge and was standing in the far corner along the fence line. To everyone s dismay, Jim didn t find a bird. Pete s excellent application on the ground left no doubt why he was last year s champion but this was not to be a repeat performance. He finished still running hard and hitting the objectives but would have just another non-productive at 58 to finish his hour. Penelope of Coos Ray Gorman FC/AFC HySteppin Maggie Chris Sennott The last brace on Monday began on the gun dog course. Maggie took off like a shot and headed toward the pond and her first find was at 5 in the orchard where a bird was flushed following a couple relocations. Penny worked the orchard thoroughly but was not successful in finding a bird. Maggie scored at 13 and again at 17 by the big oaks where Chris flushed a covey. Unhappy with his girl s efforts, Ray picked up Penny going across the gun range. Just as we were thinking Maggie really had something going, she stopped at 22 before we crossed the dike, at 30 and then again at 46 where no birds were produced as she stood tall. A disappointed Chris picked up his girl at 50 minutes following her third non- productive. POSTED NAGDC/FC/AFC High Hopes Fly By Nite Coming out of my motorhome on Tuesday I was awed by the spectacular sight of the sun rising and shining through the barn across the road. This was just the beginning of a spectacular morning which would showcase two of the dogs that took home ribbons..including the champion. BGD s Jesse James David Johnson High Hopes Little Ann Dan Riedl (see above) Jesse was a little slow getting started. At 18 he came in as Annie was standing on point and needed a whoa to keep him from interfering. After being released he turned on the jets and started to take the edges sometimes in pursuit of Annie and others independently. At 33 both dogs 8

11 were stopped in the trees before we started down the hill with Jesse on the outside and I believe he was credited for an honor and not a share of the find. He disappeared forward as we went down the hill and wasn t in sight again until we broke out into the derby course. As time was called he was still running hard. NAGCD/DC/AFC Triumphant s Too Hot To Handle Jeff Currier FC/AFC Jazz s Sweetest Little Secret Gil Hopper The performances of these dogs are described above. DC/AFC Sweetwater Billy Tucker Larry Bates (see above) DC Delane Speak of the Devil Dan Riedl The last brace on Tuesday morning broke from the field just before the Boy Scout bridge. Charlie scored a solid find at 15 and went quickly to the front. As we came onto course 1, with 20 minutes left, he was covering the ground well and hunting the objectives. He hit in the line on the right but Dan didn t produce a bird. Then Charlie retrieved a dead bird at 52. With time about to expire, Charlie was located inside a hedgerow on point and, as his handler walked in to flush, a large covey began lifting, one and two birds at a time, like popcorn popping while Charlie stood firm. What a great way to end the morning! For the last afternoon the mounted gallery had thinned but a full dog wagon rode out to watch the last six dogs run in the 2010 amateur championship. Kinwashky Ruby Tuesday Jodi Miller FC Derailed Cindy Cropek Teddy disappeared off the breakaway but showed at the top of the hill and was standing at 5. Cindy flushed a couple as Ted stood proud. Ruby The National Amateur Gun Dog Champion Rotating Trophy Being Donated By The Past Winner diligently worked the fields for 10 minutes but was then under and bird and put on the wagon. Teddy was out of sight as we crossed the big fields on top but showed at 29 standing in the corner where a single was flushed. Teddy showed that he has drive and power but he wasn t in the mood to be a team player so Cindy called it a day just before we came to the hill at 35. DC/AFC This Gamblers Fly n Jeff Currier FC/AFC Spring Hill Pancho Del Prado Steve Lauterbach Ryder and Pancho took off like a shot, flying down the hill and vanishing to the front. Entering the derby course both dogs turned left and Ryder made a superb cast along the edge and stopped on the line coming back on point. Sadly, Jeff wasn t able to produce a bird. Pancho worked the fields high above the creek and we crossed with both dogs out of sight. Ryder showed first along the swamp edge and Pancho popped out at 29 and zipped to the front to join him. They blanketed the orchard and didn t have a find but Ryder scored at the big oaks at 47, taking a few steps as Jeff walked in to flush. We lost Pancho going across the gun range and he reappeared behind the gallery just after Ryder s find. He was injured (limping due to lacerating his groin on briars) and put on the wagon. Ryder finished the hour running strong through the fields past the dike with no additional bird contact. Everyone that brings a dog to this championship is very proud of that dog and his accomplishments and works diligently to prepare him to compete. Such is the case with Steve Lauterbach and his dog Pancho. I am absolutely prejudiced but, Pancho is a good dog and has many fine performances to his credit but never at the national gun dog championships. So, following another disappointing performance, Steve asked Chuck Langstaff to stop the dog wagon half way across the dike and he heaved that gun into the pond! Ascend Phil Bogdanovich Can CH Kinwashly French Velor Leslie Andreas When Cender was released she headed right up onto the rise and went on point at 2 minutes. As Phil was walking to his dog the bird lifted and Cender gave chase to end the first half of the last brace. Val was working the fields with good speed and application and as we approached the road she was standing along the fence line. A bird came out and Val thought about staying but the temptation was too great and she chased at 20. It wasn t long after horses were unsaddled and tack stowed in trailers until the horn was sounding to signal that placements were ready to be presented. 