4 ABOUT MOSQUITOES GENERAL INFORMATION Did you know? The red bump and itching caused by a mosquito bite is actually an allergic reaction to the mosquito s saliva. Mosquitoes are common flying insects that constitute the family Culicidae. They are found around the world and measure an average of 1/8 to 3/4 in. There are about 170 different mosquito species in North America alone. Only the female mosquitoes bite as they need proteins to produce eggs. Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water or soft soil and feed on the blood of various kinds of hosts, mainly vertebrates, including mammals, birds, reptiles and humans. PROBOSCIS The mosquito mouthpart is used to pierce the skin and suck blood. It is also used to drink fluids rich in dissolved sugar, such as nectar and honeydew.
