1 NSC rescue - rehabilitate - rehome Halloween Party The 14 th Annual Clearwater Halloween Party, to benefit NSC Rescue, is swiftly approaching, and we d love to see a record turn-out. This is our big push to get us financially through the year, and we would like to take a moment to highlight some of the amazing accomplishments we ve been able to achieve. As of August, we had found homes for over 300 animals, and this year alone we are rapidly reaching the 150+ mark. Without the funds and participation from the Halloween party, our efforts in the coming year will be significantly curtailed. Kittens Issue #10 Fall 2009 While NSC has primarily been a dog focused rescue this year we have processed a record number of cats and kittens as other shelters became full and faced euthanizing little ones to make more space. As of this newsletter, we have three litters of kittens about to become available. Check out our website for photos and information regarding adoption. Several of our little ones will be reaching 8 weeks, and would love a new forever home with a family that loves them. This year s event will be held Saturday, October 24, 2009 from 11:00 a.m. 1:00 p.m. We would encourage you to come out and bring your neighbors and animal loving friends for this event. The party is open to the public with free admission; donations are happily accepted and your donations are tax deductible. As with prior years, there will be a costume contest with fabulous prizes, a silent auction, and our celebrity MC W. Bruce Cameron, is expected back in attendance. In addition, this year we will have more vendors, including craft vendors, a dog painting station, and professional photography to name a few. We could use extra volunteers to help set-up and break down the event. To find more ways you can help please contact Edie, our new Volunteer Coordinator at Edie@NSCrescue.org. Please see the enclosed flyer for more information or visit our website at www. NSCrescue.org. Foster Families Needed We would like to take a moment to thank every single person who helped spread the word, volunteer their time, drive, and foster the rash of death row dogs we ve seen come through our doors this summer. While we would like to anticipate that the need will decrease, with the current market and number of strays being processed and left unclaimed at municipal shelters, we expect that the pleas will continue. If you could potentially foster a dog or cat, please Georgia@NSCrescue.org with your specifications (female, small breed, puppy, etc.). We are currently trying to make a database of such volunteers so that when we get word of animals facing euthanasia, we can quickly and more efficiently move them to new homes and off death row. This will also help streamline the process and hopefully allow more dogs and cats the opportunity at a second chance in life vs. the needle. Check us out at Successful Adoptions: 311
2 News Success Story Carlos, the purebred Chihuahua, was on death row at another shelter and had only hours to go before his time was up. After a plea was sent out, the Brauckmuller family contacted us about fostering when they saw an that had been forwarded. Little Carlos joined two beagles of the same color scheme, and within a week had won his family over and found a permanent place in their hearts. After barely escaping the needle, this little man is now a beloved part of a three dog family, and they call him Carlos the Wonder Dog for good reason. His story is remarkable in that one saved his life and found him that second chance with an adoring family he so much deserved. Gretchen s Goodies Bichon Bacon Bites Ingredients 3 cups whole wheat flour ½ cup milk 1 egg ¼ cup bacon fat (or vegetable oil) 1 tsp. garlic powder 3-4 slices bacon, crumbled up ½ cup cold water Directions Mix ingredients together thoroughly. Roll out on a floured surface to ¼ - ½ thick. Bake for minutes in a 325 oven. Cut into strips while warm and refrigerate. Memorials This year has been particularly difficult for many families as they have faced the loss of their beloved pets. It is particularly meaningful to us when our organization is chosen as a symbol of love and remembrance. At this time, we d like to express our condolences to the following: Annie Leona Lawrence Cheryl Siefert Rebecca McLeish Kathy Amundson Bijou Brodie Butch Caliape Crystal Kala Leona Lawrence Cheryl Siefert Steve & Cheryl Plutt Kathy Swanson Patricia Holley Dedications Mickey Nanuk Peanut Amber Allen Sherry Seymour Rudy Sam Mike & Gabrielle Allen Small Fry Tasheka Tucker Zipper Roger for 4 wonderful years of companionship Janice Jensen 2 Successful Adoptions: 311
