Please remember not everyone suggested can be placed on a panel due to a variety of reasons however club member input is given priority. We do work with our sister cluster clubs and also have a policy not to hire the same judge for the same show 2 years in a row. Since we do share judges with the other cluster clubs, we tend to try to hire judges approved for several groups, if possible, to control expenses through judge sharing. Members provisional for any breeds are also given a priority as well as suggestions from specialty clubs for their supported entries. Special thanks to Tom for thinking to ask us if we wanted these precious treasures of our history. Jerry also has a wonderful collection of memorabilia passed to him from Keith Bates and we need some volunteers to go through things and help organize and preserve them. Please contact Jerry to volunteer. It was great seeing Tom again and talking about the past days of the club from our old show sites we remember, our 100 th show anniversary event at the World Congress Center in 1980 and our other friends who were the movers and shakers of their time who contributed so much to our history and the continuation of the traditions we still observe today. Tom was a huge contributor of his time and talents to our club in past years. He promised to come to a meeting soon and for sure the fall show. At the Christmas party Monroe McIntyre shared a precious treasure of a 1914 catalog from our shows he found in an estate sale along with a few other things from that time. He promised to copy it and help preserve it as it is very fragile now. Amazing someone kept that all these years. It was amazing seeing all the trophy donations even back then and also the many ads for dog food and other products of the day for dogs. Tim was in a serious car accident in January and still not up to par, and Lana broke her shoulder when their deck collapsed with her on it - a full story up in the air! 6 Appropriate Behavior at Dog Shows Is Key for Breeders By Allan Reznik Not all of the judging at a dog show takes place in the ring. As a breeder-exhibitor, your demeanor and interactions with others will be judged from the moment you set foot on the show grounds. Stewards, the superintendent and AKC field staff, the show committee, the media, fellow exhibitors, and, perhaps most importantly, the public, will assess and remember how you speak to them. Here is where courtesy, patience, and good sportsmanship count, as much as expert grooming of your prized exhibit. Spectators attending a show are in awe of the exquisite dogs, the sparkling trophies, and the distinguished-looking judges. They walk through the grooming area, see everyone diligently brushing and blow-drying, and honestly don t know when it s okay to approach an exhibitor and ask if they can touch your dog or take a photo. This is the time to point to a stack of business cards on your grooming table and an open photo album they can flip through. Tell them what time your breed will be judged and in what ring. If they make it back to your grooming setup for a later chat, great. If they don t, they now have your contact information to follow up with a phone call or about puppy availability. Hundreds of thousands of dollars change hands in the dog game, yet it s amazing how many longtime participants still tear out the back page of the catalog to scribble down their name and number when an interested party approaches them. Would you feel confident dealing with a lawyer or accountant who scribbled down his name and number on a slip of scrap paper? Not likely. Yet, you are potentially selling someone a puppy with a much higher price tag than the cost of doing a tax return. That calls for a professional image and great PR. Do what you can to stand out at a show, whether you are a club member or not. Make the most of your day. Does the club offer a Meet the Breeds display or a parade of purebreds in the ring during the lunch break? Volunteer to participate. It s a great showcase, not only for your breed but also for your kennel, as it distinguishes you from your many peers. An ad in the show catalog achieves the same thing. Just as people buy a souvenir program or T-shirt at a concert, they tend to think of a catalog in the same way: a memento of their day. Be sure your ad can be found in that book of memories. It s a nominal investment that can pay big dividends. You entered your well-bred dog at the show to impress the judge and take home points, a breed win, or a group placement. But remember that you want to impress the public, as well, which includes potential puppy buyers, reporters from the local newspaper and TV station, and busloads of students and schoolteachers on a class field trip. They don t give two hoots about your breed standard, but they will remember the kind breeder with the beautiful dogs who spoke knowledgeably about dog shows and made time for them to take a picture with a perfectly groomed champion. Allan Reznik has been an Afghan Hound fancier since the early 1970s and also owns and exhibits Tibetan Spaniels. He is an award-winning journalist and broadcaster, who has served as editor-inchief of several national dog publications. He appears regularly on radio and TV discussing all aspects of responsible animal ownership. Reznik is an AKC permit judge of Afghan Hounds, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, and Tibetan Spaniels. 6
