11 Gold, Gold, Goldfish... Fishy facts... By: Quyen Thai How do you take care of it? By: Quyen Thai Goldfish are really easy to take care of. All you really need to do to keep it living is feed it and clean it s bowl. You should clean it s bowl every 1 week or 2. The water should be 65-69*F. If you have a cat you should probably not buy a goldfish. You can feed a goldfish once or twice a day, what they could eat are regular fish food, bread crumbs, water fleas, and more. There are lots of fish in the world and the type I m telling you about is the goldfish. There are 100 types of goldfish but only 20 types are being sold. Not all goldfish are the color gold. They can be red, orange, brown, grey, black or white but they are still called goldfish. Goldfish can live for a very long time, Just like some have lived for about 40 years! Most goldfish are 2-3 inches long some can be more than 12 inches!

Sea otters usually sleep in plant like seaweed called kelp. Female otters carries her babies on her chest while she swims. The babies are called pups at this time. Most Sea otters grow up to 4 to 5 feet. (1.2 to 1.5 meters.) They weigh up to 60 pounds to 85 pounds. Otters fur are insulated to keep warm. They are insulated by a layer of fat. Sea otters have been hunted down for their soft fur. Hunters kill so many that there are not many around anymore. Sea otters are close to extinction About 2,800 sea otters are believed to have died due to the oil spill. Sea otters walk awkwardly on land. Otters eat Crayfish, crabs and fish, clams, frogs, insects, snails, snakes, and occasionally waterfowl. It preys mostly on marine invertebrates such as sea urchins, various mollusks and crustaceans, and some species of fish. There are about over one hundred thousand to more than one million. Otters are part of the weasel family. Sea otters are meticulously clean. After eating the otters clean themselves in the water. They clean there self with their teeth and paws. Today, 100,000 to 150,000 sea otters are protected by law. They are the smallest marine mammal. Please help the otters from extinction by not littering. Great White Sharks by. Josh Bonham Great white sharks have been known to attack people. The only reason why is because sharks have bad eye sight so humans look like seals. Their main prey is seals. Great white sharks are known for size, teeth how much teeth and how much food it can it. great white sharks are the largest predatory fish on earth. They grow an average of 15 feet, but some great white sharks have been recorded to be over 20 feet long weighing about 5,000 pounds.

15 Interesting and Fun Facts Sea Turtles By: Ashley Amigo and Amy Clymire Did you know that sea turtles are the largest turtles that live almost their whole life in the ocean. There mother lays the eggs in the sand and then buries them. After a few weeks the eggs hatch. They try to go straight to the ocean but some do not survive. They don t survive because while they are traveling to the ocean seagulls and other predators try to eat them. Their large flippers make them excellent swimmers. It s paddle like flippers make it easer to swim. A sea turtle, can swim up to 20 miles (32 kilometers) per hour. Also sea turtles eyesight is good underwater, they can see above water just as well. This is a fact you probably don t know, sea turtles do not have teeth. They chew with their jaw. The diet of a sea turtle depends upon the species. Some are herbivores, eating a variety of plants and animals, and others carnivores. They will also eat seaweed, cuttlefish, sea cucumbers. Now that you have read this article, you know all about sea turtles and how they live, eat, and swim!!! A Bully Free School By: Gracie Woodruff Olson is definitely a bully free school but this year has stood out to me in an extreme way. Our Counselor Mrs. Oliver has worked really hard to make our school bully free, by putting up so many pieces of work to show that this school is absolutely bully free. So when we see Mrs. Oliver in the hall or anywhere just thank her because she deserves it.

16 Take a Bite of This By: DominicWhitehead Lizards By: Zachary Nakamura Komodo dragons eat by tearing large chunks of flesh and swallowing them whole while holding the carcass down with their forelegs. For smaller prey up to the size of a goat, their loosely articulated jaws, flexible skull, and expandable stomach allow it to swallow its prey whole. The vegetable contents of the stomach and intestines are typically avoided. Copious amounts of red saliva that the Komodo dragons produce help to lubricate the food, but swallowing is still a long process (15 20 minutes to swallow a goat). A Komodo dragon may attempt to speed up the process by ramming the carcass against a tree to force it down its throat, sometimes ramming so forcefully that the tree is knocked down. To prevent itself from suffocating while swallowing, it breathes using a small tube under the tongue that connects to the lungs. After eating up to 80 percent of its body weight in one meal. Lizards are closely related to snakes. Some Lizards claim territories such as fences. Modern day lizards can t fly but millions of years ago they could fly. Some lizards have sticky tongues that allow them to catch bugs. Some lizards have no legs at all like the glass snake! There are many species of lizards including the skink. Lizards come in many different colors and sizes!

17 100-million-old spider found in amber By: Sabrina Fairchild Researchers found a rare dinosaur-age spider in the middle of attacking a wasp that got trapped in it s web inside a chunk of amber. This spider was going to make a meal, but never got to it said George Poinar Jr., a professor at Oregon State University. The amber chunk also contains the body of another male spider in the same web. The attack on the wasp by the old spider, might then be considered revenge. THE LIONFISH!!! By: Amy Clymire and Ashley Amigo Lionfish are fierce predators. The lionfish scares the one its about to eat by flaring its pectoral spines. Their spines are very sharp and pointy. The reason they are called Lionfish is because of there fins and spines which can look like a lions mane. Lionfish have a diet of shrimp, crabs, and small fish. In a few weeks a single lionfish can eat all the fish around a small coral reef. They eat a lot of reef fish in the Caribbean. Even though they are in the Caribbean they are also in the U.S, pacific, and Indian ocean. Do you think lionfish have any predators. Even though they have sharp and poisonous spines they do have predators. You may think sharks eat almost anything they can get their teeth in, but they are not big on lionfish. People also are a threat to the lionfish. They eat and sell them for pets. But before we eat them we have to cut off the spines and take out the venom. So now that s the ending, and you have learned all about the lionfish. What they eat, their predators and where they live, and remember never go near a lionfish. Just a tip of advice.

A Robot with a Reassuring Touch By: Ariella Chukwuma A robot named Baxter can look at someone, analyze how much pressure to put to shake their hand then use that exact pressure. He may be a robot, but he s the smartest robot ever built yet, and when you think about people have been trying to build perfect robots for a really long time. So when you think about it Baxter would have to be made really smart. Like most robots really should be, I mean really what s the point of making a robot that s supposed to be like humans if they can t even think. Talking can be on hold for now, but it should at least be able to think. Luckley Baxter can think and has to be one the most impressive robots ever made.
