August Steering Committee The Steering Committee did not meet in August. Cal obtained a very interesting video, Breeding Koi the Japanese Way produced by New Vision and narrated by Nik Read. New Vision is a British company that produces a wide variety of documentaries. August Meeting 8/19/2014 Attendees We had about 16 people turn out for our August meeting. I think we had one guest, an unfamiliar face anyway, but we blew it and didn t ask them to introduce themselves. Pond Problems Alan Merrifield is having problems with the pond electrical system and was looking for advice. We suggested he contact a local electrician to make sure his electrical is safe for his fish and for himself. Club Business Frank reminded us it is time to start thinking about new officers for next year. He hasn t decided yet if he ll run again. Please let us know if you are interested in serving in any of the positions. Frank is also proposing a more convenient meeting location. The current library is a very nice meeting room, but it is something of a hassle to arrange each month. Frank is proposing we move our meetings to the Belmont Cabana where we recently held our Summer Celebration Picnic. He may also investigate use of the Vineland Library. Cal announced that next month s speaker is a gentleman from Cabella College speaking on aquaponics. Eve reminded the group that annual dues are past due. Presentation Kentaro Sakai arranged to give them unprecedented access to record the entire spawning process. The video showed details of an assisted spawning and a completely natural spawning. Sakai Fish Farms, SFF to hobby insiders, are continually performing experiments with different breeding pairs and carefully recording the results to improve the breed. Here, you can see them stripping the eggs from one of their oyagoi (parent) females, Splash 3

Sperm is then extracted from a male, mixed with the eggs and returned to the spawning tank. Eve and Mel Bretzke selected and prepared some great grub, BBQ tri-tip and chicken and everyone else brought lots of delicious side dishes. The video was a very interesting look at the techniques used by one of the World s leading koi farms. It gave us a glimpse at some of the beautiful koi that Sakai is known for. Cabana Club House It was a gorgeous day. Warm and sunny, but in the shade with a bit of a breeze it was one of those patented perfect California days. Just the thing to get together with a group of koi/pond people and have a good time with some great eats. Dessert At the conclusion of the show we broke for our usual dessert, partaking of some of the leftovers from our picnic and continuing open discussion. Pond Tour Picnic Speaking of dessert, every year after the Pond Tour, SCVKWG holds a celebratory social of some sort. This year we held a BBQ picnic at the Belwood Cabana. The Picnic Area Splash 4

Mel and Eve got down to business right away and soon the lovely smell of BBQ meat was wafting over the gathering crowd. Finally the meat was ready and the group got down to the serious work of the day, eating. Master Chefs at Work While waiting for the chefs to complete their work the group engages in many serious discussions. Renewing acquaintances they may not have seen for a year or maybe just a few days ago. Always plenty to talk about at a picnic. And Serious Eating And you can see we took this very seriously. As usual at these events, there was way too much food, but you can bet we made a serious dent in it. When the last morsel was dispatched, Frank took the floor to hand out the plaques to the pond owners present and thank them for letting us show their ponds. A great day, bringing to a close another good year of hard work and pond fun. What Turns You On Let us know what you d like to hear about at our meetings or in the Splash. Just drop a line to scvkwg@gmail.com with your ideas. Serious Discussions Past Time to Renew Remember our year ended at the end of June. If you haven t renewed yet you are delinquent. If you are delinquent, your friends and neighbors will start to look at you funny. When they start to look at you funny, they might turn you in for overwatering your lawn. Don t be delinquent!! Drop your check in the mail for Eve. SCVKWG PO Box 9006 San Jose, CA Dues are still only $30.00 and that covers the whole household. Where can you get a deal like that! Splash 5

