May 2015 Letter from the Editor By Valerie Mendyka Spring has sprung and it is an exciting time for the company! Throughout the month of May, Phydeaux will be participating in the Pound for Pound Promotion, a national donation campaign sponsored by Nature s Variety Pet Food. The purpose of this campaign is to bring much needed high-quality food to homeless animals throughout the Triangle and beyond. For each pound of dog and cat formulas of Nature s Variety Instinct and Prairie kibble purchased this month, Nature s Variety will match a pound to be donated to local rescue! This year, the groups who will be receiving the donated food are: The SPCA of Wake County, Pawfect Match Rescue and Rehabilitation, Chatham Animal Rescue and Education, and Hope Animal Rescue. Keep in mind that only kibble purchases qualify to be matched, but purchases can be made at any Phydeaux location to be included in the final donation. If you have any questions about the promotion or want to know more about Nature s Variety pet food, stop by your local Phydeaux and ask an associate for more information! As always, we have an array of new things at Phydeaux. Read on to learn about some of the new treats, foods, and other items that have arrived over the past couple of months. You may have noticed many companies have changed their packaging. Barthworthies, Darford, Cloud Star, Solid Gold, Weruva, and Honest Kitchen are just a few brands that have changed their look and expanded their lines, so please ask a Phydeaux Employee if you are having trouble locating something, as it may have a new appearance!
Letter from the Editor (continued) This time of year brings some of the nicest weather to North Carolina, so we also have some suggestions on places around the Triangle to take your pooch for some fun in the sun. In addition to the places mentioned, there are also a lot of pet-friendly events happening throughout the Triangle this Spring. Keep your eyes peeled for posters on our community boards at each Phydeaux location to learn more about these events or visit us on the weekends for adoption events with numerous groups if you just want to get out and meet some dogs or cats! You can find the current list of scheduled adoption events in the upcoming events section of this newsletter. Make sure to check our website for the most up to date events as more can always be added throughout the month. In addition to the adoption events Phydeaux hosts on the weekends, some of you may know that we also occasionally host Low Cost Microchip and Vaccine Clinics as well. The next clinic we have will be at Phydeaux Raleigh on Sunday, June 28th from 2pm until 5pm. There will be a variety of vaccines available as well as microchips complete with lifetime registration available at a low cost. All of the proceeds from the clinic will go to benefit Rottweiler Hearts Rescue. For more information on the upcoming events and complete details on the Low Cost Microchip and Vaccine Clinic, including costs for the services offered, visit our website at and click on the event you would like to know more about on the events calendar. If you are on Facebook, don t forget to like us for more stories throughout the month! You can also me at valerie@phydeaux.com if you have any questions about the newsletter or would like to schedule an event with Phydeaux. Thanks for reading, and I hope you enjoy the rest of the newsletter! Valerie Mendyka *Note: If you have any pet related questions or issues, please them to the editor: valerie@phydeaux.com
Q and A: Part 1 Have questions? We have answers! Now that the days are getting longer and the weather is getting nicer, we would love to start taking our dog outside with us for longer periods of time. Are there any dog-friendly recreational areas aside from traditional dog parks around the Triangle? Short answer: The Triangle is a very dog-friendly place with tons of options for outdoor activities for you and Fido. If you love to hike or just want to take a leisurely stroll, there are numerous trails and greenways around the Triangle. One of the largest and most well-known of these trails is the American Tobacco Trail (ATT) which spans approximately 23 miles from Durham County through Western Wake County. The trail is dog friendly, but dogs must be kept on a leash no longer than six feet, as is the suggestion for most trails and public parks in North Carolina. The ATT is not the only trail in the area. Whether you live in Chapel Hill, Raleigh, Cary, or any surrounding area, there are plenty of trails and greenways that you and your pet can enjoy. You can learn more about the trails in your area by visiting your town s website. Don t forget to ask your friends and neighbors what their favorite access point is to find a new spot! Also, keep in mind that many of these trails are paved. On hot days the pavement will in turn be hot and can potentially cause harm to your dog s paw pads. Be mindful of the temperature and limit your dog s time on pavement in direct sunlight if the temperature is in the seventies. These trails are well-utilized so please be mindful of the public and fellow pet owners by obeying the leash laws and picking up after your dog. If you d rather relax for the day waterside or maybe try a combination of hiking and swimming, there are other state parks for you and your dog to enjoy. Jordan Lake, Falls Lake, The Eno River, and Lake Crabtree are only a few examples of the areas you can visit in the area to get the best of both worlds! Be sure to read the rules regarding bringing dogs for each place to make sure you are prepared for your visit. Remember that you don t have to go out to a park or trail in order to enjoy a day out with your dog. Many restaurants with patios and other downtown areas in your respective cities are pet-friendly as well! Often you will see multiple dogs on the lawn in front of Weaver Street Market in Carrboro, or even at the outdoor tables at any Whole Foods in the area. Ask a Phydeaux employee for their suggestions on favorite places around your area and please feel free to share with us your favorite places as well.
