Phantom Lake Math Challenge September-October 2016 The Power of Pets The Phantom Lake Math Challenge is an open invitation to have fun solving problems at home with family. It s an opportunity for students to discover different ways to approach problems and a chance for students to share their math thinking and ideas with others. Anyone can participate. Choose the problem that fits your math ability/interest. These problems are generally in an order of increasing difficulty (A-L). Please submit your answer using the response form attached. You should turn in one form for each problem you solve. Feel free to showcase your creativity and design a poster or chart to show your work as well. Sometimes acting out problems and using objects can help students develop a deeper understanding of the problem. Please put the letter or title of your problem, your first and last name and your teacher s name on the form when you submit it. All solutions are due to Mrs. Gaylord by Friday, October 28th. Bring your completed form(s), charts, and posters to your teacher. Students who successfully complete the challenge with the correct answer and an explanation of their mathematical thinking will receive a certificate and their name listed in the PTA newsletter. Happy problem solving! A. Fish Alice tells everyone in her family that she wants to add new pet fish to her aquarium. For her birthday, her mom and dad give her 5 goldfish, and her Aunt Pennie gives her 3 tetras. If she now has 12 fish altogether, how many fish were in her aquarium before her birthday? B. The Pet Store Mr. Brown has opened a pet store where he sells hamsters, parrots, and geckos. At the beginning of the month, he makes sure he has 12 of each animal ready to sell. The graph shows how many of each pet he sold last month. It is time to order more pets for the store to sell. Which pet does he need to order the most of so he can start the month off with 12 of each animal again? Which pet does he need to order the least of?
C. Turtle Trouble While Ayesha was at school, her pet turtle got out of its tank and fell down a hole in the backyard that was 5 feet deep. Every hour, the turtle climbed 2 feet up, but when it stopped to rest, it slipped back 1 foot. Then it started to climb up again. How many hours did it take for the turtle to climb out of the hole? D. Dog Walking Andrew took his dog, Spot, for an hour walk at 8:15 a.m. Then they spent 15 minutes playing catch. Next Spot took a half-hour to eat his food. After eating, Spot took a 2-hour nap. Spot then chased the neighbor s cat for 1 hour before Andrew found him. What time did Andrew take Spot home? How much time did Andrew have to eat lunch before he had to take Spot to the vet at 2:00 p.m.? E. Tantalizing Treats Ahmed bought a box of hamster treats that contained 220 treats. He wants to make the treats last for 50 days. If he gives his hamster 5 treats each day, does he have enough treats for his plan to work? If not, how many more treats will he need to have enough for 50 days? How many days will the box of 220 treats last if he gives his hamster 4 treats each day? F. Pet Sitter Cassie takes care of 10 pets each day, and she has a daily budget of $20 to buy food for the animals she will be watching that day. Using this list of pet food prices, find a combination of 10 pets Cassie can take care of today that includes at least 1 of each type of animal. With this combination how much money will Cassie have left in her pet food budget at the end of the day? Pets Food Price Dog $2.75 Cat $2.45 Fish $1.05 Bird $1.75
G. Pet Store Pedro s family s pet store had a good first week of August, when a total of 400 customers shopped at the store. On Monday, 86 people shopped at the store; on Tuesday, 63 people; on Wednesday, 27 people; and on Thursday, 74 people shopped at the store. If the same number of people shopped at the store on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, how many customers did the store have on each of those 3 days? H. Volunteering Gio s big brother has been volunteering at an animal shelter since January. The shelter displays a pictograph to show the number of animals that people adopt as pets each month. Study this pictograph. What pattern do you notice about the number of pet adoptions taking place each month? Use the pattern to predict how many pet adoptions took place in April. Use the information in the pictograph to create a bar graph. Title the graph, label both axes, provide a scale, and graph all of the data. I. Goat Houses Hollis is helping her dad build a rectangular enclosure for her pet goats. The area of the enclosure is going to be 240 square feet (sq. ft.). The enclosure is going to be 12 ft. wide. What is the length of fencing Hollis and her dad will need to buy to fence in the enclosure completely on all 4 sides? They are also thinking of adding a path that is 1 yard wide all the way around the
goat enclosure. What is the area of land they need for their whole project, including the goat enclosure and the path? J. Aquarium Justin s aquarium holds 25 ½ quarts of water. He buys a new aquarium that holds 32 quarts of water. How much more water will his fish have in the new aquarium? Justin wants to add more to the new aquarium, but he wants to make sure they have enough room. He currently has 1 angelfish and 1 goldfish. If each angelfish requires at least 17 quarts of water, and each gold fish requires at least 2 ½ quarts of water, how many more goldfish can he add to his new tank? K. Class Pets George Washington Elementary School has 24 class pets. Of these, 25% are fish that live in pairs in fishbowls. Of the remaining pets, 50% are birds that live in individual cages, and 50% are turtles that live in sets of 3 tanks. If every class can have only 1 pet enclosure in it, how many classrooms have class pets? L. Jobs Hannah worked all summer to pay for her own school supplies this year. Mr. Lopez paid her $8.00 per hour to walk his dog and play catch with the dog in the park. Mrs. Lee paid her $21.00 to stop by 7 days per week and feed her cats while she was on vacation. Mr. Jones paid her $15.00 per hour to clean the cages of his 12 exotic birds. In the last week before school started, Erin walked Mr. Lopez s dog got 30 minutes per day on all 7 days of the week. She fed Mrs. Lee s cats on only 5 days instead of 7 that week, and she also
spent 3 hours cleaning bird cages for Mr. Jones. If Erin was paid for only the amount of time she actually worked, how much money did she earn based on her usual rate of pay?
