Kellie Dahlberg accepts the Sunspryte Award as mom Cathy looks on. The Annual Meeting and Awards Banquet held the evening of March 16 th at LaTom s in Ybor City was a great time for all. For the second year, the Silent Auction was a success and the food was wonderful. Of course, the companionship was the best. Anthony awarded the President s Award to Steve Adams. For a list of the winners and more photos see Pages 4 &5. From the Corresponding Secretary Ellen Axelrod Meeting Notice The next board meeting will be held at 7:30 pm on Monday May 12th at the Sweet Tomatoes Restaurant on South Dale Mabry Highway in Tampa. The next general meeting will be held Monday, May 19 th at the East Bay Animal Hospital, 3445-A East Bay Drive in Largo following the 7:30 PROGRAM: Virginia Antia on Manchester Terriers and the Staffordshire Bull Terriers. 2 GENERAL MEETING MINUTES PRESIDENT S MESSAGE The General Meeting of the Tampa Bay Terrier Club was held at LaTam s Restaurant in Ybor City Wednesday, April 16th, 2008 during the Annual Dinner and Awards Banquet. President Anthony Lopez called the meeting to order at 8:35 pm. There were twenty eight Club members and prospective member Lynn Koozer in attendance. A motion was made and passed to dispense with all but the necessary business of the Club. Membership Chair Lynne Whitney read Linda Townsend s application for associate membership. Linda was voted into the Club. Elections Recording Secretary Conni Adams cast one vote for the Slate of Officers presented by the Nominating Committee officers are as follows: President Conni Adams Vice President Reatha Omodio Treasurer Jim Omodio Recording Secretary Tracey Wells Corresponding Secretary Ellen Axelrod Board of Directors Joe Whitney, Mike Perez, Anthony Lopez & Marsha Buchanan Anthony turned the meeting over to Conni, who presented him with an engraved decanter from the Club thanking for his years serving as President. The meeting adjourned at 8:45pm to begin the awards program. Marj Lorand for Tracey Wells, Recording Secretary I must start by thanking Anthony for the six years he served so ably as President of the Tampa Bay Terrier Club. He led the Club successfully and steadily through that time as it continued to grow and thrive. I have huge footsteps to follow! Last month I attended an emergency meeting of the FAKC, during which Patti Strand from the NAIA Trust spoke. Mandatory Spay Neuter legislation is being presented continually all over the country and it is clear that we must be aware of what s happening here in the Bay area and the State of Florida. There really are people who believe that pets are manmade and should be wild like wolves and panthers, only to be observed, not sheltered. They are working diligently to make that a reality. Still, I believe that many of the people who favor the MSN laws are being misled by false statistics citing the overpopulation problem and the great numbers of dogs and cats being euthanized. In actuality, the number of pets being euthanized is declining nationwide, and consists mostly of feral cats and kittens and dogs that are unadoptable due to temperament and/or illness. More and more no-kill shelters are being organized to place dogs in lieu of killing them. There s a great website you may want to check out, m:80/. It s a lot of reading, but very informative about what is happening around the country. Another problem we as breeders have is differentiating ourselves from puppy mills and backyard breeders. We must emphasize that we are knowledgeable about our dogs, which we breed thoughtfully after much research and genetic testing, and that we stand behind the dogs we breed. Every breed club has an active rescue organization in place to assist in placement when there is a problem. These are things that help us stand out from the mass producers and the Let s breed my dog to your bitch and sell puppies! source for puppies. We have to find ways to inform the public of these points. That s the good thing about Responsible Dog Ownership Day and the Florida State Fair. We need to do as much as we can at events like these. I ll get off my soapbox now and just say that this Club was formed so we could have fun with our Terriers together. So let s do that! Don t forget the program this month before the meeting.