3 Adoptable Pets These are some of the dogs currently in NSC s training program for adoption. For the most up-to-date listings, please check out our website at If you are interested in meeting any of these dogs, please contact Ginger at or Ginger@NSCrescue.org to schedule an appointment. All adoptions through NSC come with 4 weeks of training to facilitate the transition into a new home. Anya is a 6 year old purebred German Shepherd with AKC pedigree papers. She is housebroken, and has fairly extensive training in addition to general obedience. She is an owner relinquishment due to a divorce. She is a very good dog that is just looking for a second chance in life after this recent upheaval. She does well around dogs and seems to ignore cats. She is a real catch of a trained and beautiful dog. Baron is a 3 year old floppy eared German shepherd. He came to us from a shelter where his time was up. He is a bit shy but warming up to being in a foster home. He is a very mellow dog who does well with other dogs. Baron is crate trained, house trained, neutered and looking for a family where he can be adored. Jorey is a 7 month old blue heeler/shepherd mix that was pulled from death row out of state. He is a very rambunctious fellow who is all puppy kisses. He is house and crate trained and picking up on general obedience. He weighs approximately 45 pounds, is up-to-date on shots and is neutered, and really just looking for a family that would love a slightly older puppy to play with. He is good around other dogs and would love to play with you. Duchess is a 6 month old Belgian Malinois that was a transfer from another shelter. She is a very energetic puppy who will need a strong but compassionate owner to reel her in and stay committed to training. She can be a bit head strong, but is a real love bug and looking for life with someone who would never dream of just leaving her to the chances of fate. She will be on the small side for this breed (50 pounds as an adult) but so far is working on general obedience, crate and house training. Zack is a 4 year old shepherd mix that came to us from an overcrowded shelter. He is neutered, up-to-date on vaccinations, loves other dogs and really really really wants to be around people. He is a friendly guy looking for a second chance in life and deserves a home with a family that adores him as much as he will adore them. Amos was rescued from an area shelter with his mama and five litter mates. He is a black and white tuxedo kitten who is about 13 weeks old. Amos is a very active kitten and loves to play. All of the kittens and their mama came from the shelter with upper respiratory infections but are recovering nicely. He is up-to-date on vaccinations, and has been dewormed. Check us out at 3
4 Adoptable Pets Stryker is a 7 year old German shepherd that was found as a stray by a volunteer who knew he was a nice boy deserving of a good home. Stryker does well with other dogs and loves people. He does have a tendency to be an escape artist, so will need supervision while outside, especially at first. Stryker is on the smaller side for a male, weighing approximately 65 pounds. He is currently working on basic obedience training and is house trained. Josie and her kittens were rescued from an area shelter. She is very friendly and outgoing, and loves to be held and talked to. She has taken very good care of her babies and is very protective of them. She doesn t seem to be very fond of dogs; however, it may be more out of a sense of protection for the kittens. She is one of the sweetest cats I ve ever encountered. Contact Information NSC Post Office Box 1505 Wheat Ridge, CO Ginger Ginger@NSCrescue.org Gina Gina@NSCrescue.org Georgia@NSCrescue.org Edie Nicholls Edie@NSCrescue.org 4 Some of Our Kittens Canine Trivia Imprinted on some Greek money dating back to 36 B.C. is the image of a dog very similar to the Great Dane of today. The Great Dane is known as the Apollo of all dogs. In 407 A.D. the Dane was crossed with a Mastiff like dog and Irish Greyhounds, and the issue was the beautiful, large, thin, agile dog known today as the Great Dane. They are traditionally used as cart pullers and to hunt boar and bear. Nowadays, the Dane is best suited to a quiet life as a giant furniture ornament while they snooze on the couch. 5 Thank You So Much Thank You Thank you to everyone who donated their time, money and resources to helping NSC in its mission to help deserving dogs and cats at their attempts towards a second chance at life. Your contributions, volunteer hours, and compassionate caring of our shelter animals is the only reason we are still in existence. Our accomplishments would not have been possible without you! We are now on Twitter ( as well as on Facebook ( These electronic venues are giving us a great deal of exposure and have helped save multiple dogs and cats from being euthanized by getting the message out quickly. Please become followers and fans and then spread the word. The more people that see our updates, the greater the chances one more dog or cat will be saved from death row! Alternative Donation Options If you currently donate to NSC, we d like to encourage you to see if your company does corporate matching. We can provide any paperwork as necessary, and this additional financial boon can put us in the position to help even more animals in need. Other ways to donate include Cars Helping Charities and some of our upcoming events (including a microchipping clinic and the Clearwater Halloween Party). Thanks to everyone who helped donate, volunteer or stopped by our garage sale. It was a great mid-season fundraiser, and the turnout meant we were in a position to help with some dogs coming from the municipal shelter that had kennel cough as well as canine flu. They are now safely in new homes and successfully treated with medication. 5
