1 Vet Clinic Manager Information VAAR is excited to offer the opportunity to manage our clinic in Hoi An for qualified vets. While we would like to take on anyone who would like to come, it is important for both VAAR and the vet to have a positive experience and for this reason we try to make sure that we will be a good match before the volunteer arrives. We are quite busy here at the clinic and with all the work we do, we need to have managers here that will give us more time to develop the organization's mission, not take away our already limited time. We have an application for prospective vets and the information in this packet can help you to decide if working with VAAR is right for you. Work The vet clinic manager is responsible for overseeing day to day clinic operations, management of staff and volunteers, maintaining facilities and equipment, interaction with local community, providing medical care for all clinic patients and, alongside shelter manager, providing proper care and medical treatment for all shelter animals. It is the clinic manager s responsibility to perform and assist in all daily activities of the clinic operation and to to ensure the work is done to a high standard. Daily work at the clinic usually involves in house vet nurse consultations (worming, flea/ tick prevention, vaccinations, health

2 checks), house visits, helping vets taking care of both surgical and non surgical patients, keeping medical notes up to date, shopping for medical supplies at a pharmacy nearby and making sure that the clinic is clean and tidy. You will be working with our Vietnamese vet intern. She is a great girl and a quick learner. She is very helpful with cleaning and we would like to show her what Western standards of veterinary medicine are. This means you will also be teaching her on daily basis by working alongside her. The clinic manager may or may not be available during your stay, but all questions will be answered and there is always somebody around to assist you in looking after her training. Clinic opening hours: 08:30AM 5PM You are required to work 6 days a week within clinic opening hours and answer emergency phone number at any time if vets not available. We have a six month minimum stay. It is unfortunately not worth it for both the staff or our volunteers to have managers stay for under this amount of time. Responsibilities Perform and assist in all daily activities of the clinic operation. Perform and assist in consults, surgeries, inpatients treatment and medical care for shelter animals. Training of new employees and supervising ongoing performance of clinic staff and volunteers. Assist with and provide information for animal care vets/staff/volunteers performance evaluations. Assist in the decision making process for animal adoption according to Director s guidelines. Handle decision making process of euthanasia for terminally ill animals. Handle problem situations including clinic maintenance, communications with hired handymen and day to day management of facilities. Maintain record keeping for all consults, inpatients, surgeries and shelter animals. Maintain aspects of income outcome record keeping including regular monthly expenses. Assist with community outreach and promote spey/neuter surgeries, basic animal handling, proper nutrition and provide basic pet owner knowledge. Perform all daily responsibilities in absence of the Director. Requirements Degree in Veterinary medicine from an AVMA, RCVS, AVA, or SAVA recognized university program and a valid practice license in your last country of residence. Experience traveling abroad in developing countries. Minimum of 1 year of management experience.

3 Minimum of 2, preferably 3+ years of experience working in a veterinary clinic. Experience in small animal medicine is essential, large/farm animal experience is beneficial. Knowledge of computers and applicable software (MS Office Suite and social media) Ability to deal with difficult animals effectively. Physical: moderate to heavy work with variable amounts of standing, walking, bending, reaching. Able to lift, push or carry objects or animals weighing up to 25kg. Knowledge and understanding of animal handling and veterinary clinic equipment. Ability to drive a motor scooter Documents we require prior to your arrival include CV and letter of good standing as well as references from minimum one previous practice. Benefits and Salary Free onsite accommodations at the vet clinic in Hoi An 500 USD per month 3 weeks paid vacation per year (2 weeks consecutive) Minimum one year contract Accommodations and Food Accommodation is provided upstairs at the clinic. Your room has a double bed, a clothes rack, air conditioning and a private bathroom. There is a room for sitting and watching TV or lounging on a couch. We have free wi fi at the clinic and it is fairly fast. There is also internet in town. 3G is generally pretty reliable though. While the clinic is a home for the manager as well as volunteers, its primary purpose is providing high standards veterinary care for regular daily patients, inpatients undergoing treatment, and emergency treatment. This means that when an animal is in need and/or needs to be cared for all night, this takes priority. While we do enjoy relaxing and having a few drinks out or at home, if you are looking for a party, you should look for alternative accommodations on those nights. We are out in the countryside and people here go to bed quite early, as we also do since we get up early to take care of the animals. You are, of course entitled to a day off and going out the night before is fine as long as you do not bring the after party to the clinic. Guests are not allowed under any circumstances. Food is at your own cost. There are many cheap places to eat and we have cooking facilities at the clinic. The organisation promotes veganism, therefore we do not allow any animal products to be consumed on the property. You are free to eat whatever you like off site and there are many restaurants in town. We hope you understand that this ties in with the mission of VAAR (protecting animals and improving the welfare of animals in Vietnam).

