FELINE FUZZ Quarterly Newsletter Fall 2018 Amazing Rescues Lomax Olive A kind woman rescued Olive in August, and brought her to the shelter right away. One of Olive s eyes was bulging from infection. We knew she needed immediate medical help, so we expedited the intake process and had our wonderful vet, Dr. Maucher, examine her. We put Olive on drops for a couple of days, followed by an enucleation. Olive was friendly and purring from her first day at FFF and she s recovered quickly from her initial ordeal and surgery. She s a typical kitten -- running and playing and getting into everything! She was so precious, a wonderful adoptive parent was enamored immediately and Olive will be in her forever home by the time you read this. Lomax, a black male kitten, was rescued from a feral colony that is an ongoing TNR (trapneuter-return) project. He s a sweet, affectionate lad, but he had a neurological injury that affects his gait. He has been examined by two veterinarians who agreed that this injury happened before he was rescued. He likely wouldn t have survived outside, so we re thankful he didn t stay there. He doesn t let his injury stop him from behaving like a normal kitten! He runs and plays and climbs, and pals around with Sigmund, a foster brother. Willoughby Meet our Mr. Personality! In January this black cat was brought to the shelter in a trap on spay/ neuter night. The man who brought him in didn t want him back and threatened to shoot him. We realized right away this was not a feral cat. We took him out of the trap and he was rolling over for pets on the table! Willoughby, who we believe is about two years old, tested positive for FIV, but that s generally not a huge issue for cats. We ve had plenty of FIV-positive cats at the shelter who live long, healthy lives (he is negative for feline leukemia, neutered and current on shots). However, we later discovered that he s also diabetic. He needs insulin shots twice a day and regular blood testing to monitor his glucose levels. Neither issue has affected his charming, affectionate personality. He loves attention and to be petted! Julian Another feral colony rescue from April, this little black kitten -- along with three other babies rescued from a different colony -- had to be bottle fed, as we could not find a mother cat to nurse them. Jenn P. from Sato Salon Organics has fostered for FFF previously and stepped up again, bottle-feeding little Julian. Jen noticed that Julian couldn t eliminate properly so we started down the what s wrong with Julian veterinary path. After visiting three vets, we discovered that Julian was indeed a male cat who was born with a urethra that was too small. In late August, Julian had surgery at Valley Central. It was a whopper: abdominal exploration, biopsy of a mesenteric lymph node, cystectomy, a bladder mucosal culture and urethrostomy. Wow, that was a lot for his little body! Thanks to lots of love and expert medical care, Julian is thriving! He loves his wet food and toys, but most importantly, he loves the unconditional love with which he s showered every day. He s a sweet boy and shows his gratitude with his near-constant purring. He's a fighter and we will all fight with him until he s in his very own forever home. Everyone at FFF, in addition to his foster parents, Jenn and Eric P., are grateful for everyone who took part in saving him! The lesson to these tales is: SPAY/NEUTER! If these colonies were taken care of sooner, we would not have these types of situations. Please (PLEASE), if you have a neighbor in need -- cats all over the place -- or an abandoned property with again -- cats all over the place -- please alert the neighbor or property owner to the FFF spay/neuter program.
