Helping PAWS Catapalooza By Scoop McCalla The cats and kittens of HPPR were eagerly anticipating their big day. All were busy grooming, primping and practicing their most appealing meows and enticing looks in hopes of snaring that perfect forever home. There were tiny kittens, bigger kittens, adult cats and senior cats. There were black cats, tabby cats, gray cats, yellow cats and tuxedo cats. But all of these adorable kitties had one thing in common: they were looking for love. And it wasn't just the cats who were busy. Helping PAWS volunteers were working as hard as their four legged colleagues: making and distributing posters, tidying up the adoption room, blowing up balloons and organizing the event. Saturday, September 9 th would be the big day. When the 9 th finally arrived, everyone was filled with excitement. Would the people come? Who would find homes? Fortunately, no one had long to wait. Families began to arrive early, and what started as a trickle soon became a flood. Volunteers Erika (pictured at above right), Suzanne, Melissa and Kaitlyn could barely keep up with the stream of kittyseeking folks who were eagerly looking to make the ideal love connection. Dr. Gretchen Gerber was busily advising adopters about the nutritional needs of their feline family members and photographing the happy new pet parents with their kitty companions. Time flew by and at the end of the day, the HPPR team was both thrilled and exhausted. Fifteen lucky kitties had found homes, including: Garrett, Gabby, Atticus, Buff Ermine, Gypsy, Diaphora, Sami Cynthia, Hazel, Cheeto, BBQ, Puffcorn, P.J., Butterscotch, Elephant Ear and Cream Puff. Seven of these kitties went home with U.S. Veterans as part of HPPR's Pets for Vets program in which our normal adoption fee is waived for current or former members of the military. Catapalooza was an overwhelming success, but for those kitty-lovers who missed it, fear not. The success of this event has ensured that there will be additional adoption events in the future. But why wait? There are many wonderful HPPR cats and kittens still looking for their forever homes, each one cuter and more loving than the last. Check out our website or stop by Helping PAWS and find a friend for life. (Cont d on page 2) 1

And the PAWparazzi Were At the Helping PAWS Catapalooza! BBQ & Popcorn settle in for a catnap during the event Gypsy and Diaphora moth, now Maxie and Junipurr, are settling into their furever home with their new favorite girls. Maxie is also pictured below. 3 Moth siblings were adopted by one of our military heroes! BBQ and Puffcorn are ready to head outta Dodge and to their Furever Home! Gabby is on her way to her new home! Clearly, trying to make that Love Connection is much harder work than it seems! 2

PAWSidential PAWdcast By Marley the Magnificent, PAWTUS Hello Everybody! It's me, Marley, with another Pawsidential report! First off, I should like to say a big WOOHOOO! for my sponsor pet Gabby, who has finally found her furever home! I guess my magic is still working a little. My remaining sponsor pet, Ebony, is still looking for her furever home and getting quite desperate to find one, especially since Helping Paws may be taking on some pets from the south to help out hurricane-filled shelters, and they must find room for more! Of course, Gabby being adopted means I get to choose another sponsor pet to go along with Ebony, so this time I have chosen Destinee (pictured here)! She is a beautiful black kitty (aren't we all beautiful?) who has had a disappointment and desperately needs a good furever home. She had been chosen once from HPPR but sadly the kitties in the home she went to would not allow her in, and she spent all her time alone. So she has come back to HPPR for another try. Hmm, I see by a glance at my to-do list that October has gone to the dogs. I am not happy about that, but I guess I will be a good sport! Before we get started, let me just say that I have heard that there are many reports circulating about me that claim I fell off the nip-wagon during September. I would like to utterly deny those reports! I am SOBER! I do not have a nip problem! It was not MY fault that my mom harvested the catnip plants last month and dried them and filled the nip jars. (oooh, dat homegrown nip is da best!) Now, on to my list! October is Adopt-A-Dog Month AND Adopt-a-Shelter Dog Month. I think the shelter dogs are the best ones! I have heard there are many, many dogs that now need homes after the hurricanes in Texas and Florida - some have even traveled up north and can be found at shelters in our areas! Goodness, October is a busy month! It is also National Animal Safety and Protection Month -a month dedicated to promoting the safe practices of handling and caring for both domestic and wild animals. Animals play an important part in our everyday lives, even if we don't personally have pets. So it's vital to make sure that they are treated kindly and with the respect and care they deserve. AND October is National Pit Bull Awareness Month - All dogs, regardless of breed, require responsible, loving caregivers. The National Pit Bull Awareness Campaign encourages responsible dog ownership to strengthen the crucial bond between dogs and their human companions. They are dedicated to working toward a time when no one has to face the loss of a beloved family member due to ignorance, fear and bias. Lastly, October is National Service Dog Month - a time designated to raising awareness and showing appreciation for the extraordinary work service animals do every day for the people in their care. National Service Dog Month honors these working dogs for making millions of lives better and safer. Here are some interesting facts about service dogs: It looks like October also has busy weeks! Let's see what there is. The 1st Week of October is National Walk Your Dog Week - this was created in 2010 to raise awareness for pet obesity, which is on the rise. Pet parents, did you know that close to 17 million dogs in the United States are overweight? That s more than 40% of all dogs in the US! What can you do to help both your health and the health of your beloved dog(s)? Commit to walking at least thirty minutes a day. Your heart, your dog and your veterinarian will thank you! And don t forget to sign up for Wooftrax so that Helping PAWS gets money each time you walk your dog with your cell phone! (Cont d on page 4) 3