19 2010 ABC NATIONAL OPEN GUN DOG CHAMPIONSHIP L-R Standing: Phyllis Katzel, Paul Katzel, their grandson, Louise & Phil Corlew, Bob Burchett, Val, Judge Mark Johnson, Bill Applegate, Judy Kiracofe, Judge Jack Murphy, Judge Mike Hester, Joe Sikorski, Claire Ricci Tuesday, October 26th 2010 marked the beginning of the American Brittany Club Gun Dog Nationals with 53 dogs vying for the open championship. Weather dawned gray and dreary under the threat of heavy winds with vast predictions of the impending storm. Tornado warning sirens were going off as we approached headquarters for lunch. The predicted ferocity of the storm never developed in Ionia. The temps were warm for the first 2 days although winds at times gusted to 50 m.p.h. Our judges, Jack Murphy from Nowata, OK, Mark Johnson from Winnebago, IL and Mike Hester from Mebane, NC braved many windy hours in the saddle to deliver the winner, 2010 NGDC Celebrations Two Of Hearts from the fourth brace. I wonder if the make-up of that lone golden tree that makes it stand out among all the others in the hedgerow bordering Hire s field is comparable to the qualities that make a dog stand out to win the GDN? The judges told me that this year s standout just flowed so nicely around the course. Repeat time runner up Sniksoh Sally came from brace 27. 3rd place finisher, Hope s Carolina Sunshine, came from the first brace and last, but certainly not least is 4th place Hit s All Jack d Up, from the 7th brace. (details to follow) We d like to thank our corporate sponsors Purina and Tritronics. Tritronics hosted a Chinese dinner on Thursday and the Magnum s Masked Man painting was awarded to last year s winner Snikosh Sally handled by Bob Burchett and owned by Phil and Louise Corlew. There was a changing of the guard so to speak this year and there were many faces missed. New 4th VP Jim Carter and his committees did a terrific job in bringing it all together. He had the help of Diana Kubitz taking charge of hospitality. New grand course marshal Chuck Schaefer kept everyone where they were supposed to be, Chuck and Theda Langstaff were invaluable in taking charge of the dog wagon and Will Langstaff was back as the wrangler. Champion Celebrations Two of Hearts Deuce O/Paul & Phyllis Katzel, H/ Paul Deuce is litter mate to the 2010 National Open All Age Champion. What a litter! Deuce ran the entire brace hard, with wide range and handily smoothly for Paul. Deuce had a find at the far end of Hires field. Paul climbed the fence to flush the birds, but had to climb back over, as it turned out the birds were only a few feet in front of the dog. He held strongly and tightly the whole time during this flushing attempt. Deuce worked the course handling all the natural edges working together as a team with Paul. He finished strong and ended the brace in the middle of the shot gun field. Runner-up Sniksoh Sally Sally O/Phil & Louise Corlew H/Bob Burchett The breakaway was mid-way through the shang-ra-la. Sally handled with ease for Bob showing herself in the right places staying in touch with her handler. Coming down out of Shangri-La both she took to the front hit the left hand edge of the big field and was rimming it when she slammed point mid way at 44. She continued to work kindly for Bob. Horseback riders were encountered twice in this brace. At 44 Sally had her only very nice find. She was gathered up and taken across the Sessions Creek crossing to end the brace. 3rd place finisher Hope s Carolina Sunshine, Sonny, O/Bill Applegate, H/Judy Kiracofe Sonny broke well and forward. At 20 Sonny had a multiple bird find at the end of the hedgerow as you cut into Hire s field. Sonny handled well hanging edges yet on occasion losing touch with Judy for short periods. He slowed some in the middle, but gathered momentum at the end to have a second find just before the creek crossing. He finished strong with a forward cast heading into the orchard. 4th place finisher Hit s All Jacked Up Cruise O/ Joe Sikorski and Claire Ricci, Deer were seen at the top of the hill of the breakaway just as dogs were released, but neither chased. At 7 Cruise had his first find on a right hand finger. Cruise required a lot of handling making some showy casts throughout his brace. He was carded with his second find at 18. Heading down the hill towards the boy scout bridge Cruise locked up at 29. with his brace mate coming in for the back. This was a classic piece of bird work and a pleasure to watch. After being released the horserace was on. Cruise took off up with his brace mate towards the top of the derby course requiring their handlers to go get them. After being gathered and crossing the creek Cruise had shortened a bit ending his hour. The Running Brace 1-- Hope s Carolina Sunshine, Sonny, O/Bill Applegate, H/Judy Kiracofe (reported earlier) & Rico s Hi-Proof Bootletgger, Mason, O/ Chuck & Jill Schaefer, H/Bob Burchett Sonny reported earlier. Mason broke well forward making a nice cast to the right. Mason s brace mate had a find in a 17