Q and A: Part 2 Have questions? We have answers! Are there any supplies or toys that you suggest we should bring on our adventure? Short answer: Keep in mind that not all of the parks and trails have regular access to water or trash receptacles so it s always a good idea to keep water for yourself and your pet handy, as well as waste bags. Phydeaux carries a variety of travel water and food bowls in addition to waste management supplies to ensure you have all the supplies you might need on your adventure. There are also other ways to entertain your dog during the day if you plan on spending the afternoon out. Ask a Phydeaux associate to help you locate the toys that are most durable for the outdoors including several that will float if you if you plan on being near water. Phydeaux also has an assortment of doggy life jackets, packs, and harnesses designed for different activities, so be sure to ask for help if you need help finding the perfect gear to suit your sense of adventure!
Hiroshi Employee Profile How long have you been working at Phydeaux? Chapel Hill I have worked for Phydeaux for 2 years and 3 months now.wow time flies! What do you enjoy most about working here? Hands down it s the pets that I come into contact with each day, each one having their own personality. The people are great too of course, and I love the fact we have a strong working staff which makes the day pass a little easier. I believe everyone here has a genuine passion and love for their pets and others. What kinds of furry friends do you have at home? Right now, I am in the process of finding a furry friend. I can say for sure though, that coworkers have presented me with a huge list of animal rescues that offer adoption. To be continued What is your favorite product? Well, I love to pass out a lot of treats once for all the good doggies so I would have to say Cloud Star Tricky Trainers are great for that. What are some of your favorite activities to do outside of work? When I feel inspired, I sometimes work on present and past digital designs that I deem to be incomplete. Since, I m a Graphic Designer I will always see room for improvement and composition touch- ups. I also love to get outdoors, bike, run, travel, check out museums, zoos, and other pet related events. If you could be any animal, real or fictional, what would you be? I would be a Bobcat...for their speed and agility.

Pet Profile Featured Pet Freyja How did you come to live with your owner? What would you consider to be your best feature? I think I have too many great features to pick out a best, but my momma seems to think one of the best things about me is my personality. I have a lot of silly antics that go along with my goofy nature, such as trying to talk to my momma when she comes home from work while carrying a beef trachea in my mouth, or excitedly trying to retrieve a snowball from a mound of snow, or eat a carrot my momma gave me but actually just chew it up and leave all the pieces on the carpet, or drop a toy on her keyboard when I think she s been on the computer too long.. just too name a few. Do you have any nicknames? Not really, my mom is kind of boring. She just pronounces the normally silent J in my name when she s trying to be funny. Do you have any special talents? I am very good at eating weird fruits and vegetables. My momma actually thought about making a video blog called What Won t Freyja Eat? but she never gave me a shot at fame. Probably because she thought I d pack my bags and move to Hollywood without her. But other than eating weird things, I am also good at talking and making weird noises. People sometimes laugh, but barking is below a dog like me, you know? What s your favorite pastime? (Alex s Dog from Phydeaux Chapel Hill)! Back when my momma was involved in showing and breeding Alaskan Klee Kai, she had one litter and that was me! I was the only one in the litter so I got lots of doting on. I sometimes wish I had siblings but that would mean sharing my momma s attention and that is something I DO NOT like at all and frankly prefer not to think about. You could call me spoiled, but I just call myself loved. One of my favorite pastimes is following my momma all over the house. I follow her room to room. I lay by her feet when she cooks, I curl up by her pillow when she sleeps, and I sit by the tub when she s in the shower. Even if she closes the bathroom door for privacy, I always give the door a little scratch to remind her still I m there if she needs me. Anything else you would like us to know about yourself? Even though a lot of people think I m a Pomsky or a baby Husky, I m actually a long haired Alaskan Klee Kai. I am kind of like a miniature Husky but Alaskan Klee Kai are actually a UKC registered breed.

A Worthy Cause Featured Pet Organization of the Month Hope Animal Rescue is a Durham-based animal rescue group whose dedication to finding forever homes for shelter animals focuses on those that are unlikely to be adopted. Although Hope Animal Rescue has already successfully placed over 450 animals into loving forever homes in just a few years of existence! This incredible feat would not be possible without the help of their volunteers who foster the animals and devote their time to volunteering at adoption events as well as educating the public on pet overpopulation and ways to prevent it. Hope Animal Rescue also helps to provide resources to families who need assistance with medical expenses of their pets due to hardships. In addition, Hope Animal Rescue partners with other local area organizations and strives to end breed discrimination and encourage tougher laws against animal cruelty and neglect. If you would like to learn more about Hope Animal Rescue or are interested in adopting, come visit them and their adoptable dogs at Phydeaux Chapel Hill on Saturday, May 23th from 12pm 2pm! They will also be recipients of a donation from the Pound for Pound Promotion courtesy of Nature s Variety going on this month at Phydeaux, which you can read more about in the Letter from the Editor. You can also visit their website at to find more ways to support this wonderful 501c3 non-profit organization and to help save more shelter pets in the Triangle.