PAWSidential PAWdcast (Cont d from Page 3) A thirty-minute walk every day will help you (and your dog) meet recommendations for heart healthy exercise. Remember to be safe when walking your dog -- Keep him or her on a leash or harness, unless you re in a safe, enclosed area, also make sure he has an identification tag or is microchipped. The week of Oct is National Veterinary Technician Week. Veterinary technicians are critical to the day-to-day function of veterinary practices, and play vital roles in preserving animal health and welfare. This holiday, first celebrated in 1993, takes place in the third week of October each year, and provides an opportunity to honor their commitment to compassionate, high-quality veterinary care for all animals. Wow! That's a lot of stuff already! Now for the individual days - I think I will furmat the list to save space: October 4: World Animal Day. This day is about making the world a better place for all animals. Oct. 12, 2016: National Pet Obesity Awareness Day. This one sort of ties in with the walk your dog week, I think. In addition to exercise, remember to feed your pets a quality diet, in proper amounts (my Mom likes to say "Feed the cat, not the bowl!) but limit treats (WHAT?! Horror!) - remember, a treat to a pet is like candy to a child. Unfortunately I am one of those pets that carries a bit of extra weight - I have tried to tell Mom that it is where I store my purrsonality, but she does not believe me. We have been undergoing a new food regime here at the Marley household and I am not sure I like it! We are not allowed to "free feed" anymore - horror! And we have to WORK for our food - even our treats! How awful is that?! Mom makes us hunt a toy before every meal - our favorite is a "worm" - really a fake caterpillar on a fishing pole - and Mom is very talented at making it move realistically so that we all forget it is a toy and end up pouncing and running and chasing it all over the house! Not until each of us has caught our prey at least once are we allowed to eat! It is terrible! :o But it is fun, and I am already feeling better but do not tell Mom that! Oct. 1: National Fire Pup Day. This day recognizes the canine firefighters that have long been members of fire departments across the country. While the Dalmation s origin is unknown, their use in firehouses began during the 1700s. Trained as a carriage dog, the Dalmatian s agility transferred quickly to horse-drawn fire engines. In the days of the horse-drawn fire carts, they provided a valuable service, having a natural affinity to horses. The Dalmatians would run alongside the horses, in front of or beneath the wagon axles and clear the way for safety. Long after the red engines replaced horse drawn wagons, the Dalmatian remains a recognizable tradition in fire stations across the country. They serve as firehouse mascots, educate the public about fire safety and represent past fire pups in honor of their heroism. Oct. 1: National Black Dog Day. Black Dog Syndrome is a phenomenon in which, for whatever reason, black dogs are passed over for adoption in favor of lighter-colored animals. Black dogs are more likely to be killed in shelters regardless of their breed. Some say it s because they look scary or angry, you can t read their expressions as easily as other colors, and it's harder to take a good photo of them. Of course all this holds for black cats as well, and we all know how WONDERFUL we black cats are! So if you're looking to adopt a dog - please consider one of the black pups waiting in shelters! They are just as loyal and loving as the others. October 15: Dog Film Festival, New York City. This is a celebration through film of the love between dogs, their peopleand the animal welfare groups that bring them together. Oct. 16: National Feral Cat Day. AT LAST A CAT DAY! It is about time (Cont d on page 5) we had something for us cats! National Feral Cat Day is all about raising awareness about feral cats, promoting Trap-Neuter-Return and recognizing the millions of compassionate Americans who care for them. 4

