3 June Junior Leaders All 4-H Junior Leaders are invited to Advisor Barry Jolliff's Barn on June 4th at 6 pm for the annual Junior Leaders Year End Party and Hot Dog Roast. There will be games, swimming, and food. Please bring a dish, chips, or dessert to share. Barry's Barn is located at 760 E. Hutton Rd. Wooster, OH. 4-H Project Deadline Reminders June 1st - Animal IDs, for ALL beef, dog, horse and swine projects must be submitted into oh.4honline.com s animal ID tab for each member. Visit wayne.osu.edu/help for help pages and more detailed instructions for what needs to be entered for each species. June 1st - Ohio 4-H care and possession rule: All animals exhibited must be in the complete possession and continual care of the exhibitor on and after June 1 st of the current year. The exception is steers and market poultry; the effective date of ownership is January 1st of the current year for steers and the poultry deadlines are listed in the Jr. Fair Book and the project guidelines. Ownership of an animal will be considered lost if after June 1 st of the current year the animal has been consigned or sold through an auction or any other type of transaction, even if the exhibitor buys back their animal. June 1st - all project changes completed: Any project changes must be made with the Extension office (either in writing or by phone). This includes correcting a member s online enrollment. Projects cannot be added after April 1st, only changed within project areas as below. After June 1st, no project changes will be allowed, as the State 4-H Office requires that all members have their projects selected. For an example, a member who enrolled by April 1 st with a breeding sheep, but intended to sign up for a market lamb is able to contact the Extension office and make the change. If that same member signed up for a market hog project, but intended to sign up for a market lamb, he is unable to make that change. Likewise if a member enrolled in Snack Attack! and wants to change to Star Spangled Foods (beginner to intermediate level cooking project) this is allowed. They would not be able to change from Snack Attack to Let s Explore the Outdoors. August 1st - All animal ID s, including pictures and forms, for ALL dairy, goat, poultry, rabbit and sheep must be submitted into oh.4honline.com s animal ID tab for each member. THIS MUST BE DONE BEFORE A MEMBER MAKES FAIR ENTRIES. Visit wayne.osu.edu/help for help pages and more detailed instructions for what needs to be entered for each species. August 1st - All fair entries must be submitted in the fair entry system via waynejrfair.fairentry.com system. More details and instructions to do this will be available when premium books are picked up by organizational advisors during June junior fair office hours. Reminder: QA must be complete by July 19th. If a livestock member has not yet attended, there are opportunities at the (dairy and goat) clinics or they must attend the Last Chance Quality Assurance on July 19th and pay $25.00 or they will not be able to participate at fair. Project Guidelines and Updates Project updates and guidelines are available for each of the project books. We include these in the organizational advisor s club packet and on our website: All livestock and some beginner projects will have printed guideline sheets included in the book, but all others will be available online. FCS and still project guidelines will be available online. Hugh Kline 4-H Endowment Grants Application Deadline Extended to June 1 st. This is a great opportunity for your club or committee to apply for funds to help with an activity or to purchase supplies or materials that could help enhance a program you have going on this year. Applications are available online at

Correction for Uniform Rules for Horse Shows Book Recently the State 4-H Office discovered an error in the pattern listed on page 55 the new Uniform Rules for 4-H Horse Shows book that was released this year. The state 4-H office attempted to correct this error by placing stickers on page 55 in the book overtop of the old pattern. However, some books had already shipped out before the error was discovered. We have placed the correction sticker on the books we have in our office but please check your book. If there is NOT a sticker on page 55 please stop in to get a correction sticker for that page of your book.

5 Skillathon Volunteers Needed Your help is greatly needed to make the Skillathons successful learning experiences for the youth. If you are able to help on Monday, July 23, Tuesday, July 24 or Tuesday, July 31, you can complete a survey online go.osu.edu/wayneskillathon18 or fill out a form to indicate your availability and preferences that will be mailed to you soon. If you feel you don t have enough expertise about animals, no worries - we have simple instructions and leaders to help you! Food and Nutrition Projects: A common oversight for project judging is creating a meal plan for the entire day. As always you should prepare a dish/meal out of your book, additionally bring a poster or E-poster, your project book, a table setting (for the meal at which your dish is served) and a menu plan. The portion that is often overlooked is the creation of a complete menu plan for 1 day. For example if you are taking the Star Spangled Foods project and bring the Wild West Burger to judging, you must then create a list of food you will eat for an entire day. Make sure to also follow the MyPlate criteria for serving sizes and categories to make a nutritious daily meal pan. To see an example of the menu or a proper table setting visit E-Poster Requirements for all projects If you plans to create an e-poster (computer based presentation) you must supply your own laptop or tablet. The presentation can be no longer than 15 slide advancements. And for the fair display you will then take a representation of your slides and make a 22 x28 poster to be displayed. Summer FCS and Still Project Dates: In just over a month project judging will start! Please make sure you check out the requirements for judging and the fair before you get there! The guidelines are all available online at June 19-21, July 12, July 13, July 17, August 7, Beginner Sewing Day Camp - Members enrolled in Sew Fun will have the opportunity to complete most of their project at this 3-day camp. Rabbit Projects Rabbit Tattooing - All breeding and pet rabbits must be tattooed prior to entering the fair. To help members get their rabbits tattooed, the committee members are available by appointment. Many rabbit breeders also have the equipment and you can ask them to tattoo your animals. This should be done in the animal s LEFT ear. Market Rabbits will be tattooed during check-in at the fair. Poultry Projects Duck orders will be due July 1 for pick up on July 12 th. Exhibitors are responsible for making their own orders with Centerra Co-op at the Wooster location; they will not turn in orders to the Extension Office. Forms can be found at: go.osu.edu/duckorder18 The chick peeps will be ordered by the Extension Office in June. To place the order, fill out the online survey at go.osu.edu/peeps by June 1. We ask each club or chapter make ONE order, but understand individual orders may be necessary. Pick-up date and cost for a set of 12 birds will be determined once all orders are placed and bulk discount is determined. Poultry Resources can be found at wayne.osu.edu/projectinfo since there is not a resource book to supplement the record book. The old poultry project books on the website offer great resources and study materials for skillathon. Livestock Interview Judging Again this year, livestock exhibitors will have the option to participate in project interview judging in place of Skillathon. Judging will take place during Still Project judging on July 16 and August 7 and will consist of a oneon-one interview with a knowledgeable judge and grading of the Project Record Book and poster. Those who wish to participate must pre-register ahead of time. Sign up is online only by completing the form at: go.osu.edu/interviews Please note that although you may do an interview in lieu of skillathon, your interview score will not be considered as part of the Outstanding Market Exhibitor Program scores for Swine or Beef, or Dairy. You must do skillathon in Wayne County if you re looking to compete in these programs. Exhibitors may choose to complete skillathon for one species and an interview for another.