Koi Parasites & Treatment A while back I came across this website: They had a great write-up with excellent photos of common parasites. I have attended several KHA wetlabs and have often thought it would great to have one at one of our meetings. The only problem with that is while it is great to see the proper scrapping and microscope techniques, most koi don t have any parasites, which is a good thing, let alone all of the common ones. And while there are a number of books on the subject of koi health, many of the images of the parasites are not that great. So for those of you that might want to scope your fish from time to time, here is the write up from Cascade Koi and their excellent photos. Identification of Koi parasites. Most koi parasites are not visible to the naked eye. In order to correctly identify any koi parasites you will need a microscope with built in light and a magnification of 400 times. These are simple to use and are an essential piece of kit for any koi keeper. To accurately detect any koi parasite causing an infestation of your koi, you will need to take a skin scrape. This involves using a microscope slide to carefully remove a small quantity of mucus from one of your koi. The mucus is then sandwiched between the slide and a cover slip and inspected through the microscope. We would recommend that upon purchasing your microscope, you ask your koi dealer to demonstrate this technique to you. This will help avoid causing any possible damage to your koi. If you suspect you have a koi parasite problem, skin scrapes need only be taken from two or three koi, if parasites are found, it is safe to assume all koi are infested by the parasite and therefore the entire pond will require treatment. Before any parasite treatment is used in your koi pond, it is vital that you know the exact volume of water and temperature, and that adequate filtration and aeration is provided. Parasite treatments will lower the dissolved oxygen levels in the pond so we recommend adding additional aeration when using any chemicals in your koi pond. You must also switch off any ultra violet sterilizers / clarifiers and ozone equipment. Ichthyophthirius multifiliis (white spot) White Spot Classed as a large protozoan parasite, white spot must initially be detected through the use of a microscope, however if left, its effects becomes identifiable with the naked eye. Koi infected by white spot appear to be covered in white spots the size of salt grains, where the parasite has burrowed through the outer skin layer. To multiply the adult parasite leaves the host koi, it then forms a capsule around itself. Within the capsule it divides and multiplies producing up to 1000 tomites (babies). These are then released as free swimming parasites to go in search of a new host koi. This reproductive cycle is rapid and so early detection of this koi parasite is essential. To effectively eradicate this koi parasite we recommend using a treatment which is a mix of formaldehyde and malachite green. Pre-mix solutions are available, but it is better to mix your own as the dose rate of formaldehyde should be altered dependant upon pond water temperature. We would use Malachite green solution at a dose rate of: 12.5ml per 220 gallons. Formaldehyde (36% solution) should be used at: <54 F 15ml per 220 gallons F 20ml per 220 gallons >64 F 25ml per 220gallons. Splash 6

A second dose should be applied five days later, and you should take further skin scrapes following treatment to ensure the White spot has been eradicated. Ichthyobodo necator (Costia) Chilodonella Cyprini. Costia This koi parasite is extremely small (10-20 microns long) and a magnification of 100 times is the absolute minimum required to identify costia, 400 times is ideal. When taking a skin scrape and looking for Costia, try to avoid using a thick layer of mucus and add a drop or two of water to the slide. Costia is a very fast moving parasite and looks in shape similar to a comma, search the entire slide carefully but you will often find it easiest to identify this parasite along the edge of the mucus layer where this meets water. Costia affects both the skin and gills of koi, and left undetected will multiply at an alarming rate and can soon cause mortalities of koi. Symptoms of infection include excess mucus production, respiratory distress, and general debilitation, the eyes of your koi may also appear sunken. The koi parasite Costia has a very simple life cycle, using a process known as binary fission, meaning each parasite divides into two. Costia infestations can be treated using a mixture of Malachite Green and Formaldehyde at the same dose rate as described above for white spot. Another effective treatment is potassium permanganate. Chilodonella Cyprini Chilodonella is another protozoan parasite which effects the skin and gills of koi. This koi parasite is typically between 40 and 70 microns in length and is oval in shape. Again, identification of this parasite can only be achieved through the use of a microscope. The parasite multiplies quickly through division, although from time to time a pairing of two individuals takes place where some genetic material is exchanged, this process is known as conjugation. As this koi parasite is an efficient swimmer, infection from koi to koi can also spread quickly, especially in overstocked ponds. Effective treatment of this koi parasite can again be achieved through the use of Malachite green and formaldehyde mixed together, at the same dose rate as for White spot and Costia. In many cases, one dose is enough, however further skin scrapes should always be taken and secondary doses applied if required. Trichodina Trichodina Splash 7

