Keywords:watatsumi,ampliantennulata,KumanoSea -11- MunidaLeach,1820isthemostspecies-richgenus in the superfamily Galatheoidea,represented by about280speciesworldwide(babaetal.,2008;updatedbymacpherson,2009;2013;cabezasetal.,2009; 2011;Hendrickx and Ayon-Parente,2010;Komai, 2011a;2011b;2012).From watersaroundjapan,37 speciesofthegenushavebeen recorded (Komai, 2012).Thevastmajorityofspeciesinthegenusoccur insublitoraltoupperbathyalzonedownto1000m, buttenspeciesextendstothemiddlebathyaldepths greaterthan1500m (Babaetal.,2008;Komai,2011a; Liuetal.,2013). Thepresentarticleservestodescribeanew speciesofmunida,m.watatsumisp.nov.,onthebasisof twospecimenscolectedfrom thekumanosea,japan,atdepthsof m,duringthekt04-6 cruiseofrv Tansei-maru ofthejapanagencyfor MarineScienceand Technology (JAMSTEC).The new species appears close to M.ampliantennulata Komai,2011,presentlyknownonlyfrom IwakiSeamount,NorthPacificofJapan,M.magniantennulata BabaandTürkay,1992from thelaubasinandof Queensland,southwesternPacific,M.manqingaeLiu, Lin and Huang,2013 from the SouthwestIndian Ridge,andM.typhleMacpherson,1994,widelydistributedinthewesternPacific.Diferentiatingcharactersbetween thenew speciesand thelaterfour closerelativesarediscussed. ThetypespecimensaredepositedinthecolectionsoftheNaturalHistoryMuseum andinstitute, Chiba(CBM).Themeasurementprovidedispostrostralcarapacelength(cl),measuredfrom thebaseof therostrum tothemidpointoftheposteriormargin ofthecarapace.thehigherclassificationfolowsthat recentlyproposedbyahyongetal.(2010). Rostrum (Fig.1A)spiniform,about0.4timesas longascarapace,nearlyhorizontalinlateralview.supraocularspinesmoderatelylong,slightlydiverging anteriorlyandveryslightlyascendinginlateralview, about0.3lengthofrostrum.innerorbitalspineslender,clearlyvisibleindorsalview. Pterygostomialflap (Fig.1B)pointed anteriorly withminutegranule:lateralfacerugosewithscatteredobliquelytransverseridges. Thoracicsternite3(Fig.1C)about3.7timeswider thanlong,distinctlyseparatedfrom sternite4,much widerthananteriorwidthofsternite4;anteriormarginfaintlygranulate,withdistinct,v-shapedmedian notch.sternite4with medialy interrupted transverseridgeadjacenttoanteriormargin,anteriorpart somewhatsloping toward anterior;ventralsurface shalowly concave medialy,with faintvery short striaemedialy.sternites5-7smooth.transverse ridgesdividingsternitesnearlysmooth,withsparse shortsetae. Secondpleomere(Fig.1A)with1distinct,uninterrupted,transversestriaontergum;anteriorridgeunarmed.Thirdpleomere(Fig.1A)with1uninterrupted, transverse stria on tergum, unarmed anteriorly. Fourthpleomereonlywithanteriorridgeontergum, unarmed.sixthpleomere(fig.2g)withbroadlywshaped grooveon posteriorhalf,otherwisesmooth. Telson(Fig.2G)slightlywiderthanlong,incompletely dividedin5plates(divisionofposterolateralplatenot obvious);scatered squamiform ridges on posterolateralplates. Eyes(Figs.1A,2A)smal.Corneaaboutaslongas eyestalk,notdilated,cornealwidthsubequaltowidth betweenrostrum andsupraocularspineandabout 0.10 ofcarapace length.eyestalk cylindrical;eyelashesabsent. Basalsegmentofantennularpeduncle(Figs.1A, 2A)stout,lengthexcludingdistalspinesabout1.7of width;distalspinesunequalwithmesialspinemuch shorterthanlateral;2lateralspinespresent,distal spinelocatedproximaltobaseofdistolateralspine, not reaching it,proximalspine located slightly midlengthofsegment;statocystlobeinflated,ventral surfacerounded,withscateredminutetuberclesand sparsesetae. Antennalpeduncle(Figs.1A,2A)moderatelystout, overreaching distalcornealmarginsby length of fourthsegment.firstsegmentwithmoderatelyshort distomesialspinereachingmidlengthofsecondsegment;distolateralangleunarmed.second segment withsmalspineeachatdistomesialanddistolateral angles,spinessubequalinlength,distomesialspine reachingmidlengthofthirdsegment.thirdsegment withsmalspineatdistomesialangle,unarmedondistolateralangle.fourthsegmentunarmed. Thirdmaxiliped(Fig.2B)moderatelyslender.Ischium distinctlylongerthanmerus,withtinyventrodistalspine,extensordistalangleunarmed.merus notmarkedlynarroweddistaly,flexormarginwith2 greatly unequalspines,distalspinetiny,proximal spine prominent, arising slightly proximal to midlength;extensordistalmarginunarmed.exopod narrowlydistaly,distinctlyoverreachingdistalmarginofmerus;lateralsurfaceslightlyrugose. Onlyrightcheliped(Fig.1D-F)preserved,about 2.0timesaslongascarapace.Meruswithrow of7 spinesondorsalsurfacelateraly(spinesincreasingin