20 cut at the top leading to Hire s field. Mason had gotten a little wide left and came through just after and one of the birds that had been flushed and Mason couldn t resist. Brace 2 Jeter III, Jeter O/Mike Blondin, H/Ben Lorenson & Scirocco DelPrado, Rico O/Leslie & Donna Casselberry, H/Les They broke away into the orchard hunting it well breaking out to take the left edge of the shotgun field. Jeter was out of sight, but popped in from the right. Both dogs had a lot of speed and front running. They crossed past the stand of oaks and up the hill to the front. Both were gathered to make the dyke crossing. Jeter shot up the shoot to the right heading to Shangri-La with handlers to the left. Scout called point for Jeter at the end of the shoot at 17 with the find being all in order. Rico was on point at 22 to the left after going up the hill with Jeter being whoa d to a back. Rico was relocated with no bird being produced. Jeter had a second find up on the top. Rico was to go bird less Brace 3-- Bye and W-Haven Moose & Dixie s Kim, Kim O/Phil & Louise Corlew, H/Bob Burchett Kim ran alone as her brace mate had come in season. Unfortunately, the dreaded rain had showed up for this brace. She ran well and handled kindly. She took a nice right edge in the big field before Sessions creek crossing. However, her brace ended with Kim going bird less. Brace 4-- Hybrittin s BJ Betty, Betty O/Art & Judy Cohen, H/Kyle Merrill and Celebrations Two of Hearts Deuce O/Paul & Phyllis Katzel, H/ Paul (reported earlier). Betty ran hard and big. She rimmed the entire left edge of Hires field. We became separated at this time, but judges confirmed that Betty was laying down a nice ground race. Unfortunately, she was picked up after the wet crossing heading to the left of the gun dog parking lot for pressuring a bird Brace 5 Sgt s Smoky Mtn Moonshine, Jack O/H Sandy Sargent and RC s Ruff Ranger Ruff O/Carol & Rob Richter, H/ Rob The breakaway was in the middle of the shotgun range field. Both dogs worked the stand of oaks and then headed up the left side. Jack had a find 24 on the right at the top of Shangri-La. He handled well hunting all the correct places, but his run was a tad off today. Ruff was the bigger running of the two and got stronger as the brace went on, but unfortunately, went bird less. Brace 6 -- Rocklan s Whizzle Stop Whizzy H/Bob Burchett and Bluerock s Diamond Girl Diamond, O/John & Joanne Perry, H/John Both dogs started strong with Diamond crossing back in front of John and Whizzy digging into the woods to left. Whizzy maintained the stamina as the brace progressed with Diamond shortening up. The strong winds seemed to affect both dogs as they came off edges patterning into the fields. Unfortunately, both dogs went bird less, Posted dogs: Hope s Carolina Sunshine & Celebrations Two of Hearts Day Two, Wednesday was sunny with not a cloud in the sky, but extremely windy Race 7--Hit s All Jacked Up Cruise O/ Joe Sikorski and Claire Ricci, H/Joe (reported earlier) and Harrises Princess Leia Leia Deer were seen at the top of the hill of the breakaway just as dogs were released, but neither chased. Leia was a little bit renegade at the start, but settled in after a bit. At 25 point was called for her where she was spotted far down the right finger of the hedgerow that separates Hire s field. A black cat was flushed. Heading down the hill towards the boy scout bridge the brace mate was locked up at 29 and Leia came in to back. This was a classy piece of work and a pleasure to watch. After being released the horserace was on. After they crossed the bridge heading towards the next creek crossing, both dogs took off up towards the top of the derby course requiring their handlers to go get them. After crossing the creek Leia made a nice strong cast to the left with lots of gas left in the tank. Brace 8--Clyde s Eleets-Sassy Kate KT, O/H Steve McClure and Casco Bay Jasper Jasper, O/H Pete Mazzaglia Both dogs broke left as they started into the shotgun range field with Jasper winning the race. Dropping down the hill to the stand of oaks Jasper went on point with KT coming in for the back. Upon release both worked towards the dyke hunting the woods to the right. After investigating the dead deer on the hillside leading to Shangri-La, Jasper quartered in front until point was called at 19 for his second find. KT continued to hunt all the right places with a few nice licks. However, she wasn t pleasing her handler and at 50 she was picked up. Jasper was also leashed at 52. Brace 9--Savannah s Hot Shot Bammer O/ Sherri Hudson, H/ Ben Lorenson & Diamond Hill She s Gone Cleo O/ Paul & Lisa Pollock, H/Lisa Breakaway in the middle of the Shangri-La. Both dogs were running with speed at the top even though the course tightens up. After coming down Shangri-La hill and getting to the spot beyond the dyke where it opens, both rimmed the field to the left. Cleo crossed in front first