1 MASTERS REPORT Where oh where is the rain??? I did hope that this season would be a much kinder one to us all than last season, but sadly, not to be it seems I am endeavouring to try and source some country that has seen a little more moisture, and this will be a work in progress, so all I can suggest in the meantime is keep reading the s from our faithful secretary on property venue updates as there will be some changes. I am eternally grateful to our landowners for still letting us onto their country, with this awful drought still hammering them, so please treat them as kindly as possible, and try not to run over any paddocks willy nilly, and always double check on gates. I do understand that some of you are disappointed with some of our recent days sport, but I can assure you that Charles and I are doing our very best in trying to provide you some entertainment. I also only have a limited number of horses, as we all do, and with the ground so hard I always have concerns (as should you all), that I would like to make it to the other end of the season and still have a horse to ride. With thanks Angelique Hyde Master HUNTSMAN REPORT With the dry times holding on, the hounds are still trying there hardest. Considering the conditions we are getting some good hound work. On the 27th April, we took 7 hounds to the National Hound Show at the Mystery Creek Polo club. We had a great show, Hugo was second in the first season dog, and Isabelle and Mischief were second in the couple of hound class. Other hounds were in the top 10 selections throughout the day as well. We recently took hounds up for the National Hound Show at Waikato. Charles and a few other South Island Huntsman banded together to combine in the transport, and I, personally was so proud of our young Huntsman that his efforts were well rewarded, but I shall let him tell you of our spoils at the show. He really was a credit to our Hunt, and it was noticed by other Masters also. The children s meet was very successful, and we even had Jane Thompson from Horse and Pony there on the day, it was super to see some names out that have been involved with the hunt in years gone by and great to see the children out. Now I have also been informed that both the Hunter Trials and the dance organisers have serious concerns on lack of interest, please be aware that we desperately need these sort of fun events to a) raise funds for the hunt, and b)to let our hair down and have FUN!!! So please get on board and support them, as without these opportunities we will have no fund raising. The dance should be a super night, after all how often do we get to see people dressed up in some pretty raunchy outfits..and there are some awesome prizes up for grabs at the hunter trials. On that note, my parting comment... please bare with us on trying hunt days, all the old timers assure me that it will rain eventually. Charles Miller-Brown presenting Isabelle at the National Hound Show. The pack, A while ago in the newsletter I wrote about the type of hounds we are aiming to breed. This time I will write about different roles hounds can play in the pack. These dry times we are experiencing at the moment don't lend themselves to having strong scenting days, with hard running.

2 When you enter new hounds into the pack, the fundamentals are either born into the hounds or not, and we will continue only with young entry showing natural ability. The young hounds we have out now are all doing things right. Yet they will take time to become confident on scent, with this season being so dry, scent is weak. This season we have a number of older bitch hounds who when the hounds are running are abit slower. But when the hounds lose the scent are instrumental in trying to work the scent out. A hound which is particularly valuable is one who can work on tracks, roads and dirt. These hounds are few and far between. It is very important to have hounds with lots of drive and tenacity, so when the going gets tough for them, they keep trying. When scenting is tough the hounds will slow down, hence why we have been having slower days recently. When the scent is 'red hot' the hounds will generally hunt quicker. Summerhays VICARS & TARTS DANCE Dust off those fishnets and stiletto s, pull that book out of the draw... Its the Happy Hound s annual dance at the Waikari Hall, Friday 27 th May. Prizes for best dressed (or undressed as the case may be!) are up for grabs. Ticket price includes an ongoing supper. Scent is a very difficult thing to try to understand. Some days you may think everything is in place for a great day and the scent won't hold, and on the contrary you may head out on a day not looking very promising, and you have a brilliant day, but that is what makes live hunting what it is. Happy Hunting WAIKATO HUNT WEEK AWARDS We hear Charles and his hounds weren t the only ones to receive an award during Waikato Hunt Week. Congratulations JBL, it s great to hear your consistent efforts have been finally awarded ;-) HUNTER TRIALS - POSTPONED Unfortunately we have had to make the call - the Hunter Trials which was scheduled for Sunday May 15 th has been postponed with a date yet to be advised due to ground conditions. Fingers crossed for some rain!! RAFFLES WEEKEND HUNTS A massive Thank You to; Tamzin Paterson, Viana Fallaver, Rachel Vogan, Corina McVinnie, Brent Jury, and Kareen Mosby for their donations of prizes to date for the weekend raffles and thank you to all that continue to purchase tickets. RDA NEED HELP The RDA in North Canterbury are looking for Volunteers to help. During school terms 1,2 and 4 they run lessons Tuesday 2-3pm and 3-4pm, Thursday 2-3pm and 3-4pm and Saturday 11-12pm. Tipple of choice: Whisky Looking forward to: Tomorrow RECIPE OF THE MONTH Slow Cooker Bourban Chicken Place the following ingredients in a slow cooker, cook on low for 6-7 hours. Perfect to come home to after a day's hunting. 3 lbs skinless chicken thighs 1 tspn grated ginger 4 cloves minced garlic 1/2 tspn chilli flakes 1/3 cup apple juice 1 1/2 Tbsp honey 1/4 cup brown sugar 1/4 tomato sauce or ketchup 3 Tbsp cider vinegar 1/2 cup bourbon 1/4 cup soy sauce a slurry of 3 Tbsp cornflour with 3 Tbsp water Salt & pepper MEMBERS PROFILE Name: Harry Pawsey Hometown: Hawarden Earns a crust as: Farming Riding since: 1950 Productive Hound Jem Hills, the Heythrops legendary Huntsman, had a blind bitch hound, Affable. Because of her blindness, caused by distemper, she was never hunted to hounds, but became amazingly productive, having 90 pups in her lifetime.
