Our Mission is to promote and protect quality and versatility in the purebred Dutch Shepherd, to educate members and others about the breed, to encourage the highest standards of ownership and breeding, and to strive to bring the breed s natural qualities to perfection. FROM THE EDITOR This is a very busy time for the club. The Dutch Shepherd breed is moving to AKC Miscellaneous group January 1, and that means more people are going to be interested in the breed and they will be asking for information and education. In the last couple of months, we already have had 6 new puppy imports, 2 rough hairs, 2 long hairs, and 2 short hairs. And in a couple of weeks, our long awaited litter of short hairs will finally be born in Michigan. Coming up on September 17 in Raleigh is the AKC flagship Responsible Dog Ownership (RDO) day. Kent Rupprecht has been manning our booth at the event for the last 3 years, and is always looking for somebody to join him and his girl Luci. It's a fun easy day of talking to people about the Dutch Shepherd. There is time for you to wander about and enjoy the other events. So, you aren t glued to the booth the entire day. The hours are 9 am to 3 pm. Kent can fill you in. Our annual show is coming up in September. I finally have the forms for the herding instinct/ seminar, and the premium is ready, so you can start sending in your entries, now. The herding form is in the back of this newsletter. I am really looking forward to seeing our dogs with sheep. If you are in my position, we don t get much opportunity to work with livestock. And the club is officially signed up for the Meet the Breeds event in Orlando, Florida, again this year. So far, there will be one FSS Open Show offered on Friday December 16. I will keep people informed if any more shows are added. There is definitely the demand for more Open Shows, and people are trying to make it happen. The AKC invitational week and championship events is a fun time for dog lovers. There really is too much to describe in a small space, but there are performance, and conformation events, vendors, exhibits, meet the breeds, and lots of demonstrations. Finally, everybody should have received an about the 2017 Dutch Shepherd calendar. I know you all take photos of your beautiful dogs, so find your favorite and send it in. Proceeds go to help fund our annual show.

PAGE 5 BRAGS! Meghan Mather and Blackfrost's Great Orion Nebula (Elko) Elko earned his CGC today!! Pretty proud of him! It wasn't the prettiest routine. He did good considering I've been traveling for most of the last 4 months for work. So he's had a big break from training and structured routine. His friendliness and wiggiliness made it a close call on a few of the exercises. Now I know where we need to start when we get back to training this month and going for his BH is definitely not this year Carole Goetzelmann and Vrouw Alvinne Lexke van het Cluyn s Erf Lyekka won Best of Breed Saturday June 18 at UKC Premier with an entry of 8 DS. Yes, the photographer messed up. On Sunday she won best Champion. I was very proud of her, especially since there were so many nice long hairs entered, and my handling isn t the best, either. Sunday s judge told me she heard people talking about a Black Laekenois at the show. I can t tell you how many times people stopped me to ask my dogs breed(s). I also had my Laekenois with me and most people just assumed they were both the same breed. That s part of the fun of going to shows, though. Tracy McDade Kaecker and Quilla and Euro Dutchies done good! July 9 and 10 at the UKC show in Peoria, Illinois, Quilla and Euro had a great weekend. Euro was 6 months and 1 day the first day we showed him. Their tally: Quilla (Tarita's Quilla Bewyched Me): 4 - Bests of Breed 2 - Group Group 3 and 1 - Group 4. Euro (Jetta's Jafar v. d. Zuidendijk): 2 - Bests of Breed 1 - Group 2 and 1- Group 4. We're especially proud of Euro as this was his first time in the ring and he handled everything like an old pro. And since Frank had to work, Euro got handed off to total strangers each time he went back in for breed.
PAGE 6 BRAGS! Blackfrost s Eighth Star True North and Ella-Kate Mickelson Deja earned her first agility title this weekend! (April 23,24) This was our first ever outdoor trial and she was pretty slow, but I think she gained confidence as the day progressed! Each run was a little better and she just made time (it's probably good her nose is so long!) in her last run to earn her Novice Jumpers title! Deja earned her Nose Work I title on May 15! She also had the third fastest time for her interior search! Kristine Weinberger and Blackfrost's the Great Dark Rift (Nakoda) Kristine is proud to report that Nakoda has not destroyed anything in over a month! UKC Top Ten Dutch Shepherds as of July 22 Members have two dogs currently in the UKC Top Ten. Carole Goetzelmann s CH Vrouw Alvinne Lexke van het Cluyn s Erf is currently at number 3, and Tracy Kaecker s CH Tarita s Quilla Bewyched Me is tied at number 10.
