(Bill) Hefner VA Medical Center's rural health team will provide free flu shots to eligible veterans in the Personnel Training Room on the 1st floor of the Union County Government Center at 500 N. Main Street in Monroe on Wednesday, Oct. 17 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Shots will be available for all veterans currently using VA health care and to those veterans possessing a DD-214 and a valid photo ID. All former and current military members are encouraged to attend. VA staff will also provide health care registration, education and information services to all non-registered veterans and assist in completing enrollment applications, requesting DD Form 214s, and initiating MyHealtheVet online services. Give Ancestry.com Library Edition a try. This free two-hour class is designed for beginning users of Ancestry.com and will focus on census research using the 1940 census and prior years. The Union County Animal Services Bureau will hold a rabies clinic for dogs and cats at Tractor Supply in Monroe on Saturday, Sept. 29 from 9 a.m a.m. The price will be $10 (cash only) for rabies vaccinations. Microchips will also be offered. N.C. state law requires the owner of every dog and cat over four months old to have their animal vaccinated against rabies. Also, Animal Services has partnered with the Humane Society of Charlotte for low-cost spay/neuter services. Pet owners can preregister to have their animal spayed or neutered on Saturday at Tractor Supply. Applications and fees will be taken by the Charlotte Humane Society on Saturday, and pet owners will be given a date for surgery. On the day of their pet's surgery, a transport truck provided by the Humane Society of Charlotte will meet owners with their pets at the Union County Animal Shelter at 3340 Presson Road in Monroe.
