We thank those who completed their service and welcome our new board. We are excited about the upcoming year and have several new members on the board to solicit new ideas and energy from! As always, we welcome any ideas or suggestions that you might have for neighborhood projects, fundraisers or events. We would like to have a better mix of events that appeal to various age groups so let us know what would appeal to you, your kiddos, or both. Hope you re all having a great summer! Ted Thompson, President BLOCK CAPTAIN PROGRAM Our Block Captain system continues. We will be making bigger efforts in 2011 to support this vital component. But it all comes down to you, in the end. Contact your Block Captain and see what you can do to help organize your block. Consider that your Block Captains are volunteers who are fitting their neighborhood work into their daily lives. Thanks to those of you who have joined Crime Watch and helped support our Extended Neighborhood Patrol. 5 2nd Quarter Issue PLANT SWAPS CONTINUE TO BLOOM! By Ted Thompson Greenland Hills held its second plant swap on Saturday, April 30th and it was bigger than the first! In addition to Greenland Hills residents there were people from East Dallas neighborhoods as far South as Gaston Avenue and the CStreets (Coronado Hills Neighborhood Association). There was, again, a great mix of perennial plants (about 150 in all) along with herbs, ground covers, and various types of terra cotta pots. Everyone left with new plants for their gardens. Tom Henderson generously hosted us again in the back parking lot of his store, Downing Hill Garden Studio, and I would like to thank him for his support! Save The Date: We will hold the next plant swap on October 22nd from 10 a.m. until 12 noon. In addition to the free plants that people bring to swap, we will also sell pansies for your Fall gardens. 6 Greenland Hills Gazette BEAUTIFICATION UPDATE By Katy Richardson April 2011 Yard of the Month 5527 Morningside : April's Yard of the Month winners, Scott and Ashley Smetko, chose their landscape design based on their appreciation for colorful blooms. "We have a lot of room for annual color and we enjoy picking out what colors to plant each season," Ashley says. Since her favorite flowering plant is the hydrangea, two pink specimens feature prominently in the design. "We also love yellow and red hibiscus because they remind us of our honeymoon in Hawaii," she adds. The Smetkos' yard also contains Savannah holly trees on either side of the home ("Our landscape architect called them 'punctuation marks' for the ends," Ashley notes) and a Japanese maple, chosen for its year-round red leaves. Pink Encore azaleas, salvia, begonias, geraniums, and petunias round out the beds and containers. As April Yard of the Month winners, Scott and Ashley will receive a $25 Gift Certificate to Calloway's Nursery. May 2011 Yard of the Month 5230 Ridgedale: You'll find a plethora of brightly colored snapdragons, pentas, impatiens, and blue salvia in the front yard of John and Jackie Carl, May's Yard of the Month winners. Their front porch features topiary planters, which serve as vivid focal points as they overflow with geraniums, impatiens, begonias, and English ivy. "I wish so badly I had the green thumb to pull this off myself, but as long as I don't kill it, I consider it a personal accomplishment," Jackie laughs. "All the creative credit goes to Chris Terry with Need A Hand Lease A Man." The Carls' yard also highlights one of Jackie's personal favorites, blue hydrangeas. "I love seeing them every summer when I visit family in Minnesota, where they are simply breathtaking," she explains. "I can't get enough of them and I'm always sad when winter comes and they go away. The only touches I'm responsible for in my yard are my blue hydrangeas." 7 2nd Quarter Issue NOTABLE NEIGHBORS One hot summer evening (and we ve had more than our share of these this summer!), I spotted two dogs walking along McMillan. Their owner was nowhere in sight. One of the worst fears of any pet owner is realizing that your beloved four-legged family member has escaped the confines of the backyard or your house. Having rescued and adopted a dog myself, I am always on the lookout for dogs that appear to have lost their owners. On this evening, it was well over 100 degrees outside, even at 7:30 p.m. I pulled over at the next cross street, and, with the assistance of four fantastic women living in the neighborhood, we were able to coax the dogs to sit with us. We gave them water and looked for contact information. Unfortunately, only one of the dogs had a collar on, and she had no tags with any identification. Cindy Embrey, owner of Avenue Barket (a new neighborhood market for dog and cat supplies and treats, located at 3418 Greenville Avenue), quickly drove back to her store to get two leashes so that we could make sure the dogs didn t run away. One of the women offered to take both dogs back to her house for the night while we sent out s and posted on the Greenland Hills Facebook page pictures of the dogs in the hopes of finding their owners. Luckily, Cindy noticed a car driving slowly down each street with the windows down and asked if they were looking for two dogs. They were! We were able to reunite the two dogs with their extremely worried owners just a few hours after finding the dogs trotting along McMillan. This story had a very happy ending. It also serves as a reminder to all pet owners please make sure your animals have collars with tags (you can have the tag engraved with the pet s name and your cell phone number at Petsmart). It is also recommended that you have your pets microchipped at the vet so that, worst case, if someone finds him or her and takes him to the vet, the chip can be scanned to get your contact information. That will speed up the process of reuniting you with your beloved pet should they decide to take a little trip through the neighborhood. Call for more info To celebrate the Vickery Place Centennial, residents Kathy Harris and Shelia Huffman have co-edited a cookbook, Recipes and Recollections: Vickery Place Cooking Since The cookbook is a collection of recipes of Vickery Place residents, past and present, 15 neighboring restaurants, neighborhood photos dating back to the 1920 s and a foreword by Rose Mary Rumbley. The book is full of area history and will make a beautiful keepsake, holiday gift for family and friends and teachers gift.. Profits from sales will go to SPAN, the East Dallas pet food delivery to low income and home bound senior citizens and for sign toppers in Vickery Place. Downing Hill Garden Center at 3016 Greenville Ave. will host a party to launch the cookbook. Please ask your neighbors to come by Downing Hill on October 1, 2011 between 1pm and 5pm to sample dishes from the book, receive a free gift and sign up for the door prize and of course, the book will be available for purchase...
