We will have pickup homes located through the North to Route 422 West and follow directions from above. CLUB CANDLE SALE The Club will have its annual Candle sale. Candles cost $13.00 each (just a dollar more than last year). The order form is attached. Please make copies as needed. A Final order sheet is due by the October 2009 meeting. She was a wire-haired dachshund and at 21 years old was certified as the world s oldest by Guinness World Records. She wore tinted goggles for her cataracts and favored sweaters because she was sensitive to the cold. are bring please call her before the match and let her know Members please plan to be at the match at 8:30am. 2 Page 2 GIARDIA If your dog loves the water - swimming or drinking from that stream she s a prime candidate for Giardia, a group of water-borne parasites that can wreck havoc with you dogs intestinal track. The infective form survives in puddles, lakes, ponds, and any water. Infection by Giardia, called giardiasis, interferes with both the dogs digestion and nutrient absorption. The 1st things you may notice is an increase in your dog s flatulence, diarrhea, or weight loss. A veterinarian can examine your dog s feces to detect Giardia, but as an old med tech I can tell you that this parasite is very difficult to detect through microscopic examination but there is now a serum test to detect infection. Antibiotics or deworming medications treat Giardia infections. Your Vet may also recommend high fiber food to help clear the parasite from your dog s intestines. You can help prevent giardiasis by keeping your year clean, preventing your dog from drinking from puddles and other natural water sources, and bathing your dog after a swim so she can t ingest the parasite by licking herself. A vaccine is also available for dogs and puppies at least 8 weeks old. Can your dog infect you with Giardia? The studies still don t confirm this 100%. Some researchers say people get giardiasis the same way dogs do: by drinking contaminated water. CANINE FLU VACCINE I, not events, have the power to make me happy or unhappy today. I can choose which it shall be. Yesterday is dead, tomorrow hasn t arrived yet. I have just one day, today, and I m going to be happy in it. - Groucho Marx The 1st canine influenza vaccine has received a conditional license from the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture. This means that Intervet/ScheringPlough Animal Health is allowed to distributed the vaccine over the next year. It can be used under the supervision of a vet while its performance is monitored. The vaccine is injected in dogs 6 weeks and older and so far the studies have shown that it helps control the symptoms and spread of the disease. Canine influ is caused by canine virus type A, subtype H3N8. It was first identified in 2004 after an outbreak of respiratory illness among racing Greyhounds in Florida. Since then the virus has spread to some 30 States and the District of Columbia. Most dogs have no immunity to it which leads to its quick transmission through kennels and communities. It can be spread rapidly through spreading at shows, training, events and even through dogs at vets offices. Canine flu is treated much like the human flu is: with fluids intervenously in severe cases and with antibiotics for secondary infections. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, the fatality rate from canine flu is 1 to 5 percent. HALLOWEEN AND OUR FOUR LEGGED CHILDREN You have decided to dress your dog up this Halloween, but before you go down that trail there are a few things to remember about costuming your canine during this scary season. It s important to consider your dog s comfort. If she s not used to wearing clothes, she may be less than happy with your idea when the big night rolls around. If this is the case, than you may opt for a simple festive collar or bandanna. If she is a regular doggie fashion start, safety comes before style. The customer should be fitted properly nothing hanging loose to the floor or pinching too tight. She must be able to breathe, bark, see, hear, and move comfortably. Remove any dangling accesso- ries that can be a choking hazard, and avoid masks and awkward props of any type. Also watch that your pet cannot bolt out the door when you are handing out treats. Do NOT leave you dog unattended at any time during Halloween or the night before. There are too many people who would not think about throwing things to your dog that they shouldn t.
