Hello 4-H Families! Summer is in full swing and I m hoping everyone has their fair book and fair entry form by now. If not please call our office immediately. Fair Entries are due on June 28 th. If your entry is received after that date there is a $25 per entry late fee. No entries can be accepted after July 5th. We would be happy to accept your entries now!! Your entries can be mailed to the office and we will use June 28 th postmark to determine if they are in on time. If you do this I recommend paying for a certified letter with receipt. If you drop your entry form into the mailbox outside and the mail has already been picked up for the 28 th a 29 th postmark will make all of your entries late. Those entries will incur the fee if you choose to still enter. Please take the time out of your busy summer schedule and complete them now! You can mail, fax, or walk them in. If you your entries it must be a scanned image of the entry card. Do not write them into the body of an , we will not accept them that way. If you can make a template that MATCHES the entry form that would be acceptable. If you or fax your entries it is your responsibility to call and confirm that they have been received. Again, this year the fair entry software did not print self-determined projects specific names on the entry card. If you are enrolled in welding, cake decorating or construction zone your card will probably just say self-determined. If you are not sure which of these projects you are enrolled in you can go into 4-H online yourself and look up your projects. Let our office know if you have questions. Please also look at the fair schedule because some events and judging times have been moved. There is one mistake on the schedule for Wildlife. Both Entry and Judging is Thursday, July 26 th from 3-5pm. Lots of good reminders in this issue of the chatterbox, please look at the calendar in the back to make sure you are not missing out on anything. Have a Safe and Fun 4-H Summer! Hope to see many of you at Rock Springs 4-H Camp June 13 th -16 th! ~Candis Dogs & Horses---Write down the name of your animal on your fair entry on the Breed/ Tag# line please. Rabbits---- Your rabbit breeds and corresponding three digit ID can be found on the Shawnee County website: Don t forget to include your tattoo ID on your entry form. Chickens---You will need to write down your band numbers please. Bands can be purchased at the 4-H office. All other Livestock---Please remember to include your animal s tag number. 1

The new minimum auction weight for beef is 1,000 lbs. The new minimum for goats to be sold at auction is 50 lbs. This has been changed to reflect industry standards for complete animals. The minimum weight for sheep and swine will stay the same at 100 lbs. and 220 lbs. respectively. Superintendents/Livestock Committee hold ultimate discretion. If you have any questions please contact Candis at or ext All 4-Her s planning to sell market beef, sheep, swine, goat, poultry, or rabbits at the county fair must turn in a completed market buyers form into the office by June 28th. We ask that each youth contact at least 3 potential buyers. You can call, write a letter or stop by and talk to potential buyers about the livestock sale and the animals you will be exhibiting. Contacting buyers is an important part of selling your market animals. Marketing your livestock project to potential buyers not only helps bring people to the sale but it also helps buyers understand the amount of time and energy you have put into your livestock project. We encourage youth to contact at least 1 new buyer every year. In doing this our hope is that new businesses or individuals will come and participate in the sale. The buyers forms are located in your fair book on page 59. Every buyer you turn in will be invited to attend the Family Fun Night Dinner, which will be held on Saturday, July 28nd. Please call with any questions. 2

5 State Livestock Nomination Deadline Approaching State Livestock Nominations Due June 15 All state livestock nominations must be postmarked by June 15, This includes commercial heifers, market swine, commercial gilts, market lambs, commercial ewes, and all meat goats. Families are encouraged to use the specie checklists as a guide. This is a postmark deadline, but families are encouraged to submit their nominations early to avoid missing the deadline! Market and commercial female livestock projects that will be shown at the Kansas State Fair or Kansas Junior Livestock Show must be nominated to enter and exhibit in the state shows this fall. The 2018 nomination information has been distributed to county offices and may be found on the Youth Livestock Program website. Confirmation letters will be sent to families once their nominations have been processed, and reports will regularly be posted on the Youth Livestock Program website. Families are encouraged to use one of these options to verify their nominations. A complete nomination does NOT constitute show entry. The Kansas State Fair and KJLS will release entry information to agents and through their respective websites as entry season draws near. YQCA Thing has changed a bit this year. We are having a training on June 5. For full information please check out our Shawnee County Extension Newsletter. Here is the link news/may%202018%20ext%20news.pdf 5

