China Abstract A new species of thegenusscap1idi1lmcollected from ZhejiangProv and A n' hui Prov. isdescribed under thename of Seat)hidiu,n bivl,on x-uan1sp nov and its diagnostic characters are illustrated. Scap/1idium co,nos (recorded from Zhejiang Prov ) ands grande (recorded from Yunnan Prov., Fujian Prov and Guangdong Prov ) are recorded from the mainland of China for the first time. Key words Coleoptera, Staphylinidae, Scaphidiinae, Scaphidiu,n, new species, new record, C hina. The genus Scaphidium OLIV ER, 1790 is a large genus of subfamily Scaphidiinae (LATREILLE, 1807). Up to the present, at least 325 species of the genus have been known from the world (LOBL, 1997; HosHINA and MoRIMoTo, 1999; FIERRos-LoPEz, 2005) and 35 from China. In general face, Scaphldiumas well as other generaof Scaphidiinaeare quiteeasy to bedistinguished from rest generaof Staphylinidaeby thebox-likeand highly convex body form,with theelytracovering theabdomen, butnot the flexiblestaphylinoidbody form. Tocomparewith the relative genera of Scaphidiinae, this genuscan be distinguished by the combination of following characters: robust species; head retracted under pronotum; eye notched; segments of antennal club symmetrical; scutellum large and visible; procoxa1 cavities closed posteriorly; base of elytron impressed to receive extended basal angle of pronotum; centre of metasternum pubescent inmale; mesostema1keel bifid basally. Recently, we examined a lot of specimensbelonging to the genusscaphidium in our collections. And among them, onenewspecies, which isdescribed here, and two new records fromp. R. Chinaarerecognized. SincetheScap/udiumspeciesofP. R.Chinahavebeen well revisedby 1. LOBL in hisexcellent workaf t999, we insert thesethreespecies to hiskey (marked as#) for facilitatingthe identification. All the typespecimens are deposited inshnu (Department of Biology, Shanghai Normal University). Other materials treated in thisstudy were deposited inshnu andsem (Shanghai Entomology Museum, thechineseacademy of Science). Description: Coloration. Male and female: head dark reddishbrown. Antennae(Fig 4) segments I-VI dark brown, antennae VII-X black, XI slightly lighter than the former four segments.pronotum withtwo longitudinal black fasciae, while theremainingsurface of the pronotum reddish brown.eachelytronwith tworound, blackbasal spots: onehumeral spot andone spot near the suture, and with one 00''-shapedmedian fascia and one apical fascia while the remainingsurface of the elytron yellowish brown. Exposed abdominal tergites reddish brown. Prohypomera black mostly with yellowish brown laterally. Prosternum, mesosternum and metasternum black. Abdominal sternite I black to dark reddish brown apicaridly, and the remainingstemitesreddish brown. Femoraandtibiae very dark brown, tarsi lightbrown. Fronsandvertex finelyandsparselypunctate, fronsat narrowest point betweeneyes0.18 mm (holotype). Pronotum not raised above elytra, weakly inflexed anteriorly, with lateral edgesslightly sinuate; disca1 punctation almost evenly fine andsparse, similar to that on frons, consisting of shallowpunctures; antebasa1puncture row impressed,not interruptedatmiddle. Elytra weaklyconvex, humeral areaslightly raised; discal impression absent, discslightly impressed apically, adsutura1area at and impressed; discal punctation very no andsparseon large inner portion, muchsparser thanpronota1punctation, obsoleteon lateral area; each elytron with 3 disca1 puncture rows, which are almost equal in length; sutural striapuncture row relatively fine, basal stria row deeply impressed, with punctures much coarser than those forming pronota1antebasal row. Prohypomera even, without microsculputre, black in most inner portion, brown lateral edges. Mesepistemavery finelypunctate. Exposed abdominal tergites very finely punctate and w i th microsculpture consisting of punctures. Centre of stemite I withmicrosculpture consistingsparse punctures, lateral portions withoutmesh-likemicrosculpture. Legs(Fig 5) long,mesotibiaeandmetatibiaecurved. Aedeagus and male sexual characters: Metasternum (Fig 6) impressed in middle, with short lodged pubescence, and two long lateral setal tufts. Profemora with ventral side cornuted on basal third portion with ridge. Protibiae even, hardly sinuate. Aedeagus (Fig 7) mm long. Median lobe subpara11e1posterior basal bulb, with tip angular and in exed. P arameres slightly sinuate, almostevenly wide. Internal sac (Fig 8) with apical complex of sclerites: one apical insert, onetransverse X-like complex, two large comma-likesclerites and one transverse

Relna1-ks:Thisspecies issimilar tos taka/1ashii MIwAet MIToNo (China,Taiwan), from which itdiffersby the following points: 1.pronotum without spotson lateral portion, while ins takahas/1it itbears twospotson lateral portionofpronotum; 2. elytra withapical fascia while in S takahashii withsubapical fascia. In the key of LOBL 1999, this species should be placed at # 10 and can be distinguished from S formosanum by spots pattern on elytra: each elytron with two basal spots, one 00 一 shaped fasc ia on median portion and one apical fascia while in S fo,-mosanum it with one humeral spot, threeseparatedspotsonmedianportionandoneapical fascia. Thisspecies is named in honor of Mr. BI Wen-Xuan, who collected some specimens used in thisstudyand helped usa lot infieldwork. In thekey of LOBL (1999), thisspeciesshould beplaced at # 3andcan be distinguished from S fukiense from following points: 1, S. co,noswith tarsi and I-VI antennal segments brownish while ins fukiense body, antennae and legs (including tarsi) entirely black; 2, head, pronotum and elytra with punctation denseandclose while ins fitklense bears one disca1row of coarsepunctures; remainingdisca1punctationobsolete; pronota1punctaionvery fine; 3, prohypomera uneven, with microsculpture consisting of coarse and dense punctures while ins fukiensesmooth and without impressions; 4, stemite I withmicrosulptureconsisting of obvious punctureson themost largemedianpotionandevencoarseranddenseron theoutboardportion whileins. fukiensestemite Iextremely finelypunctate, without microsculpture.
