STATE OF THE ARK Celebrating 40 years of rescuing, housing and adopting homeless animals CONGRATULATIONS CARMEN NEWETT, VOLUNTEER OF THE QUARTER Carmen Newett has been generously donating her time to HSFC since She has supported us at our thrift stores, at the Fairfax High School Craft Show, the city festival, and, most recently, worked with her godson, Vincent Thompson, on his Eagle Scout project to finalize the beautiful memorial garden at the farm to commemorate our lost animal friends. When asked why she began volunteering with us, Carmen replied, At the time I had been a vegetarian for years, it wasn t enough to say that I was a vegetarian - I wanted to do something to help animals. I wanted to find something that I could become a part of and make a difference in my small way. Somehow I read about the Humane Society of Fairfax County so I called the main number and asked about their volunteer program. After obtaining the packet of information, I got to the part about the Thrift Store. Shopping at flea markets and thrift stores for so many years with my mother, I thought this just might be something that I could do. I really debated for months before I sent the form back to the Humane Society because I wanted to make sure that this was really something I was serious about doing and, if I started, I would have to commit to it. My sisters laugh at me all the time about the 4th and 5th weekend of the month - nothing is to be scheduled on those weekends. Carmen has been married to her husband, Harry, for 29 years and together they have two fabulous Bichon Frises - Niko and Roscoe. She enjoys creating stained glass projects for family and friends. She also loves to go for long walks and reads a variety of cookbooks. Carmen is currently employed at Weil, Gotshal and Manges in Washington, DC in the environmental practice group, where she has worked for 22 years as a Legal Assistant. As to what aspect of volunteering she enjoys most, Carmen says I enjoy volunteering at the Humane Society of Fairfax County because I feel I am contributing to a worthwhile cause that I feel strongly about. Carmen, we appreciate your years of unfailing commitment and dedication and congratulate you again on being named our Volunteer of the Quarter! 2 WAGS, PURRS, CHIRPS, NICKERS, SNICKERS, SQUEALS, HUGS AND NEIGHS TO THESE SPECIAL ANGELS Special thanks to the following individuals and organizations for their recent support: The ACAT volunteers who spend their weekends at PetSmart, and the tireless energy they give fostering and socializing cats in their homes, and, most recently, for their support of the Extravacatza event, in concert with the Fairfax County Animal Shelter. Barb Becker for her continued efforts (and success!) with the feral cat program and her extraordinary efforts to help the feral cats through the Chantilly Trailer Park incident in late Spring. Diane Hale, Julie Eriksson, Tim Tuggle, Mary Kendall and Vicki Kirby for covering the farm chores so that Cara and Girlie could have a trip to the beach. Robert and Debra Otto and Tim Tuggle for their continued support with medicating Elvis, one of our special cats. Robert and Debra Otto for their Extreme Makeover, Main Office Edition. The Ottos have undertaken to renovate each of the rooms at the main office including removing pipes and old HVAC, repainting, installing new baseboards and cleaning top to bottom! All of the volunteers who participated in our Farm Workday in May: Kyle Prokok, Karen Sokol, Tim Tuggle, Frank Koeman, Kelly Meadows, Tito Alvarez, Ed Granzow, Cory Bollig, Allison Bollig, Marilyn Campbell, Glenis Weisz, Sara Weisz, Mike Scrafford, Glenn Dallaire, Diane Hale, Carmen Newitt, Rosita Chambus, Dan Larivey, Kelly Fiddler, Cara Donato, Danny Parker, Betsy Thompson, Jennie Sunner, Mary Kendall, Vicki Kirby, Jeanne Taylor, and Lynne Mayo. And generally, to: All of our farm volunteers who assist with the horses, dogs and general property upkeep; all of our building volunteers who support us through socializing and animal care as well as cleaning and assisting with administrative tasks, including our Sunday and after hours feeders; and all of our thrift store volunteers who assist with stocking, pricing, organizing and customer service. Betsy Thompson for taking on the task of staffing a HSFC booth at a Prince William County event coming in the Fall. Jack Taylor for scoring HSFC a prime spotlight in MITRE s company newsletter, which has nationwide circulation. Cara Donato for participating in an awareness event in Annandale on one of her days off in July (Girls Leadership Camp). Not only did Cara generate additional awareness about HSFC, but she also garnered material donations for HSFC and financial support for a special cat, Lucky Lou. Read his story, page 10.. Glenn Dallaire for his lawn maintenance at the main office in this grueling summer heat! Kasey Beernink for her tremendous support at the main office recently (we ll miss her when she returns to school!) Stacey Overman and Lynn Nelson Peretta for their ongoing support at the main office. 