1 Message from the NWT SPCA President, Nicole Spencer Hello and welcome to our sponsorship program; The NWT SPCA is a volunteer board that raises money and awareness of the plight of abused and neglected animals throughout the Northwest Territories. Though a great necessity, there is no animal shelter in Yellowknife. The Great Slave Animal Hospital has been responsible for stray dogs through a contract with the City of Yellowknife for many years. We have been working closely with the vet clinic to rescue and re-home animals in need. Together we have saved the lives of thousands of animals. Until recently, we have focused on a spay/neuter program, a medical fund at GSAH, a foster program, and dog transfer and adoption initiatives. We continue to move forward with these necessary programs but in addition are to raising money to build the shelter. In December 2010, because of outstanding community support, we won $300,000 in the AVIVA Community Fund Competition. We have to thank the community for their overwhelming support to win that money from Aviva and now we have to ask the community to come together again to help raise the rest of the funds required. Since January 2011, we have been working toward a suitable design for the shelter, purchasing suitable land, and obtaining appropriate permits. With these steps finally complete we are left with the challenge of finding $356,000 in additional funding to move forward with building this amazing facility. Please consider the enclosed donation package. This is an opportunity to leave a positive mark on your community. By donating today, you will ultimately be saving the lives of thousands of dogs and cats now and in the future. This shelter will serve the entire NWT and Nunavut by housing abandoned and unwanted dogs and cats, being a learning centre for children learning about proper pet ownership and also be a place for community gatherings, business and events. Your generosity will be seen by thousands of people over the lifetime of the shelter. Please open your hearts to our worthwhile and necessary cause. We need your help to succeed. Sincerely, Nicole Spencer
2 Why the NWT needs an Animal Shelter Each year hundreds of dogs are rescued from at least 15 different communities in NWT and Nunavut. The alternative and reality for the hundreds left behind includes getting shot, freezing to death, dying of disease, and malnutrition. Our organization sends hundreds of dogs to other rescue shelters in Alberta, Yukon, and British Columbia. Many northern communities use shooting as a way to control the dog population on a regular basis, as they have very few or no viable alternatives. There has never been an SPCA Animal Shelter in the NWT. There is an average of 300 cat and dog adoptions in the NWT each year. We have 20 foster families in Yellowknife helping the SPCA with animals saved from the communities as we do not have a facility to house them. This facility can potentially offer future veterinarian services that are much needed in the NWT. We need a place to provide affordable emergency care for animals in need. Adding a pet to your family improves your family and saves an animal s life. NWT and Nunavut are ranked last place as compared to all other Canadian provinces in having effective and comprehensive animal protection laws, according to the Animal Legal Defence Fund s 2010 Canadian Animal Protection Laws Rankings report. We need a home for our organization to enable us to better support Yellowknife and NWT communities with our current and future informational, educational, and life-saving programs and services.

5 Happy Endings: NWT SPCA Success Stories. Yuki was only a couple days old when she was brought in to the Great Slave Animal Hospital from Whatì. Yuki s mother had been forced outside in -40 degree weather to give birth. She and all of her half born pups perished except for Yuki. Dehydrated, with severe frost bite on her nose, this little baby survived thanks to the combined efforts of the Great Slave Animal Hospital and a foster mom who nursed her back to health. She is now a healthy and happy young dog living with a wonderful family. Kyra was a pup saved from Cambridge Bay in May She was chained on to the ice after she was born and left. She was only about 5 months old when she came to us at the SPCA foster program. Sea gulls or ravens had left scars on her ears and she was in a poor state. Despite all this hardship she is a wonder pup with a great personality and very gentle. She has been transferred to Alberta and has just found a forever home on Vancouver Island. Winter arrived at Great Slave Animal Hospital in the late summer of He was found wandering the Kam Lake area. This older Malamute was blind in one eye and had obviously been abandoned. He was at the pound for about 17 months when the SPCA decided to ship him out to a Malamute Rescue in Quebec. There he was re-homed and is happy living with his little girlfriend and a wonderful new owner who thinks the world of him and his unique charms.
