We are currently in the process of reaching out to all of our clubs based in Texas to figure out their needs and provide assistance to shelters taking pets. We understand the magnitude of the devastation from this storm is yet to be seen and The AKC and AKC Reunite are here to help in any way possible. 2 Woofer September- 2 ORKC Meetings August 3, 2017 Board Meeting 6:00 PM Officers and Board Members present: Ken Dudley, Pat Hartman, Karen Kressel, Joyce Cardwell, Ashley Richardson, Mary Jo Steger, Linda Sample, David Miller, Tim Snow, Kathy Frank. Ken Dudley, President called the meeting to order at 6:00 PM. There wasn t a Secretary report. Joyce Cardwell gave the Treasurer s report which included deposits and expenses for the previous month. Income was markedly low due to the time of year, no classes and little activity. Club had one large expense with the handicapped upgrade for the restroom. Taxes for assessed value up slightly by around $ Should not increase tax bill by a large amount. Training Committee Report: 20 Classes including 2 dropin conformation and beginner agility. 12 classes full, 2 classes with a waiting list. 90+ students. Income from this session $ K9 NoseWork 8 current classes ongoing. ORKC income June $ and July $470. Agility report: Classes starting as scheduled. Tim suggested checking into a carport for storage on agility field. He was advised to check into the possibility of getting one. Tracking: Scheduled for a test in November and another in March. Show report: Signed contracts for 5 of the 7 judges. We still need to hire judges for Obedience and Rally. Meeting then continued with a discussion with our Insurance Agent, Cindy Jeffers regarding what we are and what we aren t insured for. Discussion as to whether we need to continue with our coverage as it is (agreed to value) or change to replacement value. Discussed and table to next meeting. She suggested we include a Waiver of Subrogation with our rental agreement. She also advised that the door damage at the Harriman show should be covered by our vendors insurance and offered to contact them. Tim Snow made a motion to request a Risk Assessment. Passed. Ants back in Agility Field and October Pet Fest briefly mentioned. Leslie Harden to work on landscaping around buildings and a Yard Sale proposed by Kathy Frank sometime in October. Karen Kressel made a motion to adjourn, Linda Sample seconded. Passed. Membership Meeting 7:00 PM Babbi Dilbeck, DVM from LaFollette, TN gave an extended talk on First Aid Supplies we should have always whether traveling or at home. Her talk was very interesting and informative. Showing us examples of what should be in everyone s first aid kit. She also fielded many questions from the membership and was extremely helpful with ideas and answers. Because of the wonderful turnout of membership, there were many questions and Babbie graciously answered them all. The questions and answers extend her talk to well over and hour and a half and made it very late for an additional formal meeting. Attendees also enjoyed refreshments and several items for their first aid kits. Karen Kressel, Secretary

What environmental factors should influence your hide placement during training? How well does your dog do when there is minimal air movement? How do you avoid confusing the beginner dog, and challenge the advanced search dog? Careful hide placement can help your dog learn and improve quickly, preparing him for new scent problems in trials and other events. Search video reviews, guided analysis, practical exercises and Jacy s coaching will help you learn to place hides thoughtfully and create targeted search problems. Make the most of every minute with your dog - optimize your training time and elevate your dog s training to the next level! Sunday, Oct 8: Refining the Nose Work Team Learn team-building skills and refine your nose work team from a professional dog handler! We have all been working on teaching our dogs to be independent searchers. But how do you support your independent dog? What exactly do we mean by that? Learn how to let your dog lead, but know when to use leash pressure to guide your dog, when to step in and when to step back. What about the look-back? Learn how to tell when your dog is asking for help or telling you they found the hide. We will learn about all of these things as well as reading your dog's body language, watching your dog's eyes, and working on handling and footwork. Video review, guided analysis and practical exercises will help you About Jacy: Jacy Kelley is noted as a gifted teacher, with a common sense approach and good-humored style. He creates an environment where teams at every level have fun and learn new skills. 10 Woofer September- 10 It s Not Too Late to Click It! Click It Good! ORKC is offering a Clicker Drop-in class on Monday, September 18 th at 5:30pm. The class will last about an hour and 20 minutes. If you are interested in learning how to use the clicker in your dog s training, come to the class. Please bring $5 (correct change), a clicker, plenty of good treats, water, a 6 or 8 foot leash (nothing shorter), and a small hand towel. Prong collars will not be allowed. Some dogs that have never heard the clicker may be afraid of the noise, so some examples of a softer sound include a soft sounding clicker, a Snapple top, or even a loud ink pen. You will go away from this class either wanting to learn more, or deciding that the clicker is not for your team. The instructor will be Mary Jo Steger, assisted by Jean Burdick. If you have any questions, please call Mary Jo at Sweet Caroline(s) We ve had a busy summer obedience trials in NC and SC every month! Time and Zinger earned her CDX title in 3 trials May in Fletcher, NC; June in Spartanburg, SC; and July in Greenville, SC. Crista also completed her CDX with Angela. First leg in Waynesville, NC in April (1st place score of 193 ½); second leg in Fletcher NC in May (1st place score of 190); and finished in Greenville, SC in July (2nd place score of 189 ½). ~Angela and Tim Snow~

11 Woofer September- 11 Four Group Placements in Two Weekends! Team KNOX left Mississippi with two Group 4's. Then the next weekend earned two Group 3's in Pennsylvania! All 4 wins were over MBIS dogs in the Working Group. Thank you judges Mrs. Candace Way, Mr. Bill Shelton. As of today, only one GSMD in California has more Group Placements than Team KNOX. KNOX was shown the least from the Top 5 All Breed Swissys. ~Randy Kitts~ BISS GCHG CH Derby's X Marks The Spot RN, BN, CD, NWPD, WWP, RATO, VGS (Ditto). At the ripe old age of 9&1/2 years old, Ditto received an invitation to the AKC Obedience Classic held in December in Orlando in conjunction with AKC National Championship show. Ditto has had an amazing career beginning with conformation where he was top 5 Greater Swiss Mountain Dog in Breed and All- Breed year end standings all 4 years he was shown, finishing in the #1 slot two years. He followed that up with Pack Dog and Weight Pull titles. He was also awarded the Versatility Greater Swiss title. He is also the only Swissy to have obtained his Open Barnhunt title. He achieved his Rally Novice, Beginner Novice, and Novice Obedience titles at 8 years old finishing 2016 as the #3 Greater Swiss Mountain Dog in Obedience. What an amazing dog! Ditto is currently in full retirement from all types of competition except for any type of food competition. ~Debbie Echols~