PAWSidential PAWdcast (Cont d from Page 4) Oct. 28, 2017: National Pit Bull Awareness Day. Hmm, we had a week at the start of the month, wasn't that enough? Now we have another day! Oct. 28: Plush Animal Lovers Day. A day that most dogs will be happy to celebrate as they unstuff them Oct. 29: National Cat Day. Cat day is the most popular holiday for cats that encourages adoption and breaks the internet with cuteness! Hmm, at least the month has ended propurrly! Oh, wait, there is one more day. Oct. 31: Halloween. This holiday is almost as feared by us pets as the 4th of July with all those exploding fireworks! Here are some tips to keep your pets safe this Halloween. 1. Do not give candy to your pets - those are for the kids that come to your door, not the pets in the house! Give us some propurr pet treats instead! 2. Make sure your decorations do not leave wires hanging where we pets can chew on them (we LOVE chewing wires! At least my brother Nicky and I do). Also something like a carved pumpkin with a candle in it could easily be knocked over by a scared pet and you would then have a fire in the house! 3. Be careful with the door! It is very easy for a pet to bolt outside when the door is opened during ordinary times, but when there are scary noises and strangers at the door, we become scared and can run the wrong way! The safest thing if you'll be opening your door for trick and treaters is to keep your pets in another room so they cannot escape. 4. Don't put costumes on your pets and dress them up unless they're used to such things. Most of us do not like wearing things, and can panic which could lead to choking or becoming tangled in costume ties. 5. Remember to keep collars with up-to-date ID tags on us! Also if you have not already done so, consider microchipping! I think I have run out of October things. Until next time, this is Marley, signing off! 7 Captured by the PAWparazzi! Lucy sent in this picture of herself with her Foster Mom and brother Bleu. I was all wet from a swim in the lake when I jumped onto FM s lap! Serves her right for letting Bleu sit next to her! Such sloth! proclaims Lucy. I don t know who is worse! Foster Dad or that ditsy redhead Lola! Both are lazy bums. I don t know why MY MOM is paying attention to my ditsy red-headed foster sister Lola. She should be lavishing all her attention on me instead of that wannabe huntress! For several days, Foster Mom and Foster Dad s home was invaded by these silly hairy creatures who claim to be wirehaired pointing Griffons. They went on a hunting trip with Foster Dad and Lola. (Cont d on page 8) 7

Captured by the PAWparazzi! (Cont d from Page 7) While in Kinvara, Ireland, the PAWparazzi captured a photo of this dog sleeping in the boot of his car. In East Gull Lake, MN, the PAWparazzi captured a photo of this hummer attacking the painted lady butterflies who liked the same pretty flowers. Ooooh, a PAWSent for da PAWTUS! And it has a catnip bubble on top of it I gotta get! Ahhh, this is living! PAWTUS takes a breather from his onerous PAWSidential duties. My brother Nicky, AKA the Galloping Galumpus. He just celebrated his birthday on September 17 and the Petcipes in this newsletter were made especially for his PAWty. Find Us on Facebook And here it is! A Cat Tree with my brothers Rummy and Nicky (the Galloping Galumpus) on it. 8