Trichodina is another small protozoan parasite which is commonly found on koi. Microscope identification is necessary, as it has an average size of 0.07mm in diameter. This parasite is circular in appearance, and is often seen spinning and moving very quickly when viewed through the microscope. The parasite attaches to the koi using tiny hooks and holding discs. The koi parasite Trichodina can quickly cause severe damage to the skin of a koi (as can all parasites) leaving the koi open to secondary infection from bacteria such as Aeromonas. Trichodina can swim well and therefore this koi parasite can quickly infest an entire pond of koi, especially when the stocking level of koi is high. Trichodina multiplies by division. Trichodina can be treated using the following: Potassium permanganate crystals (BP grade) at a dose rate of: 1.5g per 1000 litres. A second dose should be applied dependent upon water temperature: >68 F after 7 days F after 9 days <60 F after 12 days. WARNING!! Always increase aeration of your koi pond as this chemical will significantly reduce oxygen levels in the water. Gyrodactylus (skin fluke) Gyrodactylus is one of two common worm type parasites which the koi keeper may encounter. The parasite is worm like in shape and it has hooks with which the parasite attaches itself to the koi. This koi parasite reproduces live young. Being hermaphrodites, all of the adults are capable of producing young, and each one will carry a single larval parasite in its abdomen. Further more, this unborn parasite is also developing a larval parasite in its abdomen before they are even born, and in as little as one day after being born, those young can also give birth. So it s easy to see that this koi parasite is very prolific, and one individual is capable of reproducing into thousands in a short period of time. When viewing this parasite under a microscope you can often see 3 or 4 developing parasites within each other. If you carefully look at the photo below you will be able to see an unborn parasite. Once this parasite is attached to a host koi, it lives and feeds on the mucus skin and blood of the koi. The parasite is capable of surviving without a host koi for five days. This koi parasite can be treated using Formaldehyde and Malachite Green as described above. Other effective treatments are Superverm, Flubenol and Masoten. Dactylogyrus (gill fluke) Gyrodactylus (skin fluke) Dactylogyrus (gill fluke) This koi parasite is very similar to Gyrodactylus in appearance. It has a set of hooks with which to attach itself to the host koi and these are surrounded by a number of smaller hooks. The two parasites differ however in their method of reproduction, this koi parasite is an egg layer, and can lay up to two- dozen eggs per hour. Water temperature is important as the reproductive rate increases in warmer water, and decreases in colder water. The Splash 8

same applies to the time required for the eggs to hatch. In warmer water hatching can take only four days, whilst in colder water it may take as long as thirty days. This is a very important fact to remember when treating this koi parasite as most treatments will not kill the eggs, and they can hatch even after treatment and re-infect the fish. For this reason either the initial treatment has to stay active for at least four days, or you must do a second dose of the treatment. To treat koi infested with this parasite you can again use a Mixture of Formaldehyde and Malachite Green, apply the second dose after five days and take further skin scrapes to ensure all parasites have been eradicated. Other treatments include Superverm, Flubenol and Masoten. Lernea (Anchor Worm). It is visible to the naked eye and the adult parasite may reach 12mm in length, with anchor like appendages at the head. It attaches to the koi and the anchor penetrates under the scale and into the muscle of the fish, where it feeds. This parasite reproduces by laying eggs, two egg sacs are produced at the end of the females body, the larvae hatch from these egg sacs and swim freely until they come into contact with a koi, they then commence the cycle again. The parasite can cause serious damage to the koi where it penetrates the tissue. These wounds sometimes heal very slowly and if untreated become infected with bacteria and fungus, it is these secondary infections that cause the most risk to the koi. To treat Anchor Worm you must treat the pond to sterilize the adults, this treatment should be repeated after seven days to ensure any eggs that were unhatched at the first treatment are now sterilized after hatching. Now all reproduction has been stopped. The treatment used is Dimilin. Now the adults must all be removed from the koi. To do this you will need to sedate each koi individually and carefully remove the parasite with tweezers, making sure you remove the entire thing including the anchor part. Each entry wound should then topically treated. Check every koi in the pond to ensure none are missed. If you have difficulty removing the Anchor worm, try dipping the ends of your tweezers in a potassium permanganate solution, this causes the parasite to release its grip. Argulus (fish louse) Anchor Worm This koi parasite is most commonly found on newly imported koi, and should be dealt with by your koi dealer, it is rarely a problem for the koi hobbyist. Argulus (fish louse) Splash 9