4 -14- size distaly,distolateralspine strongly diverging) and 2prominentspinesdistomesialy (distalspine strongerthandistolateralspine);lateralfacewithminute,somewhatscale-liketuberclesbecominglarger ventralyandwith1strongspineatventrodistalangle;mesialfacewithsparsegranules,armatureincluding1prominentsubdistalspinesomewhatproximal tobaseofdistomesialspine,1prominentspineatventromesialdistalangleand1moreprominentspineon ventromesialmargin arising atdistal0.3length of merus;ventralsurfacewithtinytosmalscale-liketubercles;setaeonsurfacessimpleorslightlyplumose, lengthquitevariable.carpusabout0.8timesaslong aspalm,about1.9timeslongerthandistalwidth;dorsolateralmarginwith4spinesnoticeablyincreasing in sizedistaly (distalmostspinesubmarginal),dorsomesialmarginwith4spines(secondspineprominent,strongly diverging;distomesialspine tiny); lateralfacewithsomesmal,scale-liketuberclesbecominglargerventralyand1conspicuoussubterminalspineonmidline;ventromesialfacewith2smal subterminalspines.palm about1.8timeslongerthan wide;dorsalsurfacewithrow oftinyspinesandtuberclesonmidline,dorsolateralmargin5spinesnoticeably increasing in size distaly, dorsomesial marginwith4spinesalsoincreasinginsizedistaly, distomesialangleunarmed;mesialfacewithoutconspicuousspines(fig.3a);ventralsurfacewithsmal, low,scale-likeormultidenticulatetubercles;fixedfingerstraight,terminatinginsharpclaw,with1tiny subdistaltuberclelateralyand1moderatelystrong spinesomewhatproximaltomidlength(fig.3b),cutting edge slightly sinuous,with row ofminute, roundeddenticles.dactylus1.3timesaslongaspalm, unarmed on dorsalsurface,terminating in sharp, curvedclaw crossingtipoffixedfinger;mesialmarginwithfew low tubercles;cutingedgewithrow of minute,roundeddenticlesoverentirelength,very narrow proximalhiatusbetweendactylusandfixed finger.setationonchelasparse,setaeondorsalsurfaceshort,thoseonlateralandmesialfacesmixture ofshortandlongishones. Ambulatorylegs(secondtofourthpereopods)moderatelylongandslender,secondandthirdpereopods subequalinlength,fourthpereopodshorterthanprecedingpereopods.secondpereopod(fig.2c),when anteriorlyextended,reachinglevelofmidlengthof rostrum bytipofmero-carpalarticulation,about1.9 timesaslongascarapace;merusabout0.9timesas longascarapace,about7.1timeslongerthanwide, dorsalmarginwithrow ofsparsesetaeand10spines noticeablyincreasinginsizedistaly,ventralmargin with1strongdistolateralspinefolowedby3smaler spinesandsomeshorttransverseridges,lateralface withscateredshortsetae,ventromesialdistalangle with1moderatelysmalspine;carpusaboutone-third lengthofpropodus,withprominentextensordistal spinefolowedby1smalerspineor2closeproximal spinulesonextensormargin,flexordistalmarginproducedinspine,lateralfacewithweaklongitudinal ridgedorsaly,otherwisenearly smooth;propodus withfew minutegranulesonextensormargin,lateral facewithfew minutegranulesandfew longsetae, flexormargin with row ofmovablespinesevenly spaced;dactylus(fig.2d)about0.6timesaslongas propodusand 5.9 timeslongerthan basalwidth, slightlycurveddistaly,bearingsparseshorttolong stifsetae,flexormarginfaintlysinuous,with9or10 corneousspinulesdecreasing in length proximaly alongentirelength(ultimatespinuleslender,contiguouswithclaw).thirdpereopod(onlyrightsidepreserved)(fig.2e)similartosecondpereopod;merus bearingrow of11spinesincreasinginsizedistaly and becoming double row proximaly on dorsal margin,ventralmarginwith1moderatelystrongdistalspinefolowedby1smalerspineandrow ofshort transverseridges;carpussimilartothatofsecond pereopod;propoduswith6movablespinesonflexor margin;dactylusbrokenofatdistalpart,thusexact numberofflexorspinulesunknown(preservedpart with 7flexorspinules).Fourth pereopod (Fig.2F) slightlyfalingshortofanterolateralangleofcarapacebymero-carpalarticulation;ischium withtiny dorsodistalspine;merusabout0.7lengthofthatof secondpereopod,with5or6spinules(includingdistal one)ondorsalmarginandwith1strongdistalspine folowedbylow transverseridgesonventralmargin; carpuswith prominentextensordistalspine and flexordistalspine,distinctlysmalerthanthoseofprecedingpereopods,extensormarginwith1additional smalspine slightly distalto midlength;propodus with 5movablespineson flexormargin;dactylus with9corneousspinulesonflexormargin. Merusoffifthpereopodalmostsmoothonlateral surface. Uropodalexopod (Fig.2H)with lateralmargin faintly denticulate,with minute movable spinules; outersurfacewithmovablespinulesarrangedin2 longitudinalrowsalonglateralmargin;posteriormargintruncate,withrow ofminutemovablespinules.