and went on point on the right edge. Bammer elected not to honor and as the birds went Cleo had had enough and went with them. Brace 10 Hit s Along for the Ride Ellie O/Ralph & Judy Kiracofe, H/ Judy Knine s Ghost Rider, Maverick O/Andre Columbe H/Brian Riggle Winds were extremely strong making it difficult for handler and dog to stay in touch. As Ellie entered Hire s field she wasn t pleasing he handler and at 13 Judy elected to pick her up. Maverick was out of sight coming through Hire s field and was found at 18 on point at the right edge by the horse barn field. He handled his birds well. Upon release he would take a lick and then check back in with the handler. After the boy scout bridge crossing at 40 he was leashed. Brace 11 Coveyrise Flyboy Jet O/ Bruce & Karen Kiracofe, H/ Bruce (and my personal hero of the stake) & Rovan s Rock Ridge Rt. Ascend Cender O/H Phil Bogdanovitch Breakaway was at the end of the derby course. This brace never really got going as the dogs kept coming together and at 23 Bruce picked Jet up. While this was happening Cender was busy camouflaging herself in a mud puddle before the dyke crossing. She handled closely and never really seemed to fire. She made the hour--bird less. Brace 12 One Off Mojito Mike Mike O/Patti Hunt, H/Kyle Merrill & Hit s for Pete s Sake Petey O/Ralph & Judy Kiracofe, H/Judy The breakaway was mid Shangri-La. These two started out running extremely comparable and competitively. At 17 point was called on the left edge for Mike. Unfortunately, Petey failed to honor. After a lengthy relocation a non-productive was carded. Dropping down on the backside of the lake, Mike swung the whole left edge, crossing the front and working the right edge. A covey was later ridden up in the middle of the two track. At 55 heading up Cardiac hill Mike jumped into the woods on the right and worked his way unseen to pop out to the front. At 55 he slammed on point on the right edge. It was a rabbit! Mike was taken on and finished strongly. Thursday, The weather was colder and not nearly as windy. The horseback gallery was light with the dog wagon full. Brace 13 Rovan s Hurricane Hannah Hannah O/Ivan & Ronnie Clark (scratched) & Oz II Oz O/Jon & Allison Cotton, H/Bob Burchett After a health incident sidelined John, Bob Burchett thankfully stepped in at the last minute to run Oz. Point was called on the right hand edge on the backside of Hire s field with the scout riding up birds. He was relocated, but nothing was produced. He had a nice race going heading down the right edge leading to the gap into Hire s field with point being called at the end. He was relocated, bird popped and ultimately he got picked up. Brace 14 Sweetwater Billy Tucker Tucker O/Larry & Sue Bates, H/Larry and Piney Run Hank Hank, O/Rob Donahue H/Ben Lorenson The breakaway was into the gap at Hire s field. Hank got wide left and he had to be persuaded away from the dead raccoon that captured a lot of dogs attention. This set the tempo for him. After he got straightened out he ran the left edge and at the gap of the hedgerow dividing the two fields he had a find at 2. Tucker also crossed in front and both worked the right edge. At 8 point was called far to the right for Hank, which he handled expertly. Tucker carded his first find at 9-1/2. As they headed across the field heading towards the hill, Hank worked wide right. Tucker stopped and a bird flushed in front of him for his second piece of bird work. Hank looped back while Tucker worked the left edge after the boy scout bridge. Hank caught the front way in front of his handler. The last he was seen was heading down a shoot straight for the snowmobile parking lot. The tracker was eventually called for. After the wet crossing Tucker had a stop to flush. Tucker methodically worked his way to the orchard hunting all the obvious places. He was rewarded with another find on the right perpendicular edge leading to the shotgun range. He had his final find at the stand of oaks after Larry had relocated him. Brace 15-- Chip s Tailgate Rendezvous Gus O/H Mike Poehler and Hit s Showtime Brandy O/John & Joanne Perry, H/ John The breakaway was up the hill towards Shangri-La. Brandy had her running shoes on and handled fairly well for John. She had two finds with one being along a stand of trees to the left after the first field at the top of Shangri-La. Gus worked all the right places, but as 18

21 young dogs will do, he had an indiscretion on a find and was picked up. Posted Dogs: Hit s Showtime and Sir Sunrise Winsalot Friday Brace 16 Sir Sunrise Winsalot Blue O/David Medford H/Ben Lorenson Bulloch s First in Line Alvin Alvin O/John & Terra Bulloch, H/ Terra At 5-1/2 a divided find was carded just to the right of the two track. Blue worked the right edge of the back side of Hire s field and went on point towards the end. Alvin was working the opposite side of the hedgerow. He came back through cut, but failed to honor. Blue was flowing and consistent throughout the brace finishing up in the orchard. Brace 17 High Hope s Bly by Nite Zoey O/Al & Cindy Cropek, H/ Al & Covey Rise s Rambo JR JR O/Chuck & Jill Schaefer H/Chuck Zoey The breakaway was into the shotgun range field. Both worked together down to the stand of the oaks working the left and then the right side towards the dyke