6 Lesson 12 How does a Dog get a Job? Some dogs are chosen for their Dog Job based on their KC breed, as some of these Purebred Dogs have very unique dog capabilities, making them great fits for certain Dog Jobs. Below is a short list of the most familiar Dog Jobs. Police K9 Dog Search & Rescue Tracking Dog Most often a Purebred German Shepard is what you see as a K9 (but others might could be a Rottweiler, Doberman, Bloodhound or Labrador). Typically this would be a Purebred Bloodhound or German Shepard (but other breeds are sometimes used effectively as well). Military, Narcotics or Bomb Dog Often a Purebred German Shepard or Belgian Malinois Shepard, sometimes Labrador Retrievers, Beagles and other breeds are used. Service Dog Sheep or Cattle Ranching Dog Classically most are Purebred Golden Retrievers or Labradors (generally speaking you want an intelligent, focused, lower energy dog for service use.) Some mixed breed dogs can be used as well. High on the list of most ranchers are Purebred ustralian Cattle Dogs & Border Collies (but most any dog from the Herding Group would work) Pick a Dog Job to investigate & then locate a Dog that does this Job. What is the Dog s Job? Who is the Dog? Where does the Dog Work? What Breed of Dog is it? Was it chosen because of it s Breed? 12.2 List some of the Dog s Special Breed Qualities List some of the Dog s Regular Duties How was the Dog Trained for his job? (Use an extra sheet of paper if needed). 6