3 ADOPTION STATS Through 7/28/08, the Humane Society adopted out 60 cats, 56 dogs, two rabbits, three guinea pigs, one hamster and four birds into loving homes. A special thanks to all of our foster homes, home visit volunteers, socializers, outreach program volunteers and adoption placement volunteers. HELPING THE COMMUNITY Through 7/28/08, we provided financial assistance or supplies to the public for approximately 15 animals to receive the medical care or supplies they needed. Nine were issued as scholarships (not to be remunerated) while the remainder was distributed as community support. The HSFC feral TNR (Trap, Neuter & Return) program remains a success! Through 7/28/08, the feral outreach program trapped, neutered and released (TNR d) approximately 193 cats and kittens. VOLUNTEERS - WE NEED YOU! AND MORE OF YOU! HSFC is always growing and trying to do more to help the animals in our care and those in our community. To continue our success, we need to increase our volunteer base for all areas - the farm, the office and both thrift stores. Our volunteers are our best campaigners - if you know someone who is interested in a volunteer opportunity, please pass along our information. If your employer / workplace encourages volunteerism, we d be happy to discuss a group opportunity with them. Boy Scouts / Girl Scouts / Teams... be creative! And for all that you already do, we heartily thank you. We couldn t do it without you. Through 7/28/08, our administrative offices have responded to 3,239 phone calls, 2,247 s and 889 walk-ins. FAREWELL CAPTAIN MORGAN Captain Morgan left us on June 23, 2008 after years as a farm favorite. Born in 1988, Captain was a gorgeous fella and a true gentleman. Before coming to HSFC, he had been purchased on the internet, sight unseen and boarded at Battlefield Equestrian. When he came to us, we immediately saw what a special horse he was, with wonderful manners and a calm and kind nature that made him a shoe-in for helping to train volunteers. Captain loved to be groomed and loved the touch of his adoring volunteer friends. In his final days, Captain was given the freedom to run the barn as the field became precarious for him in his deteriorating condition. During those times, he could be seen playfully stalking the volunteers, following them down the barn aisle, end to end, with a great deal of curiosity. Captain Morgan, Special thanks to many of Captain s family who offered to help pay for holistic vet services (Julie Eriksson, Cara Donato, Marilyn Campbell, Rachel Szyszka, Jennie Sunner and Avanthi Gopallawa). And while their offer was truly generous in spirit, Dr. Carol Lundquist then cared for Captain without charging her hourly professional rate. Also thanks to Dr. Dancer Spence from the Haymarket Vet who was so kind and also became emotionally invested in Captain s care in just a short time. But this was Captain s way he endeared himself to all who knew him before they realized how attached they had become. Captain will continue to be greatly missed by all of us who knew and loved him. 4 HEALTH KICKS... HSFC s farm dogs and office cats have been on a health kick this year. Some of our larger than life office cats have been participating in a Biggest Loser program since January and the farm dogs have been on a path to migrate to healthy diets. We have been fortunate to receive generous donations of healthy treats to assist with these goals and, thankfully, the farm and run areas allow for plenty of exercise and play. Did you know that heavier pets can suffer from unnecessary conditions such as hip and knee injuries from too much weight bearing? Also, just like in humans, excess fat actually increases the risk of tumor growth. So... How about your pets at home? Are they spoiled royalty of the couch or are they healthy and active felines and canines? If you look at them objectively, do they seems a little plump or are you jealous of their bikini-bods? Following are tips to ensure your pets are in an ideal weight range. Remember, the healthier and more fit you can keep them, the longer they will be with you - and THAT should be everyone s goal! Following are the borderline scores for body conditions in cats and dogs. If your pet is bordering on too thin or too heavy, please consult your veterinarian to determine if there is an underlying health cause and to focus on a plan of action for improved health. FAT CAT OR SKINNY KITTY? Too Thin: Ribs palpable with minimal fat covering; noticeable waist band ribs; slight abdominal tuck; abdominal fat pad absent. Ideal: Well proportioned, observe waist behind ribs; ribs palpable with slight fat covering; abdominal fat pad minimal. TOO HEAVY: Ribs not easily palpated with moderate fat covering; waist poorly discernible; obvious rounding of abdomen, moderate abdominal fat pad. PLUMP PUP OR THIN CHIEN? Too Thin: Ribs easily palpated and may be visible with no palpable fat. Tops of lumbar vertebrae visible. Pelvic bones becoming prominent. Obvious waist and abdominal tuck. Ideal: Ribs palpable without excess fat covering. Waist observed behind ribs when viewed from above. Abdomen tucked up when viewed from side. TOO HEAVY: Ribs palpable with difficulty, heavy fat cover. Noticeable fat deposits over lumbar area and base of tail. Waist absent or barely visible. Abdominal tuck may be present. We encourage pet owners to research and educate themselves on the content of their pets food and treats, and to learn how to manage content to best ensure their pets are receiving proper nutritional balance. These two have been enrolled in the obedience training offered by HSFC and have quickly moved to the advanced level. They both passed their Canine Good Citizen test on June 28, This test is offered by the AKC and supports and promotes responsible dog ownership. Additionally, Huckleberry competes in agility and is just starting out in flyball. Zack is very social and loves the company of other canine friends. He also shares his home with two cats that were adopted from the HSFC in The beach boys recently vacationed together in Duck, NC and here s a picture of them oceanside. (L) Huck and (R) Zack COMING SOON! ANI-MEALS will officially launch to the public on Saturday September 6, The brainchild of longtime volunteer Kendal Moore, this pet food pantry program offers assistance to families in need who wish to keep their pets but find themselves struggling during difficult economic times. To this end, we are ramping up supplies and requesting donations of unopened and unexpired dry and canned pet food, cat litter, pet treats and general supplies. If your company is willing to sponsor a donation drive, please let us know. We anticipate that a well-placed tub in a mid-to large sized office can bring in quite a few donations over a two-week period! If your company is interested in participating, please leave word for Kendal Moore c/o the main office or hsfcnews@yahoo.com. We are also happily accepting donations from individuals - product or financial contributions can be delivered to the main office during regular business hours. Stay tuned for more information about this exciting program! Page 5 Summer, 2008

DO YOU KNOW ME? Just for fun and to test your intimate knowledge of some of our adoptables, we offer the following body part photos. If you believe you can identify the animal, please Jeanne Taylor at with your answers. Correct guesses will be announced in the next Volunteer Newsletter. No prizes - just an opportunity to prove how well you know our wonderful animal friends! Hint: below photos are recent farm adoptables. A B C D SUCCESS STORIES... Dear Carol and All, Firstly, thank you for your help with the adoption. We missed Cuddles greatly and our two new kitties have helped greatly to relieve some of that grief. Secondly, the mother and daughter that you knew as Wica and Willow are now Olive Oyl and Sweet Pea. You remember how long-legged and skinny she was and she reminded us of the Popeye cartoon so, of course, the baby would be Sweet Pea! Thirdly they both have been to the vet and are fine. Fourthly, they are slowly becoming comfortable with us. Olive Oyl has started to sleep on the bed with us at night and follows Kim from room to room. Sweet Pea plays all the time except when sleeping. They both are eating well and gaining weight. We think they are happy. At least we hope so because we are! Regards, Mark and Kim SEE MORE SUCCESS STORIES, NEXT PAGE Page 6 Summer, 2008

SUCCESS STORIES - MORE HAPPY TAILS! We wanted to give you an update on Chester and Annika now that they have been with us for just over a week. Chester is now Strawberry (Strawberry Rose) and seems to be growing every day. He has his mellow moments but other times is full of energy and likes to follow us wherever we go. Annika is now Blueberry (Blueberry Muffin). She is feisty and spirited but at the end of the day likes to cuddle very close while she sleeps. She never stops purring! Both kittens love to spend time on our sunroom relaxing in the sunny spots or joyfully playing with their toys. Their personalities are so different that it has been a real treat to watch their traits emerge. We are so happy to have them