Remarks.Munidawatatsumisp.nov.appearsclosest tom.ampliantennulataandm.magniantennulatainhavingfivebranchialspinesandonepairofepibranchial spinesonthecarapace,slightlyobliquefrontalmargins ofthe carapace,unarmed second pleomere, smal,non-dilatedcornea(thecornealwidthisalmost equaltothedistanceofthesinusbetweentherostrum andsupraocularspine),andtherelativelystout basalsegmentoftheantennularpeduncle.thenew speciesdifersfrom M.ampliantennulatainthefolowingparticulars:(1)maintransverseridgesontheposteriorbranchialregionofthecarapaceareentirein M.watatsumisp.nov.,whereasmanyofthem areinterruptedorsubdividedinshortridgesinm.ampliantennulata;(2)therearedistinctlyfewersecondarystriae betweenmainridgesinm.watasumisp.nov.thanin M.ampliantennulata;(3)spinesontheantennalpedunclearerelativelystrongerinM.watatsumisp.nov. thaninm.ampliantennulata,particularlythedistomesialspineonthefirstsegmentreachesthemidlength ofthatsegment;(4)thepalm ofthechelipedisdistinctlylongerthanthecarpusandlacksspinesonthe mesialfaceinm.watatsumisp.nov.,whereasthepalm issubequalinthelengthtothecarpusandarmed withoneortwostrongspinesonthemesialfaceinm. ampliantennulata;(5)dorsolateralspinesonthefixed fingerofthechelaarestronginm.watasumi,rather thanminuteinm.ampliantennulata. Thenew speciesisdistinguishedfrom M.magniantennulataby(1)thelessconvexanterolateralmargin ofthecarapace,(2)theabsenceofaspineontheanteriorpartofthebranchialregion,(3)thestrongerdistomesialspineonthefirstsegmentoftheantennal peduncle(reachingtothemidlengthofthesecond segmentversusfarfalingshortofit),(4)thepossessionoftwospinesontheflexormarginofthethird maxilipedmerus,and(5)thepresenceofconspicuous spinesonthefingersofthecheliped.inm.magniantennulata,theanteriorpartofthebranchialregionbears onesmalspine;thethirdmaxilipedmerusisarmed withthreespinesontheflexormargin;andthefingersofthechelipeddonothaveconspicuousspines (BabaandTürkay,1992). MunidamanqingaeandM.typhlearealsosimilarto M.watasumisp.nov.Nevertheless,thenew speciesis immediatelydistinguishedfrom M.typhleby(1)the relativelyshortsupraocularspines(reachingtodistal cornealmarginsversusoverreachingthem),(2)the possessionofonlyonepairofepigastricspinesonthe carapace,(3)thelackofspinesonthesecondpleomere,and(4)therelativelyshortdistomesialspineof thefirstsegmentoftheantennalpeduncle(reaching midlengthoffirstsegmentversusnearlyreachingdistalmarginoffirstsegment).inm.typhle,therearefive pairsofepigastricspinesonthecarapace;thesecond pleomereisarmedwithtwopairsofspinesontheanteriorridge(macpherson,1994).theslightlyoblique frontalmargin of the carapace (versus strongly oblique)andthepossessionofonepairofepigastric spines(versusthreepairs)immediately distinguish thenew speciesfrom M.manqingae(cf.Liuetal.,2013). ThefolowingninespeciesofMunidaareknownto occuratdepthsgreaterthan1500m (Babaetal.,2008; Komai2011a;Liu etal.,2013):m.ampliantennulata (IwakiSeamount,NorthPacific,1744m),M.asprosoma AhyongandPoore,2004(New SouthWales,Vanuatu andtaiwan, m),m.curvipesbenedict,1892 (southeasternpacificofchile,1922m),m.endevourae AhyongandPoore,2004(ofsoutheasternAustralia, NorfolkRidgeandKermadecRidge, m),M. magniantennulata (Lau Basin and of Queensland, southwesternpacific, m),m.manqingae (SouthwestIndianRidge,2218m),M.microphthalmaA. Milne-Edwards,1880(AtlanticOcean, m), M.subcaecaBouvier,1922(easternandwesternAtlantic, m),andM.tiresiasMacpherson,1994 (New Caledonia,Taiwan,andJapan, m). Thepresentnew speciesisthetenthofmunidaoccurringatsuchgreatdepths,andrepresentsoneofthe deepest records next to M.manqingae,M.microphthalmaandM.tiresias. Etymology.NamedaftertheJapanesegodofthesea Watatsumi.