Argulus is a type of crustacean, the parasite attaches to koi using suckers. The parasite then punctures the skin of the koi and feeds on blood and body fluids. It also releases a toxin when it punctures the koi, this toxin may cause erratic behavior of the koi as the effects cause intense irritation. The punctured areas of the koi will also be open to secondary bacterial infection. This parasite can be introduced to the koi pond by visiting frogs and toads. Argulus reproduce by laying eggs. After mating the female detaches from the host koi to deposit her fertilized eggs on the pond walls or any other surface. Upto 500 eggs may be laid. Dependent on water temperature the eggs take between two and four weeks to hatch. The newly hatched parasites will swim to find a host koi. They will reach sexual maturity after 20 to 50 days depending again on the water temperature of the pond, then the cycle starts again. To treat an Argulus outbreak you will need to sedate and inspect every koi in the pond, removing all adult parasites with tweezers. The pond must then be treated to kill off the juveniles. This treatment should be repeated two or three times at intervals of seven to ten days. The most effective treatment is Masoten I ve scrapped my fish a number of times and have yet to see any parasites. Unfortunately, it s not real easy, but like anything else, practice makes perfect. However, if catching your koi and looking for these creepy crawlies gives you the willies, you can always call Dr. Jessie at If you have further interest in this subject check out this video: I had the good doctor over earlier this month to work on one of my fish. You can get a pretty good idea of how to do a scrap by looking at the video. The Fridenstine s Carl and Peggy Fridenstine founded this club way back in October I had the privilege of visiting their pond last summer. Unfortunately, they aren t up to letting a bunch of people tramp through anymore, but via the magic of the Internet you can visit anytime you like and see what it looked like a few years ago and over the years. The link to their pond page is: http// It mighty nice, enjoy! Turtles - Continued Earlier this month I received a worried query form a turtle lover. While I find them amusing, kind of like little kids, at someone else s pond, turtles are not something I want to have anything to do with. So I forwarded this query to our friend Bill Stoye. If made it by Bill and Joan s pond you know he has two Red Eared Sliders, Gertrude and Gretchen. Bill rescued them from an uncertain fate, probably destined to be turtle soup. They ve kept his goldfish on their toes every since. Here s what transpired. Good advice for aspiring turtle keepers. Ed s Questions Hi Don, This is your Fremont corespondent - We purchased two Red Eared Slider Turtles after seeing some on the Pond tour. They are now? happily? sunning themselves in our living room size 18" deep lily and lotus pond. The wife is concerned about what to do with them in the winter. Me, being from Minnesota, where every stream and lake has turtles that somehow survive the winter - figure no problem - No clue what they do, but in the spring there they are again. Betty read on the internet that turtles need 75 degrees, and the nights are now below that, and she is worried. (About 15 years ago, we had one January morning with 1/3 inch ice that disappeared by noon.) Your Web Site does not seem to have any turtle in it - Splash 10