PAGE 7 BRAGS! Milan Hess and It Is Berlioz (Tonic) Congratulations on your new UKC Champion on June 25! And also congratulations on your TDX (Tracking Dog Excellent) and TDU (Tracking Dog Urban) AKC Tracking Titles! Kent Rupprecht and Dutch Masters' BB's Lucille (Luci) Luci passed the test for her AKC Canine Good Citizen on May 11, Congratulations! Liz Rose and Blackfrosts Keweenaw Night Sky LH (Keen) Keen's first road trip to Michigan from Florida. He took everything in stride, 3 days of traveling and staying in a pop-up camper. Puppy Star! And no we didn't let him drive!
PAGE 8 INTERNATIONAL MEETING OF THE BREED CLUBS Carole Goetzelmann On July 3 I attended a meeting of the international Dutch Shepherd breed clubs, hosted by The Netherlands. Countries represented were, The Netherlands, Germany, France, Luxembourg, Belgium, Switzerland and the USA. Topics focused on, genetic diversity, health, and breeding rules across country borders. One issue discussed was the problems of breeding between countries. The European breed clubs have breeding rules that must be obeyed, otherwise registration is denied for the puppies. If you would like to breed your dog with a dog in another country, you have to obey both country's rules. For example, in The Netherlands a dog cannot be bred more than four times in it's life. In Germany, dogs must carry two copies of the brindle gene, or they are not allowed to be bred. So, it was hoped that the breed clubs could move closer to having similar, and possibly, less restrictive in come cases, breeding rules. This can also present a problem if somebody in the USA would like, for example, to use a Dutch dog as a sire. If the dog has already been bred four times, it wouldn't be allowed to be used in the USA, either. That particular rule is just one rule that is aimed to increase genetic diversity of the breed. It was encouraged by the Dutch club to apply this rule to all countries, at least for males. It was discussed that the genetic test for the brindle gene cannot be trusted, and studies are still underway at the lab to learn exactly what other gene is responsible for brindle. Because of the unreliability, many labs have stopped performing, or accepting samples for, the test. It was agreed that it is better to have the test done, because it can still be useful. But be aware that it might be possible to still have non-brindle puppies. Noted that FCI regulations require that dogs being x-rayed for hip dysplasia evaluation must be under sedation. This would affect us if one of our dogs will be used in Europe as a sire. Also, the FCI compatible ISAG DNA profiles can be performed by Animal Genetics in the USA. The AKC DNA profile is not compatible with the FCI profile because different markers are chosen. In The Netherlands, all puppies must be DNA verified to the parents before registration papers are issued. Some other countries test only a sampling of the puppies born. It was suggested that the DNA be run for all puppies to also help with genetic diversity compatibility for breeding. However, this is an additional cost for puppies that might be neutered anyway. There are known to be four dogs who suffered from Degenerative Myelopathy, and a "small number" of dogs who suffer due to Lumbosacral Transitional Vertebrae. The German club suggests to require testing for both diseases before breeding is allowed. Others argued that there were too few dogs affected to start requiring testing for all dogs. Which brought up the question, why do we not have an international database to share health and genetic information worldwide? There was a volunteer to set up such a database. Vasculitis disease and autoimmune diseases were brought up by the German club. The cause in the cases stated was suspected to be environmental, rather than hereditary. The Dutch breed club has undertaken a genetic diversity study with the Finish laboratory, Genoscoper (MyDogDNA), and preliminary results were presented. 140 markers for common hereditary diseases frequently occurring in herding breeds were checked and none were found in the Dutch Shepherds submitted. It was stressed that this is the best argument for keeping our breed as pure as possible. The cost of the test is per dog, in addition to the for the marker profile. The Dutch Shepherd diversity was shown as compared to the entire herding dog population. Results were the short hair is the most genetically varied, and the long hair much less. The wire hair is in a very precarious position, with the dogs being too closely related to each other. It was emphasized the importance of crossing the wire hairs with short hairs. (The FCI intervariety breeding requirements were discussed in the October 2014 newsletter.) Before everybody goes and starts crossing their dogs with short hairs, I want to point out that the dogs being breed undergo thorough health and temperament testing, and their backgrounds are verified. The offspring are evaluated before being bred to the next generation to ensure the best type and health moving forward.
PAGE 9 INTERNATIONAL MEETING OF THE BREED CLUBS continued Moving on, the last item, the university in Utrecht has been studying the health of purebred dogs. The Dutch Shepherd was among the first four breeds studied. Over three years they collected information from veterinarians. They received so few reports on the breed that they could not come to any conclusion. Which to me is a good thing. Of course, there is no breed warden in the USA, and no limits or requirements on breeding. However, it is a good idea to consider the merit of the regulations put forth by other countries. The world grows smaller every day, and puppies go back and forth over the ocean all the time. Their concerns are our concerns. Overusing males has been a huge problem in other breeds. Linebreeding is almost thought of as standard, from what I read. Neither is good for genetic diversity, and all breeds are going to hit the diversity wall someday, probably sooner than they think. UC Davis has started offering genetic diversity studies and some breeds are taking advantage of it with surprising results. I m very glad that the Dutch have started studying the situation and have a plan. Photo: a first generation crossing of a short hair and a rough hair. Photograph by M. Imming. RAINBOW BRIDGE Sadly, I have to report the loss of Carol Day s beloved rough hair, Colby (Colbij van Brabantstad). Colby was ten years old.

