It's me, Marley back again with another PAWdcast. This month is a VERY busy one, so let's get started. April starts with International Pooper Scooper week the 1st - 7th! What? We celebrate pooper scoopers? Well, I'm certainly not going to scoop my own poop! That's what I have a human for! I shall expect my human to scoop twice as often in celebration of this strange week. Yes, that sounds reasonable. I suppose this is truly for the doggie pooper scoopers though, out on their walks. (I have heard over in one town in England they now say NOT to scoop the poop because so many people then toss the bags of poop in the woods and the bags are not safe!) In any case, we'll leave that strange custom and move on to the next round. April is National Heartworm Awareness month AND Prevent Lyme Disease month - both come just in time for spring and the startup of all those nasty bugs that cause the problems! Make sure your dogs (and cats!) are protected against heartworm with a heartworm preventative, and in the case of Lyme disease, be sure to use a flea/tick preventative and also check your pets after they've been outdoors and remove any ticks immediately! April is National Pet ID week! That's right, all of you humans need to make sure that we pets have proper ID in case we get lost - we need help getting back home again (remember my story from a couple of months ago when Mom rattled the catnip jar to summon me?)! Please make sure that you have a properly fitting collar and set of tags (ID, rabies and city license) for each of your pets. Also microchipping is an excellent way to keep your pet safe! April 28 is Hairball Awareness day - yuck! We cats do not like hairballs any more than you step-on-it-in-the-middle-of-the-night-with-bare-feet humans do. The way to prevent hairballs is to brush, brush, brush your cats! We kitties love to be pampered - so get those combs and brushes out and give our coats a good once-daily grooming to remove loose fur and prevent hairballs! (Cont d on page 2) 1
2 PAWSident s PAWdcast (Cont d from Page 1) Finally, April has many more days to celebrate but I do not have the room to list them all, so I will close with this one. April 30 is ADOPT A SHELTER PET DAY! Yay! This is my favorite day! I am an adopted shelter pet myself! Speaking of shelter pets - all of my sponsors have now got homes, even Beau has finally gone to a home of his own (OK, for the time being it is only a foster home, but that will hopefully change after 1 month of working his magic on these people!)! Now I must choose a new sponsor pet - who will it be? Should I choose Odie, who sucks his "thumb" while purring when he is very happy? How about Nigel who is a handsome orange tiger? But then Furnando is also a handsome orange boy. Purrhaps I should sponsor Festivus and his little jellybean toes? How about Mahalo? He looks a lot like me! Who should I put my "black magic" to work on next? Help me decide! Until next time, this is Marley, signing off. The Chickens are Laying Their Tasty Eggs Again! After a much-needed vacation, the rescue chickens at Helping PAWS Pet Rescue are back to work. These cheerful chicks are giving back to the rescue by producing delicious eggs in a rainbow of colors from green to blue to brown to cream. Even speckled! You can buy these fresh, tasty eggs for only $3.50 per dozen at Country Care Pet Hospital at 939 W. Bayfield St. in Washburn. All proceeds benefit Helping PAWS Pet Rescue. Find Us on Facebook 2
3 Dear Tabby Dear Tabby: Are all cats hunters? I ask because even though I am currently residing at the Rainbow Bridge, when I lived with my mom and dad, my dad used to say that I was not a normal cat because I didn't hunt birds and mice and bats. In fact, one time when my mom took me out on my leash, I had to hide from a very fierce and angry wren. I know she was small, but she was really mean looking, so I hid behind my mom's legs. Another time, a mouse got in our house and I ran upstairs and crawled under the bed! I don't even want to talk about the time the bat got inside. Was there something wrong with me? Chamois (the cowardly Persian) Dear Chamois: A wren? Really? These are some stories that you might want to keep to yourself. I can understand avoiding the bat those things are really creepy! The truth is that most cats like to pursue prey even if they aren't planning to kill and eat it. There is a reason that most catnip toys are shaped like mice. Mice were put on this earth to amuse us. We catch one, let it go, catch it again, let it go, etc. Frankly, you missed out on a really enjoyable part of being a cat. One of the best games is to catch the mouse, bring it in the house and present it to your people. Then, when the live mouse runs under the couch, you can pretend to protect your screaming mom from the big ferocious rodent. I am afraid I have to agree with your dad, you really aren't normal. Tabby Dear Tabby: A few months ago my brother Jimmy and I went on a long ride to the vet's office. Our Mom and our Grandma and Grandpa were there too. I growled menacingly at the vet to let her know that she should keep her distance from me and my brother. Even so, she fussed over my brother for a bit and then lifted me up so I could see him. But what had she done? He didn't smell like my brother anymore and he wouldn't play with me. When we left there, we left Jimmy behind. Well, I want him back! She has had him far too long and I miss my playmate. My Mom and Grandma and Grandpa miss him too. How can I make her give him back? Gorbie Dear Gorbie: I'm sorry but your brother isn't at the vet's office, he is at the Rainbow Bridge. I know you miss him, but you must try not to be sad, because Jimmy is now happy and healthy and enjoying himself with the other animals there. Some day you and your family will join him there and then you can all play together again. In the meantime, you need to help your family by trying to fill Jimmy's paw prints. Be a good, loving, playful doggie. Tabby Dear Tabby: April 30 th is National Tabby Day. How do you guys rate your own day, when there is no National Dachshund Day? Gorbie Dear Gorbie: There you go again, comparing yourself to cats! Face it, you are only a dog. For what it's worth, I have heard that there are places around the country that hold annual Wiener Dog (Cont d on page 4) 3
4 Dear Tabby (Cont d from Page 3) Races. Silly little dogs like you compete to see who can run the fastest while wearing costumes that make them look like hot dogs. Be careful what you wish for! Tabby Dear Tabby: After spending over a year looking for my forever home, I recently went to Ashland High School to be fostered by the Veterinary Science Class. Guess what happened! Someone immediately fell in love with me and I have now gone to her home for a one month foster period. If everything works out, she will adopt me! I am so happy. Thank you, thank you, thank you! I must rest up now so that I can work my charms on her when she wakes up. Keep your paws crossed for me. Beau Dear Beau: Congratulations Beau! As I told you before, there is someone for everyone, and it is just a matter of being patient and waiting for that someone to appear. Just be yourself, and I'm sure you will charm the socks off your foster mom. Tabby Send your questions to Dear Tabby at DearTabby@ourhelpingpaws.com. Happy Tails! Doc Holiday has been off of all of his meds for one week now and is just great! I just talked to my Mom this morning and she said they lay in bed in the morning and he is flexing his paws into her like she is the "momma" kitty. He eats well and grooms himself well. I hope this confirms that we all found the right situation for Doc and my Mom. Oh Happy Day, St. Patrick's Day that is! Clementine, at left, was adopted! Left, Aldo Leopold & Dian Fossey enjoying life in their new home. Above, Franklin wishes everyone a Hoppy Easter! 4