crossing. Both had to be sweet talked into heading up the hill to Shangri-La. Zoey runs with a nice snappy gate. At 22 JR stopped and had a find to the right at the top of the hill. Point was called at 26 for Zoey on the right of one of the little hills on the top course, but it turned into a non-productive. JR had another point by the culvert half way through the top course. He was relocated with no bird being raised, but just after Chuck got on the horse, JR stopped again on the right. This time a bird was put to flight. At 40 Zoey went on point at the far end of a left hedgerow. After a failed relocation attempt, handler elected to pick-up for the 2nd non-productive. Brace 18 Jayhawker s Running Down A Dream Tilly O/Carl & Kristi Anglen, H/Bob Burchett & Coveyrise This Budz 4- U, Bud O/Bruce & Karen Conover, H/ Bruce The breakaway was heading towards the end of Shangri-La. Bud had his wheels on and was out of pocket. Bruce had to call for the tracker after coming down the hill behind the lake. Tilly was slow to get going and worked fairly close to the two track. She had one non-productive off to the side and unfortunately had a second one to the right of the field after coming down cardiac hill across from the new fence. Brace 19 Rovan s Rock Ridge Win Jammer Jammer & Foster s Buddy II Buddy O/H Gordon Foster. Jammer had a non-productive at the right of the two track up the hill from the breakaway. Buddy also had a non-productive in a clump heading up the back side of Hire s field. Buddy had another find along the hedgerow separating into Hire s field. Jammer failed to back. Buddy had a find to the left half way down Hire s field. Then far left at the end he had another relocated non-productive with the judges suspecting deer. Buddy had another find heading down the hill to the right of the road in an unlikely spot in the field. He was relocated and slammed on point. A single bird popped out in the tall grass. A buck lifted from the far right corner. Buddy went on point in the corner towards where the deer flushed. He was relocated, but another non-productive to end his bid. He was very enjoyable to watch. Brace 20 Coos Riglee Riglee O/Tom Ettinger H/Kyle Merrill & Ginjac s Heating It Up Cajun O/Jeff Currier & Jeanne Rozowski, H/ Jeff The breakaway was heading towards cardiac hill. After the boy scout bridge crossing in the derby course Riglee had a find in the left hedgerow with Cajun backing. Heading down to the wet crossing, Riglee went on point on the right, Cajun was carded with a fail to back and was leashed. Riglee got wide left, but Kyle got him back to hunt the orchard. At the fence line to the left of the cut into the shotgun range field Riglee carded his third find. Upon release he patterned down to the row of oaks. Kyle sent him back to hunt the whole line. He was out of sight for a time and scout called point on the perpendicular line. Once released, he went 30 feet and went on point again. Riglee worked his edges methodically and was still working strong on the far right edge finishing his brace. Brace 21 Wrigley s Revved Up Cub Turbo O/Barry & Petra Steinmetz H/ Barry & Delane s Speak of the Devil Charlie O/H Dan Riedl The breakaway was up in Shangri-La. Both dogs broke strong to the front. Turbo pointed on the same edge that Brandy had earlier in the day up in Shangri-La. He held through the first few birds flushing, but couldn t resist the temptation, as this was the biggest grouping of birds seen so far in the stake. While the birdwork was going on for Turbo, Charlie made a wide left cast. He took perpendicular edges and would come back in to Dan. At 30, Dan elected to pick him up. Brace 22 Blockade Runner Rusty O/Sebastian Ventura H/Ben Lorenson & Upland Acres Overland Express Zip O/Tom & Gretchen Burroughs H/ Bob Burchett This brace started out at a fairly fast clip. Rusty worked the left edge while Zip the right, as they paralleled the edge on the backside of Hire s field. Point was called for Zip at 9 with a small indiscretion ending his time. Rusty got sticky in the far corner that had been attracting dogs to a dead raccoon all week. As Ben got him forward working the left edge, Rusty had a find at 11-1/2 on a single. He often worked independently, yet Ben was always able to gather him up. Rusty had another find at 32 heading down the hill to the right before the boy scout bridge. After crossing the bridge he had a multiple bird find directly to the right of the two track. Although all was in order, handler elected to pick him up as he was not pleasing him. Brace 23 Buck s Hit the Road Jack Jack O/Ralph & Judy Kiracofe H/ Judy & Jazz s Sweetest Little Secret Caro O/Gil & Jane Hopper, Chuck & Jill Schaefer, H/Gil This brace broke into the derby course heading towards the wet crossing. Both started a little slow, but picked up as time went on. Heading down the field along the gun dog parking lot Jack got a hair up his old butt and headed wide left towards the swamp. Ralph was able to get him back in to work the left edge through the orchard, but he opened up again going through the shotgun range course. Caro was handling closer quartering in front of Gil through the orchard. She too opened up going through the shotgun range field and point was called for her at 23 far along the left edge past the stand of