9 Animal ID Frequently Asked Questions! Should I start the ID process before I have all my forms ready? NO! You need to make sure you have all required photos and forms ready before you start the ID process for each animal. Once you hit save the animal record is locked and cannot be edited! If you submit a half completed record see the next question. What if I submitted an incomplete ID? Create a duplicate record of the same animal. When naming or identifying this animal make sure to put an asterisk * to help you find the correct animal ID when you go to make your fair entry. (See what identifier means to get more insight.) Do I have to submit an animal ID for my (insert an animal)? No animal, participating in the Jr Fair, is excluded from creating an ID. The only difference is the deadline to submit! What if I have a family spare or back up animal? Family spares / backups are eligible for the fair, but EACH spare / backup animal must be submitted for EACH member of your family. Note family spares / backups can only be shared with immediate family per Ohio Revised Code. What if my breed is not listed? For each species, there should be an AOB (all other breed) option or a crossbreed of some sort. Please use your best judgement with this category. What do you mean I have to have my Animal ID done before making my fair entry? The new FairEntry.com has a requirement that there must be an animal ID to match up each fair entry. The animal ID s are put into 4HOnline.com and will transfer to FairEntry.com automatically when you make your fair entry Do I have to submit a photo? Photos are required for only a few specific species. Please visit your specific species sheet at wayne.osu.edu/ help to find out what is required for your animals. What if I don t put animals in by the deadline? A record of the date and time you submit your Animal ID s is kept within the system. This will be no different than breaking any other Jr Fair rule. The problem will be brought to the proper Fairboard committee to discuss and make a decision on the matter. What if I don t have a tag/id in my animal? This is different for each species because some animals will get their tag at the fair (i.e. swine) so you just need to assign a number for each animal, but others may require a specific number. Check your animal ID requirements pages at wayne.osu.edu/help. There is a recommendation page for each species. How many animals can I submit? You can enter any number of animals. There is virtually no maximum. The only difference is projects that have a tag in. With these species, which include steers, lambs and goats, you may only enter the animals that have been tagged at the tag-in. What do I do with my forms? All animal ID forms are to be submitted online and will not be turned into the Extension Office. You can keep them with your book/records in case there are an questions. Continued on back THE LINK

10 When can I submit my animal ID s? An animal ID can be submitted anytime before the deadline. With this process being online you will have until 11:59 on each deadline to submit. (However, we recommend completing the requirements at least a week in advance!) Who should I contact if I have issues? You can contact the Extension Office at Our office hours are 8-4:30, but you may leave a voic at anytime! How can I edit the information? Once the save button on the animal ID is pressed, no more edits can be made. Why didn t it save my animal ID? In most instances this happens when you hit the save button, but there was some error on your entry like a weight not in the right format (i.e. 128 lb. goat must be submitted at ) or a required field not being filled out. I have heard only born and raised animals must be submitted? All animals that participate in the Jr Fair must have an ID. Some require photos and forms. To find out the specifics for your species visit wayne.osu.edu/help. Why won t it work on my phone? Identifying animals in 4-HOnilne works on most phones but we have found that some phones have a block that will not allow the additional screens within the system needed to add photos or files. We do not have a solution for this situation. We recommend trying another phone, tablet, or computer. We have a computer available at the Extension Office if you need assistance. Steer weight-in was in January, do I need to input anything? All livestock that will participate in the Jr Fair must be entered. So yes you will need to add all the steers you tagged-in to the Animal ID. I have a born and raised hog/feeder calf do I just insert the pictures? You must have picture in the system AND the form uploaded in the county forms. There are two options to insert the photos. One being attached to the form, scanned in, and all submitted on the County form. The other option is, taking pictures of everything instead of scanning, add each picture to the photo fields, then take a picture of the form and add it into the County Form field. What does Identifier mean on the animal ID page? When submitting an animal ID there will be one field in green and marked to the right with identifier. This is the only ID you will get to see when selecting your animal on FairEntry.com. This is a sample screen of what you will see in FairEntry.com. As you can tell, it will only give a tag number on this screen. This is the reason we say to add an * to an animal ID if you have recreated it because you may have messed up the first time.
