2 Instructions for Cavy Record Book Project books should only include records for the current year. DO NOT include records from past year(s). Project books should be placed in a folder (NOT in a 3-ring binder). DO NOT put the record book pages in page protectors. But you may put pictures and additional pages in page protectors. Additional pages are optional, but very much encouraged. Put pages in order and then put pictures and additional information behind the required pages. Start your record keeping portion of the book from Sept 2012, or as soon as you get your animal. (No later than May 1st). Complete the whole book. DO NOT leave any blank answers. Pictures: You are encouraged to be in the photo with your cavy project animal(s). Include captions on your pictures, or at least the date the photo was taken. The cover should have the 4-H members name and a picture of them and their cavy. NOTE: Effort, creativity, neatness, correctness and completeness of answers will be considered when judging the record book. 2
3 Objectives of 4-H Cavy Projects 1. To learn more about your project animal(s) - costs, feed, care, health and management skills. 2. To learn to select quality cavies. 3. To improve management and production practices. 4. To learn how to document activities and show progress in your project. 5. To learn how to use maintained management records to base decisions regarding feed, production and breeding. 6. To gain satisfaction from completing a project to the best of your ability. 7. To plan future projects. 8. To participate in group-activities and to assume responsibility in the 4-H cavy program. 9. To experience competing through a positive show experience with cavies at local area shows and/or the State 4-H Rabbit & Cavy Show. Good record keeping is a valuable skill to learn. Well kept and prepared records can be very helpful in applying for 4-H awards and scholarships in the future. Leader s Comments: Cavy Leader s Signature: 3