PAGE 11 Our 2016 show will be an AKC FSS Open Show for Dutch Shepherds only. All entries must have an AKC registration number (foreign numbers are not allowed). AKC Certificate of Merit points will be awarded to the winner (Best of Breed) and the Best of Opposite Sex. Open Show judging cannot be by coat-type. However, after the show is over the plan is to have additional judging to determine the Best of Breed and Best Opposite Sex of the remaining coat types. And we will continue to offer a Best Altered category if there is interest. The show and judge has been approved by the AKC. Event No: Our judge is Ms. Bernadette F. Biasi. Her initial breed is Shetland Sheepdogs, and she is a provisional judge for the Belgian Shepherd breeds, Corgis, and Collies. She has received our initial judge s education materials and is looking forward to judging our dogs. The show is just about 5 months away and the show premium will be available in the next month or so. Until then below you will find a list of nearby hotels that allow dogs. 13 PAGE 13 DUTCH SHEPHERD HERDING INSTINCT TEST / HERDING EVENT SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 24, Tester/Trainer: Carolyn Wilki, an all-breed herding trainer, has tested over 2,000 dogs of all breeds. She has trained dogs and handlers to over 150 herding titles. She competes with her own Border Collies and German Shepherd Dogs and has trialed on arena type courses, ISDS type courses, tending courses, on sheep and on ducks. Carolyn has been to Germany multiple times to watch dogs herding sheep and has seen German Shepherds and at least one Dutch Shepherd tend 600 sheep in the fields of Bavaria. Instinct Test Description Dogs will be given approximately 30 minutes to demonstrate their herding prowess. Some dogs (for example, especially if they are young pups) will benefit from less time. Dogs will be tested for fetching, driving, and tending abilities. The owner will be handling the dog along with Carolyn, and will have an opportunity to learn about beginner herding and livestock control. The basic goals of an instinct test are to show your dog that the dog has the power to move livestock and that moving livestock is fun and to show us behaviors in your dog that would be useful for further herding training. In order to pass and receive a certificate, dogs must show at least 5 minutes of sustained interest in sheep, natural behaviors useful to some herding style, and some responsiveness to handling. Whether a dog has passed or not, each dog will receive a written evaluation. During the test, the dog may be outside the test pen, inside a test pen with sheep, or outside the pen with handler and sheep inside. The dog may be dragging a long line, not dragging a long line, dragging a four foot leash, not wearing anything, etc. depending on what the tester thinks the dog needs to perform his/her best. Dogs first are introduced to penned sheep 4 sheep or 40 sheep with the dog outside the pen. Many dogs can be tested and passed without actually entering the pen with sheep. If the dog requires additional stimulation by chasing stock without a barrier between, the dog (on or off leash, as appropriate) will be tested with livestock inside a 32, 40, 50, 100 square or round diameter pen or in a 50 x100 or 100 x 200 arena pen or in a 10 acre field marked with furrows. If a dog is too intimidated by sheep, we will try to coax the herding instinct behaviors using ducks instead. MORNING: HERDING INSTINCT TEST (NON-AKC TEST) OR TRAINING PERIOD Fee: $65 prepaid Start Time: 7:30 AM Herding Instinct Test: In the instinct test, as well as in the training periods, positive reinforcement training techniques are used. Dogs may be restrained with a dragging long line or kept behind fence barriers, as appropriate. Every dog tested receives a written evaluation. Puppies should be no younger than 6 months of age. No upper age limit. Dogs should have useful sight and hearing and be physically able to trot/move normally. Each handler and dog tested will be given approximately a half hour with tester/trainer Carolyn Wilki & sheep or ducks. Leash your dog! Dress your dog in all his/her normal collars, including at least a flat buckle collar. Have a mid-back or sled dog harness available for use if you can. No e-collars. Please pick up after your dog. Feed & water dog as usual! Bring dog treats that have high value for your dog ówe might use them (or not) during the test or in the training period. Please wear/ bring weather/farm suitable clothes. Bring bug spray, sun block if appropriate. Handlers with dogs who are already in herding training should describe in writing what type of stock and set-up they would like to use (type, number of stock, size of arena, size of field) and briefly describe what their training objective will be during that half hour. End time: ~ 12:00 PM Followed by 10 Minute video of Sheep Tending in Germany. AFTERNOON HERDING TRAINING CLINIC: Fee $130 pre-paid; $20 lecture only Start Time: 12:30 or 1 PM (depending on morning entries) End Time: 4:00 pm (sooner, if fewer dogs) 1-2 PM: Introductory Lecture on Herding and Tending Fundamentals At least 2 opportunities on livestock per dog.