oaks. She was a long way from the handler and moved herself up before handler could reach her pointing again in the middle of the filed. She had the birds pinned and was holding steady as Gil approached. All was in order. Both dogs worked the edges leading to the dyke crossing and Caro caught the front, as both dogs headed up the hill to Shangri-La. She s a snappy little runner and took a nice lick around one of the fields on top stopping to say hello to a couple horse back riders. She was rewarded with her second find at 45. Jack was working well and took an awesome cast down the left edge of a long field. He didn t have the speed of youngster yet he never came off the edge. He showed the heart and guts that made him a former national gun dog champion. Too bad he went bird less. Brace 24 Peter Gunn Pete O/Jim & Drew Carter, H/ Jim & Diamond Hill Dangerous Man Trace O/Paul & Lisa Pollock H/Lisa This brace broke away in the middle of Shangri-La. The gallery pressed hard to watch last years 2x winner and they weren t disappointed. At 2 Pete had a find in the left hedgerow where dogs had been having finds all week. He handled it with style and was moved on while Trace was working to the front. At 7-1/2 Pete pointed again to the left. He had to be relocated, but the result was a non-productive. He caught the front heading down the hill. Trace got into some water and then built up a head of steam. He was out of pocket at the top before heading back down towards the lake, but he caught the front quickly and both dogs rimmed the left edge of the big field. They traded the lead many times as both dogs worked hard and strong. Pete was ahead at the top of a hill at 30 and pointed into the right side hedgerow. Trace came up the hill onto the situation and backed. All was in order for both dogs. Both dogs worked far right before along the big fields. As they headed through the field heading to Sessions creek crossing Trace was the bigger reaching dog. While Pete took the short route along the two track to the creek crossing, Trace swung wide right rimming the whole right edge mimicking the move that helped make Pete the champion last year. The difference being that Trace made his way over the creek crossing by going via the woods and swamp rather than over the bridge. This was a move that impressed everyone. At 44 to the right side leading into the derby course Trace locked up on a suspected rabbit. After coming down cardiac hill Pete worked wide right and at 57 point was called for a barely discernable orange collar peaking out Unfortunately, it was his second non-productive. Trace finished the hour extremely strong. Posted Dogs: Coos Riglee and Jazz s Sweetest Little Secret Saturday Brace 25-- Derailed Teddy O/Al & Cindy Cropek, H/ Cindy & Star s Dixie Pearl Dixie O/Mark Bennetech H/Kyle Merrill The last morning broke gray and damp. Ted and Dixie broke strong and after the top of the hill from the breakaway ran wide right. Ted returned and worked strongly along the back side of the hedgerow that borders Hire s field. He crossed over and worked the mott of trees and then the left. He was rewarded with point being called at 15. Simultaneously, point was called for Dixie who hadn t been seen for quite a while. She was found standing in the far right corner along the hedgerow 19

22 that runs perpendicular across Hire s field. After a lengthy flushing attempt, Ted was relocated, but ended with a non-productive. A shot was fired for Dixie. At 30 point was called again for Dixie way far to the right past the apple tree. All was in order. Both dogs worked hard and strong, but late in the brace they unsuccessfully wanted the same bird. Brace 26 High Hope s Little Ann Annie O/H Dan Riedl & Spring Hill Pancho DelPrado Pancho O/Steve & Mary Lauterbach, H/ Steve The breakaway was into the orchard. Annie is a snappy little thing who worked the orchard well as did Pancho, with Pancho being the bigger runner of the two. Heading down the hill to the stand of oaks Pancho was out of pocket and Annie worked the oaks hedgerow to result in a find. Pancho returned to judgment and both were taken across the dyke and up into Shangri-La. At 29 Annie was pointing in the two track and when we rode up, Pancho was on the leash. Annie s subsequent relocation resulted in a non-productive. Taken forward she worked spritely and was making a nice move along a left woods edge when she slammed onto point. In his flushing attempt the handler took down a small tree much to the amusement of the gallery. Unfortunately, this also resulted in her second non-productive and Annie was leashed. Brace 27--Just A Puff of Smoke Smoke O/Tom Ettinger, H/ Kyle Merrill & Sniksoh Sally Sally O/Phil & Louise Corlew H/Bob Burchett (reported earlier) Breakaway was mid-way through the Shangri-La. Smoke started strongly, albeit out of pocket at times. She settled in and worked forward for Ben most of the brace and was still working strong at 55 taking the far right edge before Sessions Creek crossing. Unfortunately, she was to go bird less. Brace 28 Kinwashkly French Velour Val Leslie Andreas & Bye. This final brace broke away by the new fence heading back after coming down from cardiac hill. Val was directionally challenged momentarily, but straightened herself out and took the whole right edge ducking