He has left me with big shoes to fill. Second, I appreciate the opportunity to continue to move this club forward. Now to the order at hand. We have a Specialty coming up in 8 months. Conni Adams is the Chairperson, please contact her or give her your cooperation when she calls you to take on a job. If you have not gotten involved with the Specialty before now is your chance. You don t have to chair a commitee just volunteer to help. There are several jobs that only take a little bit of time can be done after you finish getting your dogs ready to show but are a big help. We will use the same caterer and I m sure again this year John will surprise us with something different and delicious. Our next meeting is Saturday June 7 th during the Lakeland shows. Please make every effort to attend. The club will provide drinks and a snack. See you there. Linda Meeting Notice The next meeting of the KBTC of CF will be held on Saturday June 7, 2008 at the Lakeland Winter Haven Kennel Club shows at Lakeland Center following the breed judging. The recent AKC Pointing Breeds Gun Dog Championship held outside Reno, NV with nearly 200 entries demonstrates that the rich tradition and pleasure of watching dogs work in the field is alive and well. The competitors that just concluded this championship event represent the culmination of years of training to create the ultimate hunting companion. A new owner's first exposure to field work is often through the AKC Hunting Test program. There are three AKC Hunting Tests, for pointing breeds, retrievers, and spaniels. All tests are designed to showcase what a dog and hunter may be required to do in a normal day's hunt and also focus on each breed's strengths. The first AKC Hunting Tests were held in Today, AKC licenses more than 550 clubs that host 900 events with more than 50,000 entries in all three programs. Hunting Tests are set up to measure dogs hunting ability against an established performance standard at three different levels - Junior, Senior and Master. The noncompetitive nature of this test makes it inviting for many participants. Hunting Tests are planned so that a dog must receive a certain number of passing scores in order to be awarded a title for that level. The tests grow increasingly difficult as one progresses. This allows handlers to challenge themselves and their dogs at a higher level as they gain knowledge and experience. All three hunting test programs include a Juniors Program that will allow dogs with a Master or Senior title to be entered at the Junior Hunter level with a junior handler - in essence allowing a seasoned dog to help show young people (ages 9 to 18) the ropes. For more on the Junior Handler in Performance Events visit: ex.cfm. One often hears the saying "form follows function." AKC Conformation events demonstrate form, while AKC Performance Events provide an opportunity for a breed to demonstrate their function. These two events, when taken together, enable breed supporters to maintain the true essence of the breed In addition to field trials and hunting tests, AKC Performance Events include lure coursing, herding, earthdog events and the working dog sport. All together almost 100 breeds are eligible to participate in performance events. Not only are performance events a great place to work your dog, but an excellent opportunity to build sportsmanship among fellow dog enthusiasts, and enjoy magnificent outdoor venues. I urge you to consider entering your dog in a performance event. Your dog will enjoy it and so will you. To learn more about AKC performance events, please visit: m. 5 AKC Canine Health Foundation Media Alert American Kennel Club Canine Health Foundation Announces Genetic Test for Canine Degenerative Myelopathy [Thursday, May 8, 2008] Canine Degenerative Myelopathy (DM) is an adult-onset, progressive spinal cord disease causing weakness in the hind limbs and eventually paraplegia. Dog owners usually elect euthanasia within a year of diagnosis; however, when euthanasia is delayed flaccid paralysis and widespread loss of muscle mass occur. Because common acquired compressive spinal cord diseases can mimic DM, a definitive diagnosis currently can only be accomplished postmortem by histopathologic observation of the spinal cord. Drs. Gary Johnson and Joan Coates at the Animal Molecular Genetics Laboratory of the University of Missouri and Drs. Claire Wade and Kerstin Lindblad-Toh at the Broad Institute of MIT/Harvard and their colleagues have identified a DNA mutation that is a major risk factor for development of degenerative myelopathy in dogs. The research project was funded by the AKC Canine Health Foundation, American Boxer Charitable Foundation, Pembroke Welsh Corgi Club of America, Rhodesian Ridgeback Club of the United States, French Bulldog Club of America, and French Bulldog Rescue League. A DNA test will soon be available for breeders and pet owners, along with information about what the test can and cannot tell them. The test clearly identifies dogs that are clear (have 2 normal copies of the gene), those who are carriers (have one normal copy of the gene and one mutated copy of the gene), and those who are at much higher risk for developing DM (have 2 mutated copies of the gene). However, having two mutated copies of the gene does not necessarily result in disease. Information about the benefits of this test, testing forms and instructions, and suggestions for using the test to reduce the frequency of DM will soon be available online here. Click here to support important research at the AKC Canine Health Foundation and please consider a recurring gift. Contact: Erica Kitchen Development Associate AKC Canine Health Foundation
6 CH Everglory's Sudden Impact, ROM This was taken on the day he passed away. Harry died today Saturday, March 29, 2008 around 4:30. Harry was the best of friends to me. He was a devoted and loyal guy that will never be bested as the dog that I want walking beside me. Harry had a "not so good " few days. He was not eating well(this was a bit of a on and off again thing) and he was getting weaker in the rear. He was jumping on the bed in Dec. and then the first of January he had a couple of falls and just never fully recovered. So today, Harry had a grand day. We got up and walked him. He ate his breakfast (all of it) and then he spent the best part of the morning and early afternoon getting treats. For the past few months, I have been sitting in the swing with Harry in my lap, head on my shoulders, every afternoon. We would usually swing for about ten minutes. Today at 4, my friend(who is also my Vet.) came over and we (Dr. Mike, her husband, my husband, Harry and me) went out to the swing. I sat in the swing with my feet up and Harry in my lap. His head was snuggled up against my shoulder and neck. He kissed me. And we swang... Nancy 6