So - a) is there a realistic turtle advisory?? b) do you know how some of the bay area turtle keepers handle the winter?? c) who to or call or see?? Thanks much -Ed Thelen Bill s Response Ed: Don passed the onto me with a glowing recommendation so with reservation: I m not an expert on Turtles, but we have had two Red Eared Sliders about seven years, they came to us as rescue turtles, bad places. I wrestled with your wife s thoughts for quite a while, reading up on them only made it worse, until I visited Hakone Gardens in Saratoga. I talked with one of the care people there, their turtles live outside year round, and live on Koi food as our Goldfish do. Only our cats eat turtle food, as treats! I figured if living in their pond year round is good enough for their very large Red Eared Sliders, it ll have to do for Gertrude and Gretchen. Wintertime, we don t see the turtles for a couple of months, they hibernate, go to the bottom of the pond under cover until the water warms up around 50 deg., which gets dicy, the fish shouldn t be fed until 55 deg. or so, but if the turtles aren t fed as soon as they start moving around, it puts the fish in jeopardy. If you have fish, don t let the turtles go hungry! If you d like to discuss it further, come visit; I also recommend visiting a place like Hakone Gardens and asking questions. Ed Continues Thank you for your comprehensive and kind answer. :-)). > go to the bottom of the pond under cover... Our water garden is 18 inches deep with lotus and plenty of (way plenty ;-)) water lilies. Do you think that is "cover" or do you mean some of the protective "cover" at Hakone Gardens to provide fish refuge from birds? I enjoyed your construction photos :-)) I wish we had taken a nice series of photos of our pond and water garden construction - Thank you again :-)) -Ed Thelen And Bill Replies Ed: We have five chimney flues on the bottom of the pond that the water lilies used to sit on, plus many cinder blocks that other plants sit on, the turtles hide somewhere amongst them for cover. The cinder block holes are now too small, so I suspect they use the chimney flues for cover; I see water lilies as shade. I say water lilies used to sit on, because the two turtles systematically destroyed the water lilies, they did not eat them, they just enjoyed bitting the stalks and shoots off, letting them float to the surface and the lilies died. If you wade through the online photos you can see how covered our pond once was with lilies. We had to choose between turtles or lilies. ~bill Which Prompted Ed to Reply I don't think we have noticed the turtles getting at the lilies - sounds good to me ;-)) A year ago Betty decided that the lily roots were just too much - they were in the pond for about 14 years - We drained/pumped the pond - My word!! The root mat was like 5 inches thick - Betty hacked it up with a big sharp knife - hours - and we borrow neighbor's green yard waste carts for weeks!! Turtles may be a labor saver ;-)) Turtles are more interesting than I figured - These are really sensitive to movement - Betty watches them from behind the blinds in our home - She has to cause a small crack to see through very slowly - or the turtles are back in the water and she sees only ripples. Maybe they are still "acclimatizing"?? Only had 'em a couple of weeks - The water garden used to have a large population of "mosquito fish" - The day after the turtles arrived they were almost invisible - The turtles just can't have eaten them that fast!! Maybe they smell turtles and hide?? Love your address "captainscove" sounds a bit like Monterey or Point Lobos ;-)) Thanks much Splash 11

