PR Judy Roberts Birthdays Nicole Leighton 8 th Lisa Edwards 23 rd Happy Birthday!!!!!!!!!!!!! Coleen reports that Quest is stable. He is feeling somewhat better, with good days and some not as good. Deb reports that Peter is resting after his neuter surgery, along with dental cleaning and having a pigment wart removed from his eyelid. Sally Stewart s English Setter, Kismet is recovering from getting into things that setters do and was sick. Why MUST they always give us a scare?? SOMETHING EXTREMELY IMPORTANT!!!! Sally s girl ate about 8 pieces of chicklet-sized sugar free gum. Sally found the evidence but did not know for sure which dog until Kizmet starting seizing. Unknown to Sally, and I am sure for many of us, that the ingredients for the sugar-free gum and foods is toxic to dogs! After a LONG weekend at the vets, Kismet will fully recover, but it was a very scary and life-threatening ordeal. Sally got her to the emergency vets in time. A message from Sally.. Anything with sugar alcohols (ends in tol like xylitol, sorbitol, mannitol, malitol, erythritol ) is poisonous and they are found in many sugar-free items, like gum, candy, mints, cookies, etc. Pays to check the packaging and put anything like that away like it was any other poisonous substance. Jean s Madeline also was very sick over the weekend. Not knowing what she got into, she seems to be getting better and they are waiting on some blood work results. Coleen, Deb & Skip went to visit Bob, Shirley and Holly Semich. They had a very enjoyable afternoon. Shirley looks well & the family expresses their thanks and gratitude for thinking of them. The club members pitched in, and gifts of a potted flower, fruit basket and an array of gift cards were delivered. We hope that a few relaxing and enjoyable moments may be spent by the family. We continue to keep them in our prayers with wishes for Bob to soon find a job and that Shirley s health returns. Shirley continues with her treatments and will have surgery. We hope to see them out and about soon. They were reminded that the club members are only a phone call away for anything that they may need.

7 Enjoy..a very sweet story. Puppy Size Danielle keeps repeating it over and over again. We've been back to this animal shelter at least five times. It has been weeks now since we started all of this, the mother told the volunteer. 'What is it she keeps asking for?' the volunteer asked. 'Puppy size!' replied the mother. 'Well, we have plenty of puppies, if that's what she's looking for.' 'I know... we have seen most of them,' the mom said in frustration... Just then Danielle came walking into the office 'Well, did you find one?' asked her mom. 'No, not this time,' Danielle said with sadness in her voice. 'Can we come back on the weekend?'the two women looked at each other, shook their heads and laughed 'You never know when we will get more dogs. Unfortunately, there's always a supply,' the volunteer said. Danielle took her mother by the hand and headed to the door. 'Don't worry, I'll find one this weekend,' she said. Over the next few days both Mom and Dad had long conversations with her. They both felt she was being too particular. 'It's this weekend or we're not looking anymore,' Dad finally said in frustration. 'We don't want to hear anything more about puppy size, either,' Mom added. Sure enough, they were the first ones in the shelter on Saturday morning. By now Danielle knew her way around, so she ran right for the section that housed the smaller dogs. Tired of the routine, mom sat in the small waiting room at the end of the first row of cages. There was an observation window so you could see the animals during times when visitors weren't permitted. Danielle walked slowly from cage to cage, kneeling periodically to take a closer look. One by one the dogs were brought out and she held each one. One by one she said, 'Sorry, but you're not the one.' It was the last cage on this last day in search of the perfect pup. The volunteer opened the cage door and the child carefully picked up the dog and held it closely. This time she took a little longer. 'Mom, that's it! I found the right puppy! He's the one! I know it!' She screamed with joy. 'It's the puppy size!''but it's the same size as all the other puppies you held over the last few weeks,' Mom said. 'No not size... The sighs. When I held him in my arms, he sighed,' she said. Don't you remember? When I asked you one day what love is, you told me love depends on the sighs of your heart. The more you love, the bigger the sigh! The two women looked at each other for a moment. Mom didn't know whether to laugh or cry. As she stooped down to hug the child, she did a little of both. Mom, every time you hold me, I sigh. When you and Daddy come home from work and hug each other, you both sigh. I knew I would find the right puppy if it sighed when I held it in my arms,' she said. Then, holding the puppy up close to her face, she said, 'Mom, he loves me. I heard the sighs of his heart! 'Close your eyes for a moment and think about the love that makes you sigh. I not only find it in the arms of my loved ones, but in the caress of a sunset, the kiss of the moonlight and the gentle brush of cool air on a hot day. Take the time to stop and listen; you will be surprised at what you hear. 'Life is not measured by the breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.' Hope your life is filled with Sighs!!!