both with us. We look forward to many happy days and years with them. Thank you again for your assistance and for raising them so well as tiny kittens. The Griffin Family (no photo provided at this time) Elsa (now Ilsa) (first farm dog ever!) Dear HSFC: We are expecting our first human child very soon but here is an Ilsa update. Ilsa and Sagi (my wife s dog) share the sunroom. Ilsa has even been known to play with our cat (Josie) as well as my mom s dog and a friend s dog. While I can t say that she is the most social of animals, she is far more willing to accept others than she was. Part of that is socialization and part, I am sure, is due to her age. You can see it in her eyes and around her mouth, all of the gray, you can see it in how slow she gets up and how slowly she walks, that she is starting to get old. But she still gets excited to see me and she still gets into play postion when I grab her leash. Michael, Nicole, Ilsa, Sagi, Josie, and the soon to be born (Pictured (L): Ilsa, (R): Sagi) Here are Bruin and Bodie (formerly Aaron and Adam of the A Team ) sprawled out on the couch getting ready to nap. Mark and I just wanted to write and say how wonderful an addition they have made to our home and how happy we are to have adopted them. Bodie is a complete cuddle bug he s not happy unless he s completely in your lap snuggled up to your face. Bruin is the great protector of the house... he has to know what s going on in every room every second of the day. They re both so playful, personable and so loving to us and each other. They re so good with people and with other dogs they have nothing but love and a million kisses for everyone. We re so thankful that we could adopt them both and keep the brothers together because they truly enjoy each other s company. If they re not playing together then they re laying on top of each other just like they were the first time we saw them - piled up in a bed with their five sisters. They have brought so much love and excitement to our home and even though we have only had them since March, it feels like they have always been a part of our family. We d take 432 more dogs if we could! Thank you so much for the service you provide and for blessing us with the opportunity to expand our family. Erin and Mark MORE SUCCESS STORIES NEXT PAGE!!! 8 SUCCESS STORIES (CONTINUED FROM PREVIOUS PAGE) We wanted to update you on Mandi (formerly Amanda from the A-Team of the border collie mix puppies). It s been about 3 months since Mandi came into our family and she is doing excellent! We love her to pieces and can t believe how well her personality fit right in with us. She adjusted quickly, picked up house breaking and crate training within a few weeks and is even about to graduate from puppy obedience school this week. She is full of energy and keeps us both very active. She loves going on long hikes, swimming after her tennis ball and taking weekend camping trips! She is definitely one happy and healthy puppy. We can t thank you enough for taking such great care of her before we had the opportunity to adopt her. We ve included photo of Mandi (below, left) so you can see how much she s grown. Thank you again for everything you do. Stephanie and Josh I am writing to thank Cara for all the thought and care she gave us when we adopted our beagle, Buddy, from your organization. She went out of her way to find the perfect match for our family. She even brought Buddy to our house to make sure the transition with our other dog (who has since passed away) went smoothly. We absolutely adore Buddy and take him with us everywhere we go. We think that he is perfection! Thank you so much Cara! When the time comes to adopt a new pet, I will go straight to HSFC, because I know that there are a smaller amount of dogs, and a staff that really takes the time to listen to your needs. With great appreciation, Alex W. The house would be terribly lonely without Twinkie thumping around. We don t understand it, but Twinkie s presence has brought even more harmony with Tab, Gidget and Gilbert maybe because G&G look to Twinkie to channel their energy vs. Tab. The vets have said Twinkie is most likely a cerebellar hypoplasia (CH) kitty. The fact that she didn t die of anything else is one way they ve concluded that! The jerky movements, tremors and uncoordinated motions (often falls down when walking) are classic CH symptoms. The tremors increase when a CH animal is excited you should see Twinkie when there is food around. Twinkie does so well, I m surprised to find CH kitties in the disabled category, but special care is needed, so I guess they say that so people know what they re getting into perhaps another reason why they re not quickly adopted if they aren t destroyed. Raising her food and water bowls really helped Twinkie s bobbing head when eating and drinking. Bolster beds give her support. In fact, she just got her own Bowser bed. (As you can see from the photo, she loves it!) Stacey and George (Buddy pictured below surrounded by adoring fans) Page 8 Summer, 2008