Looking for Our Forever Homes All of our adoptable cats are spayed and neutered, up to date on vaccinations, FeLV/FIV-tested and microchipped. Would you help us find homes for these kitties by posting this page at work, your vet office and community boards. Gamora and Nebula Were you expecting Marvel superheroes? We have not defeated any intergalactic warlords yet, but we are super sister kittens. We can't believe we re still here at the shelter! We were rescued from a feral colony when very young and have been together from the start. We are very active and playful, sweet and gentle and LOVE to explore. We would love if you would take us home together. We were born in April 2018, spayed, current on shots and FeLV/FIV negative. Gamora is the black/white tuxedo female; Nebula is the black female with a few white hairs on throat. Fawn & Spidey Hi human friends. We re Fawn and Spidey. We came back to FFF a few months ago due to a divorce situation, but we d really like to be with a family again. We need someone who can give us love and is patient so we can learn to be our prior social selves again. Are you that special person or family who can help us get our groove back? Fawn (I m orange) and Spidey (I m not, but I m also female. I got my name because I climbed my condo s netting like a spider when I was little) would really like to stay together. We re spayed, FeLV/FIV negative and current on shots, and we recently turned four years old! Piper I'm a young female tiger who was found wandering through a nearby town, looking for food and shelter last winter. My previous owners kicked me out and would not let me back in. Then they moved and left me on my own. Let s note that I was not spayed (but old enough to get pregnant!). A volunteer brought me to the shelter to be spayed and evaluated. Thank goodness. At least I m cared for, fed and loved! Anyhow, now I m here and waiting for my forever home. I love people, but not other cats so I really need to be your one and only! Like other FFF cats, I m now spayed, current on shots and FeLV/FIV negative, and I m about a year-and-a-half or two years old. Pinky, TeddyBear, BW, and Tiger We are four adult felines who need another home because our elderly owner moved to Arizona and couldn t take us. Let us introduce ourselves: Pinky is an orange male; TeddyBear is a tortie female; BW (Bailey) is a black and white male; and Tiger is a brown tiger female. We re about eight years old now and frankly, we don t like shelter life. Definitely not our cup of tea (our human loved tea...we miss that). We are gentle and reserved cats who are looking for a quiet, adult home (or homes; we don t have to be together). We are spayed/neutered, up-to-date on shots, FeLV/FIV negative and will have dentals and medical clearance before you adopt us! For adoption information and scheduling an adoption appointment, please contact Therese at or fffadoption@verizon.net
A Night in the Country Northwestern Recreation Commission held its 20th Night in the Country on Saturday, August 18, at the Northwestern recreation fields in New Tripoli. This event brings together many people from our local community for a day of fun, tasty food, and an evening that ends with a spectacular fireworks display. This was FFF s fifth year participating. Our volunteers manned an informational tent and we handled trash pickup for the event, resulting in a donation to our organization. Many people stopped by to talk about the services we provide and share their special pet stories. We also sold (lots of) baked goods made by our volunteers, cat toys and FFF T-shirts. Despite a few rain showers, we had a great time at Night in the Country! Longaberger Basket Bingo What a fun day of bingo with super prizes and a lot of generosity! About 65 bingo players came to play, armed with their daubers, donations, and lucky charms! We appreciate the donated supplies and we raised almost $3,000 after expenses! We would like to thank everyone who supported us by donating to the raffle, baking goodies, volunteers and players! FFF Kitten Shower FFF held its first kitten shower in July. Many thanks to everyone who came and brought gifts for our kittens. Our crib was overflowing, and everyone enjoyed the shelter tour, light refreshments, and playing with our fabulous felines! Four lucky kittens were adopted on this special day and are now in their forever homes. Simply Quilts The wonderful ladies from the New Creation United Church in Palmer Township donated two bundles of handmade quilts for our wonderful shelter kitties. A big thank you to these hard -working ladies for their wonderful work, and for helping to make cage life a little more comfortable for our kitties. Volunteer Appreciation Gift Card Winners July - Mary Ann S. August - Tiffany D. September - Betsy B. In Loving Memory of Timmy This big orange boy was trapped on my porch in April - when we still had snow! His story was in the last newsletter. Everyone had worked very hard to relieve his suffering due to his eye entropion's with surgery and weekly eye meds. He was done with all that and had taken to walking on a leash around the shelter. Therese was getting him used to a room he could stay in until adopted. We had big plans for him. Then suddenly on August 18, Timmy had passed away in his sleep overnight. That usually means a heart issue. He looked as if he was sleeping. We will miss you big boy. Linda B.