7 Spaniel Elbow Fractures: Too Clean a Break Page 1 of 3 The shattered elbow in the radiograph on the right (Fig. 1) belongs to a Boykin Spaniel. There are two reasons why this fracture type is interesting: because it typically occurs during normal activities (the dog shown here was running in the back yard), and because it most commonly affects particular dog group: Spaniels. By Karine Gendron DVM DipECVDI DipACVR Assistant Professor of Diagnostic Imaging, University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine To understand these, it is useful to review how the elbow forms in the puppy. The distal humerus (the long bone in the forelimb) develops from three separate ossification centers: a medial and a lateral center which form the condyle, and a smaller medial epicondyle center (Fig. 2). Incomplete Ossification of the Humeral Condyle (IOHC) is the name of this condition in which the growth plate at the center of the distal portion of the humerus fails to fuse. Some affected dogs suffer from chronic lameness due to fragment instability. An unknown subset of affected dogs will go on to sustain spontaneous articular fractures, with devastating consequences. Notice how smooth, straight and midline the fracture is in Fig. 1, shown by the pink arrow, suggesting the growth plate between the two centers of ossification never closed. The green arrow points to new bone formation, typical of fatigue fractures, which is an attempt by the body to stabilize the bone fragments prior to their fracture. Fig. 1 Front view radiograph of the elbow of a 2.5y Boykin Spaniel. The humerus is fractured into 3 pieces. R: radius U: Ulna. Lateral is to the left on the image. Fig. 2 Elbow of a 6-week-old Rhodesian Ridgeback showing the main ossification centers, same orientation as Fig. 1. 1: medial and lateral ossification centers of the humeral condyle 3: proximal radial epiphysis The medial epicondyle center is not shown in this view. From: Hereditary Bone and Joint Diseases in the Dog. Morgan. Schluetersche (2000). 7
8 Too Clean a Break, continued Page 2 of 3 Surgeons regularly use the umbrella term of Y -or T-Y -fracture denoting the shape of the fracture itself, irrespective of its origin (traumatic vs spontaneous). IOHC often affects both elbows and is presumed hereditary, thus affected animals should have their opposite limb imaged and be removed from the breeding pool. Awareness about this condition is increasing, and with the growing availability of computed tomography (CT) in general practices is an emerging need to develop proper guidelines for selection of working stock, prebreeding screening, and the interpretation of this growth plate relative to a patient's age. Age at closure of the intracondylar growth plate has been established radiographically in exceedingly few individuals of breeds not affected with IOHC. In addition, radiographs are not sensitive for the detection of IOHC compared to CT. Our group is currently recruiting young dogs for a project aiming to determine true intracondylar growth plate closing times in healthy puppies, with MRI as a gold standard, and with CT and radiographic correlation. Twelve Spaniels and twelve non-spaniels will have their elbows evaluated at 2-week intervals, starting between the ages of 119 and 154 days, twice or until growth plate closure. Labradors and chondrodystrophic breeds (Bulldogs, Dachshunds, Beagles) and their firstgeneration mixes are excluded. Fig. 3 Post-operative radiograph of the elbow of a 2-year-old male Brittany Spaniel who sustained IOHC after jumping in a ditch. Such fractures are difficult to address surgically due to the precise anatomic relationships of the bones required for normal function. Osteoarthritis (OA) normally follows even the most careful of repairs. Fig. 4 Humeral condyle of a 121 day (4 months) old male Brittany Spaniel enrolled in our project. The image on the left is a CT, on the right is an MRI. The growth line will disappear in CT before physiologic closure, at which point the white band seen in MRI should dissipate. 8
9 Too Clean a Break, continued Page 3 of 3 It goes without saying that puppies have to be anesthetized for these examinations, which include 4 radiographs, one CT and in the second or later examinations an MRI. To ensure the most efficient process, anesthesia and imaging are performed and monitored by Faculty and registered technicians only. More information about this project may be obtained on the College of Veterinary Medicine UGA Clinical Trials web page: researc h/ webpage_gendron_puppy_iohc_study.p df With the help of canine enthusiasts, we will acquire data about the maturation processes of the canine elbow, be able to determine whether the fusion of the intracondylar growth plate differs in any way between normal Spaniels without IOHC and other breed groups, and provide the veterinary community tools for the detection, management and eradication of IOHC. Fig. 5 Positioning of a 154-day (5 months) Pit Bull mix for elbow CT. Mrs. Billie Rae King on the right is a registered veterinary technician. Dr. Michael Perlini on the left is a first-year resident in Diagnostic Imaging, and co-investigator on this project. In Memoriam: Dolores Weiss In a small memorial celebration for one of our long time and beloved Agility workers, Dolores Weiss, Memorial Stools were presented to the Atlanta Kennel Club and the Chattahoochee Weimaraner Club by Dolores' husband, Dan Weiss. Dan commissioned our member, Tamara Brower, to design and paint the stools, and we feel the stools were a nice tribute to a wonderful person that is sorely missed by so many in the Agility community. July 9th marked the 1 year anniversary of her passing, so it was a nice tribute to Dolores to have the stools presented at our July Agility Trial in Perry, GA. Thank you Dan Weiss and Tamara Brower for the lovely stools that will be cherished for many years to come. 9