STILL MORE SUCCESSES! My husband William and I adopted a puppy from you. Santana (whom my husband re-named Laser) is a pointer mix who was a bit small and underweight for his age. He was born and we adopted him from you on Right after we got him home he was pretty sick with a respiratory infection, but it cleared up quickly with meds from the vet. He was extremely timid when we adopted him, but has grown a considerable personality that does include a more outgoing nature. We are also happy to say that has grown a little bit more, and is now a healthy 37 pounds. He and our other dog, Doodlebug, are best friends and spend all of their time together. He is a perfect addition to our family. Still loves to cuddle with us, and play in the yard with Doodlebug. Thank you; our experience was incredible and your staff were extremely nice! Mari Mari Left: Laser, Center: Cat and Right: Doodlebug Dear HSFC: Just wanted to let you know the kittens are doing great. We gave them new names: Jynx and Jazz (Whisper and Wendy respectively). We kept them in a smaller room (about the size of the one I met them in) for the first couple weeks, no place to hide. But I d spend a couple hours a day just sitting in there and letting them get used to me. Had me worried for a while, thought they had quite a bit of the wild gene, seemed more timid than other kittens I ve known. But they ve gotten over that for the most part now. We moved them to the basement which is a kitty paradise. Tons of places to explore, it s unfinished so they can run like all get out. Lots of places to hide too, but they come to me readily now and love the cat brush. We do our laundry down there, so there s always piles of clothes for them to snuggle in! The basement also has a sliding glass door and window facing the forest, I put their hutch by it so they could take a nap and have dreams of chasing squirrels, rabbits, deer, and all the other animals that live out there. Also got them a running-water dish that has a little waterfall in it -- they like to play with that. They dip there paws in the fall and then lick the water. We leave the basement door open frequently and they are beginning to explore the house now. They still like to chase the birds, but I think it s just a kitten thing, they aren t hungry. Next week I ll put a kitty door in the wall between the basement stairwell and upstairs so they ll have pretty much free run of the house, that way they can spend the nights upstairs when the winter makes it cooler down there--but I ll continue the litter box and feeding in the basement. I believe Jynx and Jazz are starting to think of us as family and our house as home. Best regards, Michael (photos not provided this submission) Page 9 Summer, 2008

AS LUCK WOULD HAVE IT... Following is an excerpt from an chain with HSFC, and this gentleman provdes that there are still Good Samaritans in this world. On 7/8/08 at 6:30 am I was driving from Reston into Manassas when I noticed what I thought was a paper bag blowing about and flopping in the road (route 28 South). When I came upon this bag I noticed that it was in fact a small orange kitten that was struggling to get out of the road. Apparently he had been hit by a car and left for dead. I stopped traffic and got the kitten and immediately called my friend Brandy and the two of us cleaned him up and took him to Prince William Animal Hospital. We chose PWAH because they were the closest to where we were and they had an earlier opening time and I felt that was critical. Brandy and I took the kitten in and directed the doctor to (1) check the kitten and if he had massive internal injuries that were not able to be addressed I wanted to, at the very least, pay for the kitten to be put down in a humane way and/or (2) after being checked out if the doctor felt the kitten has even the smallest chance of survival I wanted to do what was necessary to help him survive. The kitten was in shock and was treated, was given IV pain medication and x-rays were done. I told the doctor that I would take full responsibility for this kitten s life no matter if he lived 20 minutes or 20 years and to please make a heroic effort and not just put him down. After about an hour, Brandy and I met with the doctor and the x-rays showed he had a fractured right hip and no internal organ injury other than some bleeding and swelling of the brain and some other minor injuries. The doctor suggested the kitten be hospitalized for