inside the woods edge popping way to the front. She apparently likes to jump into the woods. Before heading to the bridge crossing she had a stop to flush at 15 with another bird popping as Leslie went to fire. Val worked strong checking hedgerows back onto course on. The temperature rose to the mid 90 s, and as one would expect with temperatures like that and no breeze, there was not a lot of bird work. The thick cover also did not help the scenting conditions. The dogs worked the best they could and few came up with very nice finds. As much as the hot temperatures did not help on Friday, neither did the weather change to 65 degrees and mist on Saturday! Many dogs in the Open Gun Dog went birdless. The Open Puppy stake was run on the All Age course and we saw lots of promise in most of the entries. Sunday the temperatures were back in the 90 s. There was more bird work in the Amt. Gun Dog, but again little for the Open All Age and the Open Derby. All the dogs that found bird work had to really dig in the trees and find where the birds had moved to. Many were ridden up by the gallery, which is sure not where they were planted, nor where the dogs would ve been looking for them! All in all, it was a great weekend for the dogs who were able to overcome the conditions, and it was a learning process for the rest of us! Thank you to everyone in the club and outside our club who helped us stay on time, getting birds planted, driving the dog wagon and judging. And as always, thank you to Ernie Peters for cooking, and Joan, we sure missed your smiling face this time and look forward to seeing you at the next trial! We would say to the Ontario man that there are various places in which a dog may be buried. We are thinking now of a setter, whose coat was flame in the sunshine, and who, so far as we are aware, never entertained a mean or unworthy thought. This setter is buried beneath a cherry tree, under four feet of garden loam, and at its proper season the cherry strews petals on the green lawn of his grave. Beneath a cherry tree, or an apple, or any flowering shrub is an excellent place to bury a good dog. Beneath such trees, such shrubs, he slept in the drowsy summer, or gnawed at a flavorous bone, or lifted head to challenge some strange intruder. These are good places, in life or in death. Yet it is a small matter. For if the dog be well remembered, if sometimes he leaps through your dreams actual as in life, eyes kindling, laughing, begging, it matters not at all where the dog sleeps. On a hill where the wind is unrebuked, and the trees are roaring, or beside a stream he knew in puppyhood, or somewhere in the flatness of a pasture land where most exhilarating cattle graze. It is all one to the dog, and all one to you and nothing is gained, and nothing lost--if memory lives. But there is one best place to bury a dog. If you bury him in this spot, he will come to you when you call--come to you over the grim, dim frontiers of death, and down the well-remembered path, and to your side again. And though you call a dozen living dogs to heel they shall not growl at him, nor resent his coming, for he belongs there. People may scoff at you, who see no lightest blade of grass bent by his footfall, who hear no whimper, people who may never really have had a dog. Smile at them, for you shall know something that is hidden from them, and which is well worth the knowing. The one best place to bury a good dog is in the heart of his master. 30 In addition to being a proud and enthusiastic gun dog, Daisy is now (almost) a competent house dog. I think the early emphasis on hunter training delayed the development of her social skills, but she has overcome that late-bloomer label, and become a joy. She comes when called, eats politely, uses the doggy door for personal hygiene, and is social to others in the house. She barks if someone rings the doorbell, and accepts a quietly observant position when I tell her that the intruder is actually a friendly visitor. There are still some areas that we haven t quite conquered, such as the groans and small screams that she elicited when she bounded thru the doggy door with the halfdead rabbit in the middle of Virginia s Circle of Friends Evening. Well, yes, she did take it back outside, but it was a definite disruption to the tone of the evening and something the Friends are unlikely to forget. She rides with me and is totally off-leash in the homes with the foster children. She snuggles into the foot of the bed with the little ones and then leaves when they fall asleep. She sits cuddled up to the youngster talking about the difficulties in his birth home and how he is afraid to go back. She enjoys the conspiratorial taste of pizza on Friday evenings when the house celebrates a birthday, and she is always an attentive listener to the youngster who is reciting his multiplication tables or practicing his spelling words. As I have watched the development of my Brittanys into canines able to multi-task, and be comfortable in a variety of settings, I have become increasingly convinced that this is a perfect breed for the therapist who wants to grow into Animal-Assisted Therapy. Brittanys are a medium-sized dog, pleasant, always up for a game of tag or catch, healthy, observant, and easy-toclean. They want a