6 Auburn 4-H Club May Report By: Amanda Miller Success at the Annual Master Gardeners Plant Sale On Saturday, May 5th the Auburn 4-H Club was given a wonderful opportunity to get some volunteer hours in, as well as raise some money for the club at the annual Master Gardener s Plant sale. 4-Her s were able to aid their community by helping customers of the plant sale carry out their plants to their cars when the customer s purchases grew to be too heavy or too numerous for one person to carry alone. When 4-Hers weren t helping customers carry plants, they were aiding at the Auburn 4-H Club Concessions Stand, which was set up just outside of the Master Gardener s plant sale. The booth was selling a variety of homemade baked goods (with everything from homemade breads and cakes to cinnamon rolls) as well as several handmade crafts. The handmade crafts included bath bombs, hand painted lavender Mason jars, hot/cold bags and hand crafted cards. Being able to simultaneously aid the community and raise money for the Auburn 4-H Club made for a very successful day. Salute to Graduating Seniors The Auburn Club also recognized four graduating Seniors during the May Club meeting. Abby Scheideman, Amanda Miller, Kelly Palmer and Tamara McConnell were honored for their leadership and service to the Club, Shawnee County and the community. Each member also received a special gift to remind them of the 4-H pledge as then open the next Chapter in their life journey. 6

8 CALLING ALL POULTRY MEMBERs I would like to thank our 4-H poultry youth and their families for all the work they did with their 2017 poultry projects at the fair. Hopefully each of you learned a new thing or two, whether it was receiving feedback from our judge on how your poultry was scored or during your showmanship presentation. The time is fastly approaching for this years 2018 Fair and there are a couple of dates I would like to inform you of and also seeking some "helping hands". Poultry Testing for this year will be done on Tuesday evening July 10 from 5pm - 7pm at the extension office parking lot. We will actually be just inside the arena barn off of the parking lot to stay out of the direct sun, but you will still park at the extension office and you will see us set up. Please make sure that you and/or someone else with you will be able to handle and hold your birds for the testing procedure. Also, it will probably be very hot out so make sure your birds have shade and water for the ride over and back home. REMEMBER: you will not be able to show your birds in the Shawnee County Fair without having a certificate of proof that the pullorum testing was done within 3 weeks of the fairs date. If you have them tested at another location, you will still need to provide the certificate the first day of the fair prior to entering the building with your birds. This service is being provided to us again this year by the state of Kansas free of charge. Cage Set Up Day is Wednesday, July 25th from 5pm - 7pm (or sooner if we have enough helpers). We ask that all poultry families try to help out with this if at all possible. If you have any questions, please give me (Donna Braden) a call at or the extension office and they will forward me the message. 8

9 Paw Prints Club Getting Our Paws Dirty for Responsible Dog Ownership Day By: Amanda Miller This year, on Sunday, June 3 rd, the Topeka Kennel Club is hosting an event to help dog owners bond with their dogs, learn how to best care for their pets, and potentially try something new with their canine partners. It takes place out at the Lake Shawnee Shelter House #6, is free, and runs from 10 am-2 pm. There will be many informational booths and opportunities to meet different dog breeds to find the type of dog which would be most fitting for a family's lifestyle. There will also be drawings for prizes and a pulled pork lunch served for participants. As well as a free lunch there will be a flyball demo (a relay race between two teams of four dogs involving hurdles and a flyball box pedal ball launcher) and a dog agility demonstration brought by Indian Creek Club Indian Creek started their May meeting by having a Hawaiian theme. Many members dressed up with flower leis and grass skirts. During the meeting, we split up into committee groups and discussed hay bale decorations, the pancake feed, and our 48 Hours of 4-H project. We also talked about our June meeting, which will be at the pool. The whole club is excited! Also, many of our members are going to 4-H camp and Discovery Days! By Gwen VanLeeuwen, Reporter 9

10 Horse Club On Wednesday, May 9th, the Shawnee Co Horse Club held our 3rd clinic of the year. Whitney Marrant, from Missouri was the clinician. She trains in reining (which is was was worked on at the clinic) and ranch horse. We spent a lot of time in the saddle working on exercises that we were given. This was a very good instructional time and a lot was learned. We are all getting ready for the first horse show coming up in June. 10

11 RABBITS RABBITS RABBITS All rabbits will need a tattoo to show in the fair in July. If you need the rabbit tattooed please come to the monthly meetings on June 4th and July 2nd. We have asked that someone be available to tattoo, but I need to know who and how many. Please contact the Superintendent of meltingpoint@juno.com or the county extension office. Rabbit codes for the fair book have also been ed out for your rabbits breeds. If you have questions please come the the meeting this Monday and we can help you enroll in fair. Thank you Stephanie Magill Let s go dancing!! Hey 4-Hers grab your partner and come do-sa-do and promenade. Larry Crady, with the Wheatheart Squares here in Topeka, will be calling out the moves with members of the Northeast Kansas Square Dancers. Saturday, July 28th from 3 to 4pm 4-H youth will be learning the fundamentals of modern square dancing including the square dance formation, terminology, and a half dozen of the basic square dance movements. When finished they will be able to perform a basic dance. This is similar to what people would learn during the first night of square dance lessons. This is a free event for all 4-H youth, (preferable ages 12 and up). Please Fran at fmcadoo@ksu.edu or Kim at kjseeley@ksu.edu so the group knows what to plan for. 11