Our Wishlist Lord, What Fools These Mortals Be By THE Hastings, reporting from the Rainbow Bridge ImPAWSible as it seems, Mom and Dad think I can be replaced! Word has reached me that they have acquired a new kitten, a foolish little thing named Payson. I m sure my wonderful dad rebelled at the very idea, but he was no doubt beaten into submission by my less-thanwonderful mom. I mean, how sensible can a woman be who preferred my insipid sister Lily to me, The Hastings? That alone should tell you that she is a bit lacking in common sense! Lily was soooooooooo boring and quite foolish. Sure, she wrote some good articles for the newsletter, but they were all fiction and they can t hold a candle to my famous submissions! It even sounds like Mom is encouraging this foolish upstart to follow in my pawprints and run for PAWTUS next time around! Let s face it. Mom is a sexist, racist pig. Imagine thinking a GIRL could rule as PAWTUS! Sheesh, like that hairy little brat could ever hold a candle to me in the election, as whether Mom knows it or not, I plan to run from the Rainbow Bridge and rule over all from on high. And look at that face! Who would vote for that face? Some animals here at the Bridge say they are glad to see their parents move on and adopt another homeless animal to share their lives with. Not me. When you ve had the best, why bother with the rest? And make no mistake about it, I AM THE BEST! And this scruffy little ball of fluff they claim is a dilute calico Persian cat is obviously of mixed breed and moggie origins! I mean, she isn t even WHITE, but has some silly patches of grey on her. While only the BEST Persians are white or silvery white, who ever heard of a calico Persian? Such an ill-bred animal should be culled from the lineage so as not to taint it! When I am PAWTUS that will be the law of the land. Pfffffffffffffttttttttt! I just hope they don t totally embarrass themselves by sending out those pet arrival announcements like people do for a new baby! To announce the arrival of a stellar specimen such as myself is one thing. To announce the arrival of this Heinz 57 is quite another thing altogether. At that point, I would totally disavow ever knowing these foolish people! 9

Dear Tabby. Dear Tabby: Do mixed breed cats have a name? I know mixed breed dogs are often called mutts or mongrels, but how about cats? Mixed-Up-Mewser Dear Mixed Up What an interesting question! I did some research and discovered that one generic name for cats is grimalkin. I also know that Himalayan cats are actually the result of mixing Siamese cats with Persians, thus creating kitties who have Siamese markings but long fur and flat faces like Persians. Aside from this, I couldn't find any terms that refer specifically to mixed breed cats. But who cares? Stop worrying about names and embrace your own diversity. What's in a name? A famous cat once wrote, A rose by any other name would smell as sweet. Tabby Dear Tabby: I am an ordinary gray tiger cat living in an ordinary suburban home. My human insists that because I have been neutered, I should be content to remain indoors and not explore the outside world. Even so, I sometimes get a hankerin' to go out catting just once. What is the outside like Dear Tabby? What am I missing? Is it all parties and fun? Jinxie Dear Jinxie: You are missing a lot! If you were going outside, you would have the opportunity to dodge speeding cars, climb trees to escape slavering dogs, and even get eaten by coyotes. And then there is exposure to disease, bacteria, parasites and toxic plants! Sound like something you would enjoy? Seriously Jinxie, reducing pet overpopulation is not the only reason for cats to live out their lives indoors. Did you know that indoor cats live years longer than cats who regularly go outside? If you really want to feel the breeze in your fur and the sun on your back, ask your mom to get you a kitty harness and leash so you can enjoy the outdoors safely (only with human supervision) and without falling prey to all of the nasty, scary stuff. Tabby Dear Tabby: I had to go to the vet last week because I was sick. My mom had me in my carrier, but there was still lots of scary stuff going on in the waiting room. There were dogs and some little kids who kept poking their fingers at me while I was in my carrier. My mom nicely asked the children to not bother me because I was ill and afraid. In spite of this, they continued, and their mom had her hands full controlling two boisterous dogs. Mom decided that next time she should, perhaps, bring a towel and cover my carrier. Would this be a good idea? Would I get too hot? Rummy Dear Rummy: What an unpleasant experience for you. Going for medical treatment is scary enough without these other issues. I think a towel over your carrier would definitely help. I'm sure your vet's office is kept at an appropriate temperature, so there is no reason to fear over-heating. Another idea might be to ask the receptionist if you and your mom could wait in the car until an exam room was available. Hope you feel better soon. Tabby 10