job. Sequel- Daisy by Mr. John E. Shirley I think that their wonderful hunter instincts also make them really observant of their families. Whether it s pheneromes or simply reading body language, Bungee and Daisy frequently single out the sad or the lonely or the worried before my therapist eyes and ears do. They, of course are not concerned with why or when the trauma occurred, just the awful presentness of sadness, or fear, or worry, or anger. We have clearly defined roles in the therapy session. It s my job to delve into the emotional history. It s my job to help the foster child build positive self-control and skills to become a more functional person. Their job is to break through that horrible frozen-in-time state of abused children. The consolation of a canine kiss seems to thaw little hearts and minds, while the child is involved in holding and petting the canine helper. Difficult discussions are not as threatening when you have a furry friend sitting with you. In addition to her therapy-dog job, Daisy has birthed two grand litters, full of life and energy. The older group is well-advanced in their gun-dog training, and the younger litter is very busy trying to learn socialization and manners. I have decided that as we continue this adventure, the next phase is the vocational training of the puppies. All pups are evaluated twice between 3 and 7 months as to their interest and aptitude to become hunters. That is first. Anyone who doesn t make the initial cut is entered into house dog 101 Canine Good Citizen training. Since we are blessed to live in the South, we refer to this part as Charm School. After they have had a bit more time to mature, they are once again tested for hunter training., and go on to either hunter or house dog 102 training. Puppies are occasionally placed in foster homes where they become part of the busy life of a foster family. Although foster children are not responsible for the CGC training, they do help.with feeding, grooming, and exercising, lots of exercising. My plan is that after the pups pass the Canine Good Citizen level, they will start working and living with therapists. I generally find that individuals who love foster children are open to loving a pup, and they firmly believe that everyone, puppies included, need job skills. The next step, after the CGC, is, for at least some, the attainment of Therapy Dog status, which will allow them to be insured on their forays into nursing homes, hospitals, and senior citizen centers. Great hunters, therapy dogs, babysitters, and best of all, companions as we journey onward; I really think that s the key attribute of the Brittanys. They fit in. I am still a little unnerved when Bungee and Daisy just look at me and do what I was thinking of telling them,.am I that predictable, or can they actually tune in on some mysterious alphawave and read my thoughts? I am a really good therapist with a wealth of experience and a great knowledge base. I help children and adults change their lives. It is rewarding and I am thankful. My Brittanys have opened up an entirely new world of learning for me. Vaccinations and heartworm treatment, temperament testing, collars with engraved nameplates, electronic gates so that cars can come and go and dogs cannot; these are my new areas of learning...and it is a worthwhile investment of my time and energies. The Brittanys are more than a tool for my therapy practice. They are my co-workers, and my friends. I highly recommend the Brittany as a great investment in the power of warm fur to improve life. 38 American Brittany Club Futurities CONDITIONS AND RULES American Brittany Futurities shall be open to every purebred Brittany bitch and her progeny whelped during the calendar year of January 1 - December 31 and whose litters have been enrolled with The American Brittany Club. Bitch must be owned or leased by an American Brittany club member. All dams nominated and all sires bred to must be registered or eligible for registration. Nominations of dams must be made within 30 days after the bitches have whelped. A sum of $30.00 must be paid at this time. This payment will entitle each puppy of this particular litter to be entered in the ABC Futurities (Field and/or Bench) after the dog has been properly registered in a recognized stud book. THE AMERICAN BRITTANY CLUB 64th ANNUAL FIELD & 49th ANNUAL SHOW FUTURITY Trial and Show to be run Spring of 2012 For all purebred Brittany bitches whelping a litter on January 1 thru December 31st, 2010, who are owned or leased by a member of The American Brittany Club. Nomination must be made within 30 days of whelping or subject to a late penalty fees NOMINATING FEE: $30.00 PURSE: 2/3 to Owner of Winner, 1/3 to Breeder of Winner NAME OF BITCH (must be owned by ABC member) Late litter nominations will be accepted with the following current fee schedule: Late fees are: $30.00 for days, $60.00 for days, and $ for any nomination received more than 90 days after whelping. No nominations will be accepted past 180 days of whelping. Additional late fees may be imposed from time to time by the ABC Board of Directors. The postmark will determine the fee for late nominations. Dogs will be eligible to run in the designated futurity to be held in the Spring of the second year following the year of whelping.
