2 JAR Pets of the Month: Mimi, Mini & Bonnie Mimi&Mini (top) and Lu Ya (bottom) Mimi & Mini (female cats) DOB: January 2011 (Mini) DOB: 2009 (Mimi) Mini looks very much like her mum Mimi! She has a very sweet nature, loves attention and lots of stroking. She is also quite talkative! Her and Mimi like to sleep together and always curl up together on the sofa. Ideally they would be adopted together. Mimi has adapted well to indoor living and does like company and attention. She loves to sit next to you on the sofa or lie at your feet. Mimi enjoys playing with toys too and is full of fun. Lu Ya (female dog) DOB: January 2009 Rescued as she was wandering the streets. A friendly dog towards people and other animals. Can you provide a forever loving home to Mimi & Mini or Lu Ya? Other pets that urgently need a home include: Monday (dog) Prince (cat) Antoine (dog) Milly (cat) An An (dog) Danny (cat) Adopt a dog or cat!! What does it cost to adopt an animal from JAR? One of the most common questions we are asked is "How much does it cost to adopt an animal from JAR?" Our response is this: There is no fixed price on any animal that is up for adoption. It is up to the discretion of the adopter if they would like to make a donation. However, with the growing increase of rescued animals and expenses an amount of at least 300 RMB given to the group when adopting an animal from us is greatly appreciated. Please note that JAR is a non-profit animal rescue group. We rely on donations from kind hearted individuals which are then in turn used for food, vaccinations, grooming, de-worming, defleaing, de-sexing, and transportation. Your understanding and support is much appreciated by the group and the animals. Page 2

4 Operation Catnip - A JAR TNR Diary (Suzhou) Sorry we haven t been in touch for a while but we have been busy. Since the summer break we have caught and neutered eight more cats. It has been a great start to the new season but we have many new kittens around prompting complaints from the management office of the compound again. We were never going to catch all the cats in our first year of TNR and so we did expect this downturn. We will get most of them this year we hope. Funds are always a problem; we really need to find yet more kind souls to help us financially as we are have much more work to do. We have fostered four tiny kittens abandoned by their Mums and are desperately looking for new homes for them, they are stunning babies, just bundles of fluff and fun. One of them had a nasty run in with a local dog and when he was found, he had infected bites and a couple of rather large holes in his abdomen. Our fantastic vet from Hago Pet Hospital saved the day again and Stitch (because he had so many) is doing really well. He will need a special family at his forever home as he is naturally still very jumpy but incredibly loving. 6 Service Project for JAR As part of a service project, some school children from WISS (Western International School Shanghai) decided to help out JAR through contributions and time. Contributions were collected by each member of the class earning money through recycling. For the most part, this earned a small amount of money but helped the children to understand the concept of recycling better. 7 We received queries for the following animals looking for a new home. Can you help? Please contact us shanghaidogs@gmail.com Calvin needs your help! This morning, a few minutes after my daughter left for the school, she called me and told me there is a dog which follow her and she was about to leave the compound and take the bus. I told her to wait for me as I was afraid the dog goes to the street and get lost forever. I caught the dog which seemed hopeless and scared. I asked people who were passing but no one knew him. A lady with a dog told me that she has seen him and the owner has left this place and they did not wanted their dog, so they left him by himself! He still has his collar on his neck with the name Cat King. I took him home but my dog did not accept him and kept barking at him and made him so afraid. I took him to the front gate and asked the guards to keep him so we find a solution. My daughter and I went to see him again, and I brought him food and water. I can't take him home and I am so afraid something bad happens to him. I don't know about his breed or age, all I know is that he was brought up in a home If you can provide a foster or permanent home for this lovely abandoned dog, please contact us! Rescue dog Foxy Foxy was rescued on October 18 th. This dog is about one year old, very sweet, enthusiastic and good listening. He was walking on the street, searching for a new home. The rescuer would love to keep it but will relocate to her home country soon. The dog is already listening to his new name: Foxy. If you want to give Foxy a new home, contact us ASAP. Many thanks in advance for your help! Husky looking for a new home This beautiful 8 months old Husky has spent all her life, so far, in a small cage at the back of a pet shop. She was rescued and fostered by a family which is currently looking for a permanent home now. Labrador Sony looking for a new home 'Sony's' date of birth is February He is pure bred with official kennel club papers, has a microchip implant, and all vaccinations up to date. He has a friendly demeanor, and loves to be with the kids. It would be great if she has the space she needs to run about. If you are willing to help and adopt and provide her a loving permanent home, please let us know! Thank you. Page 7

8 Zoo to ax links with pet trade SHANGHAI Zoo is to persuade a pet company to move out of the zoo grounds because of its sales strategy. A woman surnamed Zhong, who visited the zoo with her daughter, said she was shocked to see advertisements in the pet area, where more than 50 dog and cat breeds are exhibited, saying dog sales, prices open to discussion in person. Many people were uncomfortable to see the ads, said Zhong. A zoo is a place for people to get to know the animals, rather than for trading animals. Director of the unnamed company, a woman surnamed Xie, claimed they had many kinds of dogs bred from the animals displayed in the zoo, and zoo officials do not manage the dog trade. She also said that as the zoo does not allow people to take animals in or out of the grounds, the company has to hide the puppy in a small box if people want to buy. The company also offers free vaccines and ensures buyers can use the zoo s staff entrance, thus avoiding the need to buy tickets. The zoo said animal trading is banned, adding that the pet company s contract was not renewed at the end of last year because residents near the zoo complained about dogs barking. But the company has not left and has continued to trade. Zoo officials said they will ask the company to move out as soon as possible. Also yesterday, Ganji.com, a Chinese classified advertising site, was accused of promoting the trade in protected animals. Internet users found the website promoting the sale of protected birds, such as kestrels and golden pheasants. Kestrels are being offered for 600 Yuan (US$94). The Shanghai Wildlife Protection Center said it is in talks with the website, asking it to delete such information. The center officials, meanwhile, said it is hard for them to clamp down on the online wildlife trade. 10 OUR CHALLENGE Every year thousands of animals are abandoned in China. Just like in many other developing countries, this situation requires the attention and effort of several parties: government agencies, NGOs, NPOs and more importantly: YOU! Imagine how different this situation could be if more people were willing to open their homes to an abandoned pet, if more animals were vaccinated, neutered and spayed, if more people made donations, if more people were foster parents, if education on ethical treatment of animals could reach everybody We at JAR have a great task ahead of us, but we cannot do it alone WE NEED YOUR HELP!!!