8 Rescue Coleen reports with a chuckle, that our club rescue Wagner, is a happy old fart who patiently waits around for every meal he can get. From the Rescue side. Hi Everyone, We have amazing news to share... We are Celebrating an Anniversary already. ONE YEAR IN MY FOREVER HOME. I, for one, could not be happier. I found my place in my Mom's heart and my spot in every room in my house... YES, DID I SAY MY HOUSE? Yes, this is my house. We tackled four seasons and several issues and well Mom doesn't even talk to me about whether I'm staying or not she sometimes kisses my head and sometimes tells me to "Go lay down!" That's what Mom's do. I'm proud of her, there is no doubt,,, we've tackled my bad behavior and then my progress, my barking, and then my not barking, my not liking her new job and then me enjoying her new job, then my itching and then my not itching,,, I'm proud of Mom... turns out she is very resilient! (Aunt Mary knew that long before Mom figured it out ) So, on the Anniversary of the Rescue Red Dog and my spending time at work with Mom and her rescue efforts there we have a little story to share... One that helped us when "WE" were having a little trouble. Mom has rescued lots of pets since she started work last July, but this one was extra special. One that helped "US" when Mom and I were having our troubles. It made her remember why I was here. We had the pleasure of meeting "Zeus" a fantastic beast. Jet black, Great Dane. 145 pounds still a bit thin. Rescued at 126 pounds. Another 15 pounds and he will be amazing. Shiny coat and just majestic. Pretty boy but a little "lost yet" if you know what I mean. I know what it's like to be skeptical until us rescues spend some real time at our final destination. We want to relax and settle in, but we come with some issues... Not sure if we can truly just relax and be "good boys and girls". I really want to let new parents know "we really don't have it all together right off the bat." We kind of hold our love back and act out a bit just in case we have to leave. We aren't so willing to just give it all,,, cause sometimes it's a short journey and that HURTS. So back to "Zeus". The Gentlemen said "I am here for a complete exam and health certificate". His name is "Zeus". He's a rescue. I'm his adopted father. He's going to his new owner next week." Mom said "Oh going to his forever home?" He looked curious. She said "I am a forever Mom myself.

9 When they get to their final destination that is their forever home." He thought that very sweet. Mom walked around the desk onto the main floor and shook his hand. "I want to thank you for being a foster home to Zeus. I am lucky myself, I too rescued an Irish Setter with the help of a loving foster home and committed group of friends. What you are doing is very important and I for one appreciate it. So tell me the story." What he said next is nothing less than amazing as far as I'm concerned. He said well Zeus's father was deported to Iraq. He left his dog with a friend who had no idea what it was going to take to deal with this massive dog. He was inferior in his care and gave up to the point he was going to have Zeus put down. A caring vet contacted rescue, which landed Zeus briefly with my Mom's Client. Zeus was just passing through Baltimore and heading out of town. His visit to Mom's Vet was being done through the transition to complete Zeus's final forever home destination. The man (a great Dane owner) said he was very excited about the husband and wife who had a warm bed and happy home anxious for his arrival. The Foster Dad shared that Zeus had been jumping fences and "acting out a bit" but his new parents were previous Great Dane owners and equal to this new task. They always had two and in the last year both had passed being old dogs. They were ready and excited to bring Zeus into their family and hope to add another once he settled completely in. Mom and I both agree that our heart breaks for the Soldier who will return home without his buddy waiting. We wish there was some way that he could know that Zeus landed in such a great home. There is no way that can happen, but it's great to know that the new Forever Home Family are previous Dane owners and fairly prepared for "Zeus". But hey, we all know how tough the beginnings can be. As much love and anticipation our forever parents throw our way, it's truly the patience and unconditional love that makes that home really "FOREVER". So, this story reminded Mom and I once again, no matter how tough things seem to be, at least WE know each other, we have a story that can be tracked, we have support that cannot be topped. We have a beginning, middle and a happy ending, and for that we are both truly grateful. So I'd like everyone to raise a glass in celebration this month sometime. Toast yourselves on a successful rescue (even though it took a year) Toast "ME" that I am now complete and let's toast "Zeus". He's on the very beginning of a journey that me and Mom have completed. LET'S CELEBRATE,,, that my story has an ending,,, FINALLY,,, With a One Year Anniversary Celebration... One that I can count on... And Mom and I just have to believe that "Zeus" will be ok too. Mom just stopped rubbing my belly,,, it's time to go to bed... Yes, in my bed, in my room, next to my sister and MY MOM. THIS IS BIG BAILEY SENDING OUT FOREVER BARKS FROM BALTIMORE ON MY VERY SPECIAL FIRST BUT NOT LAST ANNIVERSARY...