-Ed Thelen PS >>> but if the turtles aren t fed as soon as they start moving around, it puts the fish in jeopardy. Gads - I guess I'm really naive - guess I figured turtles just find enough to eat?? We have a cat fish in there - see it's tail sticking out of a cinder block maybe 3 times a year - Will check with Betty - At Which Point I Couldn t Resist Jumping In Great dialogue. My two cents worth. The chimney flues are an excellent hiding hole for several reasons. The opening is much larger than concrete blocks and the clay will not leach into the water like concrete. Our water is hard enough without any additional lime. May be a bit difficult to find as wood fire places are now illegal, thank goodness. South Bay Materials stocks them. At least the last time I needed any. One word of caution however. They are made of fired clay and the edges can be very sharp. It is easy to chamfer the edges with a coarse file to make them safe for fish and turtles. Keep it up guys, this is great, and... Happy Turtle Keeping, Then Bill Continued With a Great Dissertation Don is right on about the flues; it dawned on me, these are not the common square flues but oval ones, unique to the valley area, don t know if unique to CA. 18 x9 x12 high and 1-1/4 thick, considerably heavier than cinder blocks. I bought two, two months ago, $20 each at South Bay Materials and not using one of the two. I use a sharpening stone to round off the sharp edge. Very handy items to raise plants closer to the surface when desired. Here is an item that may save poor Betty from cleaning the bottom of the pond at least as often, if not forever; fabric pots, I used them and thought they were the greatest thing since beans in a can!, Fabric-Pot. The material is same underlayment used under the rubber pond liner, which is also the same as used in road construction when laying a new asphalt cap. Price per plant starts climbing; cost of plant itself, + chimney flue, + fabric pot, +Aquatic Plant soil but hey, better n spending it at the local bar! Watergarden.org is a good source to see what is available for ponds, I did buy pots from them maybe seven years ago. Aquatic Plant Media; I came across this at Summer Winds, thought it a great idea but felt it s really pricey, $15 - $18 USD +tax., for a ten pound bag, then discovered somewhere, it s the same material as the cheap kitty liter and oil absorbent used in garages or airlines where I used it. Available at An-Jans feed & pet supply as Absorbs It at about $8 per 50# bag; has no additives as most kitty liter and Aquatic Soils do. Keeps water clear, water plants don t need additives, they get what they need from the water if there are fish in the pond, other wise they need fertilizer (pellets?) More cost per plant. It does have its down side, don t let the turtles or fish dig it out, but this goes for any plant soil as well; it is difficult to clean up when wet as its heavy and sticks to surfaces just from its weight. Turtles: sensitive to sound, they don t have ears but feel vibrations; whenever a diesel truck comes up the street, half a block away, they are off their log in a heart beat, swimming off in a panic, surprisingly fast! Gertrude and Gretchen were a little shy during the pond tour with so many strangers around but generally they just hang out on their log unless surprised, they don t like surprises, even if I startle them. The most difficult time with them for me is when they desperately want out of the pond to lay eggs, they lay eggs regardless if there is a male turtle around. For two weeks they frantically try to get out of the pond, they presently haven t been able to, this past week we had a number of eggs on the bottom of the pond. I wish there were a controlled way I could let them out. A fellow at Hakone Gardens told me they have had their turtles returned from miles away. Ed: Thanks for the note on Captains Cove; We actually had a piece of property in Captains Cove VA.< Places/Washington/ Splash 12

_XPMZ53#!i= &k=9rD7gFP>, that plus I ve envisioned a place where captains came to rest their souls after facing savage storms at sea (storms of life), well that is some of the thinking around the name. The boating group I hang out with address each other as Capt n And Maybe You d Be Interested in Something Smaller A while ago I sold some filter media to a gentleman that raises Diamond Back Terrapins. I couldn t resist sharing his photo of this beautiful little baby. I ll get off my rail now. It s been fun. ~Bill Hope This Was Helpful If you re thinking of getting a turtle or two, or already have some, hope Bill s experience has been helpful. If you missed his pond during the tour, you owe it to yourself to see it. It s really a marvel of workmanship and Bill is a great guy to talk to. He s gained a tremendous amount of valuable experience over the life of his pond project and is always willing to share. And For You Bonsai Lovers Splash 13

It s Good to Have Friends Had a nice surprise at this month s meeting. Eve read a letter she d received from a new member. A while back I asked my neighbor Bob across the street to flush my QT filter while we were away for a few days. He seemed to enjoy that so I added his name to our mailing list. A while back he mentioned he enjoyed all of the he received with the various stories about koi and water gardens and such and indicated he was going to join the club. I didn t think he probably would since his connection to koi was so tenuous, but darned if he didn t and threw in a nice contribution on top of their dues. So welcome to SCVKWG Bob and Marilyn. Hope you can make it to some of our social events in the future. Thanks for the generous contribution. Splash 14