4 What You Need to Bring Please bring weather appropriate clothing, plus a set of scrubs. We often wear flip flops, but good sturdy running/hiking type shoes are also good when it is raining or when driving a motorbike. If you plan on riding a motorbike, we request that you have solid shoes for that and plan on buying a good helmet. We take road safety very seriously. Please bring your own towel as well. If you can bring any extra medical supplies, pet supplies or other items that we have a hard time finding here and that you would like to donate to VAAR, we would really appreciate it. Please ask us before you come about what we are in need of at that moment as our needs change depending on recent donations. Living in Hoi An Information about the area Hoi An is 30km south of Da Nang, a large city with an international airport that has direct flights to Singapore, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur and Seoul as well as quick connections to Hanoi and Saigon. While Vietnam is not a highly developed country, volunteers will find almost everything they need in Hoi An as a big tourist attraction and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Da Nang is not far away and whatever you can't find in Hoi An, you can probably get in Da Nang. It has picturesque beaches for swimming and surfing and a riverside that has many beautiful restaurants and historic buildings. The city is generally very safe, though we ask volunteers to still be cautious as usual with their belongings and money in public. The food is great (especially for vegans!) and the people are friendly. We believe Hoi An is simply a very nice place to live. During your time off, you are welcome to visit the many sites in the area and take a motorbike or bicycle tour of the beautiful countryside, mountains, and beaches. There is scuba diving and snorkeling at nearby Cham Island during the Spring and Summer and that can be either a day trip or an overnight stay on the island. There is always plenty of time on a day off to get some sun at the nearby beach too. Visas You will need a visa to enter Vietnam. Most expats live here on tourist visas. You can get them for 1 3 months, single and multi entry, and they can be renewed from Hoi An. If flying in, you can apply for a visa on arrival ( evisa.org) or get your visa prior to leaving your home country.

5 Insurance and Medical VAAR requires that you have travel insurance. People get sick and hurt here just like at home, and for the most part, Vietnam can handle the average medical emergency. However, for anything serious, you will want to be evacuated. Please make sure you have this on your travel insurance policy. Motorbike accidents are common and we generally get a little cut and banged up here at the clinic, so just be sure you are protected first. We are not in an area where malaria is common, but people here do frequently contract Dengue fever in the rainy season for which there is no protective measure you can take. We recommend having vaccinations for Hepatitis A and B, Tetanus, Typhoid Fever, and Japanese Encephalitis (optional). Rabies vaccination is required. Weather The weather here is usually hot and humid, but in the winter/rainy season (October through January) it can be cold (15 C/ 60F) and wet and you may not enjoy being in a tropical paradise during a time when most people are just chilly and miserable. That being said, we love it all year long and hope you will put up with the weather and come in the winter anyway! Transportation You will need to arrange transportation of some type to get from the town to the clinic. We recommend renting either a motorbike for roughly 50,000 80,000 VND ($3 4) per day or renting a bicycle for 20,000 VND ($1) per day. Traffic gets quite bad here in town so we do not recommend renting a scooter with no previous riding experience. Taxis are about 70,000 VND one way. We cannot provide transport back and forth into town for volunteers but will help you find a good place to rent a vehicle from. The clinic is a 10 minute motorbike ride or a minute bike ride. The clinic is half way between the beach and the town. We need the right people helping us so please only apply if you are sure you will be happy with the work that is required and can commit to the full length of your placement. If you have not been put off by anything that is written here, then great, you are just the type of person we are looking for.