Volunteer Snapshot: Patti M. I retired last spring and one of my goals was to volunteer with animals. I have three black cats. To ensure I wouldn't bring more cats home, I started volunteering at a wild-animal rehab facility. It was wonderful but these animals need to stay wild so they can be released again. This meant no talking or playing. I needed to find another shelter that allowed more cuddling. So after some searching, I found FFF. After my first day at FFF, I was hooked. Cats, cats and more cats. It was wonderful. There are young, old, big, small, one-eyed, three-legged, and even a separate suite for the leukemia kitties. I realized this wasn't just feeding and cleaning, but caring at a whole new level. There are quarantine areas, adoption areas, senior areas, kitten areas and even areas for the new ones needing encouragement. After a tour, I realized this facility is amazing. There is a vet for all the medical needs, people who provide foster homes, trap-and-release programs and even fenced in areas for the cats to go outside. Talk about the Ritz! All the volunteers and staff are very friendly and helpful. I have met so many wonderful people who care as much as I do about animals. It makes you want to do more. Everyone who loves cats and has any amount of spare time, should visit and experience FFF. There is something relaxing and stress-free about taking care of cats. Any animal person knows how warm it makes you feel to interact with them. And I'm sure they appreciate the attention. They need our help. Most of the cats came here because they were injured, starving or abandoned. I'm so glad there is a place like FFF to take them in. I know all the cats at FFF would love to have a forever home, but until then, FFF is the next best thing. The care and love they receive is amazing and I'm happy and proud to be a part of it. Petrified Pete now rules the roost They were experienced kitty parents when Sandy and Terry J. adopted Pete from FFF in January 2016, so they knew to give him some time and space. We put Pete in a spare room, and gave him time to get used to Cookie, who d been with us for 13 years, and to his new home, explained Sandy, but he hid under the futon for a whole month! He was so scared. She sat in the room with him to coax him out to eat when she was there (but he stayed under the futon) and was very patient. After a while, they opened the door of the room to see what would happen. All of a sudden, he was out and about and took over the whole house. Now he s the king, Sandy said. Pete obviously loves his family. He chases Cookie occasionally, but she s smaller and can get under the couch; he can t! He s so comfortable, he sleeps in the middle of the dining room table; and watches the birds from cabinets and counters. Pete also loves to play laser tag, and he likes circle toys. He makes us laugh, continued Sandy. We do go camping and we take the cats in the camper, but Pete doesn t like it. He hides under the sleeping bags in one of the bunks. Why adopt an older cat? Sandy and Terry adopted Pete because they d lost a pet of 15 years and needed a new companion. Sandy likes two cats, even though they don t always get along. We have the room, the ability to properly care for them, get them to the vet, and so on, so we figure, why not rescue two?, Sandy explained. And we like an older cat. Everybody wants kittens and often the older cats, who are just so awesome, are overlooked, and they shouldn't be. They are such fabulous felines. They knew FFF because they live near one of the shelter s volunteers, and they have several friends who ve gotten kitties from FFF. They like that it s local; the people are terrific and the fund raisers are good. They can tell that at FFF, it s all about the cats and their well-being.

She is a sweet heart... For Cats Eyes Only by Sir Alexander As I sit here in my comfy sunny window, I'm contemplating the seasons that are coming our way. The first is the one mom calls Halloween. She gives out treats to the neighborhood crumb crunchers who come begging for candy in their silly little costumes. Last year they saw me resting in my window and they all thought they should "pet the kitty, pet the kitty." Well I sure put a sinister stop to that before it went too far. Mom brought some costumed critters in to pet me. I slowly eyed them up and down, then I slid into my evil cat routine. I hunched down low in front then suddenly arched my back to a grand height while spiking my tail straight up and to its fullest circumference. I let out a low growl that increased to a high ear-piercing scream that the entire neighborhood could hear. They all screamed and ran out of the house, fearing the evil cat was on their trail. Mom just told them that their costumes scared me but we all know the truth. It was so funny that I was rolling around with laughter and almost fell off my windowsill while watching them running down the street. I doubt they will be around this year. That was so much fun, I chuckled for a week. Well friends, must go but I'll let you all know the antics that I think of for Thanksgiving and Christmas in my next letter. Until then, enjoy the holidays and remember the lessons I've taught you from past seasons.