at least 48 hours with close supervision which I agreed with. The doctor informed me that he thought hip surgery would be in order if the kitten survived the 48 hours. Brandy and I left and decided to name the kitten Lucky Lou. Forty-eight hours came and went and we checked in on Lucky every day and he was released to come home on Friday, 7/11/08 with oral pain medications and antibiotics. We were told to keep him crated so his mobility was restricted while his hip rested/healed and to bring him back in one week for evaluation. The doctor wants to see how his hip is healing and if surgery will (1) be necessary and (2) give Lucky a better quality of life. Well, Lucky the first few days was rather still but the last few days has been into everything as he has found moving around on three legs is rather easy for him. He seems to put no pressure on his injured leg which I am assuming is a good thing. Lucky goes back to PWAH to see the doctor today 7/17/08 at 10:45am to be x-rayed again and assessed for this hip surgery. I want to tell you first that I love this kitten and regardless he will have a happy home for the rest of his life which I hope will be long and full of richness. The reason I am writing you is two-fold: 1. After meeting with the doctor this morning I may need some advice as to the necessity of surgery. Is there anyone on your staff that can act as a second opinion for me to make sure I am truly doing what is in Lucky s best interest? 2. As you can imagine the cost of Lucky s care has been expensive -- I knew it would be bad but this has the possibility to exceed what I would have thought was a financial worst case. His hospitalization last week was just over $ and if he needs this surgery that and the associated hospitalization will be around $2, $2, and I am worried to death about this. Don t get me wrong... Lucky will get what he needs even if I have to scale back for a year to pay for it -- I would NEVER compromise the medical care he needs over cost but I am struggling at the possibility of paying for all of this as I never saw this expense coming when I was driving to work last Tuesday and I just wasn t prepared for it. Therefore: A. Are there any grants that exist through HSFC that help with such cases? I can have the PWAH provide you with any documentation that is necessary. B. If no grants exist (I know we are in a tight economy and funds are limited) could HSFC consider the cost of Lucky s recent medical bills as a donation in kind to the HSFC which would be tax deductible for me? This will not immediately help me but would be somewhat of a benefit come tax time next year. I am really traumatized over this because I do love Lucky so much and I am thankful I was there at the right time to be able to make a difference for him unlike all the other drivers that morning that simply just drove around him, but I am just worried over the cost of all of this. I know how finances might be for you, as I work for a not-for-profit human service organization myself and we are faced with huge budget cuts so I can imagine you are in the same boat. If Lucky doesn t need the hip surgery I am fine, but if he needs it, I want to make sure he gets it while at the same time making sure I can financially manage in my own life. Signed, Andrew C. Page 10 Summer, 2008

LUCKY... Update from Andrew C.: (continued from previous page) LuckyLou is eating well and seems to be happy. Brandy is in Indiana visiting her mom and dad so I have sole parental custodianship... for a kitten with a broken hip he seems to want to be into everything. When he is all healed I can imagine he will be running around the house like a race car driver. He finished his medication last night and all is well. I have to tell you that your call on Friday has really touched me and everyone I have spoken to about Lucky- Lou. Those kids raising money to go to his surgery... your assistance, the kind treatment at the Vet s office... LuckyLou s road to recovery... all combined has given Brandy and ME a renewed faith in people. Living in Northern VA is not easy - we are both from small towns where you know everyone and if someone dies your neighbors bring over a pie or something to share, you know a real feeling of community. I have not felt this in Northern VA until just now. For your major role in all of that, I am grateful on many levels. Sincerely, Andrew Special thanks to the Girls Leadership Camp participants, who, were so moved by Lucky s plight, they specifcally requested their donations generated from a carnival ($140) be applied toward his care. Thank you: Dani Donnelly, Angelica Young, Bella Valdes, Linsey Welsh, Kristen Nguyen, Casey Donnelly and, to their Camp Counselor at the Audrey Moore RECenter, Alex Fuerth.
